Sixth Form is a time of transformation - a chance to step into your potential, push boundaries, and shape the future with confidence. At St Catherine’s, we believe in academic excellence alongside teamwork, creativity, leadership, and character. These two years will challenge you, inspire you, and empower you to make a lasting impact in your chosen field. Your journey will be built around your interests and will help you discover your passions. A Levels will form the foundation, complemented by super-curricular studies, additional qualifications, and a rich array of extra-curricular experiences. Whether performing music, playing team sport, exploring the creative arts, leading initiatives, or immersing yourself in intellectual debate, you’ll have the space to excel and discover new strengths. Excellence is more than results - it’s a mindset. Here, we work hard, play hard, and lift each other up. Our Sixth Form students take an active role in shaping school life, embracing responsibility, and leading with kindness. The close relationships with staff foster mentorship and camaraderie that will stay with you long after you leave. With our modern Sixth Form Boarding House and Common Room, The 6 (p.14 - 15), all of you are welcome to experience the independence of pre-university independent living, balancing academic focus with social opportunities. These pages will give you a glimpse into Sixth Form life at St Catherine’s, a stage filled with challenge, joy, and lifelong connections. The next two years are about becoming the best version of yourself - and discovering just how far you can go.

Beyond academics, a diverse array of activities - from fundraising initiatives to filmmaking project - awaits your involvement. Existing friendships are strengthened and new ones forged. The Sixth Form offers greater independence, requiring you to take responsibility for managing your time effectively. As you progress into Upper 6, you will contribute increasingly to the running of the School and your House, affording you valuable leadership experience. These responsibilities will also position you as a role model for the younger girls. The Sixth Form tutor team will support you in subject specialist form groups, guiding you through the university application process and helping you plan for your future beyond St Catherine’s. Our consistently strong A Level results and the impressive array of university destinations achieved by our leavers each year stand as a testament to the academic excellence and supportive environment at St Catherine’s. For detailed information, please refer to the Destinations of Leavers (p.28 - 31) and our A Level results (p.27).

WELCOME
FROM THE HEADS OF SIXTH FORM
At St Catherine’s, students are not only prepared for university and careers, but inspired to become confident, compassionate leaders and innovators. In short, you will be ‘future ready.’
Isabel Cook and Catherine Peel Heads of Sixth Form

In the St Catherine’s Sixth Form, a girls-only environment removes the social pressures that can hold young women back, freeing them to lead every debate, captain every team, and take up space in all subjects without hesitation. Recent research continues to show that girls in single-sex settings are more likely to pursue traditionally maledominated fields and take on leadership roles, building the confidence that carries into university and beyond. With every prefect role, every new initiative, and every top grade won and championed by a girl, our students learn early that there’s no ceiling to what they can achieve. As they prepare for a world that still needs more women in boardrooms, science labs, and positions of power, our Sixth Form gives them the space to find that ambition first.
PROVEN BENEFITS OF AN ALL-GIRLS EDUCATION INCLUDE:
WHY GIRLS ONLY?
74% OF GIRLS STUDYING A STEM SUBJECT AT A LEVEL
STRONGER ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE
Resulting from girls feeling more confident in the classroom to be more assertive, take risks, and ask questions. Achievement is lauded and ability celebrated.
INCREASED CONFIDENCE
80% OF OUR AND SELF-BELIEF GIRLS REPRESENT Girls are able to focus on themselves and their potential, free from the constraints ST CAT’S of societal or cultural norms. They are encouraged to understand their strengths COMPETITIVELY and be proud of their achievements as their self-esteem is nurtured and IN A TEAM reinforced by their academic results. A 2024 global study by the International Coalition of Girls’ Schools and Stanford University’s Challenge Success found that girls’ school students and alumnae consistently report feeling more empowered to speak up and take the lead than their co-educated peers confidence that shows up in exam results too, according to 2025 GSA analysis of DfE and UCAS data.
TAILORED TEACHING
Girls work more collaboratively and thrive in discussion-led learning environments and as such we can make group debate, teamwork, and co-operation integral to teaching to enhance girls’ learning.
6
FREEDOM FROM GENDER STEREOTYPES
Girls make their subject choices based on their interests, bucking the national trend with 74% studying STEM subjects.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR LEADERSHIP
Leadership is not reserved for the few - every girl is encouraged to put herself forward for existing positions of responsibility, and just as importantly, to spot the gaps and create new ones. We give our students the space, the platform, and the confidence to turn their own ideas into something the whole school benefits from.
INSPIRATIONAL ROLEMODELS
Alumnae across all sectors generously share their time, providing insights and encouragement as the girls consider their own academic and professional aspirations.
SPORTING PARTICIPATION
Girls in girls’ schools have higher levels of sport participation, on average participating in 25% more PE in their curriculum, in comparison to girls, nationally. Here at St Catherine’s, 80% of girls aged 11 to 18 represent their school competitively in a team.
At St Catherine’s, we know that the transition from school to university and work is important, that’s why we’ve created The 6, a dynamic space designed exclusively for our Sixth Form girls.
WHY GIRLS ONLY?
Here, every double study bedroom honours a trailblazing woman whose story of impact - from social to political change - inspires our students to forge their own paths in the academic world and beyond.
The 6 was designed by IID Architects, with alumna boarder Helen Whateley (Year of 2006) leading the process, and creating a design which has enhanced community cohesion. With Lower and Upper 6 together, the year groups support each other, encourage each other as Prefects, and even share revision tips!

