K-8 Religious Education is in session, but registration is still open! 10:15-11:45am in the Parish Center (406 East 80th Street) Parents who were unable to join us for the parent meeting, please come in and pick up your Parent Folder with the calendar for the year and other important information. If you haven’t registered your child yet, please come at 10am to complete the forms. Please bring your checkbook and if this is a new registration, a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate. You can also register during the week at the parish center. If you have a rising 1st or 7th grader, please remember that two years of Religious Education (or Catholic School) are required for reception of First Communion or Confirmation. Family Faith Formation – Saturday, November 2, 2-5pm – on the theme of Reconciliation and Forgiveness – mark your calendar! No K-8 Religious Education or Adult Faith Formation on Sunday, November 3, due to NYC Marathon street closures.
Adult Faith Formation • Our Sunday Morning Scripture Discussion Group is in session, and runs 10:15-11:45am in the Parish Center each Sunday that Religious Education is in session. This group is open to any and all adults – you can become a “regular,” or just drop in occasionally as your schedule allows. Parents – this is an excellent way for your family to grow in faith together, and for you to set an excellent example for your children as to the value of formation in the faith at all ages. Adult Sacraments • Adults thinking about becoming Catholic, or Catholic adults who have missed First Communion or Confirmation – it’s never too late! Contact Maryann Tyrer, Pastoral Associate, to discuss our adult initiation process. You can begin the process any time throughout the year. Sessions are held on Sunday in the Parish Center following the noon Mass. All inquirers are welcome! Volunteers • Subs and hall monitors on Sunday mornings, and special event assistants (various times) needed for our various Faith Formation programs. Contact Maryann for more information
Liturgical Ministries All the baptized need to understand that part of their duty regarding the Liturgy is to accept some responsibility for the Liturgy, to place themselves and their God-given talents at the service of the liturgical community whenever possible. Whether one brings up the gifts at the Presentation; reads the Word of God; assists with the distribution of Communion and brings the Eucharist to those unable to be present at Mass; serves at the altar; provides music that augments the joy, solemnity, and festivity of the celebration or serves the assembled community as an usher, he or she is contributing to the worship of the community and fulfilling the responsibility that comes with Baptism. What is important is that all understand that the celebration of Liturgy is not just the responsibility of the pastor, although he is delegated by the bishop to oversee the liturgical life of the parish. Pastors need the help of the people who are serious about living out their baptismal right and responsibility to worship.

The following opportunities to serve are available at our parish. Contact the Parish Center to find out when the next training will be held. • •

Lectors – proclaim the Scripture Readings and lead the praying of the General Intercessions at Mass. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion – assist the clergy with the distribution of Holy Communion at Mass, or bring Holy Communion to sick and shut-in parishioners. (You must be at least 16 years of old and confirmed in order to serve in this ministry.) Ministers of Hospitality and Ushers – greet everyone when they arrive at Mass, distribute worship aides and bulletins, take up the collection, offer other assistance in the back of the church as needed during Mass. Assist occasionally with parish receptions and celebrations. (This is a great ministry for whole families!) Altar Servers – (4th grade through adults) – Carry cross or candles in procession, hold the book of prayers for the priest, set up and clear the altar, assist the priest during the preparation of the gifts. Music Ministries – contact our Director of Music to see how you might offer your musical talent (children’s choir and adult choir). Sacristy Assistance – cleaning and ironing altar linens, polishing brass, decorating for special liturgical feasts, and other occasional tasks.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Sometimes human relationships go awry, but Christ’s choice for us is irrevocable. In marriage celebrations, the Church always recalls God’s faithfulness to help prepare married couples for enduring the inevitable rough spots. The Byzantine liturgy does this by adorning the couple with crowns that remind them of the martyr’s crown. The couple therefore takes on a vocation of witnessing to the sacredness of life in all of its suffering and joy, and of keeping their eyes fixed on the banquet of heaven. In Eastern theology, people have a liturgical vocation to give God praise, and marriage fits within that plan. It is not so much saying prayers that counts, but becoming prayer. Interestingly, in this liturgy the couple never utters a word other than joining in the community’s chants; there are no marriage vows as such. There is therefore not a hint of our Western Christian sense that marriage is a legal contract. Rather, it is all about living out one’s baptismal vocation, embracing the cross, pouring oneself out in love, and opening to the grace of the Holy Spirit. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR ALL ARE WELCOME. It is proclaimed by our pastor Fr. Baker each week. All are welcomed here at St. Monica – St. Elizabeth of Hungary – St. Stephen of Hungary to worship, pray and serve. Living out Jesus’ message of love to all people no matter what their background - “Love another as I have loved you”. (John 15:12) We are blest here at St. Monica – St. Elizabeth of Hungary – St. Stephen of Hungary to have a parish that focuses on Jesus’ message of love and welcome. For we are a parish that is striving to provide our parishioners the fellowship and spiritual nourishment that we all so greatly desire. A place where we can create a community where our diversity becomes our strength. However, with our Church in crises ranging from the sexual abuse scandal to military conflicts overseas to immigration policies, poverty and homelessness even in our very own community it can be challenging to live our parish mantra “ALL ARE WELCOME”. We could easily question why we should become more involved in our church and its ministries. For me, the answer has always been Jesus’ focus on love and acceptance of one another. For here in this place we can learn how to build our own community of love and then spread that word out to others. At the end of every Mass the presider proclaims, “Go forth to love and serve the Lord”. And we all respond, “Thanks be to God”. By our affirmation, we all take up the responsibility as Catholics to “serve”. But how do we really do that? How do we live up to that challenge? For me, “serving the Lord” is through the gift of music that God has given me. To use my talents to create beautiful liturgies. To use my skills to develop choral singers for our choirs and encourage instrumentalists to give of their time and talents to enrich our music program. I now ask you as parishioners, what is your form of service to our church community? This month of October is ministry month. Each week you will hear someone speaking on how their call to serve - lector, eucharistic minister, minister of hospitality or altar server - has touched and enriched their lives here at St. Monica – St. Elizabeth of Hungary – St. Stephen of Hungary. If you like to sing, you may feel your “call to serve” is in one of our choirs: Adult Choir – sings for the 12 noon Mass. Rehearses on Wednesdays from 7 – 8:30 pm in the Church. No experience is necessary but is welcomed. Children’s Choir – sings at the 5:30 pm Family Mass on the first Saturday of each month. The choir rehearses on Wednesdays at St. Stephen of Hungary School on 82nd St. from 4 – 5 pm. The participate in the Xmas Concert and sing for Xmas Eve. Contemporary Ensemble – this is a new group that is forming for our 5 pm Contemporary Mass. It is geared for our young adults. We will rehearse on Sunday afternoon before the 5 pm Mass at 4:15 pm.
