Summer 2024: May–August
Words from the Parks Director
Ryan GrahamSt. Charles County Parks Director
Here we go again... The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department is getting ready to unveil another new park! Design and engineering work are underway for Spring Bend Park, 126 gorgeous, rolling acres located along the bluff of the Missouri River in St. Charles.
The property was donated by Nancy and William Knowles more than 15 years ago. The Knowles were dedicated nature lovers who spent the majority of their free time on the property surrounded by nature and the beauty of prairies and wildflowers. They wanted to ensure that their beloved property would continue to be protected and enjoyed. To help conserve the property, they worked with St. Charles County and the Ozark Land Trust to put the property in a strict conservation easement. This helps protect the property from further development and ensures that proper management practices are taken to promote the natural beauty.
In planning for the new park, the mission is to create a brand-new conservation area that highlights the Knowles family and their love for nature in in St. Charles. Our team consists of award-winning landscape architects and engineers at SWT Design. Within the 126 acres, our ecological team has identified over 174 different plant species. The park will focus on natural resources, woodlands, prairies and native habitats. Trails will be built to allow park visitors to immerse themselves in nature and learn about the flora and fauna surrounding them. Spring Bend Park will truly be a special place, bringing a natural oasis to an area of the county that is otherwise completely developed with homes and businesses.
We look forward to opening Spring Bend Park! We hope you and your family will enjoy it while making unforgettable memories.
About the Parks Department
The St. Charles County Parks & Recreation Department was created in 1997 after voters approved a local use tax with the sole purpose of park land acquisition, development, operations, and maintenance. The department’s mission is to preserve natural and historic features in areas throughout the county for the use of future generations. Today, the department has 22 parks, 19 of which are open with three in reserve, totaling 4,403 acres of acquired park land. From historic homesteads to a skate park; from camping, hiking, biking, and fishing to weddings and educational classrooms, there’s something for everyone in St. Charles County Parks. For more information and specifics about each park, amenities, trails, and more, visit stccparks.org.

NATURAL RESOURCE TEAM
SAVES DEER
St. Charles County Parks Department conducted an early spring prescribed burn at Spring Bend Park on Wednesday, March 6. While checking the area after the burn, the natural resource team noticed multiple large holes in the prairie. Upon inspection, staff found a deer trapped in a hole that was roughly 5 feet deep. The deer appeared to have been stuck for awhile, and had clumps of dirt caked onto its fur. The staff was able to get some shovels to make the hole larger and help the deer escape. Once the dirt was removed, the deer immediately tried getting out but struggled as it was still a little too steep. Staff were able to reach down and help the deer out. The deer bounded away and ran toward the trees and brush like it was never stuck, and appeared to be in no harm and otherwise unaffected by the fire or smoke. Luckily, Parks staff was vigilant and able to save the deer!
The area burned at Spring Bend was approximately 10 acres of a 30-acre prairie of warm-season grasses and wildflowers. Only a portion of the prairie was burned to leave some undisturbed habitat for wildlife. During this burn, “escape routes“ were left for any wildlife, such as rabbits, deer, and ground birds, to get out before the burn was completed. Parks staff observed two woodcocks and several rabbits using these paths during the process.
