AT NOOITGEDACHT

A distinctive landmark in the Oranjezicht area, Nooitgedacht is St Cyprian’s School’s fourth home.

Bishop Robert Gray devoted himself ardently to the establishment of schools, starting Diocesan College (Bishops) in 1849 and St George’s Grammar in 1848. He was eager to start a girls school under the auspices of the Anglican Church and in 1871 opened the doors to St Cyprian’s School – comprising a room for 12 girls in The English Church House – at 61 Burg Street, the current site of The Argus Building.

In 1873, the school moved to buildings in New Street, now Queen Victoria Street, and present home to the High Court. In 1896, under the reins of the All Saints Sisters, St Cyprian’s School moved again to larger premises to accommodate growth. A new home was found in Annandale Street, a location that offered more rooms for lessons and an outdoor space for games and sport.

In 1914, the All Saints Sisters purchased Nooitgedacht and on 24 February 1919, a foundation stone was laid in preparation for what would lead to St Cyprian’s School as we know it today, a place steeped in learning and tradition, with a proud heritage and history and one of the most renowned schools in the country.

From the Principal A century of recorded history and a site for thousands of memories.

That is Nooitgedacht, home to St Cyprian’s School.

One hundred years of chronicled events and the place where thousands of groups of people have engaged in school activity in all its forms. This cohort has expressed their collective shared knowledge of the past, and in so doing, established their sense of unity and individuality through their experience. Without their recollections - from which The St Cyprian 2019 draws its inspiration these past reflections could fade away entirely. So, in this edition, we commemorate the memories documented for posterity and our pleasure, honouring their authors, for memories arise from conviction, shared by a community who believe that the moment recalled is both significant and informed by a values message. Their memories manifest that message.

St Cyprian’s School continues to sit proudly on the slope of Table Mountain, perched above the city.

She is a testament to all who devoted time and energy to her origin, impact and significance. As DH Thomson so eloquently and graciously described in his book, “Not for school but for Life”, so it was that ‘twenty three years after (Bishop Robert Gray’s) appointment, on a ship in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in 1847, the fortitude of a third-century martyr, the wisdom of a sixteenth-century educationist, and the foresight of the first Metropolitan of Southern Africa coalesced. On a return voyage to Cape Town, Bishop Gray outlined his policy for the establishment of a new seminary for ladies at the Cape: an aspiration he had held for many years and which came to fruition at Easter 1871.’

She is a special school, extremely similar to that ‘distinctive child’. She creeps into your heart and captures you (very much like a portion of her motto promises) for life! She absorbs you and exhorts you to aim high and try your utmost. She brings out your very best and sometimes reveals your limitations; she inspires you to push through them. St Cyprian’s School is my singular child. Born of vision, her parents, Sophy and Bishop Gray, conceived and fashioned her 148 years ago and she has grown and agitated with passion, her right to self-determine and to innovate her future. St Cyprian’s School has been ‘stewarded’ with wisdom, love and care by devoted leaders for almost 150 years. In crafting this magazine and examining St Cyprian’s history in our beautifully curated archives, her story never dulls or tires. St Cyprian’s School continues to inspire all who enter her impressive grounds and benefit from her extraordinary ways.

“St Cyprian’s School was the first school of its kind for girls in the Cape Peninsula. It was founded on the same lines as Diocesan College and St George’s Grammar School, which Bishop Gray had already established.

An old Cape Dutch-type house was secured in Burg Street, but within two years, bursting at the seams, the school moved to New Street (now Queen Victoria Street).

Sister Theodora arrived to take up the reins in the late 1880s and presided over the school in New Street until she declared the building too cramped and the gardens and playground inadequate. Funds were raised, a new site acquired, and in July 1896, the new school buildings in Annandale Road were opened. The rooms were large and light, a chapel was built, and the addition of a hall made more ambitious theatrical productions possible. Organised games, including cricket, were introduced and ankle-length skirts gave way to gym tunics. Meanwhile, academic work continued, and public examinations were passed.

Under the headship of Sister Hildegarde, it became obvious that the school buildings in Annandale Street, once considered so spacious, had become once again, entirely inadequate as numbers grew and the shaping of educational programmes evolved. She turned her eyes to the hills, to the spreading acres of what had once been a fruitful Oranjezicht farm, known as Nooitgedacht. Little remained of the house but the beautifully proportioned ‘Voorkamer’, for, like so many Cape Dutch farms, it had been almost entirely destroyed by fire. With the aid of personal donations and legacies, the property was bought for the school but, by then, war had broken out in Europe and building in Cape Town came to a standstill. Only in 1919, did work begin on the property and the school move to its new home.

Ten years after Sister Hildegarde left, Miss Frances Verinder arrived in South Africa and became the third headmistress of St Cyprian’s School.

While constantly aware of the tremendous debt of gratitude and affection which the school owed to the sisters and mindful of the school’s Christian foundations, Miss Verinder turned the eyes of her students outward towards the future and implanted in them a consciousness of their responsibilities as citizens in a world where the rights of women had at last been acknowledged. In 1939, the number of students had increased to over 200 and further accommodation was necessary to house them.

An extension fund was launched, and a new block of classrooms was opened. But, once more, war-time exigencies put paid to building plans and St Cyprian’s had to wait for peace to stretch its cramped limbs.

Meanwhile, although working with depleted staff, the school expanded yet further with the arrival of new pupils from every corner of the warravaged world.

The long-dreamed of swimming pool eventually opened in 1952 and Miss Verinder, much like her predecessors, was largely responsible for raising the funds which provided two new blocks of classrooms, dormitories and the splendid war-memorial organ in the chapel. “

Such is the nature of a school and its constant iteration and growth that facilities continue to be outgrown and over time, become outdated.

During the 1950s, 60s and 70s, further development occurred to meet the needs of a growing school, which outgrew proud new builds of prior decades. A new hall, additional tennis courts, junior classrooms (recently demolished to make way for the Multi-purpose Hall and Aquatic Centre), more specialist classrooms, particularly in ‘Pure Science’ at the matriculation level, which saw the provision of wellequipped laboratories – courtesy of Miss Carew - refurbishing of the swimming pool, and a never-complete list of needs and wants, have dominated St Cyprian’s School life for its entire existence.

From a handful of students in 1871, St Cyprian’s enters 2020 with 990 enrolled students. The physical location endures and the list of ‘needs’ appears quite similar to those of years gone by as one begins to appreciate that ‘the more things change, the more they stay the same’.

An exponential and almost radical growth in technology globally in the past decade, the courageous decision to follow the rigorous IEB assessment framework, the constant evaluation of the academic and extra-curricular offering, the deliberate and intentional implementation of the Transformation and Diversity strategy, the enormously successful implementation of the Long-term Athlete Development Model and subsequent tiers to grow sport and encourage excellence in sport, the pursuit of growth and distinction across The Arts, the integration of The Round Square Discovery Framework as part of our character development curriculum, and the understanding that each and every breakthrough during the entire journey knows no destination, leads us to the cusp of a new decade, which brings more opportunity and positions the school for further evolution.

The purchase of immovable property, the construction of new buildings, state-of-the-art sporting facilities, acquisition of school equipment, provision of scholarships and repayment of loans continue to be part of the paradigm of the journey as a school of excellence. As Frances Verinder so aptly wrote in 1953, “… it is well known that much of the most enduring education given by a school is found outside the classroom, and for this reason, the games field, Houses and voluntary societies are important.” She went on to write that “the buildings in which we live and work are a constant preoccupation of the minds of those responsible for the School. Each year, for a considerable time past, some important improvement or renovation has been undertaken...”

As a school that heads fearlessly and assuredly to its 150th year of existence, a school that assumes – with pride – the position of one of South Africa’s 20 oldest schools, and a school that continues to play an integral role in setting our young women on the Journey of Becoming in order to influence the future for the advancement of all, we turn again to Ms Verinder.

“Indeed, no apology is needed for an appeal to promote the welfare of St Cyprian’s School. And so, as each one of us in turn must hand on the torch to others, it will surely be with the prayer that God may bless and prosper our best-loved School in this land of great opportunity.”

1920-1929 ST CYPRIAN’S EVE, 1922: IMPRESSIONS OF A NEWCOMER “It was with feelings very much akin to those of dismay that I learnt on arriving at St Cyprian’s School on Friday, September 22nd that there was nothing to be done for nearly a fortnight.

Of course I had looked in the Church Calendar and discovered that St Cyprian’s Day was on the 26th, but this fact conveyed nothing to my mind. The first inkling I had that the great event of the year was to take place during my first week at School was on Sunday when the girl who was walking to Church with me, tentatively remarked, “I do hope you are going to be in tomorrow night as you won’t belong to St Cyprian’s for another year if you are not.”

Questions merely elicited something about a cake! The festival began for me when three of the girls arrived at the Cathedral with a wealth of arum lilies, such as in England we could not imagine – lilies and leaves in abundance – and all wild too.

In the afternoon, the girls – about 200 of them – and twelve little Kindergarten boys assembled in the Senior School, and there formed into line, the Head Girl first, with the two smallest boys holding her streamers, then the rest of the Kindergarten, Junior School and the Senior School. As this procession wended its way down the Avenue to the Cathedral, it made a most effective and fascinating picture, all white with splashes of pale blue. The Cathedral Service was most uplifting and inspiring, it ended with a procession in which the children were preceded by the Clergy and Choir.

At 6.30, we had tea, a joyous but noisy meal, pervaded by a spirit of good fellowship. Then, about twenty of us, those who had never before spent St Cyprian’s Eve at St Cyprian’s, underwent the rite by which we became St Cyprianites: we were each pushed backwards by Sister Hildegarde round a huge three-tiered cake. I do not like to say wedding cake, but that term would most aptly describe it.

Next came dancing in the ‘Gym’: a jazz band supplied some of the music. It was a remarkably good band and except for the pianist, supplied entirely by schoolgirl talent. Finally, there were some songs and a violin solo and at 9.15, we sang “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem.

