Over the past year, gratitude has been my constant companion when I reflect on this campaign, its progress, and the hope it brings for a future at St. Catherine University that continues the mission and vision of our founders: the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Gratitude is the root of the wisdom, strength, and determination that this inspiring network of alumni, supporters, and donors have poured into LEAD & INFLUENCE: The Campaign for the Next Level of Excellence. It is to your credit that this campaign has made such incredible progress over the past year, which you will read about in the pages of this special issue. The stories behind your generosity are joyful and affirming, and touch our students in very real ways today. Our students continue to draw strength from your support, and the future looks overwhelmingly positive (pg. 8). Our faculty are innovating and creating new connections between students and the liberal arts, building a pipeline for future students at the same time (pg. 10). The connections our donors have to some of the beloved places on campus are both deeply personal and world-changing (pg. 14). The enduring presence of the Katie Fund has been instrumental in providing stability for our students, so they can focus on an education that will make a difference in the lives they will touch (pg. 16). With nearly 15,000 donors, 48 leadership volunteers, a dedicated Board of Trustees, and three inspiring alumnae all at the helm of the Next Level of Excellence campaign, we are thrilled to be rounding the corner in the final lap of the largest campaign in St. Kate’s history (pg. 6). This special edition is also a tribute to all of our 2021-22 donors and volunteers; your support is a source of great joy and deep gratitude (pg. 24). The campaign has strengthened us and reinforced our mission, and will secure the future of our beloved St. Catherine. None of this would be possible without you. You know the life-changing impact of a St. Catherine education because you have already changed lives with yours. Your wisdom and continued connection to this community are why the future of the Next Level of Excellence grows ever more vivid each day. We are Forever St. Catherine. ReBecca Koenig Roloff ’76

BETH HALLORAN, EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT

The Next Level of Excellence is in sight

The support and generosity shown by you — to our students, our faculty, and our places that hold memories both personal and professional — have reminded so many more around St. Catherine of the power and pricelessness of our relationships here. Each gift is multiplied in value by the love with which it is given. As the light on the horizon grows, and we move closer to our goal, we invite you to share the inspiring stories in this issue. Encourage others to support the Next Level of Excellence; it’s not too late to make a difference in the life of a future Katie. We look forward to celebrating the multitude of successes that we will unlock at the conclusion of this campaign. None of this is possible without your generous support. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

The report and updates that you will read on the pages that follow are but a few of the highlights from our progress over the past year. We have gratefully recognized hundreds of new donors in this campaign, provided immediate relief to students who needed our support through the Katie Fund, and set the launchpad for future innovations in higher education to rise to the high standard set by St. Kate’s. Some of the more powerful stories you have honored us by sharing are the ones that show how your connections to St. Kate’s transcend the educational.

There is so much we are grateful for when we look at the progress of LEAD & INFLUENCE: The Campaign for the Next Level of Excellence over the past year. Our campaign momentum continues to grow, and it is thanks to your generosity that the Next Level of Excellence is now in sight. At the time of this printing, we are within 10% of reaching our goal — this would not have been possible without you.

Lifelong friendships have been forged here, and creating tributes to those connections is another point of celebration throughout this campaign.”

The unmistakeable impact of St. Catherine community With your support, together we are sailing toward the penultimate milestone of the campaign. to-last year of the campaign, we encourage all members of the St. Kate’s community to consider a donation to a campaign priority that speaks particularly to them. We appreciate the window into how a part of your St. Kate’s experience spoke to you and impacted your giving. The campaign also counts planned gift commitments for donors 60 years and older, and celebrates the generosity of each gift and the enduring legacy it creates for future Katies. Campaign Progress We have surpassed the $118 million milestone! Progress continues in our effort to raise $130 million to achieve the Next Level of Excellence Thank you, donors! We’re receiving strong support for all four of the Next Level of Excellence campaign priorities, which you can learn more about by visiting stkate.edu/campaign.

