Living here at Ghost Creek has been a delightful and majestic experience. We wake to songbirds at first light, while enjoying a cup of coffee. We have a front-row seat, through floor-to-ceiling windows, to the daily performance of wildlife.
In early summer, we observe grazing dogs and pairs of fawns running and leaping as they play around the house. In winter, elk have slept under our bedroom window, only to scatter at our first movement.
There is a cacophony of noise at times… soaring raptor cries, trumpeting sand-hill cranes, chittering chipmunks, the returning flycatchers’ fledglings’ pips, neighing horses and bugling elk.
So many small inhabitants in our woods…marmots, snowshoe hare, pine martins. Foxes pounce in the lower meadow; I can see them as I wake. We also have had a pair of black bear cubs following mom as they examine our flower beds. We’ve tried to catch sight of the mountain lion family, reputed to live on Thorpe Mountain above us. We also have fisher cats and black tailed weasels in the woods.
The first summer after we arrived, a storm blew in. We heard the rustling of aspen trees and the boom of thunder. We lost count of the crackling lightning viewed across the valley toward the town. The aftermath was a sky filled with dramatic and colorful clouds.
We’ve learned the ins and outs of harrowing and growing hay. A favorite horse liked to snack beside us as we weeded flower gardens. We’ve enjoyed beautiful evenings with friends, barbecuing and lingering long after dinner to watch the lights in the distance. The northern lights were easy to see.
Winter is pristine and gorgeous. The fire table provides warmth and a place to roast marshmallows when our children visit. They love to sled down the drive, taking side trips alarmingly fast.
—WENDY
When we moved here we wanted to live in the mountains, not a city in the mountains.
With unobstructed views and vistas, sunrises in the AM and alpenglow in the evening. Wildlife to include deer, fox, hawks, eagles and grouse in our yard also enjoying the solitude. Elk by our house bugling in the fall in search of a partner.
Being able to reach downtown in 20 minutes via back roads to avoid traffic. Being on a gondola in under 30 minutes and viewing conditions and visibility firsthand from my bedroom. 10 minutes to early AM fishing on Stagecoach Reservoir before most of the campers have awakened. Mountain biking and snowshoeing out our front door.
In short, having the benefits of living in the mountains at our fingertips without the congestion and distractions of living in town. I skied 6070 days per year. Access to the slopes was quick and easy.
Ghost Creek Ranch is more than a house…it’s a part of local history and in the local historical registry. Stagecoaches carrying passengers to Steamboat and Clark would stop to change horses from the pasture and loafing shed to enjoy lunch.
Historic recording on monument at cabin below.
Ghost Creek Ranch is bordered by 270 acre private estate, and 400 + acres with no buildings placed in the nature conservancy above that. Beyond these properties is BLM acreage with no residences.
As I returned home one evening from fishing the evening hatch at the Stagecoach tailwaters (Gold Medal trout stream with the highest concentration of trout in Colorado according to Fish and Game) I couldn’t help but notice the blanket of stars above unimpaired by city lights.
It reminded me of the countless displays we’ve observed from our patio of northern lights, meteor showers, shooting stars and lunar eclipses.
In the winter, I’ve always enjoyed watching the groomers in their snow cats with headlights twinkling as they prepare the mountain for another winter’s day of activity. —BOB
