Words from the Parks Director Throughout the year, St. Charles County Parks provides a wide range of programming to appeal to almost anyone. Whether you are looking to learn a new skill or craft, find a summer program for a child, learn about nature or history, or simply just get out and be more active outdoors, we have a program for any interest.

This year, our Natural Resource Aquatics Division hosted a fishing program Ryan Graham St. Charles County Parks Director at Hideaway Harbor Park on the Mississippi River, called Whisker Wars Catfish Tournament. I hope this becomes an annual tradition! Personally, I’ve always enjoyed larger events, such as Spirits of the Past and the Christmas Candlelight Walk at The Historic Daniel Boone Home. These signature events consistently impress with their beauty and the variety of activities they offer. I have fond memories of taking my kids to our Fall Harvest Festival at Broemmelsiek Park, where they learned new things like making dye from walnuts and spinning sorghum.

About the Parks Department The St. Charles County Parks & Recreation Department was created in 1997 after voters approved a local use tax with the sole purpose of park land acquisition, development, operations, and maintenance. The department’s mission is to preserve natural and historic features in areas throughout the county for the use of future generations. Today, the department has 22 parks, 19 of which are open with three in reserve, totaling 4,405 acres of acquired park land. From historic homesteads to a skate park; from camping, hiking, biking, and fishing to weddings and educational classrooms, there’s something for everyone in St. Charles County Parks. In 2026, we will introduce additional programming to commemorate a significant milestone in the United States: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Over these 250 years, our country has evolved from an idea into one of the most successful countries in world history.

To celebrate this anniversary, the St. Charles County Parks Department has teamed up with local organizations, including America 250, to create historic-themed programming and activities. These events are designed to be enjoyable and engaging for audiences of all ages.

Throughout the year, you will notice several programs marked with a special symbol, indicating they are part of the St. Charles America 250 celebrations. These initiatives offer additional opportunities to learn about and appreciate St. Charles County Parks.

ON-DEMAND PROGRAMS FRIDAY NIGHT PUBLIC STARGAZING

RANGER-GUIDED LOW ROPES COURSE

Discover the stars and constellations on clear Friday nights through the largest public-viewing telescope in Missouri and other complex scopes in the park! Join the Astronomical Society of Eastern Missouri (ASEM) at the Broemmelsiek Park Astronomy Viewing Area for free educational programs for the entire family. Programs begin 30 minutes past sunset and can last into the night. Advanced registration is requested for groups of 10 or more. Email outreach@asemonline.org or visit asemonline.org for more information.

The low ropes course at Missouri Bluffs Park is great for team building and problem solving and consists of 10 obstacles, such as the Tire Traverse, TP Shuffle, Log Cabin and Log Swing. The course is never to be used without a Special Use Authorization from the Parks Department, and all participants must complete the appropriate Waiver of Liability form prior to participation.

RANGER-GUIDED HIKES Our Park Rangers are ready to take your group on an unforgettable hiking experience through any St. Charles County park of your choice. Hear about park history, plant and animal life, and learn fun nature facts to impress your friends! These group hikes are great for meeting merit badge requirements for scouts or just getting outside to explore what the St. Charles County Parks system has to offer. Hikes are available year-round on a first come, first served basis, and are $5 per person per hour. Specific requests are considered for an additional fee.

Hikes are best if limited to groups of 24. Call our administrative office to make a reservation today!

OUTREACH PROGRAMS School groups, scout groups, homeschoolers and church groups can find what they’re looking for in County parks.

These exciting nature and history-based programs can include a nature hike, park history, plant and animal life exploration, fishing and aquatic life, forest ecology, and more! Pack your lunch and pick your favorite park and activities, and then we do the rest! Cost is nominal per hour.

The Historic Daniel Boone Home also offers unique field trips for children ages 9 and up. These two-hour sessions can include fire starting, animal signs, black powder, trade and bartering, historic construction, and carpentry. Cost is $8 per child.

Don’t forget the new educational opportunities at the Heritage Museum! These 90-minute history-based programs allow guests to explore St. Charles County history to the fullest, while giving them a behind-the-scenes look at the world of museums! Participants explore our collection of heritage artifacts and learn the importance of preservation. Cost is $5 per person.