6 ST. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY • SUMMER 2022

In the face of a changing world, St. Catherine University forges ahead with a radical commitment to empowering all women with an education rooted in human dignity, transformative equity, and intellectual inquiry — values instilled by our founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. Your engagement and ownership in this campaign demonstrate this institution’s success in fostering women leaders in a community of action and transformation.

LEAD & INFLUENCE: The Campaign for the Next Level of Excellence is the largest campaign in the history of the University. Our students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community have demonstrated their support of the campaign in record numbers, with over 14,977 total donors at the time of this printing. With 5,975 first-time donors and 8,145 alumni donors — over 1,519 from both of these categories who have generously given to more than one campaign priority — progress in all of these initiatives is thanks to resounding support in all areas of the St. Catherine community. Gifts directed toward the renewal of the Mendel science building have quadrupled over the past year, and gifts toward the Chapel renovation have tripled in that same time. Our students remain central to both the campaign and our donors, with contributions to the Katie Fund surpassing $15 million over the span of the campaign. We are overjoyed to announce that, as of May 31, 2022, the end of our fiscal year, donors like you have given over $118 million in contributions to the campaign, and we are within 10% of achieving our final campaign goal of $130 million. As we enter the secondCAMPAIGN UPDATE

LEAD & INFLUENCE: The Campaign for the Next Level of Excellence progress is current as of 05/31/2022.

• A gift of over $1.5 million from the estate of Agnes Hyungman Moon, PhD, funded two existing scholarships created by Moon: the Anna Jayoung Chung Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Sister Mary L. O’Hara Endowed Scholarship Fund . The Anna Jayoung Chung scholarship honoring Moon’s mother is awarded to a philosophy student each year, and the Sister Mary L. O’Hara scholarship in the memory of a beloved St. Kate’s philosophy professor supports students with financial need.

• Through a bequest from the estate of Jean Mcllquham Stalcup ’72 of over $1.3 million, the University established the Jean Mcllquham Stalcup ’72 Scholarship Fund to provide scholarships to students in the College for Women with financial need.

• St. Kate’s trustee Teresa A. Radzinski ’86 gave $1 million to the Chapel restoration.

• Joanne Jirik Mullen ’83 made a gift of $1.5 million to the protection and preservation of Our Lady of Victory Chapel. Mullen stated that her gift spoke to the influence of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet and the Chapel as “fundamental to our faith formation and life.”

stkate.edu 7 Celebrating $118 million toward our $130 million goal OUR STUDENTS Focusing on need-based financial aid, the new Office of Scholarly Engagement, and an alumni-employer network. OUR FACULTY Strengthening opportunities for faculty development, investing in curriculum innovation, and Inclusive Excellence initiatives. OUR PLACE Restoring and updating Our Lady of Victory Chapel, and creating new science and technology spaces in Mendel. KATIE FUND Providing continuous support year-round for the most immediate and ongoing needs of students and the University. FOUR PRIORITIES MAKE UP THE NEXT LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE CAMPAIGN: YOUR GIFT MAKES A DIFFERENCE

Even as the campaign continues reaching new heights, your generosity is already being put to work as new scholarships, funding for faculty research and development, renovations to our physical spaces on campus, and initiatives for inclusive excellence throughout the University. Some highlights include:

— Sally Kadifa, donor and parent of current St. Kate’s student LEFT: JULIA WALQUIST ’23 (AT LEFT IN RED SKIRT) ORGANIZED EVENTS BENEFITING ST. KATE’S EMPTY BOWLS

A generous gift by donor Sally Kadifa in 2020 established the Office of Scholarly Engagement (OSE), a centralized hub for engaged learning experiences that joined together five existing programs: Collaborative Undergraduate Research, Antonian Honors, Competitive Fellowships, Global Studies, and Community Work and Learning. OSE complements curriculum, supports higher retention rates, increases rate of success on fellowship applications, and improves post-graduation incomes. It also offers hands-on exploration for students as they become leaders who think critically, innovate, and build connections.

