1 BIG THANK YOU! Hearing from people who benefitted from bursaries in the past and now wanted to help others reminded me of how important this job is. Seth
A convenient, simple but impactful job that helps you reconnect with people, your institution and gives you brilliant practice at people skills. Freya
Great experience for understanding how to better build rapports with people and create connections in professional fields. Going forward, I feel way more confident in talking to strangers and doing sales. Yasmin
Working at the telethon was really rewarding! I got to speak to a wide range of people, gain insights into the working world and potential internships and help secure financial support for future students at the school. Noah

We ran a very successful second Telethon, between 18 and 31 August 2026. A team of 15 bright and dedicated recent St Dunstan's leavers spent two weeks calling 3000 members of the Dunstonian community. The funds raised will go towards creating new bursaries for September 2027.

SPOTLIGHT ON LEGACIES The first ever £1m gift to the College From Dunstonian Alan Button (‘59) Alan Button was born on 8 August 1941 and attended the College in the 1950s (Griffiths House) before leaving in 1959. He is the first Dunstonian leaving £1m to the College. Director of Philanthropy, Isabelle BlakeJames, has met with Alan several times over the past 18 months at his home in Kent - which he shared until very recently with his late wife Jennifer - and she has always been struck by his humbleness. In his latest visit, Alan opened up about his journey: “I lived in Eltham and attended the local junior school. We lived in a prefab’ and my father was a postman. My father enrolled me for the exam at Eltham College but the fees there would have represented 50% of my father’s take home pay. Before I went for the exam at Eltham, I was also offered an interview at St Dunstan’s which
I attended. It turned out that my fees at the College were going to be covered entirely and I never forgot that. I was put in the A stream but in the first term I came out 29 out of 30. I then scraped into 2A and started working seriously hard after that. St Dunstan’s believed in me and taught me confidence. I credit my entire success in later life to St Dunstan’s, because with confidence, you can do anything: you can brush yourself off and start again if need be and you can win people over.
You think of education as being subjects, whereas in fact, education is life. I never thought I was very successful: I simply achieved things. You are only successful at the end when you look back."
Alan went on to incorporate several companies, giving his most successful one away to his employees as an EOT (Employee Ownership Trust), just like the John Lewis Partnership. Today, he hopes his gift will enable more students from the Lewisham community who would not otherwise be able to attend the College to receive the same transformational education he too received over 70 years ago. We are beyond grateful to Alan and hope his story will inspire other legacy gifts from Dunstonians, as these have become an integral part of building a secure future for the College, through the Bursary Endowment Fund. If you would like to discuss legacy pledging to the College, please email Isabelle Blake-James at: iblakejames@stdunstans.org.uk.
Please read pages 14 and 15 to find out more about the impact of legacies.

Bursaries are at the heart of this vision. Through bursaries we can open doors, broaden horizons and create life-changing opportunities for young people who might otherwise never have access to a St Dunstan’s education. It is also an acknowledged fact that having a diverse student body builds a richer, more vibrant school community, which all pupils benefit from.

CELEBRATING OUR BURSARY STUDENTS In September 2025, Dunstonian and long time supporter Nigel Higgins (’76), Group Chair of Barclays Bank Plc, hosted a Drinks Reception in Canary Wharf with over 200 guests comprising current and former bursary families as well as major donors such as himself. It was an incredible evening where philanthropy was palpable in every corner of the magnificent atrium. Natasha Andoh (’24) and 2025-26 Head of School, Emmanuel, delivered powerful speeches for the occasion. You can watch their impactful stories by using the following QR codes:

More recently, we hosted our annual Bursary Summer Tea Party in the College’s gardens (below), when Ms McLellan encouraged all current and former bursary holders and their parents to give back to the College. We have since set up several monthly Direct Debits and we are incredibly grateful to those families who have decided to support the College.

OUR BURSARY IMPACT: A PARENT’S PERSPECTIVE ‘Words cannot express how grateful we are for giving our daughter such opportunity. A great investment in her life, education and her future as she looks at studying Physics at Imperial College. Thank you all for believing in our daughter to be worthy of your sacrifices and generosity.’
‘Receiving the bursary has fundamentally transformed my son’s educational and career trajectory, supporting his progression into a highly competitive apprenticeship. Equally importantly, it has also created a powerful platform for self discovery and the realisation of his abilities, enabling him to step into his future with confidence, clarity, and a deepened sense of his own potential.’

