Treasures of our Tradition SAINT JOHN MARY VIANNEY (1786-1859) August 4 A busy pastor jokingly suggests the secret of John Vianney’s holiness: “He died seventeen years before telephones!” Call they didn’t, but visit they did, keeping Vianney eighteen hours a day in the confessional. Stories abound of reading hearts and exorcisms, but Vianney’s first miracle was getting ordained. Difficulty with studies delayed him, prompting the rector’s apology to the bishop, “So far to ordain just one, especially this one!” The bishop, who could not know he was ordaining the future patron saint of parish priests, replied, “No burden to ordain one good priest!” In Ars, only an elderly handful attended Mass, “praying,” one told Vianney, “for a priest with brains.” But he stayed forty-two years, fulfilling the promise he made the day he arrived. In a sculpture just outside the village Vianney points skyward: “Show me the way to Ars,” he tells a boy, “and I’ll show you the way to heaven.” To someone who feared there was no heaven beyond the grave, Vianney smiled, “My child, it would have been heaven enough to have lived as Jesus’ disciple on earth.”

Parish Life This past Thursday, our Young Adult Ministry (ages 18-35), in collaboration with our Senior Ministry, sponsored a virtual discussion of the film Selma (2014). This was the second film in a series dedicated to discussing race and racism in America. Everything from the theme, to the cinematography and even the music was discussed!

AINTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT .

This series is featured in our bulletin at least once a month and focuses on the lives of the Saints whose images adorn our beautiful church.

SAINT JOHN PAUL II (1920-2005) Feast Day: October 22nd Born in Wadowice, Poland, Karol Jozef Wojtyla had lost his mother, father, and older brother before his 21st birthday. Karol’s promising academic career at Krakow’s Jagiellonian University was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. While working in a quarry and a chemical factory, he enrolled in an “underground” seminary in Kraków. Ordained in 1946, he was immediately sent to Rome where he earned a doctorate in theology. Soon after, Fr. Wojtyla earned a doctorate in philosophy and began teaching that subject at Poland’s University of Lublin.

Bishop Wojtyla attended all four sessions of Vatican II and contributed especially to its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. Appointed as archbishop of Kraków in 1964, he was named a cardinal three years later.

Elected pope in October 1978, he took the name of his short-lived, immediate predecessor. Pope John Paul II was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. In time, he made pastoral visits to 124 countries! John Paul II promoted ecumenical and interfaith initiatives, especially the 1986 Day of Prayer for World Peace in Assisi. He visited Rome’s main synagogue and the Western Wall in Jerusalem; he also established diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Israel. He improved Catholic-Muslim relations, and in 2001 visited a mosque in Damascus, Syria.

The Great Jubilee of the Year 2000, a key event in John Paul’s ministry, was marked by special celebrations in Rome and elsewhere for Catholics and other Christians. Relations with the Orthodox Churches improved considerably during his papacy.

“Christ is the center of the universe and of human history” was the opening line of John Paul II’s 1979 encyclical, Redeemer of the Human Race. In 1995, he described himself to the United Nations General Assembly as “a witness to hope.”

John Paul II began World Youth Day and traveled to several countries for those celebrations.

One of the most well-remembered photos of John Paul II’s pontificate was his one-on-one conversation in 1983, with Mehmet Ali Agca, who had attempted to assassinate him two years earlier.

In his 27 years of papal ministry, John Paul II wrote 14 encyclicals and five books, canonized 482 saints and beatified 1,338 people. In the last years of his life, he suffered from Parkinson’s disease and was forced to cut back on some of his activities.

K-8 Religious Education • K-8 Religious Education will be online (via ZOOM) this Fall! We hope this will make it easier for your children to participate regularly, and allay your fears about the COVID-19 pandemic. We simply do not have the space to allow for necessary social distancing. No ZOOM account is necessary - you will be sent a link to connect each Sunday morning. All you need is internet access and a tablet or computer. This method of delivery has been approved by the Archdiocese of New York and by our pastor, and it will fulfill all Archdiocesan and parish requirements.

• Registration is now open. You may download the form on our website, complete it, attach a check, and mail it in, OR, you may register in person and pay fees at the parish center. New registrations must include a copy of the child’s baptismal certificate.

• Once you have completed registration, you will be notified of the dates when you can pick up your child’s textbook and support materials. Parent meetings will be offered in September via ZOOM. • The first K-8 Religious Education session is Sunday, October 4, 2020, at 10:15am. Registration must be completed by October 1. We hope the delayed start will allow everyone to settle in at school and prepare for the new religious education format.

