ItisagreatpleasuretowishaveryHappy150thBirthdaytothePrepSchool, andtowelcomeallofyou–pupils,parents,widerfamiliesandfriends–to ExhibitionDay2025.ExhibitionDaywasared-letterdayintheCollege’s calendarthroughoutthenineteenthandearlytwentiethcenturies Sadly,itlost itssparklethereafter,andbytheearlytwothousandshadbecomelittlemore thanjustaprizegivingceremony.OurwishtoresurrectExhibitionDayandto restoreittoitsformerglorywasfurtherfuelledbythedesire,post-Covid,to celebrate:tocelebrateeverythingwestandforasaschool;tocelebratethe closefriendshipwhichbindsustogetherasacommunity;tocelebratetheGodgiventalentsofourpupils,and,aboveall,tocelebratethejoywhichyour childrenbringtousall.

Whilstourmissionistoeducateandnurturemind,body,andspirit,thiscan onlybefulfilledwiththesupportandencouragementofyou-ourparents, grandparents,andwidercommunity.Ingatheringtogether,weareremindedof thepowerandpassionofourschoolfamily,andofthegreatprivilegethatwe shareinbeingunitedbehindacommoncommitmenttoourchildren.
Today,weareunitedinlove:loveforourchildren,loveforourcommunity,and loveforourschool.Thereismuchtoenjoythisafternoon,includingashort recitalbysomeofourPrepSchoolstudents,andwehopetherewillbe somethingforeveryone.Mysincerethanksgotoallthosewhohaveworkedso hardtobringthisdaytolife-MrUpton,DeputyHead,theFriends,andthe manyvolunteerswhohavemadeitpossible.Ilookforwardtoseeingyou throughouttheafternoon,andIchallengeyoutofindastrongerormore convivialcommunityanywhere

We’redelightedtohostthismuch-anticipatedfixtureonceagain,withbraggingrightsfirmlyontheline. Afteraspiritedcontestlastyear,thestudentsemergedvictorious-sothestaffaremoredeterminedthan evertolevelthescoreinthisyear’seditionwithsomenotabledebutantsonshow.
ThismatchcomesduringwhathasalreadybeenahugelysuccessfulseasonfortheCollege’scricket programme.WithbothourU13andU14teamsreachingthesemi-finalsoftheCountyCupatthetimeof writing,thefutureofcricketatStEdmund’sisbright!It’satestamenttothedepthoftalentamongour students-andachallengethestaffaretakingveryseriously!

AgroupofourElementsandRudimentspupilstravelledtoAmpleforthCollegefortwodaysofcricketat theannualWorsleyCup.Dayonesawacloselycontested30-overmatchagainstAmpleforth,witha maidenfiftyfromGregorCandatightfinishsecuredbystrongbowlingandfielding.Ondaytwo,theteam tookpartinthepairs-formatWorsleyCupcompetition,facingfiveotherschools.Theyputinaseriesof confidentperformances,includingsolidwinsoverAmpleforthandDurham Acomposedteameffortin thefinalsawthembeattheWorsleyCupSelectVIIItosecurethetrophy.Theboysplayedwithrealfocus, supportedoneanotherwell,andwereacredittotheCollegethroughout

ThisyearhasbeenavibrantandproactiveoneforboththeJazzBand, ledbyBenMcNiff,andtheRockBand,ledbyStuartPringle Rehearsing everyFriday,thegroupshavedevelopedanimpressiverepertoireof classicjazzandrockstandards,andtheircommitmenthasbeenevident inastringofsuccessfulperformancesthroughouttheyear Aparticular highlightwastheJazzBand’sacclaimedappearanceattheBuntingford LiveFestivalConcertinWestmill,wheretheyreceivedhighpraisefor theirenergyandmusicianship Theyalsoappearinschoolconcertsand entercompetitions
Learninganinstrumentisawonderfulachievementinitself,butbeing partofagroupbringssomethingevenmorespecial-thejoyofmaking musictogether Musichasauniquepowertobringpeopletogether,and centraltotheMusicDepartment’smantraistoofferawiderangeof opportunitiesforpupilstocollaborate,perform,andgrow.With rehearsalsthatarefun,supportive,andopentothewidercommunity, bothbandsfosterastrongsenseofcamaraderieandcreativity Next term,thebandsaresettoperformtheirfirstgiginHertford-anexciting stepforwardforthistalentedandhardworkinggroupofmusicians

Establishedin1916,theStEdmund’sCombinedCadetForce(CCF), isapopularandproudpartoftheCollegeexperience.
StudentscanjointheCCFfromGrammarupwardschoosing betweentheArmyorRAFsections.TheCorpsofDrums,whowill beperformingthisafternoon,isopentostudentsinRudimentsand above.
TheCCFprogrammeisdesignedtodevelopconfidence,teamwork, leadership,andpracticalskillslikefirstaidandmapreading.Senior cadetshelpinstructyoungermembers.Cadetsalsojoinweekend exercises,summercamps,andadventuroustrainingactivitiessuch asclimbing,flying,kayaking,andmore-bothoncampusandat UK/overseastrainingsites. TheCollegehasalsopartneredwith localschoolstoextendtheCCFexperienceandprovidefurther trainingopportunities. Wearealsoalwaysonthelookoutforadult volunteers-youdonothavetobeateacher!
