FOREWARD At St Catherine’s British School we consider Year 10 to be the starting point of the educational philosophy that will prepare our successful students for their studies at top universities around the world. At this stage we cease to refer to them as pupils or children and confer on them the title student with all the meaning that implies. A student not only studies but increasingly shares the responsibility for his or her own success or failure while the teacher steadily assumes the mantle of a mentor and guide, not only with regard to academic progress but also in assisting the students’ progress into the adult world. One of the most satisfying aspects of education in the Upper School years is to see that the differences in status and attitude, that can separate teachers from their charges, begin to erode, until the final year of school when the students and their mentors confront the challenge of the final examinations together with a sense of common purpose and determination. The most important role for both parents and teachers in the process of choosing options is to provide as much information as possible to the students. AN INTRODUCTION TO KS4 Key Stage 4 is followed by students in the age range of fourteen to sixteen, at the end of which the students sit the (I)GCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) public examinations in their chosen academic subjects. Its place in the framework of the curriculum at St Catherine’s British School is shown on page 6. It is a Key Stage that differs greatly from most other national education systems catering for this age group, for example those in Greece and North America, and since St Catherine's British School is especially sensitive to the needs of the international community, it is important to outline the essential characteristics of Key Stage 4 in detail. The importance of Key Stage 4 is based on the fact that it represents the final stage of compulsory schooling as described in the National Curriculum of England and Wales. There was a time when the vast majority of students would have been expected to leave school at the end of this stage and to enter the job market. Only a small proportion of students would have continued their schooling for two more years with a view to enter university. Fortunately access to higher and further education has widened greatly and at a school like St Catherine’s, the normal expectation is for all students to continue their education beyond Key Stage 4 through years 12 and 13 and on to university or college. However, the historical significance of this stage of education is highlighted by the fact that the public (I)GCSE examinations at its end have been retained and still have a crucial role in determining a student’s educational future. These are the first examinations that remain on a student’s personal academic record and will be declared on any application to university or college. Although Key Stage 4 is orientated to the needs of the (I)GCSE examinations at its conclusion, it offers much more than examination preparation. The commitment to the wellrounded education vital to the development of fourteen, fifteen and sixteen year olds is enshrined in its curriculum and Key Stage 4 students at St Catherine's British School will continue to follow the courses in Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship and Education (P.S.H.C.E.), Physical Education and Computing (regardless of whether it is taken as a full exam subject) plus they will have a chance to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh International Award and to take part in inter-school sports, creative or cultural events, debate club, drama and music productions and a multitude of educational visits.

FEATURES OF THE IGCSE PROGRAMME At St Catherine's British School
● Key Stage 4 students at St Catherine's British School follow courses in nine or ten (I)GCSE subjects that culminate in examinations at the end of Year 11. These examinations test the material taught in both Year 10 and Year 11. ● English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, The Sciences, and one Foreign Language are compulsory (I)GCSE subjects at St Catherine's British School. ● The (I)GCSE curriculum aims to provide positive educational experiences for both student and teacher. The students are rewarded for positive achievement - what they know, understand and can do - rather than being penalised for errors. ● As well as testing whether students can recall information and present it in an orderly manner, the curriculum allows learners to develop in a wide range of areas, incorporating verbal reasoning, investigative approaches, application of skills, knowledge and understanding as well as the ability to undertake individual and team projects. ● (I)GCSE examinations have an 8 or 9 -point scale of grades/ or levels: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F and G. FEATURES OF THE IGCSE PROGRAMME At St Catherine's British School
● (I)GCSE examinations are suitable for virtually the whole ability range, with the ability to study certain subjects at different levels, including core mathematics. ● Although (I)GCSE grades do not form the main basis for admission into university or college, it is a formal requirement that students entering university sector education in the UK have obtained grade C or 4/5 or better in English Language and Mathematics at (I)GCSE (or equivalent). Additionally candidates for medical sciences will be required to have a grade 5 minimum at (I)GCSE in any science subject that is not subsequently studied in years 12 and 13. ● The (I)GCSE Curriculum provides a suitable foundation for higher level courses such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, GCE ‘A’ levels, the European Baccalaureate and the North American Advanced Placement Test (APs).