WHY CHOOSE ST CAT’S? We can list the reasons why St Catherine’s offers the very best Sixth Form experience but that won’t give you the whole story. Excellent examination results and outstanding facilities are tangible factors but what about the fundamental ethos and values which underpin the Sixth Form? House spirit is both unquantifiable and unthinkable without the leadership and energy the Sixth Form girls provide. It is hard to see where else you would find such a close-knit community resulting in events such as the student-led Sixth Form Musical and the Fashion and Talent Show. The Sixth Form at St Catherine’s provides an exciting launch pad for your future.

ELEANOR AND MEGAN, HEAD GIRLS 26-27
Being part of the Sixth Form at St Catherine’s has genuinely been one of the most rewarding experiences of our time at school. The independence and trust that come with studying subjects we truly enjoy create an exciting transition towards greater freedom and responsibility, while the nurturing community ensures every student feels supported. Sixth Form is not only a time to grow academically, but also an opportunity to embrace new experiences, develop confidence, and build lasting friendships. A particular highlight is the opportunity to focus on the subjects we love. Smaller class sizes and supportive teachers enable strong student–teacher relationships, creating an environment in which we feel both challenged and encouraged. Beyond A Levels, we enrich our studies through independent reading, super curricular opportunities such as the MFL cooking competition with RGS and the GAIN Investment Challenge. We have particularly enjoyed being part of the fundraising boards, organising events including the annual Fashion and Talent Show and discos with RGS while raising money for important causes. Working on the Lower 6 production of Frozen has been another highlight. Bringing the musical to life as a year group, from directing and choreographing to marketing and managing finances, was both challenging and hugely rewarding. The leadership, teamwork, and creativity involved made the experience incredibly special. We also love the facilities in The 6 and the SHLib (Speech Hall Library). The 6 provides a welcoming space where boarders and
day girls naturally come together, whether for a quick catchup between lessons or a chance to unwind after a busy day. In contrast, the SHLib offers a calm and focused environment for independent study. Having both spaces allows us to strike the perfect balance between work and relaxation.
WHY CHOOSE ST CAT’S?
FROM THE HEAD GIRLS
“ Whether we’re studying, leading, performing, or fundraising, Sixth Form offers opportunities to challenge ourselves and discover new passions. ” Being among the oldest students in the school brings opportunities to take on leadership roles, whether as House Captains, Games Captains, Drama or Dance Prefects, or subject mentors. The application process develops professionalism and confidence, while the roles allow us to help shape the wider school community. Both of us are incredibly excited for what lies ahead. With our new Heads of Sixth Form bringing fresh ideas and guidance, we already feel supported as we begin thinking about life after school. The introduction of EPQs (Extended Project Qualifications) is another exciting development, giving students the opportunity to explore subjects that genuinely interest them while preparing for university and beyond. Ultimately, the inspiring and supportive environment at St Catherine’s is helping every student develop the confidence, skills, and resilience needed for the future.
9
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
You will enjoy the benefit of working with highly qualified staff who are prepared to go the extra mile to help you. St Catherine’s staff are experts in teaching girls. We also work very hard to tailor the timetable to fit your dreams and future plans, not the other way around. Although one of the largest independent Sixth Forms in the area, class sizes are small to ensure your teachers know you, allowing them the time to provide the extra attention you need, whether in the classroom or in assessing your work and giving you meaningful feedback. St Catherine’s Sixth Form girls are bright and have high aspirations, creating an exhilarating climate which fosters intellectual curiosity, develops confidence, and creates a joy in learning. At St Catherine’s you do not need to feel embarrassed about enjoying your subjects! Everyone has high aspirations. Our results are recognised nationally. 69% of St Catherine’s girls go to Oxbridge or Russell Group universities. 9% choose overseas colleges and universities and 22% non-Russell Group universities and Music and Drama conservatoires. In addition, The 6 at St Catherine’s was recognised as a community as the winner of The Boarding Schools’ Association ‘Supporting Excellence’ Awards 2022.
A SIXTH FORM JUST FOR GIRLS
WHY CHOOSE ST CAT’S?
We believe this is important. Why? Because it creates an environment where girls can take academic risks and make mistakes along the way without fear of assumptions being made that are gender based, and where there is no shame in working hard or being successful. It also supports a ‘can-do’ philosophy. Girls hold all the senior positions at St Catherine’s; all the scientists are girls; all the mathematicians are girls. There is no subject area or activity in which girls do not excel here.
HOUSE SYSTEM
The House system plays a fundamental role at St Catherine’s. As a Sixth Former, you will play your part in running your House, gaining valuable, transferable skills, and enjoying the many House competitions and events. St Catherine’s Sixth Formers experience genuine roles of responsibility and leadership with proper job descriptions which make a real difference and to which the younger girls aspire. Head Girls, House Captains, and no fewer than 27 prefect positions are pivotal. It is hard to imagine the school could run so effectively without this input.
OPPORTUNITIES
St Catherine’s offers a raft of opportunities, inside and outside the classroom, and via our long-established and highly regarded House system. When it is time to complete your personal statement for UCAS or any other applications, you will be pleased you chose St Catherine’s because your active participation in Sport, Music, Drama, outdoor pursuits, and charity work will make your application stand out. Moreover, you will all have had the opportunity to lead and take responsibility. As a result, you will develop those ‘soft skills’ which will benefit you in all sorts of ways at university and later in the world of work. Girls appreciate the advice and support they receive throughout their university applications and, for those who decide to take a gap year, that help continues until you reach your chosen next step and later in the world of work.
10
LIBRARIES
As well as books supporting curriculum teaching, there is a particular focus on providing extended reading material and students are encouraged to read around their subjects to support their studies and help them decide on their university courses. A regularly updated range of fiction titles is also available to support reading for pleasure. The Library takes a selection of resources, online and paper, including JStor for Schools, A Level Review Magazines, The Economist, History Today, and New Scientist. Our Senior School Librarian, Mrs Roberts, is available to help with literature searching, referencing, and all aspects of using the library resources. You can access the Oliver Library system on any device in School or at home - an excellent resource.
SUPERB FACILITIES
You will enjoy access to everything you could possibly need to make your next two years a success: an attractive and dedicated Sixth Form Library, with full access to fast broadband and plenty of sockets for mobile devices, and a modern Common Room and kitchen in The 6. You will also have a state-of-theart sports and performance space - the Anniversary Halls and plenty of resources, from books to computers, to ensure you have everything you need to be an effective learner and communicator in the 21st century. Extensive grounds and attractive green spaces add to the mix, making our Sixth Form a wonderful environment for your next two years.
RESOURCES
In addition to the Speech Hall Library, your study centre, the Senior School Library provides excellent support for Sixth Form students.

