2020 VISION

NEW THIS SEASON AT STEAMBOAT SKI RESORT That just-out-of-the-wrapper gondola isn’t the only thing that’s shiny and new this year at Steamboat Ski

Resort, but let’s be honest; there’s nothing cooler than a brandnew gondola. It literally only happens once every 30 years, and on top of the fact that it’s as sleek as a sports car (not to mention that amazing shade of electric blue), it comes with a considerable number of upgrades from the old one. The new gondola might be front-page news, but there are a lot of shiny new things to get excited about this season: from an earlier Opening Day and a new focus on sustainability to even more Ikon benefits (as if that were even possible)! Let’s just say if hindsight is always 20/20, then the future is looking pretty sharp in 2020. “We continue to work with Alterra to ensure the future of Steamboat Ski Resort is strong, and the improvements at the resort for the upcoming winter are major steps towards big master plans,” said Rob Perlman, president and COO of Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation. “A new focus on sustainability programming led by our Director and the new gondola may be behind the scenes efforts, but the impacts of these improvements will certainly change the experience for skiers and riders at Steamboat.”

WALKING THE WALK: A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE Steamboat will soon join the ranks of ski resorts that lead the industry in sustainability practices with the help of new Sustainability Director Sarah Jones, who has been hired to oversee the resort’s sustainability programming and community engagement. “Jones brings nearly two decades of professional experience in sustainability and environmental programming to Steamboat Ski Resort,” says Loryn Duke, Communications Director for Steamboat Resort. “Sarah will be responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing all the resort’s sustainability programming and practices. She’ll also work on improving Steamboat’s operational environmental performance and helping to develop further resort policy goals on climate and energy.” To walk the walk, Steamboat Ski Resort has made a $500,000 founding donor contribution to the newly launched Yampa River Fund, the largest single cash donation in the resort’s history. “The Yampa River Fund is a water fund dedicated to identifying and funding activities that protect water supply, wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities provided by the Yampa River,” Duke says. “Even better, this contribution unlocked a one-to-one match, ultimately allowing the resort to provide access to $1 million for the health and prosperity of the community’s main water resource.”

MORE ON THAT NEW GONDOLA We know you probably have a million questions, so let’s talk details. The brand is none other than Doppelmayr. It has 38 percent more capacity and there are 12 more cabins, which translates to less wait time and shorter lines. It’s a newer, more advanced machine running at 6m per second versus the previous 5m per second. You probably never even realized there was a 9-inch step into gondola cabins, but now the tower setup is better, with level, walk-in cabins and new mats that will make it easier and faster to load. A new guest resolution center at the entrance and an expanded enclosed area for the que with RFID gates moved to the entrance of the building (versus closer to the gondola loading). At the top terminal at Thunderhead Lodge, the exit terminal got a little facelift by adding a timber gabled roof to match the main entrance to the building and better stairs. There’s your fodder for cocktail hour this holiday season. You’re welcome!

NIGHT SKIING JUST GOT IKONIC . Let’s be honest: who thought the Ikon Pass could get any better than it already is? In addition to having access to 41 destination ski resorts in North America, South America, New Zealand, Japan, and now Switzerland, Ikon Passholders now get to go night skiing at Steamboat! New this year, Full Ikon passholders receive unlimited access to night skiing and snowboarding during the winter season. Ikon Base passholders can either ski the same night as they used one of their days or use one of their days to ski or ride at night. This additional perk is best for guests arriving late in the day—there is no longer a need to wait until the next morning to get your on-mountain vacation started!

GET TUNED UP: NEW MONTANA TUNING MACHINE For the first time in more than a decade, Steamboat Ski Resort is bringing ski tuning in-house with the latest technology and machinery from industry leader Montana. Steamboat’s rental fleet will be top of the line with more frequent tunes and the waxing/tuning specifically designed for current conditions. Guests may also drop off their own equipment for tuning and waxing at Steamboat Sports—Gondola Square.

SKI YOUR PASS OFF! Bragging rights are part of the skiing and snowboarding experience and Steamboat continues to reward its most loyal powderhounds with the Ski Your Pass Off loyalty program. Adult Ikon passholders (ages 13 and up) are rewarded for the number of days they hit the mountain. When passholders log 10 days before the end of December 2019 they’ll earn a complimentary First Tracks ticket. From there, guests receive rewards at 10, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 140 days with an initial $10 dining voucher for the first 10 days and $20 dining vouchers at each remaining benchmark. Dining vouchers can be used at any Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation restaurant. Guests who ski all 144 days of the season receive additional recognition and rewards at an end of season celebration.

TOP 20 DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2020 A new year and a new decade bring significant shifts in some of the most conventional design principals. From unique kitchen layouts and a whole new generation of customizable appliances to the return of the color green (byebye at last, gray and white!). We caught up with two of Steamboat’s elite design professionals, architect Sarah Tiedeken O’Brien at Vertical Arts and interior designer Valerie Stafford from Rumor Designs, to discover the most cutting-edge trends—and some of what they told us might surprise you.

a rural location like Steamboat Springs where people do most of their shopping online, the luxury market demands something more unique, something you can’t get from the usual sources. “People are looking for unique, custom pieces that are going to be one-of-a-kind,” O’Brien says. “It could be something architectural, like a custom barn door or a furnishing like a dining table, but people want something that will stand out against mass internet shopping.”