SITTING THE IGCSE EXAMINATIONS At St Catherine's British School
● The examinations are taken at St Catherine’s School and then externally assessed, meaning that the students’ scripts are sealed after the examinations and sent to the UK for marking under the authorization of the relevant examining board. St Catherine's British School is a recognized examination centre for AQA, CIE (Cambridge Assessment International Education) and Edexcel. For AQA St Catherine's British School Examination Centre Number is 74074, with CIE we are Examination Centre Number GR149 and with Edexcel we are Examination Centre Number 92091. ● The (I)GCSE qualifications granted by all three examination boards are of equivalent standard and satisfy the requirements of the National Curriculum in Key Stage 4. The majority of subjects offered at St Catherine's British School follow the Cambridge board syllabi and are termed (I)GCSE (International GCSE). These syllabi are designed to be free of cultural bias so that they are equally accessible for internationally orientated students of all backgrounds, while maintaining their suitability for British candidates. In subjects where a Cambridge (I)GCSE option is not available, or is less applicable to our students, we have opted to follow the Edexcel or AQA syllabi. In each case the decision is based on the best interests of our students and the qualifications obtained are in all respects of equal standing. ● All of the examination board programmes studied by our pupils are fully recognized qualifications in both the UK and overseas, and Universities and Colleges appreciate and understand the level of rigor that these examinations demand. A STUDENT'S GUIDE TO SUBJECT SELECTION At St Catherine's British School
Take time to think about your subject selections - they are going to be the subjects that you follow for at least the next 2 years. Think in equal measures about how much you enjoy the subject as well as how strong you are at the subject. If you enjoy what you are doing, you are halfway there. Try to achieve a good balance of subjects - your interests or your future plans will most likely change or evolve, so it is always a good idea to keep your options open. Learn about the assessments. Are you someone who enjoys writing essays, or do essays worry you - some exams are shorter question based, and some are long answer based. Similarly, some subjects have coursework, which means some of your grade won't come from just sitting an exam - you will complete tasks that will contribute towards your final grade. Do not base your subject selection on whether or not you like a certain teacher! There is no guarantee of who your teacher will be, and things change all of the time! It is really important to think about you - taking a subject because your friend does it, is not a recipe for success. Talk to your teachers if you are wondering how you would fare at a subject at GCSE level.

A PARENT'S GUIDE TO SUBJECT SELECTION At St Catherine's British School
Subject selection can be challenging for your child - it requires a lot of self-reflection. Help them by working to help them understand their strengths and weaknesses. There are no subjects that hold a heavier 'weighting' to others. Each subject has its own merits and challenges. Try to help your child achieve a good balance of subjects - their interests or your future plans will most likely change or evolve, so it is always a good idea to keep options open. Some subjects, such as history, are exam heavy and require a strong essay writing ability. Other subjects such as Art or PE are coursework heavy, and your child will have to dedicate time outside of the classroom to develop skills and produce evidence. Think about whether your child is able to commit the time necessary for these subjects. Although subject selection at IGCSE level means they will take a set of exams in the chosen subjects, it does not define their future studies. It is possible for students to further their studies at a higher level, within reason, without having taken them at IGCSE level. Enable your child to have this time to start making decisions. Although we all have preconceptions about subjects, it is important for your child to start to pave out their own path.

COURSE OVERVIEW Students will draw upon a range of texts as reading stimuli and engage with creative as well as real and relevant contexts. Students will have opportunities to develop higher-order reading and critical thinking skills that encourage genuine enquiry into different topics and themes. This specification will ensure that students can read fluently and write effectively. Students will be able to demonstrate a confident control of Standard English and write grammatically correct sentences, deploying figurative language and analysing texts. GCSE English Language is designed on the basis that students should read and be assessed on high-quality, challenging texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Each text studied must represent a substantial piece of writing, making significant demands on students in terms of content, structure and the quality of language.

COURSE OVERVIEW The GCSE English Literature course gives students the opportunity to enjoy reading, to explore ideas and to express their personal response to a wide variety of stimulating texts. The attainment of a pass in GCSE English literature is more than a proof that the student is literate and well read; It shows that the student has the ability to read, appreciate, respond to and analyse in depth thought- provoking literature. This course needs a lively enquiring independent mind and a willingness to respond in a sensitive personal manner. The students are expected to show a depth of understanding of the texts, an awareness of the universal issues involved and an understanding of the literary techniques employed. During the lessons they are expected to discuss and share ideas and to explore their significance. They are taught a literary response and learn to write well-structured essays and respond to context questions. Assessment is based on Shakespeare and a 19th-century novel for Paper 1, and modern texts and poetry for Paper 2. Both exams aim to test the students’ literary analysis skills.