Sacramental Preparation for Children and Teens • First Penance, First Communion, Confirmation o The Archdiocese of New York requires two years of either Catholic School or Parish Religious Education immediately before the reception of First Communion (2nd grade or up) or Confirmation (8th grade or up). o First Penance and First Communion have an at-home component that is to be completed in addition to regular attendance in Religious Education.

Adult Faith Formation – open to all adults!

• Sunday Morning Scripture Discussions resume on October 18, 10:15-11:45am at the Parish Center • Friday Evening Prayer year round in the chapel at 5:10pm each week – all are welcome Adults who are thinking about becoming Catholic, or Catholic adults who are missing First Communion and/or Confirmation - contact Maryann Tyrer, Pastoral Associate, to discuss our adult initiation process. You can begin the process any time throughout the year.

BEREAVEMENT MINISTRY

We are launching a new ministry here at the parish this fall for anyone who has lost a loved one over the past couple of years. Programming will begin in November, but we need to begin now to recruit and form a team for this ministry. If you feel God calling you to assist those who are grieving, to listen to their stories with compassion and affirmation, please contact Maryann Tyrer for further discussion. No prior experience is needed, although it would be welcomed. The Archdiocese will provide training once we have formed a team.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES Contact Maryann Tyrer at mtyrer@stelmo79.org if you are interested in learning more about any of the following opportunities to get involved in our Lifelong Faith Formation programs. Training and resources provided – no experience needed. Screening and background check required.

• Catechists and assistants for elementary and junior high aged students and families– teach our faith online (for now) and in person (once it’s safe to gather in groups.)

Usually Sunday mornings.

• Assistants and discussion group leaders for adult faith formation and adult sacramental formation (RCIA) – assist lead catechists and facilitate small group discussions. These groups meet in person, practicing social distancing. Sunday mornings, Saturdays, or weeknight evenings.

• Hospitality assistants (will begin once social distancing rules have loosened) – assist with set up, refreshments, and clean up for Lifelong Faith Formation events (both adult and family.) Sunday mornings, Saturdays, or weeknight evenings.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time – August 9, 2020 It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4.

Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to Matthew 14:22-33 After he had fed the people, Jesus made the disciples get into a boat and precede him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. After doing so, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When it was evening he was there alone. Meanwhile the boat, already a few miles offshore, was being tossed about by the waves, for the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night, he came toward them walking on the sea. When the disciples saw him walking on the sea they were terrified. “It is a ghost,” they said, and they cried out in fear. At once Jesus spoke to them, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter said to him in reply, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” After they got into the boat, the wind died down. Those who were in the boat did him homage, saying, “Truly, you are the Son of God.” Sunday Was there something in this reading that spoke to me? Comforted me? Challenged me? What was it? Why did it have this effect on me?

Monday This week’s gospel takes place after the feeding miracle last week. After caring for the people, healing and feeding them, Jesus send his disciples and the crowds off. Why? Because he needs some time alone. We all need time alone. We call it “Me Time” But with Jesus it is “We Time” he goes off to pray to his Father in Heaven. What do I do to take time for myself? What do I do to make that “Me Time” into “We Time” by using it to spend time with God? How could I be more regular in doing it?

Tuesday Boats are important in the stories about Jesus. His disciples were fishermen. They traveled in boats as they preached. Jesus preached from a boat just a little way offshore. Boat are much more than a means of transportation in the gospels; they are a symbol. But of what? What does a boat symbolize for me? Have I ever been in a boat? How did I feel? Did I feel safe, or threatened by the waves? In control, or at the mercy of the ocean? What can being in a boat say to me about my relationship with God? Wednesday The disciples are in a boat in the midst of a strong wind. Clearly they are stuck. And they see Jesus coming to them walking on the water. Has there ever been a time when I was stuck in the middle of a storm? Maybe not on a lake but in my life? What was that storm? And how did God come to me in that storm? How did I live through it? And how was I changed by it?

Thursday Today we are still dealing with the disciples in the boat being foundered by the waves. It says they are terrified.

With one exception. Peter. HE asks Jesus to let him walk on the water amidst the waves too. Why did Peter want to do this? Would I ever ask to walk on the waves in the storms of my life? Peter tries but fails. What does this say about his relationship with Jesus? What does this say about my relationship with him in the storms of my life?

Friday At the end of the Gospel Jesus saves Peter, the winds calm down, and the disciples “did him homage” – worshiped him because they believed that Jesus was the Son of God. Clearly the story is about recognizing that Jesus is the one who gets us through the storms of life – even when we, like Peter, doubt. Has there been a time when I was in a storm? How did I get through it? Where was God in it? How did Jesus help me through the storm? And did I ever thank him?
