built by nature. rooted in history. made for play.

Words from the Parks Director

Ryan Graham

St. Charles County Parks Director

There are many significant events and activities in life that one tends to remember. First days of school, learning to ride a bike, first job, graduating college, having children. All are important memories and milestones. One of the things I remember and I’m sure a lot of people remember is fishing. Though I’m not sure about when I caught my first fish, I remember going out with my great-grandfather to a spot up by my hometown called Lucky Lakes and going fishing when I was just a boy. I remember going on family fishing trips with my grandparents and mom and dad, where on one occasion my grandma reeled in a huge snapping turtle. I remember taking countless trips with my grandpa to Bennett Springs to go trout fishing, where the rule was you wake up at the whistle and you fished until the whistle blew. Great times and cherished memories.

In St. Charles County Parks we have made it a focus to improve our fishing and aquatic resources to help foster these times and memories for future generations. In 2021, we established our Natural Resources Aquatic Division. This dedicated team of four has put in a lot of time to make fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding in St. Charles County a fun and memorable experience. One of the ways they have improved our water resources is by simply improving access. Shorelines have been better managed to allow easier access for fishing. In these areas they have created sunken fish habitats and spawning grounds to help improve the quality of life for fish. They have worked to eliminate invasive aquatic plants and helped to

About the Parks Department

The St. Charles County Parks & Recreation Department was created in 1997 after voters approved a local use tax with the sole purpose of park land acquisition, development, operations, and maintenance. The department’s mission is to preserve natural and historic features in areas throughout the county for the use of future generations. Today, the department has 22 parks, 19 of which are open with three in reserve, totaling 4,403 acres of acquired park land. From historic homesteads to a skate park; from camping, hiking, biking, and fishing to weddings and educational classrooms, there’s something for everyone in St. Charles County Parks. For more information and specifics about each park, amenities, trails, and more, visit stccparks.org.

mitigate natural vegetative blooms which potentially could harm humans, pets and aquatic wildlife.

One of the more exciting things they have worked on is creating a fish census. Using an electroshock boat, our aquatic team goes out, captures, measures and records the fish they find. These fish are recorded based on species and size. This helps us identify which species are thriving and which are struggling, allows us to plan for restocking efforts, and helps us determine what species may need to be reduced in a certain lake and moved to another body of water. This helps ensure that when you come to a St. Charles County park and fish, you have a great opportunity to catch a great fish and create that lasting memory.