COURSE OVERVIEW The foundation tier IGCSE mathematics assesses students in a range of essential mathematical skills including: number, algebra, geometry & statistics. Pupils who take foundation tier mathematics are assessed on a 5 - 1 scale, with grade 5 being the highest grade that can be achieved. Approximately 40% of the questions will target the grade 4 & 5 boundary, to allow students the best possible chance at accessing this level. At foundation level, students are also assessed on their problem solving and mathematical reasoning skills.

COURSE OVERVIEW
Cambridge IGCSE (9–1) Mathematics provides a strong foundation of mathematical knowledge both for candidates studying mathematics at a higher level and those who will require mathematics to support skills in other subjects. The syllabus aims to build learners' confidence by helping them develop competence and fluency with mathematical concepts, methods and skills, as well as a feel for numbers, patterns and relationships. The syllabus also places a strong emphasis on solving problems and presenting and interpreting results. Learners also gain an understanding of how to communicate and reason using mathematical concepts.
ASSESSMENT 0980 - IGCSE Mathematics Extended
Pupils who follow the extended mathematics course will sit paper 2 and paper 4, and questions are all based on the extended curriculum. Paper 2 - 1h30 - 35% Paper 4 - 2h30 - 65% Pupils can use a calculator for both papers. Paper 2 follows more short answer questions, whereas paper 4 follows structured, longer answer questions. COURSE OVERVIEW The IGCSE triple award science, is split into three different course codes, as separate biology, chemistry & physics assessments. TA students will follow the same principles as DA students, and they will sit the same paper 1 for the three sciences as the DA students. For TA, the content depth requirements are higher and therefore TA students will sit a further 3 assessments in each single science component. Overall, TA pupils will gain 3 IGCSE grades for their separate sciences. TA students are likely to go on to study their preferred science at higher level in IB.

COURSE OVERVIEW The IGCSE double award science qualification is a rigorous programme and one that we would expect the majority of our students to take. This course offers students teaching in biology, chemistry and physics and allows students to explore topics in depth. Students who take the double award science GCSE are equipped with a strong scientific background and we would expect these pupils to further their study of science, in one of the traditional sciences, at standard level in IB.

COURSE OVERVIEW The IGCSE single award science offers students the opportunity to gain one IGCSE certificate in science. It covers content for biology, chemistry and physics and it contains approximately half of the content of the double award course. The level of content is still the same as that of the double award, but this course allows students more time to study the set topics, by having less demand on content volume. Students who take the IGCSE single science would not be likely to take biology, chemistry or physics at IB level.

The IGCSE single award science is assessed with three different examination papers. In each exam there will be a mixture of different question styles, including multiple-choice, short-answer, calculations and extended open-response questions. MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES
As the world becomes more and more globalized, the demand for language speakers from companies is on the increase as they expand operations into new markets. These companies therefore need language speakers to satisfy the demands of their clients across the world. It is much easier to build a relationship with somebody when you speak the same language as them. You can simply connect with them on a more personal level and break through communication barriers if you speak the same language.

COURSE OVERVIEW The international AS level in Greek is felt to provide a sound background in essential skills for students intending to study Greek at I.B. The course involves the study of a variety of nonliterary and literary topics and texts, and students are required to complete reading and writing tasks using authentic sources. They are also examined in translation. Students read to demonstrate a sound knowledge of accurate grammar and syntax as well as an understanding of Greek culture and society. For the majority of our students, they will sit the Greek IAS course alongside their studies for Ellinomathia and they find that the IAS course complements their Ellinomathia preparation. Students who intend to study Greek at a higher level will benefit greatly from this course.

COURSE OVERVIEW The Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Business Studies syllabus develops learners' understanding of business activity in the public and private sectors, and the importance of innovation and change. Learners find out how the major types of business organisation are established, financed and run, and how their activities are regulated. Factors influencing business decision-making are also considered, as are the essential values of cooperation and interdependence. Learners not only study business concepts and techniques but also enhance related skills such as numeracy and enquiry.