8 ST. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY • SUMMER 2022

The critical thinking skills and the creative aspect of a St. Kate’s education, the opportunity to do experiential learning, can help women find out, ‘What do I want to do? How do I apply what I’ve learned in a university setting?’ Bringing all of this under OSE makes it very accessible.”

Now, an additional gift from Mary Absolon ’77 has established the Endowed Fund for Health Policy Research by Nursing Students. For over 30 years, Absolon served as a health regulatory and policy expert at the Minnesota Department of Health. Her background as a St Kate’s-educated nurse, she says, was invaluable throughout her career working for improved quality of care in settings such as hospitals, hospice, and long term and assisted living care. “Through OSE programming and scholarships, we can support St. Kate’s students in learning how to influence our healthcare system through changes in health policy, identifying new regulations, enforcing current ones, Our Students Engaged learning opportunities flourish — inside the classroom and out

stkate.edu 9 developing new laws and tweaks in laws that directly relate to quality of nursing care — so that students can see how the framework relates to their practice as a nurse,” Absolon says. “Studying and exploring this area in different ways will position students to have an impact and make a difference for people — and health policy is all about making a difference.”

Absolon’s endowment is an exciting crystallization of the interdisciplinary practice that has long taken place through what is now called OSE. Take, for example, Julia Walquist ’23, a nursing major exploring public health disparities through St. Kate’s Empty Bowls Project, which merges art and social justice to raise awareness and money for individuals experiencing food insecurity. In 2021-22 through the Assistantship Mentoring Program in Community Work and Learning, Walquist worked with art faculty member Monica Rudquist to organize Empty Bowls events, partner with Open Arms of Minnesota, and donate funds to the St. Kate’s Food Access Hub. These learning experiences, while not directly connected to the nursing curriculum, have enriched her perspective on health equity and community access to resources.

“This scholarship will give nursing students the ideas and the confidence that nursing translates to so many other things,” agrees Walquist. “St. Kate’s has a place for nurses to work on other passions and to tie it all together.”

STUDIOSREBECCABY’10,SLATERPHOTO/REBECCA

“What we talk about in nursing school is that I have a duty to advocate for my patients on an individual level, and I have a duty to advocate for them on a systemic level to change the policies that put them in this position,” Walquist says. “I’ve seen that firsthand through this project, and I’ve seen how far beyond nursing it goes. It’s not just advocating for the things that we think of when we think of healthcare — food insecurity is directly related, even though we maybe don’t immediately think ofAncheethat.”

Nitschke Durben ’24, a public health and data science double major, has also taken advantage of multiple OSE programs to focus on health equity in her studies. For her most recent project this spring, she conducted research with public health faculty member Elizabeth Allen, PhD, and the interdisciplinary “Welcoming the Dear Neighbor?” (WTDN) team to examine disparities in health outcomes as the result of historical racial covenants. A NEW GIFT BY MARY ABSOLON ’77 HAS ESTABLISHED THE ENDOWED FUND FOR HEALTH POLICY RESEARCH BY NURSING STUDENTS. “Being involved in this project makes me feel like, as the WTDN team, we are living out the St. Kate’s mission by looking at these social justice issues, trying to make change,” Durben says. “It made me feel like I, as a student, can make a difference in and be connected to my broaderStudentscommunity.”likeDurben and Walquist, who are already benefiting from OSE intensive engaged learning experiences, are examples of what Absolon means when she describes Katies as “leaders and agents of change.” Absolon is excited to see possibilities blossom for nursing majors to explore and integrate other health focuses.

“Learning to read poetry in an unbiased way has been a new experience for me,” said fashion design student Carrie Zirbes ’23. “The creative process was organic and had an element of spirituality, which was a very special way to explore my skills.”

