very February for the past six years, we’ve stood at the brink of a new summer season and tried to peer into the future. And every year we approach this new beginning with a bit of trepidation. Beginning with our first book in 2008 (yes, this is our sixth year!) we worried, like everyone else, about the sluggish economy. And just as those problems seemed to be fading, we ran smack dab into Superstorm Sandy (or technically, she ran into us). We had no idea when we ventured out the day Sandy approached how much havoc she would wreak on our town. But when the rain finally cleared, and we took our first walk through the city, we were amazed by what we saw:

merchants and residents cleaning, rebuilding – and most striking of all – smiling.

Nowhere was this “whistle-while-you-work” attitude more apparent than in the historic Downtown along Asbury Avenue. The flooding was

bad there, but those folks have done an incredible job getting ready for this summer. And we don’t mean to single out the Downtown. All over Ocean City there was true grit - no whining, just working. We’re so proud to be a part of this community. Just keep that in the back of your mind as you enjoy our lovely resort island this summer. It may seem nothing happened, but it took a great effort from many people to get it looking that way. So yes, there has been a silver lining to all this – businesses are refurbished and renovated; Merchants are more determined than ever to have a great season and the spirit that makes this America’s Greatest Family Resort shines bright. A friend of ours said to us the other day, “I’ve had enough of looking at the negative effects of the storm, it’s time to look at the positives.” Done. Inside you’ll find local business people’s take on the spirit of Ocean City after Sandy, and the amazing recovery efforts. You’ll also find gorgeous photos, fun events, cool stories and tons of places to eat, shop, stay and play. New this year is the Ocean City magazine Beach Guide on page 28, a must-have comprehensive guide to every beach on the island. Please visit the shops, restaurants, service businesses and activities you see on these pretty pages. Let them know you found them in this book. And take home some of that Ocean City spirit. Welcome to Ocean City!

HERE ARE A FEW MOMENTS IN LIFE WHEN you pause and realize, despite the difficulties you’re experiencing, just how lucky you are. Perhaps the entire island of Ocean City took a collective pause in early November 2012 as we realized, compared to other towns up north, how fortunate we were after Superstorm Sandy surged over. Most Downtown businesses needed repair and renovation, but they were still standing. Some island homes, likewise, needed repairs but remained strong and the Boardwalk, a tradition over a hundred years in the making, suffered minimal damage. We are lucky indeed. After all, Ocean City is beloved by generations of families who come to stay in her homes, frolic on her shores, and eat, shop, stay and play in her wonderful businesses. This past fall and winter, thousands of people made a huge effort to make this island ready for your stay and to ensure that when you cross over one of the four bridges onto the island, that familiar calm takes over and you get into that Ocean City state of mind. Ocean City is eight miles of well-kept beaches, the twoand-a-half mile Boardwalk, the Downtown shopping district, the inviting bay where you can play all day on the water, plus all the unique neighborhoods throughout the island. Families like yours from all over the country flock to Ocean City in the summer months to sit on her shore, look at her ocean, feel the warm breeze in their hair and most of all, relax and build memories together. Ocean City receives accolades just about every year for having one of the best beaches in America. It’s no surprise then that the city takes pride in keeping the beaches clean, safe and ready for your chairs and umbrellas and sand castles day after day. If you’re looking for a first-class vacation, Ocean City has everything – beaches, Boardwalk, okay we mentioned that, big-city shopping, outstanding dining options, a municipal airport, golf course, recreational fields, special events, family festivities... we’re talking endless possibilities here. Together with the gorgeous Community Center (housing the Arts Center, Historical Museum, Aquatic and Fitness Center, and Free Public Library), there’s the famed Music Pier (home of the Ocean City Pops), the Bayside Center and more. Whether you’re here for a day, the week, or perhaps the rest of your life, we’ve got plenty for you to do. Let’s start with some of the best beaches in the world – miles of soft clean sand from one end of the island to the other. Put on your explorer hat and take a beach walk. They are offered on Tuesdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer. See the events list on page 10. Guarding these beaches is the Ocean City Beach Patrol, one of the oldest and most respected in the country. Follow their instructions and remember to always SWIM NEAR A GUARD and listen for their whistle. Move inland a few feet and you’ll come across the Ocean