A QUIET SPACE FOR REFLECTION
The Chapel at St Catherine’s offers a quiet place for reflection and contemplation in an otherwise busy environment and is always open for the staff and students. All Sixth Formers attend a short weekly morning Chapel Service conducted by our Chaplain, Rev’d Dr McNair Scott. The girls are able to take an active part in the service - such as giving the reading, leading prayers, playing music, and on occasion giving an address. Baptism and Confirmation are also offered every year.
STUDENT PROFILE
NATALIE A LEVELS Classical Civilisation English Photography
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR A LEVELS?
I chose my A Levels based on what I enjoyed at GCSE. I took Ancient Greek and Art at GCSE, and this led to me choosing Classical Civilisation and Photography at A Level. The A Level tasters which we did in Upper 5 really helped me to get a better idea of what I would enjoy. The teachers in each department were supportive and were able to help me choose the A Levels which I have enjoyed studying the past two years.
WHAT HAVE YOUR A LEVELS TAUGHT YOU IN TERMS OF THE SKILLS YOU HAVE DEVELOPED? In Drama, I’ve been encouraged to become more creative as well as being able to explore plays analytically, both of which will help me in the future, working backstage in theatre. I have developed skills in researching and discussing a wide range of topics, texts and ideas. My A Levels were useful as I was able to study what I was interested in while figuring out what I want to do after school using my interests.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT THAT HAS MOST SURPRISED YOU?
I’ve learnt, through the opportunities in Sixth Form, how to become more confident in myself. This has really surprised me as when starting Sixth Form, I didn’t consider all the other skills I would gain which aren’t academic. I have had public speaking opportunities which were initially daunting but have been useful. The smaller class sizes in Sixth Form have been beneficial in increasing my confidence and encouraging discussion.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM? I’ve been part of the tech crew for many school productions such as Les Misérables and Grease. I have learnt so much from this experience and been able to work with so many incredible people. I want to pursue this passion by studying Technical Theatre at university. The extracurriculars at St Cat’s have allowed me to find something I love and work on some incredible productions. I have also been involved with a range of other opportunities such as Young Enterprise, several symposiums, and essay competitions all of which have allowed me to explore my interests in a range of exciting ways.
WHERE ARE YOU HEADING AFTER ST CAT’S?
I’m going to London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) to study Production Arts for the Stage and Screen. I’m super excited for the next steps and have felt supported by the staff at St Cat’s throughthe whole application process.
IF YOU COULD LEAVE A POST-IT NOTE FOR A NEW LOWER 6, WHAT WOULD IT SAY? My advice to anyone joining Lower 6 would be to say ‘yes’ to new opportunities and not be afraid to push yourself outside your comfort zone. You never know where trying something new might lead, and you may well discover a new passion or talent along the way.

BOARDING Sixth Form boarders are fully immersed in life at St Catherine’s, enjoying the perfect balance of work, rest and play. The Sixth Form Boarding House, The 6, is led by Mrs Anna McGarry, supported by a House Parent and a dedicated team of House Tutors who create a welcoming environment where every student feels at home from the moment she arrives.
morning until late evening, while students can choose to work either in their rooms or in the Speech Hall Library (SHLib), which remains open during evenings and weekends.
A HOME FROM HOME
BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Boarding is a popular choice for both existing students and girls joining us from across the UK and around the world. It offers an ideal transition between school and university, combining greater independence with the support and structure needed to build confidence and prepare for life beyond school.
FRIENDSHIP AND COMMUNITY
When asked what they value most, our boarders consistently highlight the friendships they form and the strong sense of community they experience. As part of a thriving boarding community of around 165 girls, students enjoy a school that remains vibrant long after lessons have ended. Weekly social events, including the everpopular Open House, help foster a sense of belonging, while weekends bring a varied programme of trips, activities, fixtures, performances and rehearsals.
MAKING THE MOST OF EVERY DAY
Boarding offers significant practical advantages. Living on campus removes the daily commute, creating more time to study, relax, and participate fully in school life. Outstanding sports, drama, music, and art facilities are available from early
14
With everything conveniently located on campus, boarders can balance academic commitments with sports training, rehearsals, lectures, concerts, and art sessions. Boarders enjoy access to the fitness suite, swimming pool, and squash court during the evenings, helping them maintain a healthy balance between study and wellbeing. St Catherine’s is much more than an 8.30am -4pm school. Students can swim before lessons, spend time in the Sixth Form Art Studio after school, and enjoy having everything they need within easy reach. The 6, our contemporary Sixth Form boarding house, offers modern accommodation designed specifically for older students. At its heart is a spacious Common Room, where boarders and day students can relax, recharge, and socialise throughout the day. After a match, rehearsal, or study session, there is nothing better than sharing tea, hot chocolate, and toast with friends on the sofa. With spacious twin study bedrooms, modern bathrooms and excellent communal facilities, The 6 provides a genuine home-from-home experience in which students thrive both academically and socially.