Then followed what was to me the most amazing thing of the whole day, a service in the School Chapel. It was not the service that was amazing, but the fact that the whole atmosphere was so calm, recollected, and reverent – it was an effort to recall the hilarity of a quarter of an hour earlier.

And so, when bedtime came, I was more than glad that I had arrived in South Africa a fortnight too soon.

“Degrees were few and far between in the days when the only occupations open to women were teaching, nursing and missionary work. The ‘bookworms’ among the girls were soon won over by the clarity of mind of the tall, bespectacled Sister, who was always at hand to suggest a new book to read or a new avenue to explore. Furthermore, her knowledge of Mathematics seemed encyclopaedic. Those more athletically given and games-minded soon found a worthy adversary on the playing fields. While Sister Theodora sat on the sidelines and beamed with satisfaction at her girls, the new long-striding Head participated actively. A tennis ‘blue’ and an excellent hockey player, Sister Hildegarde thought nothing of hitching up her heavy skirt and dashing after the ball with a robustness expected of a sixth-form ‘tomboy’.”

Sister Hildegarde was succeeded by Miss Beatrix Darke who arrived from England on board the Edinburgh Castle, in January 1925.

“Beatrix Darke had been educated at Cheltenham College, renowned for its history of women leaders, before going up to St Hilda’s College, Oxford. She took a First Class Honours in History at London University, and later gained her M.A. degree. Miss Darke was no ‘slouch’ at games. She had played first team hockey and cricket at school, and had been awarded an Oxford ‘blue’ at tennis.”

IN SEPTEMBER, 1925, THE CAPE TIMES WROTE: “Eight tennis courts and a field for hockey and cricket, are to be found at the side of the school buildings.

The lovely shady grounds are full of wild flowers just now, and amid these beautiful surroundings, the present generation of St Cyprian’s girls should lead a very happy life.”

“What the correspondent in her aesthetic ruminations had failed to mention was the very vital factor that the tennis-courts owed their existence almost entirely to the indefatigable exertions of the Gymnastic Instructress, Miss Nellie Duschek, who had arrived in September 1922.” Miss Duschek built the courts with a team of convicts and “ the gang of convicts working on the new tennis courts near the Junior School, have been a source of much interest amongst the children, some of whom felt very sorry for the ‘conflicts’ and others who wondered whether ‘the conflicts stole and would be sent to the uniformity’.

Miss Duschek had control, perfect control, over her mind and her body. Miss Duschek on the rings; Miss Duschek perfectly poised with a foil in her hand. A Discriplinarian with a capital ‘D’. Miss Duschek was a mistress of all sport.

Miss Darke suggested to the Senior girls that the school should be divided in four houses in order to unite the seniors with the juniors, and the day scholars with the boarders. As it is so very difficult to find four names of people connected with the school, we chose North, South, East and West.

1930-1939 In the world of games, Miss Anderson showed that, although not a player herself, she appreciated what the members of staff were doing to encourage the discipline of team and competitive programmes. Miss Duschek in particular was singled out for many encomiums and private words of appreciation. The tennis practice wall and the levelling and raising of the hockey field ‘would have taken the hardworking Miss Duschek into the Union Cabinet’ had Miss Anderson had her way in 1933.

In all fairness to the mistress in charge of Sport and Physical Culture, it should be recorded that outside of her provision of these facilities, she and her colleagues were doing an excellent job in the coaching of their girls. St Cyprian’s were regarded as formidable opponents by their contemporaries.

In 1932, the Cricket XI, captained by M. McLeod, beat Rustenburg, Wynberg, Herschel and Springfield. The Tennis team defeated Rustenburg, Ellerslie and Loreto Convent. The Netball first team did not lose a game during the season, which was unfortunately cut short by rain, and the Hockey was outstanding. All school matches played by the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams resulted in victories for St Cyprian’s.

Cricket was the first game to be played at St Cyprian’s School. In 1901, Cricket was played twice a week on a large field with a proper pitch, which the school loaned. A brother of one of the girls regularly visited to show the girls how to play. Hockey was introduced in 1901 and Netball in 1910. Sister Theodora, who headed up the school between 1890 and 1910 was determined that her charges would enjoy physical recreational facilities. Typical of her determination, is this personal account of the introduction of tennis as a major sport at the (old) school in November 1900: “It has always been a great wish both of the girls and mine to have a Tennis Court; we have made several ineffectual attempts to secure some ground. At last I wrote to Mr Mellish, whose two daughters are day scholars, and asked if he could let us rent a piece of land from him; he wrote back asking me to come up and see him, and very kindly offered to let us have the use of a large piece for his lifetime, free of rent, if we cared to spend some money in putting it in order… It has cost us very nearly R300 to do the Tennis Court, and to clear the rest of the ground for the other children to use as a playground. It is a really splendid Court, full size and wired in all round by wire netting, 16ft high.”

By 1903, Tennis was a well-established sport. In 1924, tennis courts were built at the ‘new’ home of St Cyprian’s School, Nooitgedacht.

I have very affectionate memories of my time at St Cyps remembering well the kindergarten and playing in the sand tray generally making an unholy mess. I also remember playing John in ‘Peter Pan’, in which I doubled with the crocodile, in an outdoor performance on the lawn.

One of my arduous tasks as the crocodile was to go stealthily behind the pine trees on my knees, thereby incurring some painful wounds, releasing at the crucial moment the alarm clock which I carried in a pocket. It was my introduction to what was to be my vocation and I remember it with great nostalgia.

“Frances Verinder arrived as new principal in 1934, armed with a B.Sc. degree and a Teachers’ Diploma from London University. “My goodness me, did we have to put our heads down and work! Miss Verinder was a scientist and could see no reason why we should waste our time learning useless needlework, so instead, everyone in Standard Seven was taught electricity.

We learnt about magnets and iron fillings and how telephones worked and how to attach plugs to flexes and how to mend fuses.” Phillida Brooke Simons, 1932-1940 “It was during the anxious thirties that, in two successive years, we were privileged to have Lady Clarendon, then General and Mrs. Smuts, as our guests of honour on Speech Day, and ever after we knew that St Cyprian’s had a secure place in their friendship. It was in 1936, a year of great international tension, that General Smuts spoke to us and on that day, an unlooked for difficulty was having to deal with gate-crashers who tried to crowd into the hall in the mistaken belief that from the General’s speech, they would learn whether war was imminent.

But, to our delight, the great man talked only of his interest in the school and of the natural beauty of our surroundings, especially of his beloved Mountain. It was characteristic that, to the surprise of the ‘reception committee’, General and Mrs. Smuts came up the drive on foot, having parked the official car in Sophia Street to leave more room for others in the grounds; and that when we temporarily ‘lost’ Mrs. Smuts, she was found to have run down to put her bouquet in the car, given to her by the children.”

1940 - 1949 “

Then the world was at war, and of the six years that followed that fateful Sunday on which we listened to the dread news from London, it was not easy to write.

To the casual observer the school must have looked much as usual except for two things: the blackout, that must be watched with sure care, and the main airraid shelter that temporarily disfigured the ground floor of the new wing.

Only once, and that in the middle of the night, with sick children in the House, did sirens bring our own alarum into action, bringing half-asleep staff and boarders down to roll call in the shelters. Before long, the all-clear sent us thankfully back to bed and our curiosity as to the reason for the warning remained for ever unsatisfied.

Actually, of course, in those years of “The Breaking of Nations”, our corporate life was deeply affected in so many ways, and possibly no other six years in St Cyprian’s history had seen so much real education achieved. For a time, our walls housed a veritable little League of Nations. Already we had German and Japanese pupils and soon had the proud privilege of welcoming girls who came to us for shelter from England, Europe, the Mediterranean islands, the Middle and Far East, in fact from every direction except the South. From the friendship of these temporary pupils much was gained and Jugoslavia, Malaya and many another land emerged from the atlas and became real places whose people had interesting ways of life and ideas well worth the attention.

The shortage of almost all supplies challenged our ingenuity, and inventiveness.

Since life was shorn of most of its luxuries, we all learned to take delight in simple things, and great fun we had. Our own small doings gained greatly in significance. And there was the joy of being able to help. Forgetting for the time our own needs, all spare energies, and monies raised in many ways, were devoted to urgent war purposes. There was no lack of funds: the planes must be ‘sped’, victims of bombing and destitute refugees must be helped, and ‘Bundles for Britain’s Babies’ were packed in the Voorkamer. Then a special interest was our adopted little ship, H.M.M.L. 380. Before she left Table Bay, our privilege was to equip her with radio, gramophone, mosquito netting and other comforts. Then at Khor Kuwai in the Persian Gulf, and later, as she crept up and down the rivers of Burma on her perilous mission, we could follow her with crates of food and tobacco. When it was all over, two members of her crew held us spellbound with their account of her share in the Burma campaign.

All too often the wartime ether had been the bearer of heavy tidings, but none will ever forget that thrilling moment, at seven o’clock on the morning of the long-awaited D-Day, when all along the staff corridor bedside radios told out the news of the Normandy landings. Then, at long last, came V.E. Day and with it the Dean for our own glad service of thanksgiving and Te Deum in Chapel.

Surely the two-day holiday that followed was the most welcome that we had ever known.

Then, those post-war years which saw the fulfilment of many dreams. In dark war days, the Staff had cheered us all with a riotously gay variety show after

the manner of the ‘naughty nineties’. As a wonderful surprise, they used the proceeds of the entertainment to buy a gram-radio as a gift to their pupils and it was around this fine gift that, in the first January of peace, we listened to the historic Opening Session of the United Nations, assembled in London. In later days this radio gave us a share in other great international and national occasions.

For greater things we had to be content to wait, but parents and friends shared our conviction that only by going forward should we be worthy of trust and, from the first launching of the Extension Appeal in 1938, already in imagination we saw the enlarged games field, the new wing and the swimming pool, which were the immediate objectives of an ambitious scheme. Then, 1946, the first full year of peace, was no ordinary one in our history, for at Eastertide, we celebrated our 75th birthday and, to mark the occasion, launched a second, wider appeal for the Development Fund. Encouraged by a generous response, we now settled on the perfect site for the swimming pool, and, although the necessity for permits and such-like hindrances to enterprise made progress tantalisingly slow, by the time we were eighty years old, this dream had also come true.

