Pilgrimage 2022 In 1633, the people of the German village of Oberammergau made a promise: if their community was spared from the plague, they would perform a Passion Play every ten years in thanksgiving. The village was spared, and the first play was staged the following year. Over 2000 citizens make up the cast, chorus, orchestra, and technicians that produce the play, and hundreds of thousands of people now make the pilgrimage from all over the world to see this spectacular event. This is the last weekend to drop off donations for our annual food drive which is done to support the New York Common Pantry. Please be sure to leave your donations in front of St. Joseph’s Altar. As Fr. Baker has mentioned, the NY Common Pantry reported that need is up 3000% (yes, three thousand) and so we are very grateful to those who have generously donated! We continue to meet online each Sunday morning – but will be taking November 29th off for the Thanksgiving holiday. If your child is not in a Catholic School, two years of religious education are required prior to First Communion, and again prior to Confirmation.
Adult Faith Formation:
Our Sunday morning Scripture Discussions are underway, each Sunday, 10:15-11:45am, in our Parish Center (with masks and social distancing). All are invited to join us any Sunday to learn more about your faith, and how the Sunday Mass Scripture readings can be a guide for living our faith in today’s world. No registration required – simply come to the Parish Center (406 East 80th Street) and ring the doorbell.
Adult Sacraments of Initiation (RCIA):
If you have ever thought about becoming Catholic, or if you are a baptized Catholic who has not yet celebrated First Communion or Confirmation, please contact Maryann Tyrer at mtyrer@stelmo79.org to discuss our adult initiation process (commonly known as the RCIA). You can begin this process at any time throughout the year. Face-to-face gatherings (with masks and social distancing) are underway immediately following the 12noon Mass, at the Parish Center. An online Zoom link will also be made available for those who are unable to join us in person due to health issues or remote location.
Baptism Preparation for Parents and Godparents of Young Children
If you wish to have your infant/young child (under the age of 7) baptized, you will need to participate in a Baptism Preparation Class. Godparents are strongly encouraged to take the class as well. These sessions are offered here in the parish three times a month, including an online option. If you are serving as a godparent at another parish, you may participate in our class, and will receive a certificate of participation to bring to the parish of baptism. Call the parish center to sign up.
Bereavement Ministry at our Parish
This is a new and developing ministry at our parish. We seek to: • accompany those who are grieving a significant loss, • assist them in acknowledging and understanding their grief, • offer a Catholic Christian faith perspective that brings hope and healing to their bereavement. If you feel called to join the facilitator team for this ministry, training will be offered in December. Contact Maryann Tyrer at mtyrer@stelmo79.org for more information.

From the Pastor 11.22.2020 A Glimpse of the Future While Remembering the Past One of the most traditional of Catholic practices is remembering the dead during the month of November. We begin the month with All Saints Day on November 1st and follow it on November 2nd with All Souls Day. People make offerings to have their departed loved ones remembered by the priest at all the masses during the month, and here in our parish we erect an “Altar of Remembrance” upon which we place the photos of our deceased family members and friends and ask that parishioners and visitors pray for them, using the traditional prayer for the dead found on a card on the altar rail in front of the altar. November is a logical month for remembering our departed loved ones, as it stands on the threshold of what we call the “holiday season” beginning with thanksgiving and stretching through New Year’s Day. That period of time, filled with strong memories of Christmases past, is often a time where the loss of deceased loved ones hits particularly hard. We struggle for a way to process the loss and deal with the sadness and anger, especially if the loss is recent. Ms. Maryann Tyrer, our Pastoral Associate for Christian Formation is beginning a Bereavement Ministry which will reach out to those in our community who continue to suffer from the loss of a loved one. A six-week series of gatherings, beginning on January 7th, and repeated periodically throughout the year, will help people process their grief in the context of faith and the support of others who are walking the same journey. Although the Bereavement Group does not begin until January, the ministry began last Saturday with a morning of reflection for those Facing the Holidays after the Loss of a Loved One. The 90 minute service of prayer, music and reflection was led by Maryann, with music provided by our Music Director John Zupan and our volunteer cellist, Colleen Ruddy. It was wonderful. The music was powerful and supported a prayerful reflective environment. The readings, done by Anne Sabatini, were taken from the funeral liturgy, but the reflection, proclaimed by Maryann, gave powerful expression to the faith that those readings proclaimed. It was a deeply moving event, and one we will offer each November as another way to mark this month as a time of remembering those whom we love through prayer. . . . but the glimpse of the future: you’ll notice there was one name NOT mentioned in the service; my name. This ministry is being entirely carried out by our pastoral staff, independent of me. Of course, I give my support and guidance, but did not lead it, read at it nor preach for it. I actually just attended it, to my great benefit. Why do I emphasize this? Because in the past such services would have been clergy-led. But if we want to continue to have such meaningful, prayerful experiences in a Church with fewer ordained people, it HAS to be our laity who organize, read, preach and lead. In a celebration of one of our most traditional of devotions, remembering the dead, we catch a glimpse of what the Future of the Church could look like. If it does then we are in good hands indeed.