Christmas Candlelight Walks TICKETS GO ON SALE WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 3

The St. Charles County Parks Department is excited for its signature program, Christmas Candlelight Walks!

To make this year’s event even more special, we are hosting a Christkindlmarkt, which is German for Christmas Market. We are looking for unique, local vendors who are interested in selling their handmade goods and crafts at the Candlelight Walks under the Grand Pavilion on Dec. 5-6 and 12-13. There is no registration fee, but space is limited. Vendors are subject to review by the department. Roughly 700 guests visit the park each night of this event for a candlelit night of stories, crafts, and community!

Dardenne Creek

Blueways are designated recreational trails and access sites that follow waterways, connecting visitors to nature and a variety of outdoor activities.

The Dardenne Creek Blueway is a five-phase project—Phases 1 and 2 are currently open, with the remaining phases set to open soon!

For Phases 3, 4, and 5, St. Charles County Parks has contracted with Flatwoods Park access points and implement grade control stabilization, which Kuesel Excavating to construct launch improves the creek’s depth and flow. These enhancements help stabilize water conditions, allowing Hackmann paddlers to navigate the Blueway without needing to exit their vessels.

Once complete, the Dardenne Creek Blueway will span approximately 19 miles, linking parks including Riverside Landing, 370 Lakeside Park, Lone Wolff Park, Jack Gettemeyer Park, O’Fallon Sports Park, and Bluebird Meadow Park.

PROTECTING OUR BLUEWAYS

The St. Charles County Parks Natural Resources Aquatics Team plays a vital role in maintaining the Blueway. During Phase 1, the team spent 110 hours in December 2021 clearing three major log jams.

Phase 2 took two years to complete and required the removal of numerous hazardous trees. Thanks to their continued efforts after each rainfall, the number of obstructions has significantly decreased, helping keep the Blueway safe and navigable for all visitors.

St. Charles County Parks offers three types of trails: • Paved Trails: These are covered with asphalt and located near parking lots, picnic shelters, and other park facilities.

• Natural Surface Trails: These trails feature natural terrain for hikers and cyclists.

Equestrian use is available at Broemmelsiek and Indian Camp Creek Park.

• Bike-Only Downhill Trails: These exciting trails include steep drops and sharp turns that keep riders engaged and exhilarated.

The Parks Department is excited to announce the opening of our second bike-only course at Missouri Bluffs Park!

BINGO NIGHT Where shouting is not only allowed, it’s encouraged! Join us for an exciting evening at St. Charles County Kinetic Park’s Monthly Bingo Night from 7 to 9 p.m. on the first Friday of every month, August-December. This all-ages event is sure to bring fun and friendly competition! Pre-registration is required.

CORN MAZE You’ll enjoy getting lost while trying to find your way out of our three-acre corn maze located behind the Agriculture Educational Area at Broemmelsiek Park. This free, fun adventure takes you through a new maze of twists, turns and dead ends this season. Bring the family out for the challenge from 7 a.m. to 30 minutes past sunset, daily. The corn maze closes at the end of October.

WATERSHED WARRIORS Would you like to give back to your community? Come and pick up litter to keep our St. Charles County parks looking beautiful!

Not only is trash an eyesore, but it can hurt the environment and the animals that call our parks home. Join Park Rangers this fall and help clean up the waterways in various parks. Dress for the weather. Bring a water bottle, sturdy shoes or boots; no flip flops or sandals. Trash is messy! Wear something that can get dirty. Long pants and insect repellent are recommended.

SPIRITS OF THE PAST As night descends on Saturday, Oct. 11, walk the lantern-lit paths at The Historic Daniel Boone Home while listening to superstitions and stories brought to life throughout the historic village. Is there truth to these dark tales? You decide. Limited tickets are available. Tickets for Village-Only tours are $10 each and do not include admission to the Boone Home. Tickets to both the village and Boone Home are $15 each. Boone Home tour times are established at registration. Guests may arrive early to enjoy the village but cannot line up to enter the Boone Home until the time on their ticket. Though there will be warming stations, remember to dress for the weather.