1950 - 1959 “A very different kind of event, but unforgettable by those who saw it, was the great two-day fire of 1950. With the Mountain ablaze on three sides of us, it seemed little short of miraculous that our grounds and building escaped. Kind offers of help, should emergency accommodation become necessary, came from Bishopscourt, the Deanery and elsewhere. Parents arrived to stamp out burning embers as they fell into the field. But, rolled up in rugs and blankets and well supplied with refreshment, the boarders thoroughly enjoyed their night on the floor in the Voorkamer, library and common room, and perhaps it was only those in authority, whose part it was to keep watch for two nights, who felt any real anxiety.”

“Now and then in the history of the school comes a year which seems, in some special way, to be one of fulfilment, and this, I think, we may claim for our eightieth year so recently completed. For after many years of waiting and of enduring, with what patience we could muster, disappointment after disappointment and set-back after set-back, two of our dreams have come true: both the Chapel Organ and the Swimming Pool have materialised, coming out of the mists of speculation and wishful thinking to be firmly established as integral parts of our School.

It was just before Christmas that the organ was completely installed and put fully into commission. Professional organists who have tested it are unanimous in its praise, and it is true that we have an instrument, which, in beauty, exceeds our hopes. The first, and much appreciated, recital on the organ was given by Miss Phyllis Roberts, who, before leaving the Union, started the keen band of our own young budding organists on their lessons.

On the far end of the playing-field, four-square and firmly rooted in the earth, stands our Swimming Pool. The story of the choosing and rejection of various sites, of the making and scrapping of plans, and of the raising of funds, stretches far back into pre-war history, and after the war it was necessary to make almost a new start. But now, at long last, the Pool is really there, complete with changing-rooms and purifying plant.”

In 1936, a young Science teacher called Noël Barrow arrived from England to teach Science at St Cyprian’s School at the invitation of her school Science teacher, Frances Verinder. Noël met and married Frank Robb and they had five children. In those days, mothers stayed at home to bring up the children. Frances Verinder, in her address in the 1951 magazine commented, “Keeping down the number of our pupils and keeping up the full strength of our staff (is difficult). Of our losses in Staff, the very great majority are due to marriage, and I can think of no permissible plan for averting these recurrent catastrophes.”

As well as being a teacher, mother and wife, Noël Robb became a founder member of the Black Sash in 1955, an organisation of women formed in protest when the Nationalist Government packed the Senate to change the Constitution so that they could disenfranchise people of colour. She ran an Advice Office in Crossroads and became known as Mama Robb in Khayetlitsha. She assisted people with legal and bureaucratic matters. Noel became a distinguished liberation activist and a stalwart in the human rights movement in South Africa. She was a member of the Sash’s governing regional council for almost 40 years and was honoured as Honorary Life President of the Black Sash in 1989. Noel was elected to the St Cyprian’s School council in 1947 and she served on this body for thirty years lending her wisdom to the governance of the school. For many years she was a silent benefactor of the school and many girls have had their fees paid quietly and anonymously from the Robb Trust, when times have been hard. Noel passed away in January 2009 at the age of 96 and will always be remembered for her role towards the betterment of people around her and as a leader of marginalised South African women.

1960 - 1969 “In January 1960, St Cyprian’s took on a role entirely new. It acted as hostess for the first Summer School of Church Music ever to be held in South Africa.

The house, usually empty at that time of year, was full to capacity and music was always in the air. There were rehearsals in the Hall, services in the Chapel, and lectures in the Voorkamer. Every diocese in the Union was represented by organists, choristers, or both.

The growth of this interest in music is reflected in the achievements of the School Choir under Mrs Hansen. The Choir has made two long-playing records, and in 1968 a recording of Christmas Carols made by the SABC was broadcast by the BBC in six languages.

In 1961, Justine van Selm (Matric 1955) startled the male students by being the first woman from the University of Cape Town to take a first in Surgery, and Marianna McClean (1954) became the first woman to be awarded an Electrical Engineering degree at the University of the Witwatersrand. in the same year.”

“There are two contributions which Miss Carew made to the school which will remain inviolate. St Cyprian’s is one of the few girls’ schools in the country today which offers Pure Science at the matriculation level. This has only been made possible by the insistence of Miss Carew that well-equipped laboratories were essential if St Cyprian’s was to meet the challenge of a modern world where Science and Mathematics have temporarily displaced the Liberal Arts.”

SCIENCE CLUB “On Wednesday, 28 February 1968, Dr Marius Barnard spoke to us on heart transplants. Slides were shown demonstrating heart operations, diseases and the mechanism of the heart-lung machine. After this most amusing and interesting talk, Dr Barnard was invited to tea during which time he was bombarded with questions. While having tea, he invited the top five girls in Biology to attend an open-heart operation on a dog at Groote Schuur. After a while, he added that the bottom five girls were also invited as he knew what it was like to be bottom of the class, always being in this position himself, during his school career. This amused the girls, as well as Mrs Führ, very much.”

1970 - 1979

“To show a film or to use any audio-visual equipment was a major operation in the old days. One could use the Voorkamer where the audience sat on the floor. This was reasonably satisfactory provided that one remembered to black out the fanlight above the main door…

What a delight it is now with the acquisition of the Audio-Visual block. We are greatly indebted to all those who worked so hard to raise the money for this building to mark the school’s one hundredth year.”

The St Cyprian 1971 “The glorious day when we shall be able to use the NEW School Hall is soon to be a reality. Despite the wettest winter in 70 years, or so the meteorologists tell us, work has gone ahead on the building site, and it is now possible to gain some idea of the ‘shape of things to come’.

Constructive work of another nature has also gone on during the year and it is pleasing to record the inception of a Parents’ Association of St Cyprian’s School as the result of a meeting held at the School on 10th August last. As stated in the Constitution it is hoped that this Association will ‘promote better communication and involvement between parents and the School’.

It is perhaps in the sphere of attitudes, morals and conduct that there is now the most cause for concern. How can one instil right attitudes and values, uphold moral ethics in a world of Watergate and the Lockheed scandal; of the double-standard politics concerning Southern Africa – of our own injustices and inhumanity to man.”

1980 - 1989 “ In our richly varied community of South Africa there is a wide range of unique individuals, but we are all interdependent; we need each other and we need to understand and to be able to get on with each other so that our country

THE COMPUTER SCENE

“Memories are made of this,” says an old familiar song. For computers and maybe people as well, it could be changed to, “these are made of memories.”

Over recent years, the memory capacity of the computer has been its biggest selling point. Ask any whizz-kid in computers and he will tell you all about bytes bits, nibbles and the “K” factor (for the uninitiated, the “K” is equal to 1024 bytes, a byte consists of 8 bits and supports a single character, a nibble is half a byte – what else?) With such expanding memory capacity, more complex and sophisticated programs can be stored and hence the greater power of the computer. Everyone admires a person with a good memory, his ability to recall and inject wisdom in various problem situations: so too with the computer. How good it would be if we could improve our memories by eating a few “chips”!

Watch out! There is a computer about! No longer are they confined to the Computer Room: they have moved out and are taking over every corner of St Cyprian’s. From the Bursar’s Office to the Library, these strange and frightening objects are stalking the girls with their posters, projects and marksheets. They are even demanding money from some of them! And they are not static. They are beginning to breed. A new one, an IBM compatible, was born during the year and is doing amazing things in the Computer Room. It can even speak a new language called “Pascal” as well as “Basic” and “Logo”. It appears to breathe as well: just ask those who have risked turning it on.

1990 - 1999 DRIVER EDUCATION PROGRAMME Belinda Traverso and Odette Bruwer eagerly attended the Car Presentation Ceremony at the Drommedaris Hall, in the Good Hope Centre. From that moment onwards, there was no holding back. Our blue Citi Golf was a frequent visitor to our training ground, Green Point Stadium car park. Needless to say, we had some hilarious and horrendous episodes. To mention a few: Susan – avoiding a bird, but barely missing a trolley.

Marcella – caused a huge traffic jam at Glengariff Chemist, Sea Point.

Helen – was always on ‘the Molteno Hill Stall & Roll’ (I’m going to get a sticker saying “This car does not stall - it only pauses for thought!)

Tammy – slipping and sliding on sand near ‘Seagulls’.

Chantal – sailing through a red robot near Traffic Depot.

Jane – thinking she was in Spain and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Tara – mounting a pavement and not being able to get down again.

Pumla – reversing all over the place with head facing forwards.

Miss Plampin – with a permanent sore neck and worn-out feet (pushing against the front of footwell in vain).

On a more serious note, driving is a skill to be learnt. We have ups and down, but we must remember that it is a privilege and not a right.

AIDS AWARENESS An AIDS Awareness Group has been established at St Cyprian’s. Arising out of an inter-schools problem-solving bowl at the Teachers’ Centre in Mowbray, the group has arranged a play on AIDS to be given at School, visiting speakers, relevant videos and a display of posters and information which is updated weekly. In a letter to parents, the group stresses that, “only with knowledge of this disease will we be able to know the extent of its existence, recognise its problems and be able to protect ourselves and others.”

ARCHAEOLOGICAL RESOURCE CENTRE The present St Cyprian’s School stands on the site of the old farm Nooitgedacht, one of the original Table Valley farms which was granted to Johannes Ossenbuil in 1708. This is the first Table Valley farm to be excavated.

For many years we have been finding ceramic shards in the grounds of the school. A selection was identified for us by Dr Jane Klose, ceramics expert at UCT. Many of the pieces she identified were Chinese export porcelain dating from the early 18th century. It was on her advice that we looked into the possibility of conducting a dig on the school site. We approached Prof Martin Hall of UCT’s Archaeology Department.

