2021 Year in Review 2021 was a difficult year in many respects, but it was also a year where we came together and did some good work on behalf of our Common Home. The Green Team has been meeting monthly via Zoom, and we look forward to transitioning to more live events this coming year as safety allows. All are welcome to join us in 2022! Below are some of the past year's highlights from your St. Monica's Green Team.

We held two Laudato Si prayer walks in Central Park, one in June and one in October.

We co-sponsored a Climate Briefing for NYC Candidates for candidates running for local city offices in 2021.

We incorporated Pope Francis's Laudato Si into Family Faith Formation.

We sold St. Monica's branded re-usable bags to make it more convenient for people to avoid single-use plastic or paper bags at the store.

We worked with Father Baker and Monsignor Ivers to incorporate intentions for the natural world and the environment into the Prayers of the Faithful on a regular basis.

We met with Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney to advocate for better climate policies.

We had a follow-up call with one of the Congresswoman's staff, this time joined by parishioners from St. Francis Xavier, St. Igantius Loyola, and St. Francis De Sales to advocate for specific measures around clean energy, electric vehicles, and regenerative agriculture.

We submitted a proposal for a gardening project at St. Stephen's School.

We signed the Catholic Climate Petition (Healthy Planet, Healthy People) ahead of the UN Climate meeting in Glasgow.

We participated in the 2021 Catholic Climate Covenant Conference sponsored by Creighton University.

The January 21 Senior Ministry Gathering has been canceled in order to keep everyone safe during this Covid surge.

Any senior citizens wishing to be more active in our parish, please contact the parish office to be put in touch with someone from the ministry, so that we can keep you informed about upcoming events.

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish! Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday!

Seasons of Hope meets for six consecutive weeks. Anyone who is mourning the loss of a loved one is encouraged to attend and invited to bring a friend or family member. The group is open to men and women, and we have the option of separate discussion groups for men and for women. Those who have attended previous Seasons of Hope series are also welcome to participate.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time – January 23, 2022 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received.

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region.

He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.

Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Monday Was there something in this reading that spoke to you? Comforted you? Challenged you? What was it? Why did it have this effect on you?

Tuesday Luke begins his gospel account with an explanation of his purpose in writing, namely, “so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received.” Reflect today on the teachings you have received. How has the faith been handed on to you, and how have you become certain of the faith you have received?

Wednesday While Luke begins his work with an explanation of his purpose, Jesus also begins his public ministry with an explanation of his purpose. The Spirit of the Lord has sent him to fulfill the words he reads from the prophet Isaiah. In a sense, this is Jesus’ “mission statement.” If someone asked you, “what is your mission statement?” how might you respond?

Thursday When Jesus returns to his hometown to teach in the synagogue, he is initially well received. However, as he continues to teach, the crowd quickly turns against him and throws him out of town. Sometimes the Scriptures comfort the afflicted, and sometimes they afflict the comfortable. When have Jesus’ teachings comforted you?

When have they challenged you?

Friday How did Jesus bring glad tidings to the poor or proclaim liberty to captives, restore sight to the blind or let the oppressed go free during his ministry on earth? How does Jesus continue to fulfill this mission in our own time?

Saturday How can we continue Jesus’ ministry to the poor, to captives, to the blind, to the oppressed? Who are those who need to hear and experience the Good News of Jesus? What specific steps could we take to address some of the needs we see around us every day?

From the Pastor 01.16.22 Ordinary Time Just look at the sanctuary and it is clear. The Christmas Season is over. The trees and wreaths are gone, the manger removed, and while the poinsettias are still in the sanctuary, they are there only because we don’t want to just throw them out. Nevertheless, their presence reminds us that the holiday season, which was so transformed again this year by the Coronavirus, is over.

I don’t know if your holiday season was a good one or bad. For many of us, despite Covid, this past Christmas was a season of reunions with family and friends. It was a joyous time, a busy time – and for us here, an exhausting time! You’ll excuse this priest at least of being relieved.

From now until Ash Wednesday begins the Season of Lent on March Second, our church finds itself in the season of Ordinary Time. For many that name is an unfortunate translation of the Latin name for the season, which has means something like the “ordered number of weeks in the year” in between the seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter, when we focus on the coming and birth of Jesus and his death and resurrection. During Ordinary Time the priests wear green as a symbol growth, the readings focus on the ministry and message of Jesus and thus the beginning and growth of the Church.

Ordinary Time is thus ordered, not ordinary. And yet, I for one am glad for the respite. Despite the Coronavirus, we have trained new ministers, have a bunch of new altar servers, and have continued our ministry in the face of considerable difficulty. Thank all of you for your support and assistance in that. So many people have come to me over the past Holiday Season and thanked me for our parish being like a light in the middle of Yorkville. If we are, it is not because of me but because of us all.

Pew Restoration Stage Two and Three Just a reminder: as you can see the rear pews are out for restoration and repair. Once they return in a few weeks, the front pews will be removed. We are promised they will all be back in place by Ash Wednesday.

A Heads Up The creche or manger that we have been using for the past several years is one that is dear to the members of the St. Stephen Community. We brought it over after 2015 and have used it since. However, many of you commented that it was a little the worse for weather. This is unfortunately true, with several pieces chipped cracked, broken and glued together.

I am thinking of getting a new Manger for the parish, and offering the pieces out to be memorialized, like we did with the images of the saints. Any one interested? Stay tuned to this column for more information!
