WELCOME TO DIGITAL LEARNING AT ST

CATHERINE’S

A message from Mr Dan Raymond, Director of Digital Technology

We are delighted to welcome your daughter to Upper 3 in September 2026. At St Catherine’s, digital technology is carefully designed to support learning, confidence and independence — never to distract from them.

Our Digital Technology team works closely with staff and students to ensure technology is purposeful, safe and supportive throughout your daughter’s school journey.

Technology at St Catherine’s is designed for learning first — and learning well.

NEW FOR 2026

INTRODUCING THE SURFACE PRO PROGRAMME

From September 2026, every U3 girl will be issued with a Microsoft Surface Pro as her school learning device.

St Catherine’s has been a 1:1 device school since 2014. Moving to the new 12” Surface Pro reflects our commitment to modern, flexible learning, while maintaining strong safeguarding and consistency.

The Surface Pro combines the best of a laptop and a tablet, supporting:

• Research and project work

• Handwritten and typed notes

• Organisation and exam preparation

With Windows 11 and full academic software, it enables rich learning alongside traditional classroom teaching.

One device. Many ways to learn.

A SCHOOL-MANAGED DEVICE FOR PEACE OF MIND

Every Surface Pro is fully managed by the school. This means:

• All devices are configured, monitored and filtered

• No personal accounts are permitted

• No games, social media or recreational apps are permitted

Parents can feel confident that the device remains a tool for learning, both at school and at home.

LEASING SCHEME - HOW IT WORKS

To ensure reliability, value and fairness, Surface Pros are provided through a three-year school leasing arrangement.

Each device includes:

• Protective rubberised case

• House-colour travel sleeve

• Stylus

• Three-year damage repair policy

Cost: £140 per term, over nine terms (added to school bill)

Total: £1,260

TOTAL PAID: £1,260

Ownership transfers to you

The device remains the property of the school during the lease and transfers to you at the end of Upper 4.

LOOKING AHEAD

- GCSE YEARS

At the end of Upper 4 (2029), families may:

• Continue using the same Surface Pro if suitable

• Replace or upgrade via the school purchasing portal

This allows families to make thoughtful decisions just before the start of GCSE courses.

CHARGING, CARES & REPAIRS

Devices are charged overnight at home, with additional charging facilities available at school and in boarding houses. We recommend charging devices outside bedrooms overnight, supporting healthy routines and good rest.

The three-year repair policy covers accidental damage or device failure (with a £100 excess). Accessories are not included, and lost items must be replaced.

Learning to care for technology responsibly is part of our ICT policy.

Digital responsibility is part of growing independence.

GETTING STARTED IN SEPTEMBER

Surface Pros are issued in school at the start of term. Girls receive training to help them:

• Access school systems

• Organise work effectively

• Use approved academic apps

Tools like Microsoft OneNote allow girls to combine handwritten, typed and spoken notes seamlessly.

All girls sign the ICT policy, which sets clear expectations for responsible use throughout their time at school.

PERSONAL DEVICES

Boarders may keep a personal device for use in boarding houses outside lessons. Other personal devices should not be brought into school.

Many families find it helpful to maintain a clear distinction between school devices and personal technology at home.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why does the school provide the device rather than parents buying one?

Providing devices through school ensures consistency, strong safeguarding, reliable support, and excellent educational value.

Can my daughter install her own apps or games?

No. All devices are locked to school-approved apps only. This keeps the device focused on learning.

What happens if the device is damaged?

Accidental damage is covered by the three-year repair policy, with a £100 excess per claim.

What if the device is lost or stolen?

Loss or theft will incur a replacement charge. We encourage careful handling at all times.

Can the device be used after Upper 4?

Yes. Families may continue using the same device or choose to upgrade via the school portal.

Do boarders need a personal laptop as well?

Optional. Boarders may keep a personal device for nonacademic use in boarding houses, but it is not required.
