Engage in conversation with your family, your fellow parishioners, with anyone who is interested in the topic. Reach out to friends and family who are no longer coming to church.

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish! Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday!

Sunday sessions run 11:11am to 11:55am on Zoom! The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom).

Teen Retreats

Our St. Stephen’s 8th graders had their retreat day on February 23, with 37 teens in attendance. On February 26, our parish Religious Education Confirmation candidates were joined by 4 young men from Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish for their retreat. Both groups completed a scavenger hunt in the church to learn more about the saints and the objects and symbols found in our church. They made masks as a part of a reflection on who they are, and what they sometimes hide about themselves. They discussed the role of the Holy Spirit in their lives, and prepared to renew their baptismal promises at Confirmation. Our Church is in good hands with these fine young people!

LENT 2022 Fasting - Every person between the age of 18 and 59 must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Fasting consists of one full meal per day, with two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal, and no snacks.

Abstinence – Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat and items made with meat on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and every Friday of Lent.

Using the Gospel for Prayer – Second Sunday of Lent - March 13, 2022

It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells.

2. Reflect on the questions suggested for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you have read can be lived out that day. 4. Thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Luke 9:28b-36 Jesus took Peter, James, and John and went up the mountain to pray. While he was praying, his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses, and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standi ng with him. As they were about to depart from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” But he did not know what he was saying. While he was still speaking, a cloud came and cast a shadow over the, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.

Then from the cloud came a voice that said, “This is my chosen Son; listen to him.” After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at the time tell anyone what they had seen.”

Monday, March 7 Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you? What conversion of mind, heart, and life is the Lord asking of you?

Tuesday, March 8 The gospel relates another example of Jesus going off to pray. As he approached his passion and death, he wanted and needed to talk with his Father. Do you try to find some quiet time for prayer every day? Have you ever thought about making a retreat or day of recollection? You might want to consider participating in our parish Lenten Retreat in the church on Saturday morning, April 9th.

Wednesday, March 9 Jesus’ Transfiguration took place on the top of Mount Tabor. Have you ever had a “mountaintop” faith experience that made a significant difference in your life? Did it change you, your relationship with God? Thursday, March 10 While Jesus was praying his faced changed in appearance. For what do you need to pray for at this time in your life?

How has prayer changed you?

Friday, March 11 Peter, James, and John were overcome by sleep. What overcomes your desire to follow Jesus? How can you wake up to what God is asking of you?

Saturday, March 12 The Father’s voice came from the cloud, “This is my chosen Son, listen to him? In prayer, do you expect the Lord to speak to you? What was the last thing he said to you?

From the Pastor 03.06.2022 Make a Joyful Noise!

It was Saint Augustine who said, “The one who sings, prays twice”. However, for most Catholics, music tends to be an afterthought. Some would say that is due to the centuries of parishes celebrating the “extraordinary form” of the mass, i.e., the mass as it was celebrated before the changes instituted by the Second Vatican Council in the late 1960’s. While that form of mass was the inspiration for innumerable works of music, in most parishes the type of mass celebrated was “Low Mass” with the priest praying quietly up front, people sitting obediently in their pews, reading in their prayer books, praying their rosaries, meditating on the art and the stained glass. Music might have been present, but often only as adornment.

The Second Vatican Council sought to change that, but old habits die hard. That is why when parishes have a vibrant music program, such as we do, it can be such a draw for people for whom music both enables prayer and expresses faith. There are still relatively few pastors who get this connection between music, faith, song, prayer, and vibrant Catholic life. Parishes with an intentional music program are thus still relatively rare.

One of the people whom I have known in my life who “gets” this connection is Mr. Richard Fish. He and I went to seminary together. He left shortly before ordination and became a parish musician in Massachusetts; first in Beverly, north of Boston, and then on Cape Cod. Richard’s real gift however is to be a teacher of music, both in parish and at school. He functioned as director of music at the Landmark School in Beverly, MA, and now at the St. John Paul II School in Hyannis, MA, where he has built a vibrant music program. Rich uses that program not only to train singers but to form them as Catholics who both pray and sing – preferably at the same time!

Part of that formation is to take his high school choir on tour. For several years the St. John Paul II Concert and Chamber Choirs have sung for the students at St. Stephen of Hungary School. This year however, we will be graced with them at Sunday mass.

On next Sunday, March 13, 2022, Mr. Richard Fish and his choirs will sing at the “family-friendly” 10 am mass. Our masses during Lent tend to be simpler, as we focus on chant and more austere “Lenten” music. This mass will feature that chant but will also be full of beautiful choral music as these young voices give expression to our faith and support our prayer with song. Think of it as a foretaste of Easter at the start of Lent.

I invite everyone to come on that Sunday and to listen, to pray and to sing with these young women and men.

The pews are back! . . . While the pews have not yet returned as of this writing, I am promised that by the time you are reading this they will have. While supplies chain issues have delayed the kneelers on some of them (it is hard for them to get the proper foam rubber for the padding!) those kneelers will soon be in place and the restoration of our pews will be complete.

While there will be a few more “tweaks” the renovation and restoration of our church’s interior, begun way back in 2018 with the air conditioning of the church, will be complete. Our organ will be restored. By this summer, the parish center will also be complete, with new windows, new heating and air conditioning systems, a new roof, handicap accessibility and of course the renovated St. Elizabeth of Hungary Chapel. We now must turn to the repair of the exterior and replacement of the rooves. After that, we will be able to turn to the restoration of the parish hall.
