WE’VE COME A LONG WAY –AND SO HAVE OUR CATALOGS!
The change hasn’t happened overnight. It’s been unfolding over the past year, and this edition is one more step in that direction. This marks a shift from the days when desks and mailboxes were cluttered with stacks of auction bills. When was the last time you stood at the parts counter, a dealership, or the entrance to your favorite café or gas station, and you had to stand and rifle through all the auction bills hanging? Most of them have disappeared, haven’t they?
At Steffes, we want to give buyers all the information they need about our sellers and the items they’re offering up for bid, clear, complete, and easy to access. Whether it is real estate, construction, transportation, agriculture, or one of the many specialty auctions we take on, our approach remains the same.
Now, instead of sorting through piles of paper, you can simply flip through these pages. If a name, location, date, or item catches your eye, just pull out your phone, scan the QR code, and you’re taken straight to the full auction listing, complete with hundreds of photos. I couldn’t tell you exactly how it works, but it sure beats the old days of one
photo and a few words on a flyer or newspaper ad.
You might also notice the miles that separate the auctions in this catalog. We’re just about everywhere, or at least it feels that way, and so is the land and equipment we sell. The “death of distance” is something my dad used to talk about 50 years ago, back when driving a couple hundred miles for an auction was a big deal.
The perspective has certainly changed but the motive for us here at Steffes has not. That is to do whatever we can to deliver the utmost service, information, hard work, and professionalism to our clients and customers.
I hope you take some time to page through this latest edition. And remember, you can always pick up the phone and talk to the great people here at Steffes. That personal connection is still the best part of what we do, and I hope that never changes.

WHY CERTIFIED PRE-OWNED IS GAINING GROUND
Traveling on the back roads during summertime is my favorite, especially early in the mornings. Crops were planted in a timely fashion here in Minnesota and what is above water looks good. We all know that can surely change as summer progresses. Thankfully, summers are a busy time for families with gatherings, small town festivals, county fairs, camping, and more, which can take our minds off the challenges we face in crop farming. Commodities typically see seasonal lows through the second half of the growing season; we hope that high yields at harvest time can offset these lows.
Producers have experienced unprecedented price increases in new equipment and agricultural input expenses over the last couple of years. This has led to an increased interest in used equipment as budgets are tightened. One development that is on the rise is certified pre-owned (CPO) programs from major brands, offering low-hour machines with inspection warranties that command a premium over typical used equipment.
This is where our old saying at Steffes fits in, “Caring sellers make for caring buyers.” OEM inspection reports, along with maintenance history and details on how the equipment was used in the operation, have become ever more important to buyers trying to maximize the overall value.
Agriculture remains the cornerstone of the global economy, and its dynamics are evolving due to technological advancements, shifting marketing demands, and environmental pressures. With change comes the opportunity to reach new markets, rethink traditional practices, and improve farm data management to make informed decisions year-round.

HARVEST SEASON BRINGS A NEW MARKET PULSE
As we at Steffes gear up for the fall run and fall harvest season, it appears the market is reaching a new sense of stability. As much as we hate to keep bringing it up, the past few years have truly shown their colors as we unwind some of the craziest markets we have ever experienced. As we move beyond those years, we are starting to see the average business owner coming face to face with the pricing realities that we dealt with two to four years ago. Inventory and steel shortages caused some of the largest price increases in history, and now that the average contractor/farmer/trucking company is looking to get out of those machines and upgrade, they are coming to see that the market is a little different this fall. In the construction market we’ve begun to see some price corrections on machinery. Gone are the days of hoping for $100,000 on a loader and receiving $165,000. Buyers are not as willing to overspend on machinery as much as they did in past years. Rightfully so, inventory numbers are starting to regulate, if not show up on dealership lots. In prior years, finding a good, low-hour machine took forever, if not seemingly impossible. Now, as you drive by a dealer, there is a good chance that your machine could be sitting out front. Your local salesman may even know of one that will be available soon. Despite inventory levels, prices are still solid for good, used machinery at auction. Well-cared-for machinery will always bring a good dollar in the market. We just need to keep in mind that what was paid for a machine isn’t always what it’s worth now. Prices during the highest times in history don’t reflect today’s market value.
The trucking market is the place where we have seen the largest fall in prices. Over the last year, the over-the-road market has seen a significant decrease in prices. Freight numbers have been down from the past years, and many have resorted to parking trucks in storage facilities instead of taking them to the open market. A few larger trucking companies have closed or reduced their fleet, so used trucks are plentiful in the market today. As truck manufacturers continue to produce new trucks and trailers, the used market will continue to see a dip. I don’t think we have seen the bottom just yet, but I think we are close. With that in mind, there is a great opportunity to upgrade a fleet in the next year or two, so keep a sharp eye on the market!
The end of the year always holds some optimism. The first sign of cold weather gets contractors thinking about equipment moves to finish out the year. September and October always seem to bring about a flurry of excitement from that sector. Back-to-school shopping has always been a trend that gets the OTR market moving again. As always, a good crop and strong commodity prices truly move the needle for small-town, rural America. If the farmers have money to spend, the small towns will too!

LIMITED SUPPLY, STRONG DEMAND: THE 2025 FARMLAND LANDSCAPE
When we think about the current land market, the word that comes to mind is “change.” In the spring of 2025, we witnessed some of the lowest levels of farmland acres coming to market in the past three to five years. Despite this limited supply, selling prices remained strong as buyer demand continued to be steady and competitive. As we approach mid-year, there has been a noticeable slowdown in the number of farms hitting the market. This could be attributed to a combination of geopolitical factors, such as uncertainty surrounding tariffs, rising interest rates, and fluctuating commodity prices. Among the farms we’re watching closely are those of lower quality but with recreational appeal, properties featuring waterways and trees. These types of farms experienced some of the most significant value increases in recent years and may be the first to see price corrections.
Looking ahead to fall, there is a sense of optimism among farmland sellers. Much of the Midwest is reporting excellent crop conditions thanks to timely rains and ideal weather throughout the growing season. While we do expect more farmland to come to market this fall, the volume will likely still fall short of what we’ve encountered in recent years. However, it should be enough to support the idea that we are now in a more stable farmland market in 2025.

In the rolling prairies, where the horizon stretches endlessly, a new chapter for Steffes Auctioneers was quietly taking shape. Opportunities to help farmers transition into retirement kept coming, and we were fortunate to be in a position to answer. Steffes made its entry into Canada with me on the ground, followed shortly by the acquisition of Bruce Schapansky Auctioneers in Tisdale, Saskatchewan. Since then, the team has grown to around 20 staff and expanded into Manitoba.
In our first six months, we booked over 31 sales. As we listened to sellers, one thing became clear: there was a real desire for honest and transparent auctions, with no hidden fees and no broken promises. That is exactly what we aim to provide
On April 3, we conducted one of the largest live auctions in Arcola, SK. The feedback from both the seller and the buyers was incredibly positive. Not long after, we handled a large farmland auction in Biggar, SK, and once again, the process proved smooth and straightforward for the seller.
Then came a call from the industrial oil and gas sector. We were entrusted with the complete dispersal of an entire fleet of oilfield equipment and property in Lampman, SK.
Why do these sales matter? They show that Canadian sellers are embracing what Steffes has stood for over the past 65 years: trusted relationships, honest service, and outstanding results. Our philosophy is simple. If you take care of the customer at every step, the business will take care of itself.
We are excited to share that, in addition to our yard in Tisdale, we have completed an expansion yard located just east of Regina along Highway 1. With excellent visibility and easy access, even the largest equipment can be placed in the yard with ease.