Photo by Stefanie Godfrey City Boardwalk, a two-and-a-half mile stretch lined with shops and restaurants of every kind, movie theatres, amusement rides, miniature golf courses and a water park like no other. Love shopping? Ocean City has what you need. Downtown Asbury Avenue from 6th to 11th Streets is a collection of boutiques, services, specialty stores and restaurants. OC merchants put their heart and soul into their businesses. And that makes for a top-notch retail experience year round all along a beautiful street lined with flowers and filled with smiling people. There are also a ton of special events in the Downtown during the year including Funtastic Tuesdays, holiday shopping days and a lot more. See page 66 for more info on the Downtown, between the beach and the bay on Asbury. Continuing toward the west is what the locals refer to simply as “the bay” – Peck Bay and the Great Egg Harbor Bay – where you’ll find every water sport imaginable, including kayaking, sailing, boating, fishing, crabbing, SUP, and more. See pristine eco-systems up close and personal. Aquatic and Fitness Center The Center is a multi-faceted facility that encourages people of all ages and fitness levels to participate in programs that promote good health. In other words, it’s a great place to workout. And it’s newly renovated! The Center has strength training and cardiovascular equipment; a 25-meter saltwater pool; a studio for aerobics, yoga, and pilates; racquetball; babysitting; and youth programming

spaces. Located in the Community Center; (609) 398-6900. Ocean City Historical Museum OCHM depicts early Ocean City’s history with period room displays and vintage clothing, a large display of old Ocean City photographs and postcards, dolls and toys. Displays of items from the city’s past will delight visitors. The Sindia Room features a scale model of Ocean City’s most famous shipwreck and a lighted eight-by-eight-foot stained glass window showing the Sindia under sail. Located in the Community Center; (609) 399-1801. The Ocean City Free Public Library The Ocean City Library strives to be the “intellectual, social and cultural heart of our community, providing a place to go for information, literacy and cultural resources, in a comfortable, attractive and convenient environment.” A tall order, but once you visit the library, you’ll understand the staff’s unending commitment to live up to this goal. Of course you can borrow books at the library, but there’s more than that. The library has movies to entertain you, newspapers to inform you, programs and workshops to enlighten you. And more. (609) 399-2434. Ocean City Municipal Golf Course Ocean City has a public, 12-hole, par three golf course. It’s set in the scenic meadows of the bay area, and is a great place to go in the morning before hitting the beach, after a beach day to unwind or as

