REFLECTION QUESTIONS
FR KEVIN PROVIDES WEEKLY SCRIPTURE REFLECTION QUESTIONS TO HELP INDIVIDUALS ENRICH THEIR FAITH BY CONTEMPLATING SUNDAY READINGS.
Based on the readings for the 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time A
Readings: Ez 18:25-28/Phil 2:1-11 or 2:1-5/Mt 21:28-32
The Israelites are complaining because it seems as if God is punishing them (with the Babylonian Exile) for the sins of their ancestors. God sets the record straight: each is responsible for his/her own failings. Ezekiel sees life and death as consequences of moral behavior. Do you experience God punishing or rewarding people in this life for their moral successes or failures?
St. Paul reflects of the humility of Christ as a model for our communal life. Kenosis is the Greek word for self-emptying love. This becomes then the grounding force that keeps the community of Christ together. In the last few weeks, where have you encountered real humility, and how did that affect you?
The parable in the Gospel comes from the same source as Luke’s “Prodigal Son”. Words of compliance are not enough, but a life of obedience and responsiveness is the life of faith. Which of these two sons do you identify with the most? Why? Has that changed over time?
