Dear Dominican Campus Friends, It is always timely and in season to give thanks. I am eager to express my gratitude to each of you for supporting Overbrook Catholic School and St. Cecilia Academy, helping to make 2022-2023 an extraordinary year. The year was marked by bold strides forward in the strategic plan, and we owe much gratitude to you, our benefactors, for being partners in fulfilling this special Dominican mission.

It has been a joy to get to know these schools and the campus community in my first year, and it is a welcome challenge to serve them. I delight to work with the administration, faculty, and staff of the schools; they are talented and committed men and women, excellent in their craft, and attentive to prioritizing the heart of Catholic education to provide the opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ through the many facets that make up school life. Our Overbrook students remind us that hope is ever new. They have the contagious joy of innocence and youth, ready to delight in first friendships, trips to the farm, extra recess, and the virtuous satisfaction of a job well done. Our SCA girls are genuinely remarkable. I did not receive the gift of an all-girls education, nor have I taught or been principal in an all-girls school. This fact makes me appreciate even more the special gift here. I have consistently found that they are friendly, poised, and confident, maturing into strong young women of tomorrow, though they are not immune from the challenges of our day. I see them growing in the intellectual virtues that mark a Dominican education; they are serious and competent in their study, and sometimes, to their surprise, they greatly enjoy the endeavor!

In this report, you will see a sampling of the excellent work of each school. It was a historic year with the addition of SCA’s inaugural junior high students and OCS’s new preschool through sixth-grade model, along with the new name of Overbrook Catholic. The new leadership model on the campus was forged over the past year, and as anticipated, it affords continued energy and momentum for moving the strategic plan goals forward.

Most of all, this report celebrates you, our benefactors. The material and human resources needed to fulfill this divine and human mission can only be accomplished in collaboration with you and because of your generosity. Inspired by the example of St. Dominic, Overbrook Catholic School educates children to seek and embrace the truth, fostering in them a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. Children are thus prepared in mind and heart to give joyful witness to the truth in their own lives. Given the partnership between our faculty, staff, and families, as well as our generous donors, the 2022-2023 school year gave us much to celebrate. Here are just a few highlights: • In August, Overbrook began its first year with the new model of serving boys and girls through sixth-grade.

• With the new P3-sixth model, new leadership opportunities were introduced for sixth-grade students.

• 23 students received the sacrament of First Holy Communion.

OVERALL

• Forensics team members competed in 10 tournaments, earning 87 individual and four team awards.

• Twelve students placed in the top 6 at the Diocesan Forensics Championship and one team placed third.

• Five students received 4-H awards at the county level.

• Overbrook’s annual Spelling Bee lasted a record 24 rounds.

ACADEMICS

ATHLETICS

• In the Catholic Math League: - Five students received regional top-three awards.

- Three students received national top-three awards, including first in the nation for Math 4.

- Three teams received regional awards.

- Three teams received national awards including first in the nation for fourth grade.

• Two students received awards at MTSU’s Middle Grades Math Competition, and the sixth-grade team placed third.

• In the Perennial Math Awards: - Twelve students ranked in the top 10% of their grade level nationally.

- One team ranked in the top 10% of teams competing nationally.

- Three students received awards for the Zone 1 Division Tournament.

- Three teams placed third for their grade level in the Zone 1 Division Tournament.

- Three students placed in the top 15 at the National Tournament.

- Three teams placed in the top 15 nationally, including second place in the nation for fourth grade.

• Track students received 66 top-three finishes at Nashville Youth Athletics meets.

• Girls cross country placed fourth at the NYA Nashville Regional Meet.

• Five students placed in the top 15 at the NYA Cross Country Nashville Regional Meet.

• One student was selected for the Coach Cat All-Tournament Basketball Team.

RENOVATIONS

• Between May and August 2022, renovations took place to: - Add a second three-year-old classroom, conference and study spaces, offices, and a spirit store.

- Upgrade the Beyond the Brook Farm with a dedicated entrance, new barn, learning pavilion, and gardens.

• For the start of the 2023-24 school year, security enhancements include additional security personnel, glass film, and an enhanced camera system.