STUDENT PROFILE
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR A LEVELS?
A LEVELS
French German Psychology
I chose French and German because I have always loved the experience of stepping into a different world through language. I enjoy the logic of language learning and the achievement of communicating with people from different backgrounds. Psychology was completely new to me at A Level, which made it exciting, and I particularly enjoyed exploring why people think and behave in different ways. Together, these subjects gave me a balance of variety and challenge.
WHAT HAVE YOUR A LEVELS TAUGHT YOU IN TERMS OF THE SKILLS YOU HAVE DEVELOPED? Studying languages has helped me become a more confident communicator, while learning about different cultures has broadened my perspective on the world. Psychology has developed my analytical skills and encouraged me to look at different viewpoints before reaching a conclusion. Across all three subjects, I have also become more organised and independent, learning how to balance coursework, revision and other commitments while working towards long-term goals.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT THAT HAS MOST SURPRISED YOU?
One of the biggest surprises has been how much my subjects overlap. At the start of Sixth Form, I viewed languages and Psychology as completely separate disciplines. However, I gradually realised that they are closely connected. Studying Psychology showed me how culture influences behaviour, while language learning demonstrated how communication shapes our understanding of the world. This overlap has given me a deeper appreciation of both subjects and highlighted the value of approaching issues from different perspectives.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM?
Duke of Edinburgh Awards were particularly memorable, developing my resilience, teamwork and independence. Volunteering and work experience in a church café and charity shop also built my confidence and interpersonal skills. In Hamburg, I lived with a host family, attended language school and worked in an ice cream parlour, improving my German and experiencing the culture first-hand. I also organised a full-time internship at a real estate agency in Méribel, France, assisting with office administration and property visits. This strengthened my language skills and professional confidence.
WHERE ARE YOU HEADING AFTER ST CAT’S? After St Catherine’s, I am reading French at Swansea University.
IF YOU COULD LEAVE A POST-IT NOTE FOR A NEW LOWER 6, WHAT WOULD IT SAY?
Remember to make time for the activities and interests you enjoy outside of your studies. They are just as important for your personal development and wellbeing. I would also encourage you to be proactive in your learning. Ask questions, seek support when needed, and take advantage of the knowledge and encouragement that your teachers are always willing to provide.
16
CHOOSING YOUR A LEVEL SUBJECTS
If you are already a St Catherine’s student, as well as information from the respective Heads of Department, you will have a 1-2-1 chat with a senior member of staff during Upper 5 (Year 11) who will offer you specific advice and guidance. Ask students already studying the subjects you are considering taking, as well as friends and family. Make sure, however, that the information is as up to date and accurate as possible. Focus on subjects you most enjoy and in which you are most successful or try out a completely new subject, having first used the Taster Lessons (Autumn Term of Upper 5) to identify which of the ‘new to Sixth Form’ subjects you prefer. Trust our team of highly experienced Heads of Department, many of them experienced examiners, who have chosen the approach that best suits their students and helps them gain the right outcomes at the end of the Upper 6 year.
YOUR A LEVEL JOURNEY
There is lots of flexibility at St Catherine’s over the choice of subjects, enabling you to specialise in those you most enjoy and at which you are most successful. If you do have a specific career in your sights, then bear this in mind when you make your choices. If you do not, do not panic. You are almost certainly in the majority at this stage, which is absolutely fine! We do emphasise, however, that study in the Lower 6 year is very important and the material is all part of the linear A Level which will be taken at the end of Upper 6. It is never too early to start finding out more about your potential A Level subjects and trying to glean as much information as you can.
In making your subject choices, you will find a great deal of advice on hand, both if you are a current student or an applicant for a place at St Catherine’s. Just ask us.
HOUSE STUDY/SUBJECT CLINICS
Alongside several scheduled non-contact periods, from Tuesday to Friday, a supervised House Study period of 30 minutes allows you to begin your prep in the Speech Hall Library or your boarding bedroom, or access subject clinics. If appointed as a Subject Mentor, you may also be asked to help lead in clinics and assist younger girls, consolidating your own subject knowledge and confidence as you do so. Subject Mentors particularly enjoy this opportunity to develop their higher order thinking skills and learn more through teaching.

EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION (EPQ)
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a Level 3 qualification, equivalent to half an A Level and worth up to 28 UCAS points. It allows students to choose a topic they’re passionate about, conduct independent research, and produce either: •
A 5,000-word report, or
•
A creative artefact (e.g. architectural drawing, design, computer game, illustrated cookery book) with a shorter report.
The benefits of the EPQ include developing your research and writing skills and time management, presentation practice, the opportunity to explore your passion, prep for university life, a sense of ownership of your project, a boost in UCAS points, lower entry requirements at some universities, and making your personal statement stand out.
DESIGN ENGINEERING - LOTUS SEVEN PROJECT
This super curricular course will see a group of students building a car! In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Lotus Cars developed the ‘Seven’, a two-seater racing car. In the 1970s, Lotus transferred the rights to continue production to Caterham Cars and, to this day, the ‘Seven’ is still extremely popular to build as a kit car for use on the track and the road. This course will provide the opportunity to gain some handson experience of the technical build of a Westfield sports car. Whilst constructing the car, we will take the time to consider the materials, mechanics, suspension geometry, engine and gearbox technology. This course is only suitable for those considering engineering and science-based courses at degree level.
ENHANCING YOUR EXPERIENCE
Students will follow a taught skills programme which teaches all the basics about how to develop a narrowly focused title which will facilitate analysis of an issue to come to a successful conclusion. They will then learn how to research this, reference it properly, and produce a clearly structured and articulate essay, or produce the artefact, within the timeframe.
FINANCE
Finance Fundamentals is a comprehensive and practical super curricular course designed to help you develop valuable life skills, prepare for further study in Economics or Business, and build a strong foundation for a successful career in Finance. The course introduces key financial concepts such as saving, borrowing, and banking, alongside more advanced topics like fund management, foreign exchange (FOREX), equities, bonds, and financial markets. You will also explore the importance of ethics, integrity, and professionalism within the Financial Services industry. Combining theory with real-world application, this engaging programme equips you with practical financial understanding and analytical skills. The course concludes with the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (CISI) Level 2 qualification, assessed through a one-hour multiple-choice examination. 19

OXBRIDGE APPLICATIONS AND MEDICINE, VETERINARY MEDICINE, DENTISTRY, OR LAW
Girls considering Oxbridge and specialist subjects need to demonstrate interest in the ‘super-curriculum’, in other words, research that is undertaken independently, for example through attendance at local or virtual evening lectures, participation in external essay competitions, and their own focused, independent reading. We run an Oxbridge Day in Activities Week and applicants will have an Oxbridge Mentor to help prepare them for interviews, review their academic work, develop their knowledge, and source work experience. For Medics there is a Medical Reading Club and MedSoc. We are adept at managing the need to meet earlier application deadlines and support girls with Admissions Tests such as UCAT, as well as helping them to make appropriate choices of medical school.

Recent alumnae have chosen to continue their studies at BIMM Music Institute, Central Saint Martins, LAMDA, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Royal Academy of Music, Fine Art at UAL, and Trinity Laban. Our team can guide you through preparing portfolios, mock interviews, auditions, repertoire, and more. For organ scholarship applications, the Head of Organ Studies and the Director of Music provide guidance with preparation for auditions and the very early application process demanded.
LIFE BEYOND ST CATHERINE’S
AUTUMN TERM ◦
The Sixth Form Tutor Team has experience of supporting girls in applications to the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Australia and Europe. For the US we advise on SATs and personal essays, entry requirements, funding, and visas and support girls fully with the administrative side of the process, which can be complex.
For those girls who have chosen to have a gap year, we will provide the same level of support to them on the application process but with known A Level results. We communicate frequently, in particular in the autumn at the time applications are submitted.

DEGREE APPRENTICESHIPS
I really like how many opportunities there are in Sixth Form to take on roles of responsibility. All students have the opportunity to take on a prefect/leadership role. Everyone really comes into their own and it is such a good way to develop and grow as a person. GRACE
Lasting for four or five years, a degree apprenticeship allows you to study for a degree while working. You gain work experience, earn a salary and can graduate debt-free, giving a different ‘university’ experience. We will help you consider this route with the ever-increasing number of highly reputable companies offering this option, including Dentons LLP, Dyson, IBM, PWC, Unilever, and the Bank of England. Alumna Ellie Speight (2018) has been a visiting speaker on her Business Degree Apprenticeship with Ernst & Young (EY), as has Antonia Cook (2021) who has spoken about her Degree Apprenticeship with Mercedes Benz.

Future careers are impossible to anticipate precisely, so we equip students with the skills they need to embrace new opportunities and become future-ready.
LIFE BEYOND ST CATHERINE’S
The whole St Catherine’s experience contributes to employability, recognising what employers are looking for: teamwork, leadership, creativity, adaptability, communication, problem-solving, and more. These invaluable attributes are developed through Prefect roles, the completely studentled Lower 6 Musical, coaching younger girls in sports and academics, and public speaking opportunities, to name but a few. With these strengths, our students leave education ready to enter their chosen workplace and able to adapt to what the future has in store. Our comprehensive careers education programme allows our students to take ownership of their own decision-making about their future pathways and careers. They develop self-awareness and research skills to explore their personal interests, culminating in aspirational and exciting choices. Sixth Formers are invited to a variety of careers events, both in and out of school. The breadth of careers support is enhanced by active involvement of members of the St Catherine’s Association Community. On the next page are some of our most recent Careers events and resources to illustrate the access you will have to ideas, inspiration, knowledge, and networks to support you as you plan your future.

INSIGHT INTO INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT
This London-based event gives you the chance to explore investment banking careers and take part in interactive workshops, putting your negotiation skills to the test on the trading floor and sharing your views on ‘breaking the bias’ in the finance industry. Students also have the opportunity to take part in the GAIN (Girls Are Investors) Investment Challenge – a national challenge that pairs teams with an external mentor from the investment world to support them in analysis, preparation of a stock pitch, and the writing of a detailed report. This is a valuable opportunity to gain real world experience of investment management.
PREPARING FOR LIFE BEYOND ST CAT’S
As part of the Futures-Sixth programme we teach students about what employers are looking for and how to correlate their School experience - be it in leadership, teamwork, sports, or debating - to skill sets they have learnt that they can bring to an employer. Strategic career planning is considered, from building a professional digital profile to finding and using mentors, creating networks, and securing training.

Leaders have successfully created opportunities for girls to connect with a network of over 8,500 former and current parents, staff and alumnae. This network is a powerful tool that is actively utilised to benefit the current girls with access to Uni Buddies and extensive career connections, mentoring and guidance.