a change of pace from the sand and sea. All ages are welcome, but children under 12 years old must be accompanied by a parent. To play, each person must have their own golf bag. Clubs are available for rental as well as hand carts and riding carts. Located at Bay Avenue at 26th Street. Summer hours are 6am to 7pm. Winter hours are 8am to 4pm. The golf course has a pro shop and memberships are available. Call (609) 399-1315. Ocean City Pops Every year, the Ocean City Pops brings internationally-renowned guest performers to the stage at the Music Pier. oceancitypops.com. Community Art Projects CAP keeps the island decorated in fun, lovely art work that comes up when you least expect it. During your vacay, see how many pieces of CAP’s work you can find. It’s dotted all over Ocean City thanks to a group of dedicated citizens. communityartprojects. com. Ocean City Theatre Company The OCTC works with the Ocean City Pops orchestra to put on wonderful fully-staged Broadwaystyle productions. Every summer there are three to five performances under the direction of Michael Hartman. is nothing better than sitting in a beach chair on a hot day in OC. Your feet get washed by the foamy waves and your time is spent watching visitors who have come to the shore to enjoy another summer in America’s Greatest Family Resort. On any given hot summer day, you’ll find an adorable family with little ones building sand castles together or a couple stepping along the coast holding hands, or a group of teenagers splashing water all around. Among all this fun, your gaze can’t help but pass those who are responsible for making Ocean City a safe, peaceful water paradise. The Ocean City Beach Patrol watches our children playing in the water; whistles at us if we go beyond the green flags; and rescues us in those ubiquitous wooden boats if we’ve gone too far. Said simply – their job is to save our lives. So, how does a common beach goer turn into that golden tanned rescuer? I joined up with a couple members of the OCBP to find out the answer. “I want to be a lifeguard,” I repeated in my mind again and again while marching down the Boardwalk to the 12th Street beach – the designated meeting place for the lifeguards who were going to instruct me on what it takes to be on beach patrol. Enter OCBP members Ross O’Neill, Mike Hinsley and Dan Casey. I was excited and nervous. My task for the day was to take the famous Ocean City Beach Patrol Rookie Test everyone who wants to sit in the wooden stand needs to pass. Being not the best swimmer, I felt unsure about jumping into the cold June ocean. But I had to save face and give it a try in order to get the inside scoop on the actual test. Plus, I had three experienced team members to show me the ropes. I always thought these guys and girls on the beach patrol had a dream job. Okay, I admit I was a little jealous: they have fit bodies, awesome tans, lots of fans. And all they have to do is just to sit in the stand with that whistle around their neck and, when necessary, move the boat from the upcoming tide. Right? Wrong. I realized I was mistaken once I saw what is really required by the guards. They work hard. The Rookie Test is one of the most prestigious and oldest annual competitions held on the island. It gives dozens of young girls and guys not only a chance to get a good summer job, but a lifeguard career. If you are over 16 years old and train at school, whether swimming, rowing, or running, you should be on top of the applicant list. In 2012, 63 rookies, fearless, physically strong girls and guys from around the area, took part in the

competition. The goal of the test is to determine the applicants’ various skills in swimming, running, boat handling, and other lifeguard techniques. And, frankly speaking, the test is not an easy one... but I didn’t figure that out until a wee bit later. When Ross, Mike and Dan first explained the five parts of the Rookie test, it didn’t seem that hard to accomplish. Here it is: a half mile run, a half mile swim in the ocean, rowing the boat, a surf dash (jumping over the waves in order to get into the water as fast as possible), and a personal interview. The physical testing of the candidates is usually held over a two-day period, but depending on the weather conditions, it can be extended. Like I mentioned, all these activities don’t seem hard until you see with your own eyes what the young rookies are going through, or until you jump in and do it yourself. The very moment I “jumped” into the water I thought I wouldn’t go any further. It was ice cold. But I closed my eyes and, accompanied by Dan, continued into the water as fast as possible not to feel the chill spreading all over my body. My destination was a lifeguard boat waiting for me a quarter mile off shore, but the real rookies had to swim a half mile out to reach a huge red ball and then swim back. By the time I touched the boat, the icy water clutched my chest. With every inhale it became harder and harder to make any moves. I took a couple of breaths, but my body was cold and exhausted. I had no more energy to swim, so I jumped into the boat with Dan and Mike to try to row back. Being a little over a hundred pounds, I could hardly even lift the oars, not even thinking about moving them. Instead of pulling in the same direction, my arms were going in the opposite. Mike took over the rowing and I enjoyed the rest of the voyage to shore sitting at the bow. It felt like a ride on a roller coaster when the boat floated over the waves... So now the question is how was I going to participate in the same test among athletes, who have been training for years to pass, when I couldn’t even row to shore? The answer is a resounding, “I’m not.” Even with some guidance from experienced lifeguards, I was just not up for the task. Truthfully, the run was probably the only part I could have achieved without prior training. Everyone competing in the run had to fit into 3.46 minute time, which is more than enough to save up some energy for the swim coming after. So here I was, a wannabe lifeguard who realized very quickly just how much physical strength it takes to qualify. The next day, instead of taking the rookie test, I watched the candidates as they competed. And I was still nervous.