Background documentary research had to be undertaken by staff member Gail Weldon and Liz Broekmann. With the help of old plans, maps, documents and photographs, we were able to identify the site of the old slave quarters, well and courtyard. The dig was supervised by Dr Yvonne Brink of UCT. UCT was mainly interested in our project, because of the educational value to our students. We were able to involve a wide range of girls in all the archaeological processes and they thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

2000 - 2010 “No-one who has any contact with St Cyprian’s School can say that they do not know about our architectural award-winning School-in-the-Woods.

Designed and built to the brief ‘it takes a village to grow a child’, it is the most wonderful space, tucked up at the top of the school campus. It is also part one of Phase One of the school’s Decennial Vision initiated in 2000. Phase One also saw the conversion of Belmont House (the previous home of the Pre-School) into the Belmont Music and Art Centre.

The school has been given a most generous grant of R1 million by the Nussbaum Foundation to enlarge the facilities at Belmont House to become a more viable community Music and Art Centre, the plans of which are about to be submitted with building hopefully starting in January 2006.”

CREATIVE CENTRE OPENING “Many confuse talent with creativity. Talent is to be nurtured and is a requirement for success in every field of endeavour. But true creativity needs something more – not least hard work and practice. Creativity is also about invention, discovery, understanding.

The creative act does not create something out of nothing; it uncovers, selects, re-shuffles, combines, synthesises already existing facts, ideas, faculties and skills. In other words, a lot of creativity is the result of finding new ways to put familiar things together. To do this, you need to step out of the mainstream and learn to think independently. But first you need to become immersed in the subject. When you get stuck you need to step back from the problem, take your time and become open to the unexpected. Arthur Koestler described creativity as an act of liberation – the defeat of habit by originality.

Another misconception is that creativity is only about artistic things. It applies to many fields, not just painting, design or drama. In this sense, creativity is the engine that pushes the boundaries of knowledge forward.

It applies as much to science and economics as to the arts.

But to teach the creative disciplines, takes a step further. It is about introducing developing minds to the potential of their own inventive talents in an appropriate physical and mental space. There is a surprising amount of ordered thinking and the diligent practice of innate abilities underlying the creative impulse and much of this needs to be learned and developed in a nurturing and collaborative environment – and I believe that is what this school is all about.

The Creating Future Leaders Project has encapsulated the journey towards becoming a newly relevant world school in Africa. It is about consolidation, concentrating on core values and the foundation subjects of the curriculum. As a girls’ school, the challenge to transform is particularly marked in the South African context. The role of women in our society is expanding exponentially and the opportunities for which girls need to be prepared have likewise mushroomed into many fields of endeavour.

What you see around you today is one example of how that challenge is being addressed at St Cyprian’s. What has happened here is not simply the repair and renovation of an older building. It is really an attempt to transform the learning experience entirely.”

THE STORY BEHIND HOW PIETERDIRK UYS BECAME OUR OFFICIAL HEAD BOY “My invitation to visit St Cyprian’s Girls School against the slopes of Table Mountain uncovered many little hooks in my past.

When my mother, Helga Bassel, arrived in Cape Town from Berlin in 1938, her first concern was to find a permanent job.

She eventually started at the music department of St Cyprian’s, teaching piano. To this day, there are still many women older than me who remember ‘Miss Bassel’.

Tessa Fairbairn, who is the exceptional principal of this great school, was at the University of Cape Town with me. She studied and read and worked and has become a major force in education. I didn’t study, scarcely read, and loafed, and yet, when we hugged after all these years, all we remembered was bunking phonetics and having sausage rolls in the Students Union.

The St Cyprian’s girls are involved with more than just studying and passing exams. They actively focus themselves on community. The girls were just as exciting as I hoped they’d be. We shared fears and hopes and plans to conquer the world and make it a better place. And then I met Nqoepsie. She had just turned 16 and was in Grade 11 and was actively involved in Wola Nani. She gave me an AIDS ribbon, an African brooch of coloured beads shaping the red symbol of care. She thanked me for my speech with flawless casual confidence. Although by then I had already met 300 000 young South Africans, there was something about this young woman – a sense of humour, an earnestness, and yet a maturity that matched my years! ‘I’m lucky,’ she said. ‘I have education. I have parental support. I’ve travelled. I’ve been blessed. I don’t have to be ashamed of that. I can use that to help others.’

When I went over to the Tricycle Theatre in London with my new one-man show Foreign AIDS for a six-week season in 2001, I took a few thousand AIDS ribbons to sell for Wola Nani. I told the audience: ‘Schoolgirls are doing what a government is failing to do. A sixteen-year old girl and her peers are showing that in a healthy democracy, the people can lead, and the government can follow. Nqoepsie has encouraged me to look and believe that in South Africa, we are not just dying, we’re also living.

Nqoepsie is now head girl of St Cyprian’s, and her first decree was to appoint me as head boy. I returned to do a session with parents about HIV/AIDS and how to confront fear, and afterwards, the new head girl asked me to accompany her to the Quad. ‘Just something I want to show you,’ she mumbled uncharacteristically. The Quad was lined with balconies and verandas and on them stood the whole school. I was inducted as head boy of St Cyprian’s by Nqoepsie. The girls made me feel like one of them! I told them about my extraordinary association with St Cyprian’s. ‘My mother came to Cape Town, having left her beautiful city of Berlin because of lethal racism.

Her first job here was at this school, as a piano teacher. Sixty years later, her son becomes head boy! This is one of the best days of my life!’

Elections & Erections – A memoir of Fear and Fun

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was a frequent visitor to St Cyprian’s School over three decades. As well as being a beloved guest, he was a fervent cheerleader and supporter of our school. From magical moments with the little ones in the Pre-Preparatory School to deeper discussions with older students, he charmed them all! He attended several functions and events, always engaging with everyone with whom he came into contact.

The ‘Arch’, aka the ‘Arch Fisherman’ for little ones who couldn’t quite master ‘Archbishop’ was regularly seen at the Pre-School – first at Belmont House and later, up in the Woods. He was also greeted quite strangely at times.

Prepping the children for a visit, Ms Fairbairn explained to the children that they were to greet him with the following: ‘Good morning your Grace’. Ms Fairbairn explained how ‘Grace’ rhymed so well with ‘face’. It was unsurprising when the little ones greeted – in practised, full voice: ‘Good morning your Face’. Oh well…

Another visit saw the Archbishop, resplendent in black cassock, jumping around like a kangaroo having just returned from a visit to Australia. The little ones often made him a birthday book, full of their pictures of him or whatever else caught their fancy at the time. He received these with gratitude and always sent a thank you letter to the Pre-School.

On a visit celebrating the ‘born-free’ generation in 2004, ten years after the country’s first free and fair democratic election, the Archbishop ran along the Chapel Walkway, hands aloft, high-fiving the girls lining the passage.

Whether addressing a larger cohort of St Cyprian’s students, or sitting in smaller groups, holding conversations that covered all sorts of topics, girls and all staff always felt the ‘Arch’s’ beneficence during each encounter. Hearts were lifted and smiles were permanent after an interlude with him.

The Archbishop was a guest of honour at SCS Spring Ball in 2014. He donated a signed copy of his recently published book, “Tutu: The Authorised Portrait“ by Alistair Sparks & Mpho A Tutu, for auction to raise funds for the school. He took absolute delight in the process of guests bidding for his donated item, cackling gleefully as the price continued to rise! He was very thrilled that his presence and contribution would benefit the school.

He has been an ardent supporter of Tessa Fairbairn and Sue Redelinghuys over the last 23 years. Inspiring and uplifting, the Archbishop often shared kind and heartfelt words with them, encouraging them on their journeys of leadership. He developed a closer relationship with the school when his two grand-daughters joined – one in the Preparatory and the older, the High School. Archbishop Tutu, his wife Leah, and daughter Mpho became part of the St Cyprian’s School family. Sue and her husband, Dave, were invited to the 60th wedding anniversary of the ‘Arch’ and his dear wife in 2015. A wonderful moment and testament to the remarkable relationship Archbishop Emeritus Tutu has had with our school.

2010 - 2019 MICROSOFT INNOVATIVE PROGRAMME 2011 Did you know that in 2011 two of our teachers, Mrs Kim Jackson and Ms Louise Clarke achieved first place in the Collaboration Category during the Microsoft Innovative Teacher Competition for the Africa and Middle East Region held in Jordan and went on to participate in a worldwide competition held in Washington DC. This after St Cyprian’s School became a Microsoft Innovative Mentor school that same year with a proven record of innovation, technology integration and successful change implementation.

FUN FACT Did you know that old girl Dr Laurine Platsky oversaw the Western Cape’s contribution to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in her position in the Premier’s Office as Deputy Director General? Laurine was also the first woman SRC President at UCT.

“St Cyprian’s is a jewel in our Anglican crown tutoring students who have consistently produced stellar performances academically. But they are not just book worms, as they have acquitted themselves splendidly on the sports field and in community work. St Cyprian’s produces splendid well-rounded learners of all races and has already, as an integrated school, had a head girl of colour who has excelled herself. I and many other Anglicans pride myself in being associated with an institution that is doing so scintillatingly well.”

DIVERSITY The CEO of the Desmond Tutu Peace Centre, Ms Nomfundo Walaza, gave the keynote address on St Cyprian’s Day 2011, in which she congratulated the girls, both present and past, for realising the dream of the founders of the school.

This dream speaks of encouraging young independent, innovative women from all races and traditions to pursue Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Accountability (RICA) – the undeniable and fundamental values on which our school is built - in all that they do at school and in the years to follow as they help to build this country into what God wants it to be.

MARELIZE DE KLERK Marelize de Klerk was chosen as the Umpires Manager for Field Hockey for the Rio 2016 Olympics. In 2017 she was made the International Hockey Federation World Panel Umpire Manager for outdoor hockey. During her career as an umpire, Marelize umpired 220 international games and 204 senior tests - the first female umpire to achieve this in the world. She umpired in three Olympic Games, three World Cups and seven championship trophies.

PROTEST AGAINST RAPE AND VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN Gr 10-12 girls took part in a silent protest vigil that took place on the steps of St George’s Cathedral in the aftermath of the brutal rape and murder of Anene Booysen.

