Matilda Jr. Program

Page 1

Based on Roald Dahl’s book of the same name, Matilda Jr., is a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing, however – the school’s mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!

*As in all fairy tales, there are some scary parts to our story in the battle between good and evil so we don’t recommend this production for children under the age of 7.

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

“Sometimes Matilda longed for a friend, someone like the kind, courageous people in her books”...... My first experience of Matilda was the 1996 film. Years later, I heard about the musical version that was taking the theater world by storm, but it wasn’t until I got the chance to be in a production and read Roald Dahl’s original book that I came to love the story. It is a story of the magic of books and reading, a story of courage and resilience in the face of cruelty, and ultimately, a story of the power of kindness and helping others.

This is the first time the musical Matilda has ever been performed at St. Cecilia Academy, and I can’t think of a better set of junior high students to bring this story to life! Each one of them is so uniquely talented, and they have come to this show with a joyful sense of enthusiasam, passion, and fun. I’m so proud of them and so grateful to them for all their hard work and dedication.

A special thank you to all our wonderful volunteers- George, Robert, and John for the beautiful set, Titus for working his chalk board magic, our amazing set painters Ivy, Grace, and Matilda who painted our incredible book arches and blocks, our talented SCA junior and high school crew for giving of their time selflessly, our wonderful parents who helped backstage including Erica Brister and Emily Rollins for lifting the scrim up and down, and to all the parents for their help and dedication. Thank you also to Erica Nute, Diane Meier, and Sister Josemaria for all your help, support, and leadership. Enjoy SCA’s first ever Junior High musical, “And don’t worry about the bits you can’t understand. Sit back and allow the words to wash around you, like music.” (Matilda, by Roald Dahl)