Miss Dominic
‘ ‘Receiving a bursary from St Dunstan’s has been truly transformational for my daughter and for our family. We are incredibly grateful that she has been able to attend such a prestigious school, where she has flourished academically, personally, and socially. The support we have received has opened doors that may otherwise have been beyond our reach, and it has helped shape our daughter into a confident, capable young woman ready to take the next step in her journey. We remain deeply thankful to the donors whose generosity has made this life-changing opportunity possible.’ Miss Moore
‘Attending St Dunstan’s has created such ambition in our son, working alongside a group of energetic young people that have a range of interests has been formative in these last two years. This would have not been possible for us without the bursary, and the sports scholarship boosted this with a fantastic focus on football which has seen a consistent schedule of competitive games played around the South East. Thanks so much to all the committed staff (teaching and non teaching) that have made this experience so positive.’ Anonymous

THE RECORD SCHOLARSHIP TRUST Neil Record, who made his fortune in the city, has a debt to pay. When he was a boy growing up, his widowed mother was determined to send him to the best school she could find. That school was Magdalen College School in Oxford, where he won a scholarship that paid for his school fees. Neil is in no doubt that his mother’s drive and the chance to attend an academic school changed his life. He then went on to Oxford University and had great success in the world of finance.
the optimum their minds and talents at school, and to enter adulthood ready to share those gifts for the betterment of society.
Now he wants to give others the same chance that he had. Therefore, he decided to fund a new programme out of the Record Charitable Trust which he set up a few years ago to pay all or part of the fees for seven to twelve pupils each year at leading independent schools with the hope that, in time, Record Scholars will achieve success for themselves and their communities, and go on to support those around them.
Neil Record himself visited the College in March 2026 to meet St Dunstan’s Record Scholars.
The schools have been selected because of their commitment to bringing the very best out of able and enquiring children, and because they care about providing assistance and support to children from a wide range of backgrounds. The vision is for every Record Scholar to develop to
We are delighted to confirm that for the past three years, St Dunstan’s College has been selected as one of 14 schools throughout the United Kingdom to have been receiving two separate grants from the Record Scholarship Trust, for two extremely talented students in the Senior School.
‘The Record Scholarship Trust aims to make a difference - a tiny difference numerically, but of immense significance for every child and family it supports. In turn, we hope the education these boys and girls receive helps them to contribute to the UK and to the wider world around them. Perhaps in time, they, too, will feel a passion to help a cause that matters to them.’ Neil Record

SPOTLIGHT ON MUSIC We are beyond grateful to music lover and Dunstonian John Nightingale (’63) for his generous donation of a stunning Steinway Grand Pianoforte worth £100k, which now takes pride of place in the Great Hall. It is a remarkable instrument the College would never have been able to purchase and its impact has been immediate; so much so that Director of Music Mark Dowd is hoping to host the College’s first Piano recital during next academic year. As part of the Music Maestro Scheme which gives all Year 7 students the chance to learn a new instrument free of charge for half a term, we have been bowled over by the generosity of current and former parents coming forward and donating instrument to the scheme which will directly support our aspiring musicians.
‘This Year 7 Music Instrumental Scheme has an incredible impact on our Year 7 students, giving every child the opportunity to experience the joy, discipline and confidence that comes from learning a musical instrument. For some students, this may be their first chance to receive instrumental tuition, and the group setting helps them build friendships, teamwork and a sense of belonging as they begin life in our Senior School. By removing financial barriers and making instruments accessible, the scheme opens the door to long-term musical participation, helping students discover talents, develop resilience and creativity, and become part of the vibrant musical life of the school.’ Mark Dowd, Director of Music

OTHER BESPOKE CAMPAIGNS The David Norris Campaign David Norris was an English teacher at the College who had an immense impact on many Dustonians across several decades. He died in May 2025 and several Dunstonians have wanted to remember him through a suitable plaque which has been affixed outside the Great Hall in the new library hub created under the supervision of Ms McLellan, Head of Senior School. Thank you to Dunstonian Barry Isaacson for helping us create the plaque. The total raised was £3,350. David Norris
A new CCF Sash Several Dunstonians came together to fund a new Drum Major’s sash which is an important symbol of leadership, pride and tradition within the Corps of Drums. Thank you to John Brightwell, Roger Davenport, John Dohoo, Mike Foster, Sam Hibbs, Chris Hills, Malcolm Hubbard, David Jefferys, Anthony Skipper and John White for raising £2,200.

HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF MATCH FUNDING THROUGH YOUR PLACE OF WORK? We launched our first Match Funding Campaign in 2024 and we have since grown a cohort of committed parents who want to make a difference in their local community through offering opportunities to local young residents thanks to various outreach activities and partnerships the College is involved with.
“
How it works: If you donate £100 to St Dunstan’s Education Group Charity, we will receive a total of £225 made up of your donation, 25% of gift aid and a further £100 from your work place.
I knew that my company offered a charity match funding scheme but I’d never really considered that St Dunstan’s College could benefit from that. As it turns out, the entire process was straightforward, and the College provided all the necessary information required to complete the donation smoothly. My donation to the Catford Weekender was quadrupled thanks to my company’s generosity. Anonymous