SPORT ACHIEVEMENT Our sport achievements in 2013 bore witness to the success of our turn-around strategy, with the solid foundation laid by the Long-Term Athletic Development Model and the implementation of successful structures over the past few years effecting a transformation in our high school sport.

BALLET TO PRAGUE Eight of our advanced dancers toured to Prague for The New Prague Dance Festival, a week of workshops and performances. The girls competed against groups from all over the world, performing five complex and demanding ballets. They received four rock crystal trophies, including one for the best classical group.

DIOCESAN COLLEGE RHODES SCHOLARSHIP Ashley Pople (Matric 2010) is the first female recipient of Diocesan College Rhodes Scholarship since the inclusion of other schools in 2012. This highly prestigious scholarship is for post-graduate study at Oxford University.

Preparatory

As the Preparatory School formalises STEM in 2020 with the appointment of a specialised robotics and coding teacher, there have been various examples of innovation and exercising 21st century learning skills around the school.

This term, Grade 7 immersed themselves in a project where they used various Microsoft Tools – Teams, OneNote, Sway, Minecraft Education Edition, Flipgrid and Forms. As St Cyprian’s School has been a Microsoft School for several years, it is at the forefront of accessing innovative teaching and learning ‘Apps’. Bringing learning to life by using an array of digital tools is what really makes a learning experience authentic and interesting.

The focus of this project was in and of the Social Sciences. The girls spent the term investigating Slavery – embarking on a journey to understand the Transatlantic Slave Trade with particular attention to its history in the Cape and its influence on the diversity of the city we know today.

In addition to learning the content in the classroom, they went on a field trip to get firsthand experiences of the history of slavery, walking through the Company Gardens for observations, visiting the wash houses at the Platteklip Stream, and taking a guided tour of the Slave Lodge. Our girls collected resources during these field trips – photographs of buildings, maps and plans from museums and anecdotal accounts to recreate their firsthand experience of the concept of the “Slave Walk.”

The project’s objective was to challenge students to harness all the knowledge they had accrued through the classroom and field trip and to use it to create a Minecraft virtual world of the “Slave Walk”, thus bringing to life their experiences and showcasing their understanding of this section of the curriculum.

The project also included an investigation of St Cyprian’s School’s history in relation to slavery – the time when its current campus was in fact the Nooitgedacht Farm. Our students ventured into our very own archives where they discovered the very rich history that is connected to our school’s location. They learnt that Gorge Road, outside our walls, was the route walked by slaves carrying the slave owner’s washing to and from the wash houses at nearby Platteklip Stream. Oranjezicht City Farm, the produce of which was once used to replenish ships en route around the tip of Africa, the Company Gardens, and the Slave Lodge also featured strongly in some of the Minecraft worlds created by the girls.

The project was a collaborative group one that incorporated a focus on the Round Square Discoveries of communication, collaboration and teamwork. It created a fully immersive learning opportunity for the girls, and rich learning was the result. They had to solve problems, organise to meet regularly, and share their individual contributions to the group forum using Microsoft Teams. The teacher was able to monitor their progress and each student’s contribution to the whole and through One Note, was able to give them audio feedback in a more personal and interactive way. Post project, the girls completed a survey using the tool of Microsoft Forms. This enabled them to reflect on what they had produced, as well as share considered thoughts on how successfully their group had collaborated.

In setting this project, their teacher worked with innovative and supplementary teaching resources, which in turn prompted her inventiveness as an educator. It was an interesting and engaging experience for all involved!

High School

On the student front, 2019 has been productive and illuminating as we continued to build on processes introduced in recent years. Inevitably, there were highs and lows, but more importantly, both provided learning opportunities. We could decide how to respond during those low points and thus build on the progress made over the past few years. We embraced our portfolio as school leaders, acting as liaison between staff and students. It was a privilege to engage with various groups of our school community and facilitate effective communication.

This year, we debuted student voice assemblies, officially incorporating these into the school timetable. These assemblies were run by the student body and took place every two weeks on a Wednesday.

The aims are: to bring awareness to pressing global issues or topics; give students a voice while instilling a safe yet respectful free space to speak; and to break down negative stigmas that we may hold about certain topics due to misinformation, media, peer pressure and other societal influences.

The Student Voice Forum has encouraged these sometimes difficult conversations to flow across all levels in the High School - from Grade 12 through to Grade 8.

The gradual journey to learning, broadening our knowledge and gaining deeper understanding on a vast array of topics, has better equipped us to be more alert and cognizant of issues, so that by the time we leave school we are informed and able to engage thoughtfully with them. The experience of ‘Student Voice’ will stand us in good stead as we navigate relationships with our peer group beyond school, with deeper understanding, less judgement, and more compassion.

We have held assemblies that focused on: •

Sexual harassment and Rape Culture: We spoke about the pyramid of rape culture and how, when people tolerate certain behaviors, it leads to the extreme cases that so dominate our landscape. We discussed what is meant by the need to act and proceed sensitively in such discussions, with the knowledge that anyone around you could have been a victim or could be next! We were active in the ‘It’s Enough’ campaign - and through the hurt and anger, were very grateful for the safe harbour our school provided during the extraordinary emotional outpouring throughout the country and the activism it prompted.

LGBTQ+ Community: People may have a different gender identity or sexual orientation than what society considers the “norm”. As a group, we discussed the importance of extending respect to each other in our community and being supportive of each other for who we are.

Cultural Diversity: We discussed the different cultures represented in our school as well as what the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation is. Cultural appropriation is when someone or a group adopts elements of a particular culture that is not their own. Often, it causes offence to the minority or disadvantaged culture. However, cultural appreciation is when aspects of a culture are used to honour the culture i.e. on Africa Day.

Body Positivity: The assembly topic was to challenge our roles in ‘buying into’ or perpetuating what society construes as ‘beautiful’. We discouraged body-shaming of individuals who do not conform to what media and society convey as the ‘standard’. We encouraged everyone to love their bodies, and in turn to accept and respect every other body type in our community.

Mental Health: Students from all grades shared their stories and struggles with mental challenges and/or diagnosed illnesses. Their courage in telling their stories broke down barriers and took away the negative stigmas of mental illness. Letting students know that being vulnerable is not a weakness but in fact something brave - especially if it encourages other students who may be facing issues to seek help - was an encouraging message for all students.

As it was a very sensitive session, and typically Student Voice assemblies don’t include staff, we were grateful that Ms Hyman, our school psychologist was present and involved in the discussion.

White Privilege: We hosted Dan Corder earlier in the year.

He spoke to us about his documentary LUISTER, and the concept of ‘white privilege’.

Apartheid Personalised: Lukhanyo and Abigail Calata were our guests at Assembly. Lukhanyo shared the story of his father’s journey through the Apartheid years, his own personal experiences of that time. He and Abigail then went on to share their thoughts on the post-apartheid era we are all living in.

In August, we hosted a Schools United Leadership Summit in August to which we invited the heads and deputy head prefects of various schools. This was an opportunity for everyone to share their experiences of the year and discuss initiatives they were introducing at their schools.

Through this summit, we were able to share ideas with incoming leaders who we hope will progress this important event. We are optimistic that our initiative will create a wider network of Cape Town schools and expand the conversations between schools.

Loide Musweu and Leah Krige Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl 2019 The parent community was privileged to host Lovelyn Nwadeyi and Prof Jonathan Jansen during the year. Lovelyn talked about conscious and unconscious bias at a breakfast and Prof Jansen shared the importance of learning moral knowledge to meet the challenges of raising non-racist children.

This is an interesting aspect of self-knowledge from somebody who consistently and consciously chooses change over complacency, somebody who believes that possibility is only realized when boundaries are stretched and challenged, somebody who knows that change is the only constant in the world.

And yet when the implications hit home, nostalgia creeps in and a sense of loss takes root. I suppose it is human nature when sitting on the cusp of the unknown that one finds oneself wistfully reflecting on what one may have taken for granted. For me that is the incredible gift of the position I have held at this very special, historic and stunningly beautiful school, the wonderful people I have come to know through my association with it, the opportunities that I have had to learn and grow, the power I have had to impact and influence, and to see visions realized. The rose-tinted lenses of memory are real, and it is thus natural that impending loss is felt.

It has been such a great privilege to have served as Principal of St Cyprian’s School over the last 12 years! Even when I reflect beyond the rose-tinted lenses and remember the challenges faced, I am grateful, because they too have fed into who I have become.

The gift of my profession! It has brought passion and purpose to my life and a great deal of joy. What a rare privilege it is to work with young people every day, to get to know them at various stages of their development, to observe their growth and see their potential realized. What a privilege to have been in a position that has allowed me to encourage and excite them, to show them possibility, to shape their leadership, dedication and world view.

What an exceptional privilege to have real hope for the future, secure in the knowledge that the world will be a better place precisely because there are cohorts of our “girls in blue” who will become the influencers and the agents of positive change.

Leadership and Change St Cyprian’s is an extraordinary school with an extraordinary history, and it follows that in each phase of its development it has required extraordinary leadership – most particularly and acutely of course from inside that historic Principal’s office along the corridor from the Voorkamer.

Never was this more applicable than at the end of the first decade of the 21st century, and here began the transformative era of St Cyprian’s under Sue Redelinghuys. In 2008 she enthusiastically took on the formidable challenge of curating and nurturing the school’s tremendous and uniquely humanistic traditions, while simultaneously facing head-on the fundamentally changing social, political and economic realities.

Brave person, especially when one was not a generations-long St Cyprian’s School ‘insider’! The then-Council chose courageously and well, for while there were the inevitable strong headwinds that buffet the face of change, Sue’s dogged dedication as an educationalist of the highest order prevailed.

I had the privilege of serving as Chair of the Council for several years, while my daughter Luna (a true St Cyprian’s girl from School-in-the Woods days onwards) completed high school. My respect and admiration for Sue – and, indeed, our friendship – allowed us to form a strong team to confront the unprecedented challenges. We needed to be resilient in the extreme, or we would have simply ‘folded’.