Gifts for annual operating support, tuition assistance, capital and special projects, and the endowment allow the school to fulfill its mission. ST. CECILIA ACADEMY Exercising its mission on the foundation of the life and teaching of the Catholic Church, St. Cecilia Academy ennobles young women, equips them to excel, and inspires them to lead lives of integrity. We are grateful to our dedicated faculty and staff, who, in partnership with our families and with support from our generous donors, have significant highlights to share from the 2022-2023 school year: OVERALL

• In August, SCA welcomed the inaugural seventh- and eighth-grade students, who brought so much joy to the hallways. In May, at the bookend of the year, eighth-grade Commencement was held at the Motherhouse.

• The 57 members of the Class of 2023 earned more than $12.2 million in merit scholarships for leadership, service and the arts, averaging more than $214,000 per student.

• SCA students volunteered more than 6,400 service hours.

• Many of our eighth graders received the sacrament of Confirmation at the Cathedral of the Incarnation. Three SCA high school students were chosen as sponsors.

• The theater program produced Little Women and A Wrinkle in Time, which enabled both high school and junior high students to participate on stage and behind the scenes. For the first time, our junior high thespians partnered with Montgomery Bell Academy for a theater production held on the MBA campus.

• In the Nashville High School Musical Theater Spotlight Awards, St. Cecilia received multiple nominations for All-Star Crew, All-Star Cast, Lead Performer, Outstanding Stage Manager, Technical Achievement, and Outstanding Design Concept.

ACADEMICS

ATHLETICS

• SCA students earned top national language awards across the board for French, Latin, and Spanish.

• Four students achieved perfect ACT subject-specific scores, placing them in the top 1-2% of the nation in the respective subject areas.

• An earlier resequencing of the math program continues to bear fruit, as eight sophomores earned passing scores in AP Calculus AB, which is typically achieved as a senior.

AP Calculus BC students also have a 100% pass rate with students receiving the highest score of 5.

• Thirty-six high school students were inducted into the National Honor Society which requires a cumulative weighted GPA of 93.5; and four junior high students were inducted into the inaugural National Junior Honor Society.

ARTS

• The St. Cecilia Dance Academy continues to grow. The spring dance show displayed the talents of both our youngest dancers as well as our high school Seasons Dance Club members who choreographed and

• A total of 11 sports were added for the junior high, and 2022-2023 was the inaugural year for a new strength and conditioning program.

• Four athletes were recognized by the TSSAA with the Multi-Sport Athlete Award.

RENOVATIONS

• Between May and August 2022, renovations took place to ready spaces for the new junior high program, as well as enhancements to high school areas.

• For the start of the 2023-2024 school year, security enhancements have been completed, including additional security personnel, glass film, and an enhanced camera system.

• Overwhelming Rose Gala support has enabled an upgrade to the interior of the SCA theater and includes new seating, sound system, house and stage lighting, paint, and carpeting.

For nearly 165 years, SCA has provided academic and cultural formation in the art of living and what it means to be a person created in the image and likeness of God. Gifts for annual operating support, tuition assistance, capital and special projects, and the endowment allow the school to thrive. Ways to Support Overbrook Catholic School and St. Cecilia Academy The collective Overbrook Catholic School and St. Cecilia Academy community of parents, grandparents, alumni, parents of alumni, foundations, corporate sponsors, and friends make a profound impact on the schools. There are a number of ways to support and help the schools carry out their missions, including:

ANNUAL FUND – The Annual Fund is the foundation of each school’s development program and the top fundraising priority. Along with tuition and endowment earnings, the Annual Fund is a significant source of revenue for the current school year’s operating budget. It is the most important source of unrestricted funds and helps cover the difference between tuition and the actual cost of educating each student.

ENDOWED GIFTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS – A gift to the endowment

keeps on giving for generations to come. An endowed fund exists in perpetuity and the school benefits by a percentage of earnings each year.

CAPITAL GIFTS AND SPECIAL PROJECT SUPPORT – Gifts for capital improvements, building enhancements, renovations, and special projects and initiatives are encouraged as they help improve the facilities and programming to best serve students.

PLANNED GIVING – A planned gift often enables a donor to make an extraordinary gift while receiving significant tax benefits. Planned gifts typically build the endowment, therefore ensuring the long-term financial health and vitality of the schools. The most common vehicles for making a planned gift are through one’s will, trust, or life insurance policy.
