Change. The more experience I have and the older I get, I’ve come to realize it’s about the only thing we can count on. It doesn’t seem like we have any shortage of change in any subject or any geography in today’s world. At least that is what I feel and I’m sure many people reading this might agree with me.
Here at Steffes the biggest change we’ve seen in a long time is stepping across the border and discovering new friends and business partners in Canada. Doing business internationally has been a learning experience but one that reinforces my belief that good people are everywhere, especially in the farming and construction communities. It’s been a pleasure for all of us to learn from each other and reinforce the belief there really aren’t many differences when it comes to family, treating people right, working hard, and doing your best. Even though we’re a 65-year-old company, most people in Canada have never heard of us. We understand, so it’s up to us to “say what we do and do what we say” so the trust can be built just like we’ve done all these years in the U.S. Everyone at Steffes is committed to the proposition. It’s with humility and gratitude, we hope to build on
what got us down the road all these years and make sure we do our utmost best to do the right thing and build that trust that no one at Steffes will ever take for granted.
I also can’t forget our long-time customers. I know there are likely many of you reading this who went to our auctions as a child (just like me) and have been following us ever since. I’ll bet, heck, I know there are readers who have literally spent millions at our auctions! Our sellers thank you for the business as do I and hope we can continue to invite you to participate in our auctions wherever they may be. Even though we don’t often get the chance to have coffee or grab a brat or BBQ with you at the auctions anymore, rest assured we’re still the same like-minded people who want the auction experience at Steffes to be the very best. THE PULSE OF CANADA: NAVIGATING TRADE, TARIFFS, AND TRUMP
Canada is currently navigating a complex trade landscape with major partners like the United States and China. Following a recent federal election, the country is adjusting to new leadership, adding to the uncertainty faced by many businesses, particularly in the Western provinces.
Despite these challenges, Canada’s economy continues to grow. In 2024, the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased by 1.6 percent, driven by interest rate cuts that stimulated housing demand and infrastructure investments. Major projects such as the Trans Mountain Pipeline, Coastal Gas Link, and LNG Canada are either completed or nearing completion, enhancing Canada’s ability to deliver top-tier resources globally and boosting GDP.
The energy sector remains one of Canada’s strongest assets. The Canadian Association of Energy Contractors projects 6,604 wells will be drilled in Western Canada in 2025, a 7.3 percent increase from 2024. This reflects a robust demand for oil and gas
transportation and construction equipment. As the weather warms up, seeders roll out and calves are hitting the ground in the agriculture sector. Although declining commodity prices pose challenges, equipment demand remains strong, with early agriculture auctions exceeding sellers’ expectations. High-quality used equipment continues to bring above-average prices.
Looking ahead to 2025, decreasing interest rates are driving equipment sales across all sectors. Coupled with a strong U.S. dollar, this is attracting more buyers from the United States. Canada is poised to continue providing food, fertilizer, and fuel to the world.

THE POWER OF THE AUCTION PLATFORM
The 2025 crop year is taking shape against a backdrop of both economic challenges and advancing opportunities in agricultural technology. Input costs such as fertilizer, fuel, and labor remain elevated, a lingering effect of recent inflationary pressures. Meanwhile, commodity markets continue to show volatility for many reasons, the fact remains that farmers are facing tighter margins and are increasingly turning to a variety of risk management strategies to protect their operations and ensure long term sustainability.
In 2025, the farm equipment market is entering a period of adjustment shaped by ongoing economic pressures and evolving market dynamics. After years of sharp price increases - some rising by double-digit percentages annually, equipment costs are beginning to stabilize. The shift is driven by a combination of factors, including rising dealer inventories, softening commodity prices, and higher interest rates, all contributing to a more balanced market environment.
Auction activity for used equipment remains strong, fueled by an influx of latermodel equipment and competitive pricing. Across multiple states, farmers are noticing a trend: dealers are increasingly hesitant to accept trade-ins due to growing inventory levels and ongoing market uncertainty. As a result, more equipment is entering the auction marketplace, where demand remains solid and buyers are actively seeking value.

CONSTRUCTION UP, TRANSPORT ADJUSTING
With new administrations in both the U.S. & Canada it is fair to say that Q1 has been volatile to say the least, but the used construction equipment market has, for the most part come out unscathed if not arguably in a slight incline. The positive outlook comes from many different areas and with dealers projecting an increase in sales through 2025 we see the trend continuing. This growth is primarily driven by demand in infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, and utility developments. Across North America there is also a large push for renewable energy initiatives such as solar and wind farm constructions which we also see driving demand and pricing up on the core construction equipment e.g. dozers, excavators & loaders. Notably, large-ticket items like crushers, asphalt pavers, and motor graders are seeing increased activity, particularly among aggregate producers and paving contractors. Despite this optimism, challenges persist, including ongoing supply chain issues, which may affect the market dynamics in the coming months.
With the “Drill Baby Drill” announcement by the current U.S. administration, we are seeing a spike in the oil and gas specific equipment. The demand is influenced by perceived stability in market conditions with the outlook on U.S. oil to be very strong moving forward. Cranes, bed trucks, and winch trucks have seen the most significant increase thus far with oilfield specific trailers such as tank trailers and expandable trailers bringing up the rear while still increasing in price. Oilfield infrastructure investments throughout the US seem to be bolstering equipment needs which give a positive outlook moving forward. Global demand and the ability to import and export can always adjust optimism but the general outlook for the summer months is very good.
The transportation market seems to be hit the hardest post COVID with the downward slide on certain assets continuing. With a large onslaught of inventory hitting the market via dealer, private sale, and auction, overthe-road trucks, van trailer and step decks have taken the largest reduction with the future outlook being somewhat bleak. Certain asset categories have had literally thousands of assets coming up for sale within a six-month window which puts a major pinch on the smaller owner looking to sell one or two of the same assets. On the positive side the heavy haul trucks and trailers are holding their own with pricing being steady over the past six months. As inventory levels hopefully get back to some type of normality we hope to see a flattening in the volatility of the transportation market. All in all, the outlook for 2025 is a positive one with mostly optimism for the future.

From the northern prairies of Saskatchewan to the heart of the Corn Belt, interest in farmland remains strong. Even as stock markets swing and trade policies shift while the new administration stateside works its plan, land values have held steady with minor corrections in some neighborhoods. Whether it’s a local farmer looking to buy the quarter across the road or an outside investor stepping into agriculture for the first time, the appetite for land has been strong. The recent auctions we’ve handled have increased, with registrations and bidding surprisingly competitive given where commodity prices are. And that’s true from Northern Saskatchewan to Iowa. Bidder registration numbers have been excellent. Sure, most tracts of land aren’t bringing quite what they would have a year ago, but it’s dang close.
It’s a reminder of what many in agriculture already know. Land is a long game. It doesn’t crash overnight, and it doesn’t get reinvented by the next big thing in tech. It’s a hard asset with real utility. Something you can rent, work, and walk on. In uncertain times, it makes sense that more folks are turning to the ground beneath their feet.