There were agonising times, euphoric times, confusing times, but I look back with pride and gratitude that we and our excellent colleagues did not shy away from what had to be done on all levels. (On a personal note, having spent a lifetime as a political commentator and analyst both nationally and internationally, I came to understand and accept the adage that there is no politics as rough and tough as school politics.)

One cannot make a contribution of great magnitude without great personal sacrifice, and indeed this has been Sue’s lot. This is another reason why I send such sincere wishes to Sue and Dave to enjoy the post-St Cyprian’s period having truly earned their rest and their new adventures. It is difficult to transition from what has been your lifetime’s work and cause, but I admonish them to remember Nelson Mandela’s words: “When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace”. Of course, Madiba would have said this sentiment most certainly included exceptional women – like Sue Redelinghuys.

Shaun Johnson ex-Council

Dreaming Big I first met Sue and her husband David on a gloriously calm and sunny spring day on the St Cyprian’s School campus. As School Council members, we welcomed the good weather for the occasion as we were seeking to persuade her to uproot her family from their comfortable life in Johannesburg to become our new Principal. My role was to convey our vision for the transformation of the school property environment. We took care to describe the unique character of the school, that essential ‘sense of place’ that is so memorable. But we were very aware that much was dilapidated, outdated and outmoded.

Sue’s impressive academic and managerial reputation had preceded her from Johannesburg, and we were anxious to convey the message that St Cyprian’s School was moving forward. We also wanted to ensure that the envisaged changes would not detract from the values and traditions that define the heart of St Cyprian’s School.

Fortunately, Sue was persuaded to make the leap to Cape Town to start a new life, and in many ways, a new and transformed school.

It quickly became apparent that the academic programmes and operational management activities required Sue’s full attention. It was not long before, in her firm but quiet way, Sue leaned back against the ambitious property programmes we in Propcom were driving, not because she disagreed with them, but because she had a challenging academic programme to advance which required her full attention.

Neither side felt they could back off from fulfilling their mandates but Sue’s ability to articulate her management approach and direction struck a chord. The Propcom team realised we needed to interpret her line of thinking into the project briefs. What transpired led to a discovery that has united Sue’s academic vision with the physical and experiential realisation of the school. Together, we found a way to reconceptualise the spatial framework of the school that responded to the dynamic teaching philosophies that Sue and the teaching staff were implementing. Building programmes were described as ‘creating future leaders’, ‘girls in science’, ‘creative centres’ and ‘hubs for learning’ rather than merely

classrooms, labs and libraries. Information technology, backed by the Microsoft Innovative Schools programme, became a key factor to be accommodated.

It became evident in the early phases of the rebuilding programme that this collaborative approach was working.

The academic organisation of the school began to evolve in the new spaces that were being invented, and the school community at all levels became engaged in change. We had, quite literally, begun to build Sue’s vision for the school. It also became clear that change could be embraced without losing any of the school’s historic identity and character.

Sue is a multi-faceted leader who will have meant different things to the various members of the school community. From my perspective on Council, I came to see that although she began as a ‘reluctant’ builder, she has ended up as a visionary who has transformed the school. I have also seen that she is a strong leader and CEO with a firm handle on management who is quite prepared to stand and be counted on difficult issues.

In Council, she has been the wise Governor who inducts new members with patience and understanding. Many will know that Sue is a caring Principal whose every thought is for the girls in her charge, and the challenges for which she is preparing them in life.

But for me, Sue’s greatest attribute is that she is a deep and insightful thinker. She has total comprehension of the school and everything that goes on in it, but she also has wide experience in her field where she is acknowledged as a leading and respected professional. She takes this deep insight and propels it into policies that are founded on sound educational principles and human values.

She speaks often of the rate of change facing the girls as they prepare for life in the world, and her time at St Cyprian’s has, to a large extent, focussed on equipping the girls for this challenge, not only academically, but socially, emotionally and experientially. Sue has ensured that St Cyprian’s graduates become self-confident women who, on their own terms, will become leaders in the society of the future. To paraphrase the St Cyprian’s School motto, Sue has taught for life, in a way that embraces eternal change.

Sue has led the school into a new era of excellence and uniqueness, underpinned by the school’s Anglican ethos, the Round Square principles and the core values set out in the Constitution of our country. She has exercised her fiduciary duties with the highest integrity, strategic innovation, tenacity, courage, compassion, responsibility, sense of fairness, justice, transparency and accountability.

In a transitional period of extreme change and nearly insurmountable challenges she has developed an inclusive institutional culture, celebrated diversity, enhanced the school’s relevance in a changing, developing, highly fraught society and valued diverse viewpoints in entering into problem-solving solutions.

Due to her ethical and visionary leadership the school has transformed into a leading school of excellence at all levels.

As an academic institution the school has met and surpassed all expectations. Due to her dedicated and unapologetic support of IEB, St Cyprian’ girls have an added edge in the competitive world post school. The standards have been raised incrementally, whilst focusing on rigour and integrity. The students have developed into rounded citizens as members of the world, thinking analytically and probatively, leaders in their communities and within the broader global horizons. Academic development has been innovative, cutting edge, and excellent, yet with attention to inclusivity and nurturing, so that every student performs to the best of her specific ability.

The Arts have been a strong focus of hers and she has fearlessly and strategically developed music, art, design and drama at the school. With the assistance of dedicated, talented and supportive staff the Arts Department has blossomed into an innovative sophisticated diverse leader in Cape Town. The range of the offer is immense in its depth, talent and inclusivity and effectively develops and showcases the talented students of the school.

Before Sue’s advent to St Cyprians it had not featured as a sporting school. Now St Cyprians is a strongly

competitive sporting school with a flourishing sporting academy and representation at zonal, provincial and even national level.

The school has become a feared competitor in team events.

Sue initially had a monumental task to overcome the challenges the school faced when she was appointed. She played a major and definitive role in relentlessly transforming the school and its administration, in ordering its structures and making it a procedurally and legally compliant school with a sound financial base. She reviewed all contracts, amended and drafted new ones where necessary, drove the defining of the school’s vision and strategy, formulated policies, actively assisted in formulating new constitutions and documents, and generally worked tirelessly and continuously, in the process sacrificing herself, to enrich the institutional process and to reform and drive the school to its current status of excellence.

The beautiful grounds and improved facilities present another testimonial to Sue’s tireless energy. Together with the dedicated Property Committee, and often within limited budgets, they worked miracles to expand and improve the offer and provide spaces aesthetically pleasing and in the interests of the students and their needs.

She arrived to a community initially torn by strife and ravaged by disputes between various stakeholders and interest groups.

Sue accepted the challenge and proceeded to re- orient the community, building bridges between the various groups, managing stakeholders to form an inclusive homogenous, socially cohesive, yet diverse, school.

In Round Square she has played an international leadership role and St Cyprians is recognised in the organisation as a leading international school. The school co-presented an international Round Square Conference in Cape Town to international accolades. She has further developed and entrenched the principles of Round Square in the school and instilled a personal value compass in each student. This approach again has enhanced the value offer of the school, crossed boundaries and created successful leaders and compassionate students alive to societal responsibilities, fairness and justice.

St Cyprians girls under Sue’s leadership are equipped for life, proud of their history and instantly recognisable in the broader community.

Wings to fly When considering how it could ever be possible to capture the essence of Sue as an educator, and to do justice in a limited number of words to the extraordinary impact that she has had on St Cyprian’s School over the past 12 years, I decided to gather contributions from various colleagues across the school. As I listened to each of them, what struck me was the recurrence of similar themes that emerged, regardless of whether I was talking to the Heads of the Pre- and Prep Schools, or the Heads of Academics, Student Life, Sport, The Arts or Innovation and Technology. Comments such as ‘wings to fly’, ‘visionary leadership’, ‘wisdom and strength’, ‘supporter of innovative practices’, and ‘fiercely intelligent’ all formed the scaffolding of remarks describing Sue’s character and her contribution to each and every department and sphere of our school.

In addition to the symmetry of the hallmarks used to describe Sue, was the universal refrain from colleagues that she has focused particularly on their department or area of responsibility – convinced that she has given them the ‘lion’s share’ of her attention - and that their success can be attributed to both her extraordinary strategic vision and for her unwavering support for them in realising their ambition. The truth is that, in a way, they are all correct, as it is within the threads of each Head of Department’s perspective that the magical tapestry of a ‘global picture’ is manifested, for that is where Sue’s legacy to St Cyprian’s School lies. Every aspect of the school has benefited enormously from her focus, encouragement, inspiration, strength and determination to see them all reach for excellence, and succeed.

Whilst all referred to Sue’s incredible ability strategically to think beyond the here and now, they were also quick to point out that this same vision was underpinned by meticulous thought, planning and a capacity to create the required infrastructure. A co-active persuader, Sue was able to convince sceptics, inspiring them to her way of thinking before bringing them alongside, while managing the process in an encouraging manner.

Her cohorts are eager to illuminate Sue’s unwavering commitment to a holistic, values-based educational paradigm that commits to building character and academic knowledge and skills. She does not shy away from difficult choices when she believes that these are in the best interests of her ‘girls in blue’. Introducing IEB some years ago was not without pain, yet affirmation of Sue’s decision to proceed with this educational framework has witnessed support from girls who, now in university, regularly report back that their preparation for

the rigour of tertiary academics, as well as their acceptance at leading overseas institutions, far outweigh their dissatisfaction at the time of ‘doing’ a matric that, in their minds, extended them so much more. Four years into this system, St Cyprian’s School remains the only traditional, independent school in Cape Town to implement the IEB. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to call Sue our friend and confidant know her as someone who is unbelievably loyal, trustworthy, caring and generous of spirit. These special qualities, in addition to her thoughtfulness and attention to detail, have meant that on countless occasions over the years she has arrived at work with the perfect gift, or a carefully worded card that always seems to say precisely the right thing for the occasion. No matter what deadlines she may be facing, Sue has always been there to celebrate with us, as well as to provide support and a listening ear in times of trouble or heartache, and as such she holds each of us in her heart. On a deeply personal note, Sue has shown me how it is possible as a leader to be strong and fearless, and yet at the same time caring and compassionate, always to listen first and to be generous in one’s support, to balance carefully and skilfully the needs of the school with the needs of an individual, never to turn away a child no matter how busy one might be, and to ensure always that the priority remains to ‘do the right thing’ above ‘do the thing right’. Sue is a woman of the utmost principle and integrity, and we all owe her an enormous debt of gratitude for her passion, commitment and deep love for this school and all those associated with it.

