K-8 Religious Education resumed last Sunday (September 8), but registration is still open! th • 10:15-11:45am in the Parish Center (406 East 80 Street) • Parents who were unable to join us for last week’s parent meeting, please come in and pick up your Parent Folder with the calendar for the year and other important information.

Please bring your checkbook and if this is a new registration, a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate. st th • If you have a rising 1 or 7 grader, please remember that two years of Religious Education (or Catholic School) are required for reception of First Communion or Confirmation.

Adult Faith Formation •

Our Sunday Morning Scripture Discussion Group resumes on September 15, and runs 10:15-11:45am in the Parish Center each Sunday that Religious Education is in session. This group is open to any and all adults – you can become a “regular,” or just drop in occasionally as your schedule allows. Parents – this is an excellent way for your family to grow in faith together, and for you to set an excellent example for your children as to the value of formation in the faith at all ages.

Adult Sacraments •

Adults thinking about becoming Catholic, or Catholic adults who have missed First Communion or Confirmation – it’s never too late!

Contact Maryann Tyrer, Pastoral Associate, to discuss our adult initiation process. You can begin the process any time throughout the year.

Sessions begin this Sunday in the Parish Center following the noon Mass.

Volunteers Needed!

• Sunday mornings – We need a couple of catechists, and some assistants and subs for our children’s (K-8) Religious Education Program. No experience necessary, and we’ll provide all training and materials. All volunteers must be interviewed, participate in Archdiocesan Safe Environment Training, and agree to a background check.

• Special events – Sacramental celebrations, retreat days, family faith formation, and other occasional events require a few extra folks to help them to run smoothly. Could you help out occasionally?

• Sunday afternoons – Our RCIA and Adult Initiation process is in need of sponsors and event volunteers. No experience necessary.

Many different opportunities are available, with various time commitments – Contact Maryann to discuss how your gifts might meet our needs.

ALL VICTIMS OF MILITARY ACTIVITY

Although New Year’s Day has been fixed firmly on January 1 for several hundred years, Labor Day has the feel of a great dividing line between leisure and routine. The pace of life has since picked up, and new schedules and commitments crowd us. In the background is God’s call to consider the third commandment, still life-giving and binding, to make holy the Lord’s Day by worship and rest.

Jews see the Sabbath, Saturday, not so much as a day of worship, but as a day of rest, a day of renewing friendship with God by delighting in the beauty of creation and the joy of family and friends. It is a day for contemplating the wonder of God’s creation, but not disturbing it.

For Christians in the first three centuries, the Lord’s Day, Sunday, was not for rest, but worship. It was a regular work day. People met before dawn, and after Eucharist hurried off to daily routines. Today we come to Mass, but many hurry off to essential work, not a day of rest. The Lord’s Day is not the Sabbath, but we can enhance Sunday’s ability to transform us if we consider embracing some Sabbath values: having a family meal, going for a walk in a beautiful place, making room in our lives to open ourselves more fully to holiness of life in Christ.

WELCOME BACK SENIORS

From your Pastor September 15th, 2019 Weekend Associates Part 2 Last week I introduced you to Fr. Jim O’Shea, a Passionist priest who will be helping us on Sundays with a Sunday mass. This week I want to welcome a second priest, Fr. Anthony Ciorra. Father Tony is a member of the Secular Institute Voluntas Dei which is a Roman Catholic community that includes priests and laypeople, singles as well as married couples and was founded in 1958 by the Canadian priest Fr. Louis Marie Parent.

Fr. Tony is a university professor at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, CT. Welcome Fr. Tony!

Ministry Month Coming in October Have you ever thought that maybe what is missing from your faith life is a way to express it? Evidently there are many of us who have. Last year we instituted something called ministry month; a month-long outreach where each week we focused on a particular parish ministry that is basic to the functioning of our parish and its worship. People engaged in these ministries got up at the end of mass and for just a couple of minutes spoke about the ministry, what they do and what it has meant for them to do it.

October 6th we will talk about serving at the altar. Being an altar server is open to everyone, men as well as women, from fourth grade through adulthood. In fact, I welcome adult altar servers, as it is a good example for young people that serving in church isn’t just for kids; it’s for everyone.

October 13th we will talk about being a reader at mass. Many people are uncomfortable with public speaking.

However, when a reader gets up and reads, we do not believe it is just speaking; we beave that God speaks to us through the word being read. IN short, at mass we never read alone! God is with and speaks through us.

This is a ministry which is open to all, including young people.

October 20th we will talk about being a Eucharistic minister. Distributing communion, either at mass or to the sick at home and in the hospital is an essential ministry in the life of a parish. Giving out the body and blood of Christ under the forms of bread and wine not only enables the community grow spiritually but having sufficient ministers for communion makes the mass go much more smoothly . . . and quickly. This ministry is open to adults and young people 16 years of age or older.

October 27th we will talk about Hospitality. This might seem to be a strange ministry – yet I think it is one of the most basic. I once asked one of the new young adult parishioners we have how they felt when they first came into St. Monica’s church. They said – scared! It is a big church, often dark, and what makes the difference is when someone comes up welcomes you, hands you a worship aid and makes you feel at home.

The hospitality ministry does that here. This ministry is open to everyone, and indeed whole families have signed up to be hospitality ministers.

There is one group that might seem missing from this list – The choir! But have no fear. We will be handing the choir before ministry month begins on September 29th. Our music director, John Zupan, will speak at the end of masses for a moment inviting people to join our growing Adult and children’s choirs. . . also do not forget that next Sunday we will be honoring our patron saints, St. Monica, St. Stephen of Hungary, and St. Elizabeth of Hungary at the 12noon mass. There will be a reception afterwards in the back of the church where all are welcome.
