Summer 2026: May-August built by nature. rooted in history. made for play.

Ryan Graham
St. Charles County Parks Director
When it comes to parks, one of the most essential components is a good playground. Playgrounds are at the center of many of our core childhood memories. Growing up in the '80s, playgrounds were not merely a collection of steel, gravel, woodchips and plastic. They were places where masterclasses in physics happened as we tried to spin the merry-go-round as fast as possible. They were where we tested our bravery by swinging to the highest point and jumping off. Most of all, they were places of unsupervised freedom where we created new ways to play with old and new friends. We grew up capable, learning to manage our own risks and navigate friendships without a “playdate” being scheduled.
While society has certainly changed over the years, and playgrounds have evolved into structures we could only imagine when we were younger, the importance of play—and a good playground—has not changed. St. Charles County Parks Department has placed an emphasis in recent years on creating some of the best playgrounds in our area. We strived to create opportunities for kids of all ages and abilities to come together to experience play, make friends, and create those core memories.
I am proud to announce that this year we will be opening some new and exciting play opportunities.
The St. Charles County Parks & Recreation Department was created in 1997 after voters approved a local use tax with the sole purpose of park land acquisition, development, operations, and maintenance. The department’s mission is to preserve natural and historic features in areas throughout the county for the use of future generations. Today, the department has 23 parks, 19 of which are open with two in developement and two in reserve, totaling 5,190 acres of acquired park land. From historic homesteads to a skate park; from camping, hiking, biking, and fishing to weddings and educational classrooms, there’s something for everyone in St. Charles County Parks. For more information and specifics about each park, amenities, trails, and more, visit stccparks.org.

In 2025, we began construction on a new play area at The Park at New Melle Lakes. This park had not previously had a playground, so we needed to fix that situation. The new playground features slides, climbers, swings and boardwalks. One of the most common complaints we receive when we put in a new playground is “there’s no shade”. It’s hard to keep trees alive when we build these facilities, but at New Melle Lakes, we have tucked the playground into a forested area which provides shade and new ways to engage with nature.
One of the most exciting play opportunities I am looking forward to in 2026 is the opening of the St. Charles County Kinetic Park splash play area. While not a playground in the traditional sense, it is definitely a playground. The new splash play area will be one of the largest in our area, with slides, water dumps, spray nozzles and expanded play opportunities. This new splash play area will open Saturday, May 30 during our rededication event at Kinetic Park.
We hope to see you and your family out enjoying these new play spaces in a St. Charles County park.

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit a park, walk the trails, and enjoy the refreshing cool breeze and stunning fall colors. St. Charles County Parks offers three types of trails:
• Paved Trails: These are covered with asphalt and located near parking lots, picnic shelters, and other park facilities.
• Natural Surface Trails: These trails feature natural terrain for hikers and cyclists. Equestrian use is available at Broemmelsiek and Indian Camp Creek Park.
• Bike-Only Downhill Trails: These exciting trails include steep drops and sharp turns that keep riders engaged and exhilarated.
Come test out the newest bike-only trail at Missouri Bluffs Park! Riders are needed to help pack down the trail—the more it’s ridden, the more weather-resistant it becomes. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: routes range from beginner to expert, so please check the trail before riding.

Discover the frontier in new and exciting ways! Campers travel back in time to 1830s Missouri to “learn by doing” during this weeklong camp. Campers take part in hands-on activities centered around fiber, fire, and food. Each camper will contribute to projects that benefit the site, as well as create take-home projects throughout the week. Campers must bring a sack lunch each day. Pre-registration is required.

St. Charles County Parks and the St. Charles County Police Department are partnering up for a new weeklong camp focused on mentoring students ages 10-12 during summer break. Activities encourage leadership skills and build connections with other youth outside of the school setting, all while having fun fishing and playing laser tag. Children will also experience multiple police demonstrations, including K-9 and first aid instruction. Camp will conclude with a graduation event at the Quail Ridge Lodge on Friday afternoon. Pre-registration is required.
