You can begin this process at any time throughout the year. We gather occasionally over the summer, and weekly beginning in September.

Five Minute Jesus
Using the Gospel for Prayer – Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time – 06/27/21 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for next Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions suggested for each day of the week. 3. Make some resolutions about how what you reflect upon can be lived that day. 4. Thank God for speaking to you through your reflection. Gospel – Mark 5:21-24, 35b-43 (Full reading is Mark 5:21-43)
When Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around him, and he stayed close to the sea. One of the synagogue officials, named Jairus, came forward. Seeing him he fell at his feet and pleaded earnestly with him saying, “My daughter is at the point of death. Please, come lay your hands on her that she may get well and live.” He went off with him, and a large crowd followed him and pressed upon him. While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house arrived and said, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?” Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” He did not allow anyone to accompany him inside except Peter, James, and John, the brother of James. When they arrived at the house of the synagogue official, he caught sight of a commotion, people wailing and weeping loudly. So, he went in and said to them, “Why this commotion and weeping? This child is not dead, but asleep. And they ridiculed him. Then he put them all out. He took along the child’s father and mother and those who were with him and entered the room where the child was. He took the child by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you arise!” The girl, a child of twelve, arose immediately and walked around. At this they were utterly astounded. He gave strict orders that no one should know this and said that she should be given something to eat.
Monday, June 21st Was there something in this reading that struck you? What in this passage comforted you? Challenged you? What message does God want you to hear? Tuesday, June 22nd In Jairus’ plea that his daughter be made well, we hear the concern of every parent for the life and well-being of their child. If you are a parent, how often do you lift up your child to Jesus in prayer? What do you pray for? If you are not a parent, do you pray for the children of family and friends? Wednesday, June 23rd Jesus tells Jairus, “Do not be afraid, just have faith.” Jesus repeats this often during his ministry so there must be a reason for him doing so. Why does he say, “Be not afraid?” Where might fear impact your ability to trust in God? Thursday, June 24th It would seem that perhaps Jairus approaches Jesus asking him to heal his daughter because all other possibilities have been exhausted. When do you turn to God to ask for help? When you are desperate, or do you do so as a matter of course? Friday, June 25th Pope Francis, in commenting on this gospel, says, “The message is clear, and it can be summed up in one question: Do we believe that Jesus can heal us and can raise us from the dead?” Do you live in the certainty of the resurrection? Do you believe that our ultimate goal is to allow Jesus to lead us to the house of the Father? Saturday, June 26th Jesus heals Jairus’ daughter by taking her by the hand and telling her to get up. He touches her. We touch Jesus when we extend our hands to receive the Eucharist. Do you use this moment to ask Jesus for the healing you need in your life?
From the Pastor 06.20.21 Reappointment Excerpts from a letter dated June 8, 2021 from Timothy Cardinal Dolan: Dear Father Baker: When you were appointed Pastor of the Parish of Saint Monica – Saint Stephen of Hungary – Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, in Manhattan on August 1, 2015, you were given the privilege and responsibility of serving your parishioners by proclaiming the Gospel, handing on the Tradition of the Church and administering the Sacraments. The Parish Evaluation conducted under the auspices of the Priests’ Personnel Board has indicated that, with the assistance of your staff, you have offered sensitive pastoral care to meet the spiritual and communal needs of your parishioners. With much happiness and gratitude, I appoint you to a second six-year term. Whew! So, it is official. As of August 1, 2021, I will begin my second term as your pastor. When I look back over the past six years it is incredible how fast the time has gone, and how much we have accomplished. The parish properties are being renewed and updated, our parish school, St. Stephen of Hungary, is growing, the former communities of St. Stephen and St. Elizabeth, along with St. Monica, have come together into a single parish community which grows ever stronger. And all that, amid crises in the world, scandals in the Church, and a pandemic. It would have been impossible to achieve all this without the collaboration of our parish staff, our many volunteers, catechists, and lay ministers. Thank you for all your support these past six years. There is still so much to do, and I look forward to doing it all with you as your pastor. North Carolina – Finally! Many of you think that I was born and raised down south. I was not. I was born and raised in Nanuet, in Rockland County, right here in New York. My father was from North Carolina, however, and when he retired, he and my mother moved there. My older brother went to college there and then settled in Raleigh, where he raised his family. While my father ordained that I too should go to a southern school, as soon as possible afterwards I came home to New York. I became a Catholic, a priest, and the rest is, well, history. I usually see my brother Dan two to three times a year, but this year, that has been impossible. I have not seen him since Christmas 2019. Thus, now that things are finally slowing down, the school year has ended, and we are shifting into summer mode, I am headed off to visit my family. I will be gone from June 22nd through the 29th.