It’s hard not to be concerned when you see rookie candidates dive into a wave and disappear behind the horizon for about 15 minutes. Despite the worry, it was breathtaking for me to watch the participants being in the water for so long and going so far into the depths of the ocean. That day the water wasn’t too calm, so their heads disappeared under the upcoming waves right away. Fortunately, the rowing part of the competition was held at one of the private decks on the bay where the water is still. The rookies, both guys and girls, surprised me with their skills handling the huge boat by themselves. The majority of the participants are experienced swimmers, runners or rowers at high schools and colleges from across the region. Most of them went through training at swimming and lifeguard camps prior to taking the Rookie Test. I met up with Danielle LaPergola, 17, who was taking her first test. In every aspect of it she turned out to be the first to go which added additional stress, but she coped with it well. Becoming a lifeguard was one of her life goals. “I do what I have to do, and I hope I do it well,” said Danielle. “Running through all the water was hard since I have a trouble running over it with my little legs. My toes were numb for a while.” Fred Cobelong, 16, swims and rows at St. Joseph’s Prep. He found the swim the hardest part as well. “The swim was very long. I didn’t expect that much competition. The water was actually not that bad, only 66 degrees. I’m a lifeguard at summer pools, and it would be great to make a step up,” he said. Being a lifeguard has become a family tradition for Colleen Kelly, 20, from ACCC. Her mother Kim McKay, 44, has been a life guard since Colleen was born. Kim decided to take the test with her daughter for support. “This is the first time I’m trying out,” said Colleen. “I could’ve been more prepared for the run. I’m a swimmer more than a runner. You have to run your own race, swim your own race. If you worry about other people like I did, you’re going to get a little nervous,” Colleen said. Out of the 63 participants only 26 became rookies, who spent the summer of 2012 on the beaches of Ocean City. They went a long way to be honored with the acceptance into the lifeguard community. But before they began their duty, they attended a mandatory rookie school to learn the special techniques and regulations each lifeguard has to follow. This summer, when you’re on the beach and you see the lifeguards patrolling the swimming areas, remember what they went through to get their job. Respect them and respect the ocean. In other words, listen for the whistle.

WAS CLIMBING OUT OF A CERTIFIED depression. Mussolini and Hitler had just shaken hands. It was August 11, 1938, a scorching hot day on the Ocean City boardwalk; hats were worn on heads and nylons on legs. It was the day William Shriver reopened the Strand. Its predecessor was a nickelodeon cinema built at the turn of the 20th century when movie houses handed out playbills to each patron and silent films were popular. Ancestor Strand was destroyed by fire in 1937, but not before it survived a fire that devoured a large portion of the Ocean City boardwalk in 1927. What does Shriver’s newly constructed cinema have to do with the formerly mentioned afflictions? Because one, most anyone, could escape the woes of the world, the country, the state, or one’s own business, by going to the cinema. SEEING A FILM WAS EVERY MAN’S ESCAPE PORTHOLE The new Strand was placed on divine real estate; it was built on the corner of 9th Street (the main artery of Ocean City) and the boardwalk, where it resides today, one address south of Shriver’s candy store, the oldest business on the boardwalk having opened in 1898. Prior to the construction of the new Strand, the corner of 9th Street and the boardwalk was home to an amusement and attraction of a revolving nature – a carousel. That vibrant corner went from one light-bulbed amusement ride to another. From horseback to cushioned seat, the new Strand even had a form of air conditioning, a luxury most people had not known. The inside of it was styled in art deco, the cutting edge decor of the time straight out of Europe, offering an ambience of luxury and glamour with favored movie stars peering from illuminated boxes lined up on the wall. It had one wonderfully spacious theater with 1,450 seats and a silk curtain adorned with King Neptune, the Roman God of the sea, protecting the screen until show time. Its premier showing was a Bob Hope movie called Give Me a Sailor with matinee tickets selling

