EMERALD ASH BORER IS HERE.
What that means for St. Cloud: Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive insect that attacks and kills ash trees. Since first being found in Minnesota, it has continued to spread across the state and is now impacting communities, including St. Cloud.
HOW IT’S AFFECTING MINNESOTA
WHY IT MATTERS Ash trees have been a major part of Minnesota’s urban forests for decades. As EAB spreads, communities are seeing the loss of shade trees in parks, neighborhoods, and boulevards.
First deteced in Minnesota in 2009
Dead or declining ash trees can also create safety concerns, including:
and counting
Now found in
35+ counties
Millions of ash trees are at risk across the state
Falling limbs Unsafe trees near roads, trails, and playgrounds
EAB continues to spread
Loss of shade in parks and gathering spaces
Minnesota Department of Agriculture
Higher long-term removal and replacement costs
Green Circles: Active Infestations Light Green: Quarantined Counties
Adult beetles can fly
Movement of infested firewood
EAB was confirmed in Whitney Park in 2023 Over 80% of ash trees surveyed in Whitney Park are now infested or dead St. Cloud has more than 40,000 ash trees citywide (2020 MN DNR Report) Many are in decline and could pose serious risks to public safety
EAB Status Map (April 21st, 2026)
HOW EAB SPREADS
WHAT IT MEANS IN ST. CLOUD
SIGNS OF EAB INFESTATION
Transport of infected ash wood materials
D-shaped exit holes
S-shaped galleries under bark
Woodpecker activity
Thinning leaves and New sprouts (shoots) dieback in the growing from trunk or upper crown roots
YOU CAN HELP SLOW THE SPREAD: DON’T MOVE FIREWOOD. BUY IT WHERE YOU BURN IT.
