ENGLISH LITERATURE (OCR J352)
English Literature is assessed by two 2-hour papers: thefirst(01)examinesmodernandliteraryheritagetexts; thesecond(02)examinespoetryandShakespeare.
The aim is to develop comprehension, critical learning skills and the ability to compare; to analyse the effects of language, form and structure, and to write sustained analytical responses.
Eachpaperisworth50%oftheGCSE.
Paper01:
There are two sections, A and B In A, candidates write about one modern prose or drama text The focus is on exploring themes, character and setting and comparing an extract from the set text with an unseen extract of the same genre. In B, candidates respond to one 19th century novel, developing a response that links the text to its context, develops a critical viewpoint and uses evidence selectively in support of an argument
Paper02:
There are two sections, A and B. In preparation for A, candidates study 15 poems that share a common theme. The accent is on variety and wellknown poems are studied alongside others from different cultures. The three themes are Love and Relationships, Conflict and Youth and Age In B, candidates write analytically about a Shakespeare play They are examined on their understanding, critical evaluation and ability to link the drama to its context
Able, Gifted and Talented pupils are offered Masterclasses that take place after school to further enhance their progress towards study in the Sixth Form and beyond