for 30¢ (possibly the children’s price) and 40¢ while evening tickets sold at 30¢ and 50¢. One year later, in 1939, tickets were five cents cheaper for the showing of The Wizard of Oz. Since then, hundreds of blockbuster, or in this case – board-buster, movies would call this place home. And all those spectators who witnessed one projected within these aged walls know there is no place like home. Its sister theater, the Moorlyn, named for its throne (a road which remains paved today as the gateway to the Music Pier), was a seashell’s throw away; just one and a half boardwalk blocks north, opposing the Music Pier. It got its start as a bowling alley several hundred feet west of its current location. It was transformed into a movie theater in 1923 when tickets were as low as 15¢ for vaudeville acts and silent movies accompanied by live organ score. The Moorlyn underwent a transformation and a move: from alley to boardwalk, from casino to vaudeville and topped with a dancehall – the Casino Club Ballroom. The ballroom hosted its last dance by the 1940s and then the swinging ‘60s karate chopped the Moorlyn in two leaving it twinned until each twin was later twinned ,resulting in four theaters. The next major step in evolution for the Strand and the Moorlyn was in 1989 when both theaters were sold to the Frank family. King Neptune was overthrown and the Strand underwent a surgical pentasection and a lobby biopsy. But the cylinder box office topped with the round marquee, the shape reminiscent of the carousel that once stood there, was not asked to go and is still seen today. Much of the lobby was converted to stores moving the entrance to the theater from just behind the box office to halfway down the 9th Street ramp. When the Moorlyn was converted, the upstairs, where the dance hall and bandstand hosted vaudeville acts such as W.C. Fields, was made into apartments and later became storage for the ever after.

Even in the 1990s, there were telltale signs of the Moorlyn’s past. The lobby hosted a circular stairwell which led to the old balconies. The original projection booth was still present and vented out into the old ballroom and offered access to the roof which was a beloved treat on nights such as July 4. There is much screen history around these parts. This fine Jersey state of Newness, was host to the very first drive-in theater. And this fine city of ocean was once a host to many a theater; Faunces, the Hippodrome, the Uno (the first theater built for moving pictures in Ocean City), Village Theater at Doughty’s Pier and the Surf theater which was formerly the Showboat. Many of these were taken by fire storm. The Surf is still present but not accounted for as a theater – it is now a mall in theater skin and is still a coveted place to be for visitors. The Strand and the Moorlyn, well, these are the last standing. And though they may not aesthetically express the time in which they originated, they are historic. Fire, however, will not be the villain in their biography. DIGITAL KILLED THE SEASONAL THEATER My name is Kelly, and I speak for old movie houses. I would choose them over multiplexes on any occasion. I have a deep appreciation for the periodic scratches, the snap, crackle and pop of the soundtrack and the splicing of the film causing erratic jumps from one frame to another interrupting the intended chronology. Give me the dust marks sullying the perfect complexion of a star’s face and the regurgitated sounds of the projector. Technology upgrades have seemingly resulted in character downgrades. Who needs bright images and stateof-the-art sound? (She said coyly). The current blitz on these cinematic treasures leaves them no defense. The charge on the remaining theaters that use 35mm film is to go digital – requiring the purchasing of new computer systems, projection equipment and sound systems; a

total projection makeover that does not come cheap. They have no choice as 20th Century Fox vowed to phase out 35mm film (used since the early 1900s) all together by the end of 2013. The other major studios will likewise follow as it is cheaper for the studios as well as the distributors. The curtain will likely close on many historic seasonal theaters who cannot afford the expense of the transition to digital. Unlike multiplexes, these theaters show less screen and have less movies to offer and less time to offer them. This leaves them no power to go to battle as the date approaches which mandates a digital age with a price tag falling between $70,000 and $85,000 per screen. I know these Ocean City theaters on a personal level. I played a bit part in their lives during the later part of their middle ages – for nine years pausing only for a seventh inning stretch. I started in the box office when I was coming of age. I executed each transition with fantastic fervor. My enthusiasm was mostly from the view. My own money shot. Both the Strand box office and the Moorlyn’s offered waterfront property, the Atlantic Ocean of

