Word

For months now we have had scaffolding obscuring the front of our church. This was because we discovered that pieces of the front façade had come loose over the years and were in danger of falling. In the ensuing months we have been working with our capital project manager Zubatkin, obtaining estimates for a repair of the facade, as well as a replacement of the two lower roofs on the east and west sides of the church, which are also in poor shape. When we sold our air rights, we kept part of those funds in an investment account designated for capital repairs. This money has been a large part of what has driven the renovation of the parish center, the replacement of the parish boiler, and the renovations in our church. The final project was to have been the renovation of the parish hall beneath the church. When we discovered the problems with the roof and façade however, we knew we had to use the remaining money in this investment account for these emergency items. Sadly, what we discovered is that together the project will be more than the money we have left! Some of you might be scratching your heads, and thinking, ‘But we got millions for our air rights?!’ You would be right. However, the bulk of the money we received was invested for benefit of the church and the school. We have the programs and staffing we do, the music we enjoy, the religious formation for people of all ages we offer, precisely because of the interest we get from these investments. We will not use their principal for projects and jeopardize our long-term financial stability.

Many of you have commented on how quiet the construction has been next door. It’s so quiet because it is not happening! The construction of a clinic and treatment center for the Hospital for Special Surgery was rolling along quickly – that is until they went too quickly and the sidewalk along First Avenue began to collapse! The Department of Buildings stepped in and shut down the construction for review.

The stoppage isn’t permanent of course. But it will give us a few more weeks of sunshine before our neighbor begins to inch skywards. Scaffolding on the Façade and Roof Replacement Update

I will keep you posted on all these developments, but in the meantime, expect the scaffolding to be up through the end of the year!

We are currently planning on fixing the façade. This will enable us to remove the scaffolding and the church will look normal once again. We have made some repairs to the roofs, and we are hopeful that they will last a few more years. In the meantime, we are working on the sale of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church and rectory. That sale, which was supposed to take place in 2016, has been held up by a petition in Rome by some of St. Elizabeth’s former members to reopen the church. We have no idea if that petition will be resolved in our favor, or when. Were we to be able to sell that property, however, that would enable us not only to replace the roofs but also to complete the renovation of our parish facilities and enable the buildout of our school.