Good walking shoes are encouraged as the gravel paths will be dimly lit. Expect short waits outside various vignettes and be aware that not everyone may see all the vignettes. Each station repeats every 8-10 minutes. No flash photography or video recording allowed. Tickets are nonrefundable.

FALL HARVEST FESTIVAL Festival-goers explore historic harvest recipes and trades related to food preparation and view historical demonstrations, build an inexpensive wreath to take home, enjoy a fun corn maze and purchase pumpkins and other goods from participating vendors. Step back in time this holiday season during The Historic Daniel Boone Home’s annual Christmas Candlelight Walks.

The historic village comes alive as guests experience different holiday traditions reminiscent of life in the early 1800s. Listen to holiday tales as you meander through the park, illuminated with thousands of candles; enjoy traditional carols as you sip on warm apple cider; and visit the Christkindlemarkt in the Grand Pavilion. Scout Builds

INCLUSIVE SENSORY TRAIL at Klondike Park

Sam Babcock reached out to the St. Charles County Parks Department with a meaningful idea for his Eagle Scout project: constructing a sensory trail at Klondike Park designed to be accessible for as many people as possible—including those who are visually impaired.

“I chose to construct this sensory trail for my Eagle Project because scouting has given me the opportunity to climb to the top of Mount Baldy, sleep under the stars, and feel my smallness in the grandness of nature…” Babcock said. “But I’ve also learned that these adventures are not easily accessible for everyone. I am privileged and blessed to have had these opportunities.”

After receiving the green light from the Parks Department, the real work began. Babcock partnered with Lighthouse for the Blind and Touch Graphics to design two interpretive signs featuring engaging graphics, tactile surfaces, Braille, and audio descriptions.

Hackmann Lumber and The Home Depot donated materials to build signposts, while local nurseries— including Bee Garden, Parkview Gardens, and Daniel’s Greenhouse—donated Missouri native plants to create a pollinator-friendly sensory garden.

When it came time to install the trail, volunteers from the Boy Scouts of America came together to help plant flowers, extend the graveled path to include a seating area, and lay pavers marking the location of the interpretive signs.

“The sensory trail at Klondike Park was a small way to help others experience these same adventures— to give back and express my gratitude,” Babcock said.

SPOON CARVING WORKSHOP Bring in those spoon tools and let’s get carving! Learn the fundamentals that lead to the satisfaction of making objects that can then be used daily in this 10-hour weekend workshop at The Historic Daniel Boone Home. The weekend course covers selecting and preparing wood that makes for good, useful spoons. Participants are taught knife grips, proper safety techniques, the use of hook knives, and sharpening techniques.

Wood for carving is provided. Participants must bring their own carving tools and a means for sharpening, like waterstones, diamond plates, sandpaper, etc. A list of recommended tools and sharpening equipment is sent after registration. This workshop is for ages 18 and up. Cost is $80 per person; preregistration is required.

NATURE ARTS AND CRAFTS: PINE NEEDLE BASKETS Get creative with nature! Join Park Rangers at the Broemmelsiek Visitor Center for supplies and instructions on how to create arts and crafts using natural elements. In this session, adults and children ages 12 and up are invited to make pine needle baskets. This more advanced meditative craft involves bundling pine needles together to form a small basket. HOW TO HAVE A GREEN HOLIDAY SEASON Embrace eco-conscious holiday traditions with our park rangerled lecture on greening your holiday season. Learn simple yet effective techniques to reduce waste, conserve energy, and celebrate sustainably for a merry, bright, and green holiday season. Pre-registration is requested.

HANDS ON HERITAGE: GOURD CRAFTING Design the perfect holiday decoration this season at The Historic Daniel Boone Home. Paint a snowman or Santa Claus, or create your own birdhouse with a gourd! Participants partake in the entire gourd crafting process: from scrubbing the gourd to preparing the surface for crafting. Participants should arrive at 11 a.m. and allow for several hours to complete their gourds as working times vary. Please bring a lunch. This program is for ages 12 and up. Cost is $5 per person; pre-registration is required. Space is limited! The program is held outdoors under a pavilion. Participants should prepare for cold or warm weather conditions and wear clothing that can get dirty.

