We try to make it as easy and seamless as possible understanding it’s nice to occasionally page through an old-fashioned catalog as compared to the world now, where everything seems to be a click or a scroll! You’ll also notice each auction event has a little QR code which is a super convenient way to use your phone camera to take you to the actual auction page of that specific event on our website! There you’ll find every detail about every single item along with literally thousands of pictures. You’ll also find phone numbers for the right person at Steffes to answer any questions or even the owner to compare notes and learn about any item’s history. It’s easy and convenient.
This summer’s auction schedule will give buyers an opportunity to participate in the age-old tradition of auctions. Yes, the delivery has changed to more online but the method is still solid and true. We just don’t get to talk as fast these days! I think now more than ever the environment that auctions create and the true price discovery nature fits well in our ever-changing world. It seems there is more of a scarcity of equipment on both the ag and construction side and markets are staying much stronger than I think everyone was expecting so far this year. It’s a supply and demand equation along with the realization new keeps going up and affordability is what every savvy operator is after. Dealer activity at auction has slowed to a crawl since its peak of 2024. If you can find what you need at an auction it’s a green light to participate and bid as auctions are the purest cash, right here right now, place. There is always an opportunity for a bargain and the last time I checked you have to participate to be a part of the action and rewards. The same goes for land as the solid demand for ag land is showing it’s bellwether strength now more than ever as a place to invest and hold wealth both from a farmer perspective as well as an investor. I don’t see that changing.

TIGHT MARGINS, STEADY MARKETS, STRATEGIC DECISIONS
As producers move into the summer season the biggest issue facing agriculture is the pinch in profits. Spring planting across the Midwest has been favorable from a weather and timing point of view; However, the financial environment remains significantly tighter than recent years. For most farmers, 2026 will be defined by three priorities: protecting working capital, managing input costs, and making disciplined machinery and land investment decisions. Input costs this spring put the squeeze on margins with fertilizer and fuel leading in the unpredictable category.
EQUIPMENT MARKETS REMAIN SURPRISINGLY STABLE
The association of equipment manufacturers shows that tractor sales were down 11.3% year over year but combine sales were up 3.4%. Not a surprise considering the uptick in used tractor inventories on dealer lots. Many projected the used equipment prices this spring were going to decline sharply but as we saw through all of our auctions, that was not the case. High horsepower track tractors held their own. An interesting sale of a 2017 Case IH Quadtrac with only 505 actual hours on a single-owner retirement auction sold for $316,000. Overall, the spring equipment market was steady and uneventful in terms of change. One noticeable trend is the continued strength of well-maintained, pre-emissions tractors. Many buyers remain willing to pay premiums for dependability and lower-perceived repair complexity. These units continue to outperform auction expectations, especially among independent operators seeking value without the high replacement cost of new highly-technology-optioned equipment.
FARMLAND REMAINS A LONG-TERM ASSET
Although machinery often gets immediate attention, land remains the foundation of most farm balance sheets. Farm real estate values continue to show resilience in 2026, though appreciation has slowed. USDA data shows cropland values continue to edge up naturally, but not necessarily in every market. Rising borrowing costs are reducing speculative demand and forcing more disciplined underwriting by lenders.
STRATEGIC CAPITAL MANAGEMENT WILL MATTER MOST
The producers most likely to succeed this summer will not necessarily be those with the highest yields or the newest equipment lines. Instead, they will be the operations that manage capital carefully, monitor machinery opportunities strategically, and prioritize cash flow to preserve liquidity.

The first half of 2026 has shown remarkable strength across the construction equipment market across the United States and Canada. Despite ongoing conversations around interest rates, inflation, and broader economic uncertainty, the used equipment auction market has remained steady through the first half of the year. From our vantage point at Steffes Auctioneers, contractors and fleet owners continue to prioritize late-model, well-maintained equipment, especially from one-owner fleets with strong service histories. This supports strong participation levels and healthy pricing across many construction categories.
We are seeing strong demand in earthmoving equipment, support equipment, trucks, trailers, and specialized contractor assets. Contractors remain busy across infrastructure, road building, utility, energy, and site development projects throughout North America.
The transportation sector has also remained resilient. While some over-the-road categories have softened, we continue to see strong buyer demand for clean vocational trucks, construction-related transportation assets, and specialized trailers tied to construction and energy sectors.
That same focus on quality, reliability, and strong ownership history is also carrying into the Canadian agricultural equipment market.
The Canadian agricultural equipment market has carried strong momentum into the summer 2026, despite a slower start to the growing season earlier this year.
Heavy winter snowfall and cooler spring conditions created challenges in some regions, but producers have pushed forward, and overall confidence throughout the agricultural sector has remained very positive.
As crops begin to emerge and fields across Western Canada turn green, the used equipment market continues to show impressive strength. We are still seeing healthy buyer demand for quality late-model agricultural equipment including tractors, combines, air seeders, sprayers, grain handling systems, and support equipment. Well-maintained, one-owner equipment continues to perform especially well in the auction environment.
One of the biggest themes we continue to see this summer is the importance of reliability and efficiency. Producers remain focused on equipment that is ready to go to work when needed, especially during shorter operating windows. Buyers continue to be selective, but willing to compete aggressively for clean equipment with strong ownership and service histories.
Across both industries, one thing that has not changed is the importance of targeted marketing and timing when bringing equipment to market. Sellers benefit from working with auction professionals who understand how to position assets properly, tell the story behind the equipment, and connect directly with the right buyer base across both geographic and industry segments.
As we move into summer, the outlook across construction, transportation, energy-related sectors, and Canadian agriculture remains positive. At Steffes, we continue to see strong engagement from buyers across North America and remain optimistic about the opportunities ahead for both sellers and buyers in the used equipment marketplace.

SPRING STRENGTH, FALL OPPORTUNITIES
2026 is moving along quickly, and here in Iowa, the growing season is well underway. This spring looked a little different than years past, with planting spread out over a longer period due to frequent weather delays across much of the Midwest. While the conditions tested patience at times, we were fortunate to receive timely rains in many areas. As crops continue to emerge, fields across the countryside look strong and healthy.
Two questions I continue to hear regarding the farmland market are: “How did the spring market perform?” and “What can we expect this fall?”
Overall, the spring 2026 farmland market remained steady and resilient. One major factor supporting values was the limited supply of farms coming to market compared to previous years. With fewer available properties, buyers continued to compete for quality land, helping maintain strong prices throughout much of the region.
Another noticeable trend has been the increasing participation of investors and buyers outside the traditional agricultural industry. Part of this may stem from tighter margins within some farming operations as lower commodity prices have created pressure on cash flow and working capital. At the same time, many outside investors still view farmland as a stable long-term asset during uncertain economic periods.
As we look ahead to this fall, several factors could influence the direction of the market. Changing economic conditions will likely continue to shape buyer confidence and overall activity. Lower farm cash reserves, geopolitical uncertainty, interest rate pressure, and continued commodity price volatility could all impact the market moving forward.
My expectation is that we will see a healthy number of farms come to market this fall, potentially creating a very active sales season. If commodity prices improve and interest rates either stabilize or decline, that would provide strong momentum for the land market heading into the end of the year.
Through every market cycle, one thing has remained consistent - farmland continues to be viewed as a long-term investment. That philosophy has not changed. Farmland has historically proven to be one of the safest and most reliable assets over time.
We’re often asked, “When is the best time to buy a farm?” My answer is simple, “When the right farm becomes available.” If a property checks the boxes for your operation or investment goals, timing the market matters far less than securing the opportunity. After all, it’s hard to buy a farm that isn’t for sale.