COURSE OVERVIEW The Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) History syllabus looks at some of the major international issues of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as well as covering the history of particular regions in more depth. COURSE OVERVIEW Drama is an intellectual, practical and artistic subject that has its roots in exploration through improvisation. The intellectual strand is the way students use drama to explore issues, to think about their work and thus evaluate and develop it. The practical strand concerns the skills of improvisation, role-play and performance, whilst the artistic strand stimulates the students’ own creativity. This holistic approach values learning in and through drama, fostering in the pupils an awareness of issues and curriculum themes as well as matters related to their own lives. The IGCSE Physical Education assessment consists of: 50% practical (video based coursework) Paper 1 - 1h45 - 50% Pupils are examined on their theoretical understanding and application in human physiology, sports psychology and sociology. NON ASSESSED SUBJECTS COURSE OVERVIEW
During KS4, students are required to take a number of courses, as set out by the national curriculum for England & Wales, to help ensure a well rounded education. Pupils will, therefore, be timetabled to follow 1 period of PSHCE (personal, social, health & citizenship education), 2 periods of Physical Education as well as a 6 week, 2 period block of non-assessed ICT skills.
PSHCE
During Y10 & Y11, pupils will follow the PSHCE syllabus that explores a number of topics. These topics are also carried through their form period and assembly time. The PSHCE syllabus follows the RSE and health education guidelines as outlined from the UK government. The full PSHCE course outline is available on the school website.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION During KS4, pupils will still be expected to complete a double period of physical education, to ensure they are meeting the requirements of physical exercise. This takes more of a social sports approach and we try to ensure students are being given a broad range of opportunities that meet their wants and needs.

NON ASSESSED SUBJECTS ICT SKILLS The ICT skills course takes place during a 6 week block in Year 10. During this time, all pupils are expected to follow the course which ensures computer literacy and competence in a range of computing skills, necessary for their development in school, university and the workplace. This course is delivered by members of our ICT and Computer Science department. All pupils must take this course, regardless of their IGCSE study options.
FORM PERIOD For one period per week, students will have a form period session. During this session, pupils will work with their form tutors to expand on topics covered as part of the PSHCE curriculum, as well as participate in discussions to enhance their experience at KS4. During KS4, each form will elect senate representatives, who will take pressing issues to the senate and work alongside members of senior management to create a positive, pupil focused change in the school. Form period also allows pupils the opportunity for form tutors to develop a strong pastoral bond with their tutees and assist with the understanding and preparation of essential study and examination skills. The form tutor should be the students' first point of contact regarding any academic or pastoral concerns.

EXTRA CURRICULAR AT KS4 NEW OPPORTUNITIES At KS4, the extra-curricular opportunities are increased and students are encouraged to enhance their academic experience by participating in a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. During Y10, students are given their first chance to participate in the IA bronze award, as well as senior debate and forensics competitions. The range of sporting activities continues to grow and the level of competition available for KS4 students is exceptionally high. Students have had the chance to compete at national and international sporting competitions, including the much loved Thessaloniki sports tournament at Anatolia College, as well as the senior Med Cup football competition help annually in Verona, Italy. Music & drama continue to fill the timetables of our senior students, with many opting into the Musical Theatre club, where they are able to work alongside seasoned professionals in the musical theatre industry.

THE WAY AHEAD THE NEXT STEPS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE IB DIPLOMA The IB Diploma Throughout Y11, all of our students will be given the opportunity to explore what lies ahead for them. Between form periods and PSHCE lessons, students are given guidance from IB students as well as our universities and careers counsellors to help them start thinking about their future. The natural progression for our students is onto the full IB diploma. Students must select 6 IB subjects, as well as taking compulsory Theory of Knowledge (TOK) lessons and Creativity, Action Service (CAS) sessions. In addition to this, diploma students must also complete a 4000 word extended essay on a topic of their choice, relating to one of their chosen subjects. Students must select 6 subjects from the following (subject to change) Group 1 Language A1: First Language, including the study of selections from world Literature Group 2 Language A2 or B: Second Modern Language Group 3 Individuals and Societies: History, Geography, Psychology, Business and Management, Economics Group 4 Experimental Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science Group 5 Mathematics: Mathematics HL, Mathematics SL, Mathematical Studies SL Group 6 Arts and Electives: Art/Design, Music, Theatre Arts, a third Modern Language, a second subject from group 3 or group 4 Award of the Diploma Each examined subject is graded on a scale of 1 (minimum) to 7 (maximum). The award of the diploma requires students to meet defined standards and conditions including a minimum total of 24 points and the satisfactory completion of the extended essay, Theory of Knowledge course (TOK) and CAS (creativity, action, service) activities.