LIFE BEYOND ST CATHERINE’S
By joining St Catherine’s, you will automatically become a member of the St Catherine’s Association Community of over 8,500 members, and benefit from a community committed to supporting each other in the world of work. The community is active, with alumnae and parents helping current girls to research universities, explore career opportunities, secure internships or find work experience and refine their networking and communication skills.
A NETWORK THAT WORKS FOR YOU!
During your Sixth Form years, you can expect to hear talks from several alumnae and parents sharing their career paths, with the opportunity to ask questions of them. You will be able to ask advice on work experience, the skill sets they found beneficial in their careers, global opportunities, and more. Recent talks have included alumnae now working as a Zoologist at the BBC, a Senior Associate at PWC, a PHD student at UCL researching cancer drugs, an HSBC Asset Manager, a Human Rights Barrister, and a Sotheby’s contemporary art specialist. The breadth and depth of our Association Community is an incredible asset at your fingertips and will be available for you for life when you leave School. Your Association Community will help you with:
UNIVERSITY PREPARATION
Most girls in Sixth Form take advantage of our Uni Buddies Scheme. We connect girls with alumnae currently at university so they can ask questions about colleges, halls, courses, and university life. This can really help with making your UCAS application, e.g. Grace was interested in studying Geography
26
at Exeter and we linked her with Sophie (2022) who gave her a personal tour. Bella wanted to know about Dentistry, so we linked her to Anni (2011) who is a qualified BUPA Dentist and a specialist in Sports Dentistry, so she could ask about Dentistry courses at different universities.
ONE-TO-ONE PARENT & ALUMNAE CONTACT IN CAREER SPECIFIC AREAS Practical and helpful! For example, Emma was interested in a career in film and we connected her to four alumnae so she could research options, while Isabella was interested in a career in the Civil Service so we linked her to Flora (2014), a Policy Advisor at HM Treasury, to discuss the Fast Track graduate scheme.
NETWORKING SKILLS
We run a special group called The London Network for alumnae aged 25-35. Sixth Formers can apply to attend these events. The purpose of The London Network is to broaden career options and aspirations by allowing parents and alumnae to network and share industry experience. Sixth Form attendees have the chance to grow in self-confidence and make links for future benefit amongst the parents and alumnae that attend. Upcoming London Network events with guest speakers include: •
Finding your Feet in London
•
How AI will affect my Career
•
How to be an Effective Communicator
The Association Community is there for you during your Sixth Form, throughout your career, and all of your life.

The Association Community is a valuable resource for St Catherine’s students during their time at School and afterwards.
The team is able to connect students to alumnae who are enrolled at, or are graduates of, universities that they may be interested in, and who provide them with guidance and interview preparation if needed. Additionally, the Association Community assists former students in finding internships through the network of St Catherine’s alumnae. I have found this network to be of much help when seeking out work experience opportunities in the field of politics and social justice. NOOR
The school’s greatest strength is the sense of confidence it imbues in its pupils.
St Catherine’s girls leave School with a sense that there is nothing they cannot do or achieve if they put their mind to it. Whether in sport, studies, music, or drama, they are taught to aim high and believe in themselves. MRS THOMPSON, PARENT

STUDENT PROFILE
EMILY A LEVELS
German History Mathematics
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR A LEVELS?
I really enjoyed German and History at GCSE and when I was thinking through different A Level combinations I realised I was really excited thinking about studying them in more depth. I knew that I wanted to continue with Maths as well since I like that it’s a contrast; I also wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after Sixth Form and I liked the idea of having a language, essay subject, and Maths.
WHAT HAVE YOUR A LEVELS TAUGHT YOU IN TERMS OF THE SKILLS YOU HAVE DEVELOPED?
Time management, since my subjects are so different (which I really like); it was sometimes hard to balance how long I spent on each, particularly with History as such a content heavy subject. My research skills have also developed through doing History coursework and the individual research project in German.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT THAT HAS MOST SURPRISED YOU?
I’ve learned that it is really important to balance academics with sport, music, and time with friends. I like being busy, although I did learn throughout Sixth Form what my limits are and when to scale things back.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM?
Doing Model UN in Lower 6 was my first experience in public speaking and I really enjoyed doing the Wycombe Abbey conference. The Sixth Form expedition to Tanzania was also such an incredible opportunity and I am really happy that I completed my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award as well. I also arranged to go on a language course in Lower 6 and stayed with a guest family which was a very valuable experience.
IF YOU COULD LEAVE A POST-IT NOTE FOR A NEW LOWER 6, WHAT WOULD IT SAY? Sixth Form can be one of the busiest and most stressful times of your school life, but it is also a time when there are so many opportunities open to you, so I would say really try and take every opportunity you can. Remember that everyone doesn’t have their life all sorted out; everyone is still figuring things out and Sixth Form is such an amazing community so remember you’re not alone!
WHERE ARE YOU HEADING AFTER ST CAT’S? I am going to study German and Italian ab initio (from beginners’ level) at the University of Cambridge.