Lillvis’ outreach extends to current Katies outside of the English department, too. She teaches students in science and business classes how to relate their personal stories to a variety of different audiences. She also engages students in her work as director and co-editor of Movable: Narratives of Recovery and Place, an online platform that shares stories about recovery from substance- and alcohol-use disorder.

Woodson, whose generous gift sparked the Muellerleile chair’s efforts, was moved by what the community had developed over the semester. “I wanted to fund a position that would maintain the relevance of and create innovation in the field of English,” she said. “Kristen’s work this past year has absolutely brought that to St. Kate’s, but she has spread it to the larger community, too. It’s been a joy to see this work come to life.” faculty to build a stronger St. Kate’s

10 ST. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY • SUMMER 2022

Investing in faculty is a natural focus for the LEAD & INFLUENCE campaign, as a strong faculty body is not only essential to student success but also bolsters the entire reputation of an academic institution. For example, funding for endowed chair positions helps the University recruit esteemed professors and empowers them to innovate and enrich the academic experience.

The University’s newest endowed chair was created through a gift from Brenda Grandstrand Woodson ’80, JD, in honor of her former advisor and English professor Mary Alice Muellerleile ’60. Its first appointee, Kristen Lillvis, PhD, is making the most of the opportunity.

CAMPAIGN PRIORITY

Occupational therapy student Aubrey Lemon ’23, MAOT’25 is working with Lillvis on Movable to reduce stigma and create a recovery community right here at St. Kate’s. “On-campus support is integral to removing barriers from self-care and recovery,” said Lemon. Last spring, the Muellerleile position made possible another impressive collaboration, this time with Minnesota poet laureate Gwen Westerman, PhD, who visited campus in February and April. In between Westerman’s visits, Lillvis taught poetry analysis to students in various disciplines and encouraged them to create works inspired by Westerman’s poetry and fiber arts specific to their fields. Students and faculty participated in creative writing, costume design, dance, ASL interpretation, quilt making, mobile construction, photography, and more.

Our Faculty Empowering

“I’m really grateful for this position’s focus on pipeline building: the pipeline into St. Kate’s, the pipeline of helping students think about the arts, humanities, and English while they’re here, and then for them to consider what they would do afterward,” says Lillvis. As part of this work, she visits high school classrooms to speak about storytelling, poetry, and more. These visits, and her interdisciplinary collaboration with other staff and faculty such as Anh-Hoa Nguyen and Anupama Pasricha, PhD, are a chance to get students excited about English and about St. Kate’s.

Preserving the Chapel as a core aspect of the St. Kate’s experience for students like Guezeon is dear to the hearts of donors such as Kate Nigon Dienhart ’75. As the site of her wedding, her daughter’s wedding, and her granddaughters’ baptisms, the Chapel “has a strong and special place in our family’s history,” says Dienhart, whose gift sponsors one of the same pews that held family and friends at these special events. “Having a strong college education has given us the foundation for successful careers and family life, and we think it’s important that everybody do what they can to pay it forward.”

The Chapel played an equally meaningful role in the lives of alumnae donors Jeanne Madigan ’56 and Nancy Parlin ’56. Childhood friends, the two first attended grade school together, and then went on to Derham Hall High School, then located on the St. Kate’s campus. Together, they completed their educational paths at the then-College of St. Catherine. Between Mass, Madigan ’56

Our Lady of Victory Chapel is a haven for spirituality and connection for St. Catherine University students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members alike. Since the moment its iconic doors opened in 1924, generations of St. Kate’s graduates have shared enduring memories of the Chapel as a profoundly religious center, the setting for landmark St. Kate’s moments such as Commencement, and a beloved community locale. It is then fitting, indeed, that one of the campaign pillars focuses on restoration of this cherished space that has been restorative for so many. “I love to sit in the Chapel when I need to find my peace, stay there just for a few minutes and breathe,” says Sylvie Guezeon MBA’22. The Chapel provides a rejuvenating space for students, as well as activities and programming through the Center for Spirituality and Social Justice — where Guezeon works — encouraging them to grow in community with one another. “It helped me to connect with students that I would have not otherwise been able to know.”

