How to Participate in the Synod •

Friday, April 22, following the noon Mass in the church, and our usual Pot-Luck Luncheon in the Parish Center, the Senior Ministry will sponsor the film The Jewish Cardinal.

This 1-hour, 40-minute, film is based on the incredible true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, a Jewish man who, at a young age, converted to Catholicism, became a priest, and was appointed Archbishop of Paris by John Paul II. Celebrating his dual identity as a Catholic Jew, he earned friends and enemies from both faiths. After WWII, he served as mediator in a conflict with the Carmelite nuns who wanted a convent built within the walls of Auschwitz. Please join us! RSVP to Gladys at 212-288-6250 to attend.

Upcoming Sessions: No sessions April 10 and 17. We resume on April 24. No sessions on May 1st (Sacraments Weekend!)

Participation in Sunday (or Saturday evening) Eucharist is an integral part of Religious Education in our parish. Our 10am Mass on Sunday is now a Family-Friendly Mass every Sunday.

Sunday sessions run 11:11am to 11:55am on Zoom! The timing of Religious Ed sessions allows your family to attend the Mass of your choice (in person or via Zoom).

Registration for Fall 2022 will open in May. We plan to return to in-person sessions in the Fall.

Please remember that the Archdiocese requires two years of Religious Education or Catholic School prior to the celebration of First Penance/First Communion (2nd grade or older), and prior to the celebration of Confirmation (8th grade or older). New enrollments this fall will be eligible to receive sacraments in 2024.

Five Minute Jesus Using the Gospel for Prayer – Easter Sunday April 17, 2022

It’s simple. 1. Read the Gospel for the following Sunday slowly, reflecting on the story it tells. 2. Reflect on the questions assigned for each day. 3. Make some resolution about how what you read can be lived that day. 4. Then thank God for speaking to you through this reflection.

The Gospel according to John 20:1-9 On the first day of the week, Mary of Magdala came to the tomb early in the morning, while it was still dark, and saw the stone removed from the tomb. So, she ran and went to Simon Peter and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and told them, “They have taken the Lord from the tomb, and we don’t know where they put him.” So, Peter and the other disciple went out and came to the tomb. They both ran, but the other disciple ran faster than Peter and arrived at the tomb first; he bent down and saw the burial cloths there, but did not go in. When Simon Peter arrived after him, he went into the tomb and saw the burial cloths there, and the cloth that had covered his head, not with the burial cloths but rolled up in a separate place. Then the other disciple also went in, the one who had arrived at the tomb first, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.

Monday 4/11 Was there something in this reading that spoke to me? Comforted me? Challenged me? What was it? Why did it have this effect on me?

Tuesday 4/12 In John’s Gospel it is Mary of Magdala, (Mary Magdalene) who takes center stage. She is the one who first sees the risen Jesus.

It is she who tells the other disciples; she is the first evangelist of the resurrection. Women in John’s day were not trusted as witnesses in courts of law. They had to be subservient to men, indeed they were supposed to belong to men. And yet here was Mary, no one’s husband, a follower of Jesus, and faithful to him when the other disciples fled. What does it mean for John to insist that it was a woman who first cried out, “Jesus is risen!”? What does it mean for women? What does it say to me?

Wednesday 4/13 The Gospel is clear that Mary came when it was still dark. Darkness is a fraught symbol in modern culture. People see the use of darkness as having prejudicial, even racist overtones. What does it mean for Mary to come “when it was still dark”? Have I ever found myself in darkness? Is there a way I can understand this symbol in a positive way? What does the darkness symbolize for me?

Thursday 4/14 Mary tells Peter and “the disciple whom Jesus loved” that the tomb had been opened and that Jesus is risen. We know who Peter is, but who is this other disciple? Most scholars believe it is the John who was the source of the stories at the core of this Gospel. Some believe the author of the Gospel wants to emphasize John’s special role in the life of Jesus as the “beloved disciple.” Others don’t believe he existed at all. What do I believe? What does it mean to me to hear that Jesus had/has a beloved disciple? What made him so deserving of special love? How can I become like that beloved disciple?

Friday 4/15 The race of Peter and John to the tomb is almost comical. The beloved disciple is faster and arrives first but let’s Peter go into the tomb first. He believes and then the beloved disciple enters “and believes”. And yet, the Gospel states clearly, that they did not understand that Jesus had to rise. What then did they believe? Mary’s testimony of the empty tomb? Clearly something more was needed. What do I believe about the resurrection? And if my belief in or understanding of, the resurrection of Jesus is weak or failing, what would I need to be able to “enter and believe”?

Saturday 4/16 The final line in today’s Gospel says, “they did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” Clearly, they mean the Hebrew Scriptures – the Old Testament, for the New Testament had not been written yet. The early Church believed that the resurrection of Jesus was predicted in the Old Testament, but that people needed the experience of Jesus’ resurrection to understand it in that way. Have there ever been times in my life when I just didn’t understand something, and then suddenly, in a flash, I “saw” it, I “got” it? When was that? What did it take for me to see what I did not see before? Does this help me to understand what is happening to the disciples?

From the Pastor – 04.10.22 Wholly Week 2022 I like words. In religious education I will take one word and trace its origin back to its earliest known roots. Those roots often shed light, on why we use the word the way we do and offer a deeper understanding of the word itself.

One word I talk about a lot is holy. If I were to ask any of us to define that word, most of us would refer to God. “God-like” we might say. “Good” or “humble” others might add. And I guess that is how we understand the word nowadays. But the word “holy” when traced back to its ancient roots, means more like “complete” and “entire”. It is far more closely related to modern words such as hale as in the sense of healthy, or whole as in the sense of complete.

Thus, to be “holy” in its original sense means to be complete or perfected; to be the way God wants us to be. Hence people can be holy (we call them saints), things can be blessed so that they might be holy and used in God’s service, and our Church speaks of the universal call to holiness – that is, that because of our baptisms, every Christian is called to become, through faith and God’s grace, the people God calls us to be – holy.

Worship is the way we respond to that call, as well as the way we prepare ourselves to live out that call in the world. This week is the most important part of our Church’s yearly worship, when we remember, what Jesus was called to do by his Father, the Love with which he did it, and how through his suffering and death on the cross he revealed who he truly is - in all his “wholeness”: the Son of God. We call this week H oly Week. But over the past several years this week has not been whole. The last time we had a normal Holy Week was in 2019. Holy Week 2020 did not happen at all. In 2021 its celebration was stunted with social distancing rules and mask requirements, prohibitions against foot-washing, processions, and the suspensions of many of the things that make Holy Week so meaningful for so many.

However, this year Holy Week will be WHOLE. Aside from a few limitations, we will celebrate the mysteries of God’s love reflected in Jesus’ death and resurrection fully. I invite everyone to respond to God’s call to become the people God creates and calls us to be and worship this week – in person. We will of course livestream our liturgies. We do this as an aid to the homebound and as a form of evangelization. But just ask anyone who is truly homebound or who cannot be here because they have moved, and they will tell you that a livestreamed mass is no replacement for actual worship. It’s like the difference between attending a marriage feast and watching a video of it. Its nice. But it’s not complete; it is not whole.

Come and worship with us again as Holy Week becomes “Wholly Week” again, as through sign and symbol, song and sacrament, we are made whole.