ENRICHMENT Sport is an integral part of life at St Catherine’s and we are proud of our outstanding reputation in competitive sport. Our pupils consistently achieve success at national level in lacrosse, swimming, netball, cross country, and athletics, with many gaining national representative honours across a range of disciplines. We are proud to field five senior lacrosse teams and four senior netball teams, all competing at the highest standards.
We are fortunate to have exceptional facilities, including a fully equipped Fitness Suite, a five-lane swimming pool, a large Sports Hall, a Dance Studio, gymnastics area, trampolines, a squash court, six netball courts, four lacrosse pitches, and a 400m grass athletics track. In the Sixth Form, Tuesday afternoons are dedicated to Senior Games - a valuable opportunity to step away from academic study, stay active, and enjoy a wide variety of sports. Students can choose from netball, lacrosse, swimming, tennis, yoga, squash, badminton, trampolining, football, and fitness sessions. They can explore individual interests or try something new. We are very happy to include new sports whenever there is a desire. Our House system also offers friendly inter-House competitions and additional opportunities to be involved in sport at all levels.
“At St Catherine’s, sport is about more than physical fitness - it’s about building confidence, resilience, developing leadership, fostering a healthy competitive spirit, and forming lifelong friendships.” To find out more about sport at St Catherine’s, please contact: sport@stcatherines.info
MUSIC
In the Sixth Form there is a vast range of opportunities to continue singing or playing your instrument, or to try something new. You can use skills already learned and take part in a number of musical ensembles such as Symphony Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and Camerata (our senior string ensemble). However, if you prefer to be part of a small group, there are chamber groups and smaller ensembles that you can join. There are four choirs open to the Sixth Form: Senior Choir (non-auditioned), Chapel Choir (for boarders, nonauditioned), Senior Chamber Choir (auditioned), and Cantores (auditioned), with Cantores being made up of a small number of the best choral singers from Lower 5 to Upper 6. There really is something for everyone at all levels, and you will quickly make a lot of good friends in the Music Department!
ENRICHMENT
SPORT AT ST CATHERINE’S
We have around 40 music staff and offer individual lessons in a wide range of instruments and singing. Some students decide to take up a new instrument in the Sixth Form; many continue with instrumental lessons that they have been taking for years and some even work towards higher level exams such as diplomas. We are happy to teach at all levels, and there is no obligation to take exams if you do not want to.
“ This may be your moment to take up a new instrument. ” There are lots of performance opportunities, with many informal and sectional concerts for all styles of music across contemporary and traditional genres. The Gala Concert in November sees our choirs and large ensembles showcase their hard work, and we enjoy other large concerts such as the Association Concert (a large choir of adults and students accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra) in the Spring Term, and our Summer Concerts towards the end of the academic year. In the Sixth Form, you may have the opportunity to lead 33

There are also opportunities to perform in a Pit Orchestra for School productions, including the Lower 6 Musical. If you would like to find out more about what is on offer in the Music Department, whether that might be opportunities to perform as a soloist or in choirs and ensembles, our range of concerts, or individual music lessons, please contact Matthew Greenfield, Director of Music. music@stcatherines.info To see the full Music Calendar for 2026-27 please scan the QR code.
JENNIFER BATE MEMORIAL ORGAN SCHOLARSHIP
This is an exciting and valuable opportunity for a girl who plays the organ and would like to develop her all-round performance expertise. The late Dr Jennifer Bate was an internationally acclaimed organist and a world authority on organ music, as well as a great friend of St Catherine’s. Throughout her life she was committed to helping and encouraging young women organists and gladly gave her name to our scholarship which is open to any student who meets our academic standards for Sixth Form entry and who can show she has the potential to maximise her talents through this Scholarship, which is awarded in conjunction with Guildford Cathedral. For further details please contact Matthew Greenfield, Director of Music. music@stcatherines.info
A full bursary place may be available to support the Scholarship. Attendance at the annual Jennifer Bate Organ Academy, a residential course for young women organists hosted at St 34
Catherine’s each April, may help you explore this option. Please see the website for further details stcatherines.info/JBOA
SIXTH FORM MUSICAL
One of the real highlights of the Sixth Form years is the Sixth Form Musical. This is directed, musically directed, produced, and choreographed, as well as performed, by members of the Lower 6 after their summer examinations. The production in 2026 was Frozen. Past productions have included Grease, The Little Mermaid, Annie, High School Musical, Beauty and the Beast, Legally Blonde, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying, and The Producers. Each successive year group takes lasting memories away from these performances, which are entirely student-led.
BUSINESS ENTERPRISE
Lower 6 students have the opportunity to set up and run their own company through the St Catherine’s Business Enterprise Programme. Students elect their own management team and allocate roles and responsibilities, design and produce a product of their own, raise start-up finance and, finally, wind up the business, producing an end of year balance sheet and profit and loss account. They then donate their profit to a charity of their choosing. The programme is designed to be run over a School year and, in this time, students improve their understanding of enterprise and business whilst learning to work collaboratively. Typically, students meet once a week and there are regular sessions from teachers and experienced business and marketing professionals on the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed to excel in the competitive, entrepreneurial world of today.
If you are interested in cooking and would like to learn to cook at a very impressive level, you might like to sign up for the Culinary Arts cookery course. The course runs most Monday evenings during term-time from January in the Lower 6 to the end of October in the Upper 6. This takes place in our Culinary Arts Studio, opened in September 2022, which offers facilities that you would expect to see in a professional kitchen; think MasterChef! The course is charged as an extra, and is run by Mr Philip Friend, Head of Food and Nutrition and a finalist on BBC1’s Best Home Cook (2018). The course focuses on high end cooking and covers a variety of cuisines and skills. You will make many exciting dishes, learn many new skills, and have a lot of fun in the process. Further information about the course will be sent out early in the Autumn Term.
DISCUSSION AND DEBATE
There are many occasions throughout your Sixth Form years to get involved in talking about all sorts of issues. In Debating Club, there are plenty of opportunities for internal and external combative British Parliamentary style debates, whilst maintaining regular friendly debates with other schools. Our modern linguists also debate in French, German, and Spanish. There is also an active Model United Nations Club. Eminent speakers address the Sixth Form on important issues as a means of curricular enrichment, with plenty of time for challenging questions!