loops had to be made and gates had to be closed. Of course there were film follies as the film could get wrapped and cause a brain freeze or there were times you would walk in to a miry tangle of film – oh the webs that were weaved! All worth the Thursday midnight screening of Friday’s opening movies. It was imperative to verify clean assembly (wink wink). Ingrid Bergman, the three-time Academy Award winner from the time of the new Strand’s conception once said, “No form of art goes beyond ordinary consciousness as film does, straight to our emotions, deep into the twilight of the soul.” These historic venues are not just where films have been shown. They are venues of first dates, first movies, hand-holding and strategic stretches where tears have been shed, horror inflicted, hearts moved, funny bones plucked, minds baffled (some even blown) and twilights of souls penetrated. And to have such things stirred with the backdrop of the boardwalk and ocean – I can think of no better escape. Gone are the days of silent films, nickelodeons, playbills, 15¢ tickets and single screen theaters. As film is today’s anachronism,

People in gowns, people uncloaked, people with bare feet, people with high heels, people with winter boots, people dressed like Underdog, regular people, repeat people, local people, famous people, people showing me old picture albums of the theaters from whence they worked, people giving me Heinz pickle pins (still marinating in my treasure box today), people asking me untheatrical information (no, sorry, I have not seen a guy this tall with jeans on) and on family night – people on stilts and wearing clown clothes. I had the best seat in the house. Until… I became an assistant manager. This new role kept me in the projection room and office for too long. The projection room (pay no attention to that man (or woman) behind the curtain!) had complex machinery with large stacked platters and appropriately named “brains” guiding the film from one platter to another. The projectors themselves had to be clean and well lubricated to accept and advance the film without scratching it. The film had to be thread through a maze, strategic

it will soon follow suit. Gone will be the days of assembling film. Gone will be the days of the imperfect format of 35mm film. Gone will be reel film. We bid you farewell, film. You have been good to us. We await your curtain call as your very own credits roll. To those cinemas that only project you, to the Moorlyn and the Strand, your fate is our very own cliffhanger.

HE spirit of community makes Ocean City the unique town that it is. My husband Frank and I were amazed at the coordination that was in place when we arrived just a few days after Sandy hit. St. Peter’s Methodist Church with its three meal a day food program was up and running. The Convention Center at 6th Street with the overwhelming supply of clothing and bags of food “for the taking” was staffed by so many caring people. The OCNJ C.A.R.E. program, utilizing resources from every area in town certainly helped everything to be coordinated in a very efficient manner. When I went to visit the Ocean City Tabernacle to see if help was needed in any way I learned that the resources they had there were being packed and shipped to Toms River. Ocean City had such an overflow of supplies and we were passing them on to other communities in need. It makes me proud to be an integral part of this wonderful town. It makes me proud to say that we are celebrating our 40th Year of “Fun in the Sun” at Osborne’s Inn. Time does fly when you are having fun. I REMEMBER EATING AT THE Chatterbox as a kid – don’t you? Go ahead, take your kids and let them start making their own Ocean City memories. CHEF DAVE RIHL’S HAWAIIAN cuisine – based on the 50th state’s plate lunch concept – is unique for Ocean City, but one bite of the homemade tropical vinaigrette or sweet huli sauce and you’ll know why Hula had to expand its operation a few years back. WHOEVER SAID HISTORY was boring? Well, not anyone involved with the Ocean City Historical Museum! The museum’s goal has always been to make local history fun, interesting and relevant. Whether you’re a native, a long-time resident or a day-tripper visiting Ocean City for the first time, you owe it to yourself to learn just a little about the history of this eight-mile barrier island off the coast of New Jersey. The museum has always been a work in progress, but today it’s a testament to the many volunteers who gave their time and resources to ensure that Ocean City’s vibrant history was easily accessible.