Substance & significance We all know a strong woman or women whom we admire. Strong women are our mothers, sisters, friends, teachers, bosses, mentors, adventurers, explorers, activists and scientists. And then, we know women of significance and substance. They too are strong. In addition, they are noteworthy. They are worthy of our attention. At St Cyprian’s School, we have had 148 years of individual women who, through personal achievement and sacrifice, a commitment to service leadership, have made the most significant difference to so many young women who have passed through our doors.

Over the past six, 12, and 24 years, we have had the privilege of three such women on our campus.

Three ‘ordinary’ women, who through purpose, courage and tenacity, set themselves to work to make a difference. They have led by example. They have handled adversity and the obstacles that were thrown their way as eloquently as possible. They have used their minds, consciences, compassion and ability to reason to do the ‘right thing’.

They have not been afraid of what people might think of them. They have understood that, to be the best they can be and do the best they can, they would have to go through challenges, because they know intuitively, what doesn’t challenge you, doesn’t change you.

They have been willing to go against the flow. They have taken risks, not knowing what was on the other side of the door. They have taken advantage of opportunities, not being afraid of making mistakes. They have understood that making mistakes is part and parcel of the journey to getting it right.

They have exhibited grace. They have not seen themselves as more deserving than others. They have stood up for themselves and most importantly, they’ve respected themselves. They have shown, by example, to all their girls, the value of self-respect. They have looked out for others. They have lifted those around them.

Here’s to Sue, Jenn and Joyanne! Women of substance, women of power and positive influence.

Above all, they are women of meaning, who have made an extraordinary impact on St Cyprian’s School.

It is both luck and a true gift when one gets to experience a phase in one’s working life where the person one works most closely with is Jenn Wallace.

After 24 years at SCS, she has become as much a part of the fabric and narrative of the school as the buildings themselves!

Like them, she represents a gravitas, the physical embodiment of the sense of place, the icon that defines nearly a quarter century of history and growth.

Jenn started teaching at SCS immediately after qualifying. She was a passionate, engaged and engaging History and English teacher. She was THAT teacher - the benchmark for all others, the legendary one! She not only taught her students how to achieve excellent results through rigorous engagement with the subject matter and the skills of good writing, but also challenged

them to think beyond the curriculum, to use the knowledge they had acquired to develop their own insights, and to give those insights voice. Her mantra has always been that, ‘although everybody is entitled to an opinion, that opinion has no relevance or weight in the broader context, unless it is informed through research and well-structured argument.’ Jenn was the original innovative 21st century teacher before the concepts were even articulated in educational research.

An activist at heart with a passion for social justice, equity and fairness, she was well positioned to influence the students she taught. Critical thinking is her default, which when combined with creative problem solving, personal influence and excellent communication skills made her a powerhouse in the school! Many of her students have gone on to become

human rights lawyers or to study history, economics, political science or global studies. All have attributed their choices to her igniting a passion for robust debate, for looking at things differently, for knowing that through their work they can impact others and indeed the world.

But it was not only in the classroom that Jenn made an impact. She is a charismatic leader, an initiator and innovator – and an organiser of note. She is skilled at galvanising a group of people to action and she can create spirit and facilitate fun as easily as she can be serious and outcomes oriented. She has great initiative and a relentless energy to know more, do more and be more. Her journey through St Cyprian’s School reflects that she takes every opportunity that comes her way and, where there appear to be none, she creates them for herself.

As an adventurer and explorer in her own right, she embraced Round Square and was seminal in entrenching the IDEALS into the school. Having encountered service projects through Gordonstoun School in Scotland, she segued into accompanying and leading other Round Square International Service projects, became the Teacher in Charge of the Student Exchange and the Gap Programmes, accompanied students on Conferences and planned and facilitated barazas at our school to encourage meaningful, democratic discussion from the girls and staff. In 2017, her outstanding organisational and management skills behind the scenes contributed in no small way to our successful hosting of the Round Square International Conference – an experience many schools in the Round Square stable continue to refer to as one of the best they have attended. Through her involvement in Round Square, Jenn has travelled extensively and indeed took a year’s sabbatical to go on a teacher exchange to Peru, prior to visiting Round Square schools in the USA. Her passion for travel was entrenched and she continues to plan trips to places she has not yet explored, seeking out exposure to different cultures and different ways of being.

Jenn was appointed to the High School Management Team as Head of Student Affairs in 2009, where her positive impact was immediately felt. Her interest in and support of our girls is one of her greatest strengths, and she remains a port of call for many of them when they need quiet counsel or to share a particular joy. They know that she can be trusted to solve problems and give sound advice. They also know that should they have transgressed she will hold them to account -firmly, fairly and consistently – but also kindly!

It was a natural career step for her to be selected as Deputy Principal in 2011. Her influence across the whole school expanded and her contribution to entrenching our reputation as a school of excellence has been immense. Her strengths were showcased in the way she led the compliance requirements required of independent schools - Umalusi and IQAA. She became the “go-to” person for all other schools anxious about

the pending experience and was generous in sharing what she had learnt.

It was Jenn who took on the responsibility of rolling out and implementing BlueSky – the school’s Integrated Management Programme, and we are reaping the rewards of this in the many areas of school life.

It says much about Jenn’s own efficiency, her phenomenal work-rate and her self-discipline that she undertook and has completed a Masters Degree and is in the final stages of achieving a Doctorate while doing the job of Deputy Principal of a demanding school like ours.

Jenn is so much more than what she does and what she achieves. Her extrovert personality, combined with warmth and an authentic interest in and care for people, will be missed hugely. She is a connector, a gracious hostess, the manager in the background of any event quietly choreographing its success through her attention to detail. Whomever she engages in conversation is given her full attention and she has a remarkable ability to remember details of conversations long gone and enquire around people or events that were discussed. She can be seen happily “working the room”, representing the social glue that makes every event enjoyable and happy.

Jenn is a role model for our staff and students in terms of living a values-driven life. She has a strong moral compass and a well-developed sense of duty: at any one time you will find her mentoring staff or students, championing transformation or rightfully holding people to account.

One thing I have learnt about Jenn in the years we have worked together is that she is always moving forward. When she has mastered one challenge she doesn’t look back, only forward to the next one. In her trajectory at St Cyprian’s School, Jenn has mastered teaching, managing and leading and so the next logical step forward for her is to become a Principal of her own school. While we are sad to lose from our staff complement a woman-of-stature like Jenn, we know that it is time for her to spread her wings, explore new horizons and embrace new opportunities.

Wynberg Girls High School is very privileged to have Jenn as their new Principal from 2020.

Our heartfelt thanks for all that she has achieved here, as well as our very best wishes for happiness and fulfilment in the future will accompany her. To us she will always be “a girl in blue!”

“Mrs West is the best”! This is what our little girls in the Woods chant every time they see their beloved Head of the Woods. What an appropriate sentiment, what a declaration of their unfettered love for a very special lady who has had such an influence on the lives and development of at least two generations of girls who have journeyed through her school over the past 6 years.

There are so many reasons why they consider her the best!

They absolutely love her vibrancy, her sense of colour and style, her passion, energy, warmth, her gentle teasing and her serious consideration of all that they share with her. She is a mixture of best friend, second mother and “the boss”, and she easily flips from one role to the other without taking a breath. In a short space of time she will be found consoling a heartbroken child, cajoling a shy one lurking on the fringes, empowering an adventurous one

to dare! She is the person they are delighted to see every morning, the one that they bowl over with bear hugs around the knees.

Joyanne has brought so much to our beloved School in the Woods! A visionary and a creative spirit, she saw opportunity wherever it existed and very quickly improved the school through the development of playgrounds as well as formal learning spaces. She was instrumental in developing the fairy garden and the bicycle track and she extended and improved the existing playgrounds to create a stimulating and magical environment, a palette for imaginative play, sensory play, collaborative play and quiet reflection.

Passionate about Early Childhood Education, Joyanne is recognised as an expert in the field. Not only has she represented the ECD sector on the ISASA Council, but she has been instrumental in organising meetings and mini conferences for Heads and teachers in the Western Cape, intentionally and successfully raising the profile of the sector. A lifelong learner herself, she is always reading about or researching best practice in teaching and learning at this level and inspiring her team to do the same.

Together they have designed and implemented a unique, original and exciting curriculum – an extraordinary offer.

Joyanne is very well-loved by her staff! They describe her as “vivacious, bubbly, full of energy and drive and absolutely committed to ECD”. They talk of feeling inspired and uplifted by her, cared for and challenged to be innovative, creative and thoughtful in practice. They value her wonderful sense of humour, her hearty laugh and infectious enthusiasm, as well as the sense of fun she brings to everyday activities.

The parents of the Woods talk of her warmth, wisdom and kindness and the fact that the Woods is a welcoming space for them as well as their children. Her open-door policy, her compassion, insight and calm reassurance, as well as her sharing of her own experiences of parenting, have endeared her to many.

Joyanne believes in being involved with her students in a “hands on” way and so in addition to heading up the school, she took on some teaching herself. Her “micro-groups”, wherein she taught every student at the school in a small group context, focused on reinforcement of skills or extension of development in a personalised way. Furthermore, she became the self-appointed specialist Drama teacher at the school - bringing her personal musical and dramatic talents to impact on the confidence and emerging talents of her girls. Her strong and beautiful singing voice, her inherent musicality and ability to play many instruments and her talent in writing narratives and scripts that weave together song, drama and rhyme into magical performances are attributes unique to her!