You will be offered the opportunity to take part in trips both close to home and further afield. Some are curriculum focused and will enable you to deepen your understanding and bring to
life a topic which you may only have been able to study from a book. Other trips will take you out of your comfort zone where you’ll tap hidden depths in your own personality. Here is a flavour of what we have offered recently:

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR A LEVELS?
I really struggled to choose my A Levels! I remember thinking that there were so many different choices that I would love to study. Ultimately, I knew that I wanted to study English and so, after some agonising, I asked myself what other subjects I had enjoyed most at GCSE and found the most manageable to revise. That lead me to choose History and Philosophy, Religion and Ethics (PRE), because their course content interested me the most. The interdisciplinary aspects of the courses allowed me to continue to explore areas I was also interested in, but did not chose for A Level, such as politics, classical civilisation, and drama.
WHAT HAVE YOUR A LEVELS TAUGHT YOU IN TERMS OF THE SKILLS YOU HAVE DEVELOPED?
Definitely time management - or maybe the art of a late-night essay. My writing style and those essay skills have developed significantly during my A Levels. There is plenty of support, especially at the start of the course, but often you don’t realise just how much you have improved until you stumble upon an old GCSE essay.
WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT THAT HAS MOST SURPRISED YOU?
One thing that surprised me was just how key discussion is to humanities A Levels. Coming from GCSE, I hadn’t expected that we would have so much more time for these conversations. Smaller class sizes helped this process. For example, in History we discussed the parallels between the 1968 and 2024 election, in PRE, the application of Natural Law theory to subjects such as abortion and euthanasia. For me, this is one the best parts of A Level – these discussions. They remind you that ‘facts’ do not exist in a vacuum confined to the A Level syllabus, but that your own perspective is central to understanding and engaging with the material.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU TAKEN ADVANTAGE OF OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM?
There are so many opportunities for leadership in the Sixth Form. I was lucky to be part of the directing team for our Lower 6 production, The Little Mermaid. I thoroughly enjoyed working together as a year. I also ran a debating club, where I introduced younger students to the fundamentals of debating and helped them build confidence in public speaking. In addition, a friend and I co-founded a student publication, where I served as editor-inchief last year. I’ve made the most of the opportunities for House involvement as well. Last year, I led our House Drama production, and this year I wrote and co-directed it.
IF YOU COULD LEAVE A POST-IT NOTE FOR A NEW LOWER 6, WHAT WOULD IT SAY?
I think the advice I would give is, ‘do it scared’. Sixth Form has been a genuinely positive experience. It’s exciting to explore courses and universities and begin imagining the path ahead, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. I have learned that just because something feels daunting, it doesn’t mean you are on the wrong path. Even on a smaller scale, some of my most rewarding moments came from pushing past that initial fear, whether it was auditioning for a play or starting a conversation with someone I didn’t yet know.

GIVING BACK The Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award is a very wellrespected and recognised achievement and you will enjoy an unforgettable experience as you pursue it. An impressive number of St Catherine’s girls complete this prestigious award which also stands out on your CV and university application, while being very rewarding for its own sake. For many of our alumnae, their DofE experiences are the topic of conversations for years! Many of our Sixth Form will have completed Bronze and Silver Awards before embarking on Gold, but we would be delighted to support you in your Gold journey if you are totally new to the Award.
CHARITY INVOLVEMENT
Raising money for good causes is a very important aspect of life at St Catherine’s, especially in the Sixth Form. There are three fundraising groups: the Charities Board, Community Board, and the Philanthropy Board. You may apply to become a member of these Boards which agree upon and organise a number of major events every year. The Charities Board is instrumental in organising events to raise money. The Sixth Form Christmas Ball and the Talent and Fashion Show are the major events which are run and organised by the committee members in the Lower 6 and Upper 6. The charities are nominated by the committee and you learn how to plan major events and allocate the jobs - from advertising to seating plans. The Philanthropy Board has organised the Father-Daughter Dinner and the younger years’ school disco. The Boards routinely raise several thousand pounds for good causes each year.
Running the Upper 3/Lower 4 disco as part of the Philanthropy Board, we raised over £2,000 for two charities that mean so much to me. One of the charities was Gosden House, where I volunteer, and seeing how excited they were to get all that money and how much it is going to help them made me so happy and is one of my proudest moments at St Catherine’s.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR A LEVELS?
I chose my A Levels according to my favourite subjects. I knew that I wanted to do something linked to space at university, so Physics and Maths felt like an obvious choice. Geography was a subject that I grew to love during GCSEs and so I also wanted to carry that on.
WHAT SKILLS HAVE YOU DEVELOPED?
Across all three subjects, my time management has really improved when trying to balance my coursework, revision, and homework, while also making room for down time.
WHAT SURPRISED YOU MOST?
I was most surprised by how interconnected my subjects were and how important all three are to solving real life problems such as climate change and space exploration.
WHAT OPPORTUNITIES HAVE YOU TAKEN OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM?
I have loved taking part in the extra-curricular activities such as Music which has let me have a more rounded experience at St Cat’s. Being a part of Green Cats also increased my love for earth science, which helped me choose what I wanted to do for university.
IF YOU COULD LEAVE A POST-IT NOTE FOR A NEW LOWER 6, WHAT WOULD IT SAY?
Work hard, but don’t let A Levels become your whole life. Taking care of yourself and enjoying your Sixth Form life is just as important as good grades.
WHERE ARE YOU HEADING NEXT? To study Physics with Space Science at Leicester.
