Ryan Graham
St. Charles County Parks Director
When people discover that I work for St. Charles County Parks, one of the most common questions I hear is, “Which park is your favorite?” It’s a simple question, but difficult to answer.
Each one of our parks offers something unique. Do you choose Veterans Tribute with its great trail system and the playground my kids love? Do you pick Klondike for the beautiful vistas and lake surrounded by silica sand? Maybe it’s Matson Hill Park and the great natural surface trail system I enjoy so much and often get lost in. You could choose Oglesby, our most recent park development that was started and completed in seven months, and has won multiple awards for design and planning.
Having started with this parks department 17 years ago as the Park Historian, I sometimes feel connected to the parks I helped bring along and develop into our system like Lindenwood Park (The Historic Daniel Boone Home) and the Heritage Museum.
It’s a tough question to answer. As a Parks Director, trying to answer it makes you feel like you’re choosing your “favorite child,” and we all know that’s something you don’t do—or at least you don’t let your siblings know you are the favorite (sorry if you see this Sarah). It’s a bit of a cop-out, but the right answer is “all of them.” All St. Charles County Parks are
The St. Charles County Parks & Recreation Department was created in 1997 after voters approved a local use tax with the sole purpose of park land acquisition, development, operations, and maintenance. The department’s mission is to preserve natural and historic features in areas throughout the county for the use of future generations. Today, the department has 22 parks, 19 of which are open with three in reserve, totaling 4,403 acres of acquired park land. From historic homesteads to a skate park; from camping, hiking, biking, and fishing to weddings and educational classrooms, there’s something for everyone in St. Charles County Parks. For more information and specifics about each park, amenities, trails, and more, visit stccparks.org.
my favorite and it’s for all the reasons I mentioned above and more. What can be seen and experienced in our parks is amazing: engaging in nature, playing a round of disc golf with friends, walking, hiking, ripping through a trail on a mountain bike, or learning new things at a program. Our parks offer something for everyone.
What we see and experience is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to our parks. Behind every successful park is a lot of people who make it happen. From our maintenance crews who put in a lot of time and effort to keep up the parks, to our front desk staff who take your reservations for the shelter you plan to have a family event in, there is a dedicated and passionate parks and recreation staff who every day make it their mission to make our parks the best they can be.
So when you’re out enjoying St. Charles County in your “favorite” park, I hope you get the opportunity to wave or say hi to our Parks crew. I’m sure you will be greeted with a smile and wave back because our favorite thing in our parks is seeing you enjoy them.

Phase Three of the redevelopment of St. Charles County Kinetic Park will kick off in late summer. This phase is the final development in a multi-year plan to “reimagine” what was once called the Youth Activity Park. When the park opened in 2005, it was the home to the largest outdoor skate park in Missouri. Attendance at the park started to dwindle in 2010. By 2019, the facility was struggling to attract new users. In 2020, a new plan to redevelop the park was put in place that started with a rebranding of the facility from the Youth Activity Park to Kinetic Park. This first phase also saw the reconfiguration of the parking lot to accommodate more cars and the installation of a pump track and a bike skills course. Phase Two of the project started in 2023 and is scheduled to be completed this fall. This development phase included remodeling the existing building, a new check-in area, updated party rooms, and new high adventure climbing and obstacle elements for park guests.
In addition, a new 8,000 sq. ft. building is under construction to house a new indoor recreation space, expanded concession area, restrooms, and indoor pickleball courts.
Phase Three sees the construction of a new 30,000-square-foot splash pad with sprayers, bubblers, waterfalls, and other fun elements; a new outdoor pickleball facility with eight lighted courts and a one-of-a-kind big wheel racecourse.
These improvements will be an amazing addition to the St. Charles County Parks system. We look forward to seeing everyone out and enjoying the new and improved Kinetic Park.

Trail routes are for beginner levels, with occasional rocks and roots and one small creek crossing that can be walked through if needed. Bail-out points are available at 1 mile, 2 miles, and 3 miles.