MAKING HISTORY: FLOOR CLOTH DESIGN

HOMESCHOOL SKILLBUILDER: PENNY RUGS

After studying historic designs of floor cloths and their uses in the 18th century, participants can draw out designs and transfer them to canvas to make their own modern versions.

These designs can range from simple to intricate. Canvas, brushes, and acrylic paint are provided in a limited palette.

Please dress in clothes that can be paint stained.

Pre-registration is required.

Penny rugs date back to the 1800s and were made from sewing scraps of wool and felt when materials were scarce during the Civil War. Homeschoolers have the opportunity to make a small version of a penny rug at the Boyd House at Towne Park. Space is limited! Pre-registration is required. Younger siblings are welcome to play at the park or school in another portion of the building with guardians.

ROLLERBLADE LESSONS - BEGINNERS Ready to roll? Start your rollerblade adventure at St. Charles County Kinetic Park! Join us for beginner rollerblade lessons, where you’ll learn everything from getting up and down with skates on to gliding backwards and making smooth turns.

Master skills like forward marching, braking (T-stop, built-in brake, or pizza slice), hopping, and more. By the end of the course, you’ll be ready to roll into the Intermediate level.

Level up your rollerblading skills with St. Charles County Kinetic Park’s Intermediate Lessons! In our Intermediate class, master techniques like scooter pushes (right and left), forward 1-foot glides, backward 1-foot glides, forward crossovers (both left and right turns), slalom skills, curb step-ups and downs, and smooth forward-to-backward transitions. Led by August from Skate St. Louis, this class is perfect for skaters ages 7-12 who are ready to advance! Lessons are 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for three weeks. Pre-registration is required.

RC OPEN RIDE

RC drivers, start your engines! Come to St. Charles County Kinetic Park from 8:30-10 a.m. the first Saturday of each month before the park opens to drive your RC cars across the park. No other riding is allowed during this time. This free program is for all ages. Pre-registration is requested. ***Cars are prohibited from being on the vert ramp.

FALL/WINTER OPEN RIDES Riders and their horses are invited to come inside the National Equestrian Center for Fall/Winter Open Ride sessions! Horse and rider pairs are welcome to sign up and enjoy premium riding space for a two-hour session in climate-controlled indoor arenas to train, practice and exercise. Registered participants receive a tack-up stall; all riders must clean up after their horses.

HALLOWEEN DISC GOLF GLOW TOURNAMENT Compete for cash and prizes at the St. Charles County Parks Halloween Disc Golf Tournament on Friday, Oct. 24 at The Park at New Melle Lakes. This fun disc-tossing tournament offers a mix of short and long holes that travel in and out of the woods.

Baskets lit by the glow of pumpkins will mark the course of the 18-hole event. Participants must bring their own discs; a limited amount of LED lights are available for purchase. The event is limited to 72 players and 4 participants per card. Cost is $10 per person; cash-only registration on the day of the event from 5:30-6:45 p.m. The tournament begins with a shotgun start at 7 p.m.

SANTA AT THE SKATEPARK Skate into the holidays with Santa at the Skatepark at St. Charles County Kinetic Park. Bring your camera for a special photo opportunity with Santa, and don’t forget to drop off your wish list! This event is free, but we kindly ask you to bring canned food items to be donated to the St. Vincent De Paul Food Bank. Hot beverages and candy canes are available for purchase from Bri’s Coffee during the event. A parent-signed waiver and helmets are required to ride.

Compete for cash and prizes, trophies, and a Thanksgiving turkey at the Annual Blind Turkey Toss Disc Golf Glow Tournament at Indian Camp Creek Park. The contest begins at 5:15 p.m. with a shotgun start. Follow glow stick-lined baskets that mark the 18-hole course. Top finishers are awarded trophies, and the closest to the basket wins a Thanksgiving turkey! A limited amount of LED lights are available to purchase.
