Senior Ministry

Dear Parishioners, The movie The Jewish Cardinal was a great success.

Thank you, Peter, for your recommendation! We look forward to other recommendations - keep them coming! On Friday, May 29, after the noon Mass, the senior ministry invites you to attend the showing of the movie, Lilies of the Field. It is a familiar and wonderful story of Homer Smith (Sidney Poitier), an itinerant handyman who meets five nuns in need of help. After some negotiation, Homer agrees to raise money to build a chapel for the nuns. Then, with the help of the community, they build the chapel. The story goes on with so many humorous & poignant moments which should not be missed. For his role in Lilies of the Field Poitier won an Oscar! Even if you have seen the film before (as I have), enjoy it again. It is an extraordinary story of courage, conflict, & devotion! As usual, after Mass, we will enjoy a Potluck lunch in the Angelo Room of the Parish Center. The film is 95 minutes long & will begin at 1:30 pm. Upcoming Sessions: We meet May 15, and 22, and June 5, via Zoom. Our final event of the catechetical year will be a PICNIC for all Religious Education families, June 12, 1-3pm, at the St. Stephen of Hungary School play yard on 82nd Street.

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish. Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday.

Sunday sessions run 11:11am to 11:55am on Zoom. The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom).

Registration for Fall 2022 will open later in May. We plan to return to in-person sessions in the Fall.

Sacramental Preparation: •

Please remember that the Archdiocese requires two years of Religious Education or Catholic School prior to the celebration of First Penance/First Communion (2nd grade or older), and prior to the celebration of Confirmation (8th grade or older). New enrollments this fall will be eligible to receive sacraments in 2024.

Wednesdays, May 18, 25, June 1, 7-8:30pm in the Parish Center (406 East 80th Street). (Session #1 was on April 27, but it’s not too late to join us for the remaining sessions!)

Open to anyone who has lost a close friend or family member. Each session includes prayer, reflection, discussion, and mutual support. All are welcome, even if you’ve attended past series.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – Sixth Sunday of Easter May 22, 2022

It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Jn 14:23-29 Jesus said to his disciples: “Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words; yet the word you hear is not mine but that of the Father who sent me. “I have told you this while I am with you. The Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything and remind you of all that I told you. Peace, I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. You heard me tell you, ‘I am going away, and I will come back to you.’ If you loved me, you would rejoice that I am going to the Father; for the Father is greater than I. And now I have told you this before it happens, so that when it happens you may believe.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday People who Keep Jesus’ word show the love him, are loved by his Father, and both the Father and the Son will “dwell” with them. Wow! What does that mean? The word “dwell” in the gospel of John has the sense of “remaining with” or “abiding with”. Thus, if want to remain with God and abide with God, we follow his word, expressed in Jesus, who in John is himself the Word made flesh. How important is God’s word to me? Other than right now, do I meditate on God’s Word in Scripture? How can I do that more, so that God’s word might dwell more fully in me?

Wednesday On the night before he dies, Jesus promises his disciples that after he is gone, the Father will send the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who will continue to guide and teach the disciples. The word “advocate” is a strange word. It sounds like a legal term. What does it mean for someone to advocate for us? How do I understand the Spirit as my Advocate? What is the Spirit advocating for? And to whom? And why?

Thursday Even before he leaves, Jesus gives his disciples a gift. He gives them peace . His peace. That word means many things. For some it is the absence of war. For others it is the stillness of heart in the midst of strife. What does the word peace mean for me? How do I find peace in my relationship with God, and in my relationship with others?

Friday Jesus is leaving. He tells them that on the night before he dies. But they should not worry. Easier said than done!

How troubled am I by worry, anxiety, or fear? Where does that come from? How do Jesus’ reassurances affect me?

Saturday Jesus tells his disciples all this so that when it does happen, they might believe. Jesus believes that experience is the best teacher of the truth of faith. Remembering that not even the disciples had a smooth, trouble-free life. They too had dark times of doubt, and yet they are invited to believe, what has my experience of faith in God been? Where has it challenged my faith in Jesus? Where has it strengthened it?