On the personal level, I count myself as privileged to have worked with Joyanne for many years at two very different schools. She is a passionate educationist who shares a forward-thinking vision for education, an inspiring woman, a woman of stature and significance.

As an educator, Joyanne is a passionate advocate of the importance of developing the psycho-socialemotional skills of young children – these being as important as the academic, motor and creative skills development inherent in the ECD programme. To this end, she has created a safe, warm and welcoming environment within the school making it a space and place where her girls can explore and learn about relationships, about courage and resilience, about managing emotions and reactions – about sharing, caring and daring! The work that she and her team have done to facilitate transformation and diversity at the school has been nothing short of extraordinary in terms of curriculum review, raising consciousness, bringing in new resources and directing formal learning opportunities. The way she has brought the parents along on this journey too is admirable, and despite experiencing many challenges she has remained committed and resolute in her intention to forge forward and make a difference. I salute her for the work that has been done and for her continued advocacy of the ongoing change that needs to happen in our microcosm of privilege if we are to build a better South Africa for all.

I wish her well as she leaves us to take on the leadership of Bluebird Pre-Primary School in Gauteng. There is no doubt that she will be missed, but her legacy will live on in all that she has brought to the Woods in her time as its Head.

This year we are delighted, for the second year in a row, to recognise Jessica Green as the recipient of this award.

Alice Gwynne-Evans SPIRIT OF SPORT AWARD The Spirit of Sport Award, also affectionately called the “Players’ Player Award”, is voted for by all Grade12 students who represented our school on the sport fields throughout their high school careers.

The criteria for this award are that the recipient, in her time as a St Cyprian’s School sportswoman: always showed respect for all match officials and players, including her teammates and opponents; consistently portrayed good sportsmanship qualities both on and off the field, playing fairly and in a positive manner and acting as a good ambassador of our school; was a team player and showed encouragement to her fellow players; and demonstrated a great attitude towards the sport, the competition and its supporters, regardless of whether she was the most skillful player on the field or not.

CULTURAL AWARDS Stephanie Harrison SPIRIT OF THE ARTS AWARD The Spirit of The Arts award is given to the student who is considered by the Music, Art, Design and Drama staff to have supported and promoted all Arts disciplines throughout the year, and inspired others to follow her lead. In her role as ‘Head of Culture’, this student has introduced and supported a number of key initiatives, including the formation of the Arts Week, the Arts Civvies

Day (which raised funds for a number of Arts charities), Pro Arte Colours and the ‘Open Mic’ session in the Fish Pond Quad.

SPIRIT AWARDS ASSOCIATED WITH ROUND SQUARE Chloe Goodwin SPIRIT OF INTERNATIONALISM AWARD This award goes to the student who, over a number of years, has actively cultivated a global mindset and worked hard to develop global competencies in pursuit of personal growth.

She has engaged in a variety of Round Square opportunities, inspired by the possibility of engaging with people from across the world and determined to make a difference in whatever way she could. In her leadership role, she has been exceptional in bringing together and working with her portfolio members to implement initiatives and was always prepared to be involved as a participant in the activities run by her teams.

As Head of Round Square this year, she deserves this award for her leadership.

Khanyisile Mafeje SPIRIT OF DEMOCRACY AWARD This award is presented to a student who embodies the spirit of Ubuntu. Her gentle approach to people is characterised by a genuine respect, interest and empathy.

And yet at the same time she has exhibited an impressive strength of character. In everything that she did, she showed herself to be a responsible, committed and diligent leader. She always led by example in the execution of her duties as the Head of the iGugu Lethu Society. She has gained the deep respect of both peers and staff alike.

These students have led the Environmental Club with passion and dedication. They have often come up with new ideas and have led by example within the club. This award is well-deserved by the Heads of Environment.

Lucy Chesterton Chloe Goodwin Sylvie Gorille Jessica Green Anna Roux SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE AWARD The Spirit of Adventure Award is presented to the recipients who fulfilled the criteria of the gold medal President’s Award.

This is an internationally recognised award, with Gold being the highest level. It requires the girls to complete 72 hours of service over a 12 month period, a minimum of

a 12-month commitment to developing a new skill and participating in a sporting activity, a five-day residential project in a community of their choice, as well as a four-day, 70 km adventurous journey.

For the first time in St Cyprian School’s history, five matric students - Lucy Chesterton, Chloe Goodwin, Sylvie Gorille, Jessica Green and Anna Roux - have worked very hard to complete the rigorous requirements of this award over her High School years a remarkable achievement.

Alice Gwynne-Evans SPIRIT OF LEADERSHIP AWARD The recipient of this award has been an authentic, committed, exceptionally hard-working and engaged leader in her pursuit of excellence. As a wonderful role model of our school’s core values of respect, integrity, compassion and accountability, she has led by example in everything that she has done and has gained the implicit trust of students and staff alike. She has displayed selflessness in her commitment to each and every school activity, and especially in her role as Head of Sport. Her calm and unassuming style of leadership has served as an inspiration to many.

Jessica Barton SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARD This award is presented to two students this year, in recognition of their contribution to the Community Partnership programme.

Throughout her High School years, this student has participated in a variety of Community Partnership activities, ranging from weekly engagements to supporting various campaigns. She brought commitment and compassion to the role that she played by performing her duties with care, diligence and consistency. She led the popular In-House Community Club each week with positivity and creativity, reliably giving of her best and encouraging the other members to do so too. As the Head of the Community Partnership Programme, she fully deserves to be recognised for her commitment and valuable efforts.

Iman Deane SPIRIT OF SERVICE AWARD Likewise, during her High School years the second student has also continually participated in a variety of Community Partnership activities, ranging from weekly engagements to supporting a number of campaigns. This year she performed her duties with conscientiousness and quiet determination. She was respectful and hardworking at all times, embodying the spirit of servant leadership. She has been involved in visiting Booth Memorial Hospital since the programme first began in 2018 and has been

courageous and warm in her interaction with the patients, setting an excellent example for the other students.

AWARDS IN RECOGNITION OF ‘SERVICE AND LOYALTY TO THE SCHOOL’ Erin Fortuin SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL CHAPEL AWARD Confidence is a plant of slow growth, but from its flowers a leader emerges. The recipient of this award has grown so much in self-confidence, both within her role and her belief in herself. Her commitment to her responsibilities and her integrity have ensured that there is good communication to all involved in the services, making their preparation so much easier. She has embraced change without allowing the traditional aspects of Chapel to be disregarded, and it has been a joy to work alongside her.

Khanyisile Mafeje SERVICE TO THE BOARDING HOUSE AWARD This student accepted her role in Katherine House as Head of Boarders and fulfilled her responsibilities in a respectful, kind and bold manner. Her integrity and mature contribution to the well-being of our boarders has seen her gain enormous respect from both boarders and staff alike. She is a team player with a wonderful sense of humour and is always willing to assist and handle any issues as they arise. Her many hours spent talking to all the girls and acting on issues such as diversity and the femicide of late, did not go unnoticed. She is a leader who has made a difference.

It is this dedication to duty that has allowed the girls to feel secure and at home in Katherine House.

This year the staff would like to recognise two students for their consistent support of the school, and willingness to be involved wherever there has been a need.

Taylor Kennedy SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY AWARD The first recipient is a student who has given much of herself to the school in terms of her consistent support and loyalty to a variety of school activities over the years, from her invaluable role as the First Team Hockey Captain to the Marimba Band and countless Round Square activities. She has always represented St Cyprian’s School with pride, and has inspired others by her enthusiasm, commitment and positive attitude.

Teresa Steyn SERVICE TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY AWARD Secondly, we wish to pay tribute to a student who has made a particular mark in her role as the Head of the Technical Team. She has led this team quietly, efficiently

and with great dedication and humility. In this position she has assumed an incredible amount of responsibility, thereby contributing to the success of countless school productions, musical showcases, Fashion Shows and events.

SPECIAL AWARDS IN RECOGNITION OF CHARACTER Leah Krige PRINCIPAL’S HONOUR AWARD The recipient of this prestigious award has fulfilled her leadership responsibilities with the utmost dedication.

As Deputy Head Girl she has demonstrated wonderful leadership skills, and she has been an outstanding role model of our school’s core values of respect, integrity, compassion and accountability. She has led by example in everything that she has done and has been a particularly good mentor to the girls in younger grades. She has displayed selflessness and kindness in her commitment to each and every school activity in which she has been involved and helped to lead, and her calm and unassuming style of leadership has served as an inspiration to many.

Loide Musweu ST CYPRIAN’S UNION HONOUR PRIZE The Honour Prize was first awarded in 1916, and its recipient is voted for by the Grade 12 students and staff.

The criteria for this award have remained constant: devotion to her duties in all spheres of school life, loyalty to the school, and always putting school before self.

We, the Union, would like to acknowledge the role that Loide Musweu, this year’s Head Girl, has played in the upholding of the values of St Cyprian’s School.

Loide Musweu ST CYPRIAN’S ROSE BOWL FOR EMBODYING THE VALUES OF RESPECT, INTEGRITY, COMPASSION AND ACCOUNTABILITY This award goes to the student whom the staff recognise as embodying the values of Respect, Integrity, Compassion and Accountability throughout her High School career. She has managed her position as the Head Girl admirably and liaised with staff and students with consummate grace and diplomacy. She approaches all that she does with maturity and a strong sense of responsibility, always aware of her influence as a role model to younger students, and the need to lead by example.

– Silver Award Jaime Ferrara Tristen Tedder EXPO: Won a Gold Medal at the Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in Cape Town for their project “Seament”. They were invited to participate in the Eskom Expo International Science Fair in Johannesburg.

– Silver Award Mumtaz Mohamood EXPO: Won a Gold Medal at the Regional Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in Cape Town for her project “The effect of e-cigarette vapour on plants”. Her project was then entered in the International Science Fair in Johannesburg and she was awarded a bronze medal, a prize for ‘Best Science Communication’ and a bursary to study at the University of Pretoria.
