MINNESOTA SUPREME COURT
ANNE MCKEIG ’89, appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to serve on the Minnesota Supreme Court, was sworn in during a public investiture ceremony on September 15 at The O’Shaughnessy.
“To Governor Dayton, Chi Miigwetch (big thanks) for having faith in a young woman from Federal Dam — born, raised and Minnesota educated,” Justice McKeig said in her remarks. “You’ve made history in allowing me to be the first Native American woman appointed to the state’s highest court — in all of the United States. I’m prepared to demonstrate that your decision was one of great vision and wisdom, not because you chose me, but because you appreciate the role native nations have played in Minnesota’s history.” The Supreme Court now has a female majority for the first time since 1991. 1950–59 PAT SCALLEN SCHAEFER ’58 recently completed a book with her husband, Larry. Creating a Real School documents the creation and first 20 years of the Lake Country School in Minneapolis. Pat and Larry were co-principals until their retirement in 1996.
1960–69 MARY CATHERINE IZRAL, OSM, ’60 celebrated her 75th jubilee in 2016. Sister Mary Catherine entered religious life in 1939 and professed first vows in 1941.
MARY PAT FERRON CANES ’67 was elected to the board of the National League of American Pen Women, an organization for professional women in the arts.
MARIA NHAMBU ’67 (formerly Mary Rose Ryan) is publishing a three-volume memoir with editor Jacqueline Mosio ’67. Africa’s Child, released in April, tells Nhambu’s story of growing up in an orphanage in Tanzania; America’s Daughter, out spring 2017, begins with her years at St. Kate’s. Catherine Murray Mamer ’61 brought Nhambu to St. Kate’s, where she received a scholarship. More at stkate.edu/news-booktrio.
MARGARET ROGERS BARRETT ’68 launched her memoir, Called: The Making and Unmaking of a Nun, in May 2016. Three of the included stories won the Award for Creative Work from St. Kate’s Abigail Quigley McCarthy Center for Women.

MARIETHÉRÈSE REED ’71

1970–79 MARIE-THÉRÈSE REED ’71 was conferred the rank of Officier in the Ordre National du Mérite (Order of National Merit) on April 28 for her work in developing Franco-American friendship.
1980–89 LISA “WOOD” PALAS GRAHAM ’83 is managing director of operations for Agave Oaxaca LLC, an import and distribution firm in Seattle. She serves on the Board of Directors of Seattle Arts & Lectures, a nonprofit that champions the literary arts. She is also a member of the Capital Campaign Cabinet for Hugo House, a writers’ center.
MADELON NEWELL ALBERT ’86, MAT’87 retired in May. During her career, she served parishes in New Mexico, Georgia, Florida and Indiana. In addition, she taught high school theology classes and was a professor of world ethics at Purdue University North Central.
MARCIA MILLER ’89

MARCIA MILLER ’89 was promoted to partner at SiebenCarey. She works closely with the firm’s trial attorneys to prepare and respond to legal memoranda and briefs, and argue motions at all levels of litigation through the appellate process.
1990–99 JOAN PAULY SCHNEIDER MAT’90 operates a 40-acre retreat called Wellsprings Farm in Annandale, Minnesota.
ANGELINA O. MATEEGA ’92 is working for the U.S. Agency for International Development in Kampala, Uganda. She recently returned to St. Paul to visit with her friendship family from her time as a St. Kate’s student. BRIDGET SCHWARTZ-MANOCK ’92 was promoted to director of public affairs at the Central Arizona Water Conservation District in Phoenix.
CARRIE BARNES ROGERS ’96, 2M’99 received tenure and was promoted to associate professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at Western Carolina University.

CHRISTIAN HOUDEK Post-Bac Cert’08 is one of two recipients of a 2016 WEM Outstanding Educator Award for Teacher Achievement, which recognizes exemplary teachers who support, inspire and assist students to attain greater learning.
CHAYO SMITH ’08 completed basic combat training in the U.S. Army. She went on to Officer Candidate School, where she graduated in July 2016, and was commissioned as an Army Chemical Corps officer.

1 Nearly 100 members of the Class of 1966 returned to campus to celebrate their 50-year Reunion.
