Adult Faith Formation •

Our Sunday Morning Scripture Discussion Group is in session, and runs 10:15-11:45am in the Parish Center each Sunday that Religious Education is in session. This group is open to any and all adults – you can become a “regular,” or just drop in occasionally as your schedule allows. Parents – this is an excellent way for your family to grow in faith together, and for you to set an excellent example for your children as to the value of formation in the faith at all ages.

Adult Sacraments •

Adults thinking about becoming Catholic, or Catholic adults who have missed First Communion or Confirmation – it’s never too late!

Contact Maryann Tyrer, Pastoral Associate, to discuss our adult initiation process.

You can begin the process any time throughout the year.

Sessions are held on Sunday in the Parish Center following the noon Mass.

Volunteers Needed!

• Sunday mornings – We still need a couple of assistants, subs, and hall monitors for our children’s (K-8) Religious Education Program. No experience necessary, and we’ll provide all training and materials. All volunteers must be interviewed, participate in Archdiocesan Safe Environment Training, and agree to a background check.

• Special events – Sacramental celebrations, retreat days, family faith formation, and other occasional events require a few extra folks to help them to run smoothly. Could you help out occasionally?

• Sunday afternoons – Our RCIA and Adult Initiation process is in need of sponsors and event volunteers. No experience necessary.

• Many different opportunities are available, with various time commitments – Contact Maryann to discuss how your gifts might meet our needs.

ALL VICTIMS OF MILITARY ACTIVITY

Although June is the month most associated with weddings in the United States, September has become more popular in recent years.

Wedding celebrations always require some savvy planning, and people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. At the wedding feast at Cana, the mother of Jesus was recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very understandable crisis arose, she did what she could to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table settings knows the stress!

Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ’s blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless marriages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the celebration was held in public view. From this practice came a prayer called the Nuptial Blessing, one of the most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are consecrated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the Eucharistic Prayers over bread and wine. Four hundred fifty years ago, weddings moved inside the church building. All of this gives married couples good reason to celebrate their anniversaries well, especially with the clinking of glasses filled with good wine.

From your Pastor September 22nd, 2019 Being Social in Social Media Many of us know it in our hearts, though we do not quite know what to call it. That feeling that we have when we watch our children or grandchildren fly around the internet on their computers, their tablets and their cell phones, while we are still trying to master the intricacies of texting. We read newspapers . . . made out of paper; they consume their news from websites, news sources and live streaming (whatever THAT is!) That anxiety we experience when we pick up a “Smart Phone” and feel so dumb because we don’t know how to use it, is called the “Digital Divide”. It is that fuzzy barrier between the older generation that did not grow up in a digital, online world, and the one which did. It’s like learning a language; we can study and learn, but somehow, native speakers will always be more fluid. It’s just that way.

But just like learning a language, sometimes it is necessary to try. Here at St. Monica, St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Stephen of Hungary, we are increasingly trying to reach out to that generation of “native speakers” of social media. Jasmine Gomez, our Pastoral Associate for Parish Life, has been setting up accounts on all the major platforms that the vast majority of people use online.

The poster placed at the back of the church gives the “Handles” for each; it does not however explain them.

Facebook is the most famous of these online platforms. Started in the early 2000’s, Mark Zuckerberg offered people the opportunity not only to put information on the internet about themselves, but also to search and find other people. Its membership is over 1 billion. Think of it as a personal scrapbook that we can share.

Instagram is a photo and video sharing service founded in 2019 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. As of 2019 it has over 1 billion users. Think of it as like the slide shows that we used to watch as kids.

Twitter is a social networking platform where short texts of 280 characters can be “tweeted” or shared with the online community. Based in San Francisco, Twitter has become (as we all know) the medium where politicians express their views to their followers. But it is also the place where countless individuals, groups and organizations inform their followers as to what is happening. Think of it as a bulletin board in the break room, or, sometimes, a bathroom wall.

Snapchat is a picture and video sharing application created in 2011. It has the virtue of eliminating what was shared after a short period of time; thus, theoretically eliminating the danger of pictures and videos remaining eternally accessible to others on the web. Think of it as that photo album you show to someone; but only so they can look at it; not so they can keep it.

Those of us on the one side of the digital divide might never feel comfortable using these applications. But we all understand the usefulness of a scrapbook; a slideshow; a bulletin board, a photo album; they are all ways in which we communicate who we are, what we like, what we think and how we feel.

However, the younger generation which has come of age in the last 20 years, is completely comfortable in the world of social media.

It is the way they interact, connect, inform others about who they are, and inform themselves about the world.

Gone are the days of the neighborhood parish, where we kept in touch by walking down the street, chatting with parishioners and occasionally bumping into Father or Sister. In order to connect with one another and with our younger parishioners, we need an “online parish” where members are kept up on parish life through the power of social media and its array of applications.

The number of people who follow our online parish on social media is growing. The benefit of this is, that we offer real-time information online. Rather than reading about it in the bulletin on Sunday and thinking, “I wish I’d known about that”, being on social media means that you could hear about it on the day that it is happening and join in our parish’s life. I hope reading this will encourage you to “sign up” for one or more of our social media accounts.