LET THE OUTDOORS IN, AND VICE VERSA. It’s no surprise people want more outdoor living, especially

in a place like Steamboat. But what’s changing is the seamlessness

from indoor to outdoor and a level of comfort that goes beyond simple patio furniture. “A true outdoor room will be a cozy covered space that is furnished like a room you’d find inside,” O’Brien says. “These spaces are well-furnished—everything from built-in speakers and lighting to upholstered furniture, outdoor kitchens, fireplaces, and wet bars. These are spaces you can live in six months out of the year.” On the flip side, outdoor fabrics are also being used inside. “People live active lives—with dogs and kids coming in and out, durability and functionality are paramount,” Stafford says. “Luckily there are great fabrics on the market now that allow that durability while offering plush, soft looks that are also cozy and stylish.”

IT’S NOT YOUR GRANDMOTHER’S WALLPAPER.

Wall coverings continue to evolve and wallpaper in particular is making a huge comeback in interior design, but not in the way you might remember it. The modern version is being used in a variety of new ways. “There are big bold murals, striking patterns, or subtle textures like tweeds and felts that create a warm tactile look for the walls,” Stafford says. “Wallpaper has been totally reinvented.”

BACK IN BLACK. Our fascination with everything Mid-Century modern has apparently not petered out quite yet. “We’re seeing a lot of brass and black accents,” Stafford says. “The black steel look is being used primarily for stair railings and

window interiors or other architectural details, and brass (which is now called champagne bronze or white brass) is showing up on plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware as well as accents on furniture and lighting. It’s still going strong.

PILLOW TALK. The good news is you can update

These larger pillows not only make a statement and create a cleaner, more pared-down look (no more need for 50 throw pillows), but they’re also functional, ergonomic, and comfortable.

FOR THE LOVE OF BANQUETTE. It turns out people still want cozy, intimate spaces, even

in big houses. “A lot of times these dining rooms are so huge we’re

providing a secondary dining area that’s cozy for four people by creating a little booth,” O’Brien says. “These really cool built-in banquette areas are custom, so you can add really fun elements. Even in small condos

RETHINKING BREAKFAST BARS. For a long time, breakfast bars were built into

kitchens as an upper bar counter that concealed a lower countertop behind it, that later turned into one large center island with a breakfast bar built in. That’s all about to change. “We are now creating these different raised bar top configurations within the kitchen that allow people to sit around and converse rather than sit in a straight line,” O’Brien says. “We’re doing L-shapes or rectangles that are perpendicular to the kitchen so it’s more like a small table, and more accommodating for guests wanting to congregate in the kitchen.”

OPEN THE DOOR—AND THE WALL.

Walls that open like doors take indoor/outdoor living to the next level.

“This is an ongoing trend that is continuing to progress, but we are seeing it more and more. We’ll incorporate a full glass wall that will open up to provide direct access to the outdoors in summer and in winter it provides an even bigger view. The new systems are also getting much more energy efficient.” O’Brien says. These glass wall systems come in many different configurations, from accordion-style and massive pocket doors to sliders. Expensive? Yes. But when it comes to that million-dollar view, you get what you pay for.

LET THE LIGHT IN. “Most people want casual,

easy, breezy-feeling spaces that are

not moody or dark but more modern,” O’Brien says. Open living spaces that allow ample natural light and are bright and airy and not too stuffy are a trend that will continue in 2020.

IT’S EASY BEING GREEN.

After seeing a lot of blue over the last few years, green is

making a comeback. “We’re seeing green on everything from upholstery to cabinets,” O’Brien says. “It’s definitely the next wave of accent color.”

COOL YOUR HIDE. Let’s face it, animal hides will always be synonymous

with mountain design, a relic of the traditional cabin that gets reinvented over and over again. For 2020, the look is all about long hair hides from winter cows and sheep. “It’s an exaggerated tactile hide that’s less tailored, but more organic than the short hair hides,” Stafford says. “This is also a good example of the rustic/modern trend.”

SMOOTH AS GLASS THE 2020 STEAMBOAT SPRINGS WINTER CARNIVAL POSTER


When Steamboat artist Jennifer Baker was tapped to create this year’s Winter Carnival Poster, she was posed with a unique challenge: how to create a poster for the iconic event out of her preferred medium—glass While most people think of glasswork as sculptural, for Baker, it’s another layer of color, dimension, texture, or light. Inspired by the natural beauty she is surrounded by every day in the Yampa Valley, Baker’s works are suggestive of impressionism, but because of her unusual technique and application, it verges on something more modern. She does everything from landscapes to abstracts and comes in various forms including panels, wall mounted work, table top pieces and sculpture. When posed with the challenge to translate the Winter Carnival experience into glass, Baker jumped at the chance to create something special and completely unique. The result was a stunning, colorful piece in her signature style that also managed to achieve the graphic element the occasion demands. We caught up with Jen to talk about the experience of transforming poster to glass and vice versa.

The work I do in mindfulness is based on neuroscience.
