Our Young Adult Ministry is aiming to be back this fall with Wine & Cheese gatherings!

These gatherings have been an opportunity to connect with other young adults in our parish and from within the diocese. Traditionally, it occurred on the 3rd Sunday of every month after the 5pm Mass but it has been on a hiatus because of the Pandemic. We will keep an eye on how things are going with outbreaks and guidelines from the diocese

The new year kicks off with a Family Welcome Back Picnic on September 19 Sunday sessions begin October 3 at 11:11am on Zoom! We conclude at 11:55am. This timing allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom). Participating in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish!

You may register online at stelmo79.org, or in person at the Parish Center (406 East 80th St.) The Archdiocese of New York requires a minimum of two consecutive years of either Catholic School or Parish Religious Education prior to the reception of First Communion or Confirmation.

Have you ever said, “I wish I could update my religious education,” or “I wish I could deepen my faith,” or “I wish I could get to know some people in my parish?” If so, then Adult Faith Formation is for you!

You don’t have to carry this burden alone. You are invited to Seasons of H ope – a group prayer and discussion series that will meet on Wednesdays in the Parish Center, 7-8:30pm, September 15 through October 20.

We remember, and we pray for peace…

Here, in this place of remembrance, I would ask everyone together, each in his or her own way, to spend a moment in silence and prayer. Let us implore from on high the gift of commitment to the cause of peace. Peace in our homes, our families, our schools and our communities. Peace in all those places where war never seems to end.

Peace for those faces which have known nothing but pain. Peace throughout this world which God has given us as the home of all and a home for all. Simply PEACE. In this way, the lives of our dear ones will not be lives which will one day be forgotten. Instead, they will be present whenever we strive to be prophets not of tearing down but of building up, prophets of reconciliation, prophets of peace.

Bereavement Ministry at our parish includes a support group program called “Seasons of Hope.” The Covid-19 Pandemic has made grieving particularly difficult for many people. If you have experienced the loss of a loved one, recently or in the past, we invite you to join with others to navigate your grief in the light of faith.

“Seasons of Hope” is: • Prayer, discussion, and mutual support • A group that meets weekly, in-person, for six weeks at a time • Offered 2-3 times a year • Led by trained facilitators and discussion leaders, male and female • Rooted in the Catholic faith, but open to all (materials are published by Ave Maria Press)

The next “Seasons of Hope” series will be on Wednesdays, 7-8:30pm, in the Parish Center (406 East 80th Street), September 15-October 20.

FIVE MINUTE JESUS Using the Gospel for Prayer – The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 19, 2021 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

Gospel Mark 9:30-37 Jesus and his disciples left from there and began a journey through Galilee, but he did not wish anyone to know about it. He was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men and they will kill him, and three days after his death the Son of Man will rise.” But they did not understand the saying, and they were afraid to question him. They came to Capernaum and, once inside the house, he began to ask them, “What were you arguing about on the way?” But they remained silent. They had been discussing among themselves on the way who was the greatest. Then he sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, “Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to me? Challenged me? What was it? Why did it have this effect on me?

Tuesday Power and fame seem to be a coveted price in our world, but Jesus came to teach the true power which is love. His love was his death on the cross. Is there something or someone that could use a loving act from me right now? Tomorrow? Daily?

Wednesday Have I received an act of love or kindness from someone else recently? How did that change me?

Thursday Jesus shows us how to get beyond our egos. Through prayer and faith, we can accomplish God’s work. What parts of my ego can I let go of today to make me more like a child of God? Friday The way young children encounter the world is pure innocence. They learn about the world with trust and simplicity. They tend to love unconditionally. Today, instead of focusing on what I can teach a child, I will think about what I can learn from them.

Saturday By welcoming a little child, Jesus lays the foundation of reaching out to the weaker members of our community. Who are they in my community? How do I reach out to them?