“The generosity of donors like Nancy, Jeanne, Kate, and so many others is key to making the repairs that will keep the Chapel a constant in the lives of St. Kate’s students and community members for another 100 years,” says Sharon Howell, CSJ, director of the Center for Spirituality and Social Justice.

Though post-college life led Madigan all around the country and eventually to North Carolina, where she retired, she and Parlin have remained in touch. The campaign provided a beautiful way for them to honor their lifelong friendship and the Chapel’s prominent role in their time at St. Kate’s. Both alumnae have made gifts in the names of the Parlin and Madigan families, sponsoring windows right next to each other that will help preserve both the beauty of the Chapel in which they spent so much time over the years and shine light on new lifelong friendships that are just beginning.

WHY OUR DONORS GIVE TO OUR PLACE

“There is a sense of community within Mendel that is so special,” says Batiste-Simms. “Everyone is consistently willing to have a conversation, review different scenarios, and find the best path forward. St. Kate’s has given me the confidence to go into classes and not be intimidated, to enjoy the learning process and not just struggle through it. It is a place where I have been able to flourish.”

Our

On October 5, alumna Katherine Buuck Fratzke ’17 attended the St. Catherine University Expanding HERizons town hall event and was struck with a vision: a multi-generational family gift to support the education of underrepresented students in the sciences. After the town hall, which focused on the obstacles faced by women of color in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, Fratzke brought the opportunity to her parents, Robert and Gail Buuck. They echoed her desire to get involved, and together the family committed $1 million toward the renovation and improvement of the Mendel building as part of LEAD & INFLUENCE: The Campaign for the Next Level of Excellence.

“Updating the space is just the first step in our trajectory to extend and reinvigorate our approach to STEM,” says Taviare Hawkins, PhD, division chair for math and sciences. “We are embedding career competencies into classwork and establishing close partnerships with the industry. These are the steps that will empower students with clear paths to careers in STEM.” Place

“There are so many voices and ideas that are not being heard and explored,” Fratzke says. “We are limiting ourselves and the possibilities to address current issues if we don’t bring a diverse set of thoughts and ideas forward.”

Mendel gift supports futures in STEM We need to provide the physical spaces to support these newer teaching methods, update the technology, and be the catalyst for future crossdisciplinary teaching.”

With exactly this at heart, St. Kate’s has been educating future leaders and changemakers for over a century. Essential to continuing this legacy, Fratzke notes, is a learning space with access to state-of-the-art technology and resources to provide students with the support, opportunities, and freedom to discover. “Mendel was a place where I felt energized to learn and explore new ideas,” recalls Fratzke. “St. Kate’s students are big thinkers and dreamers, and an environment in which to investigate and discover is vital to their Thosesuccess.”sentiments are echoed by Morgan BatisteSimms ’22, a chemistry major with a biochemistry concentration who has spent countless hours in the building during her studies.

As a current student, Batiste-Simms also envisions the potential these updates will help unleash in Katies to come. “STEM is never not going to be crucial. We need to be investing in the next generation of hard science students, our next round of researchers,” she says. “While part of being a researcher is having to deal with obstacles, it’s usually due to the research itself — not the physical space in which it is being conducted. Updating the space and technology will allow us to focus more on the science.”

• In February 2022, Give to Honor Her gifts honored 726 women who have made a positive difference both in the life of a Katie and the world. “Contributing on these days makes a big difference,” says Iverson. “Our Katies make amazing change in the world, and through the Katie Fund they empower future lives of meaning.”

“The Katie Fund impacts all students,” says student Gabrielle Agbenyiga ’24. “From building maintenance, media resources, and technology, to scholarships and financial aid, every Katie Fund gift helps my peers and friends. Because of the Katie Fund, we can receive an education and experience a strong support system.”

The Katie Fund is a powerful tool for the University to fulfill its mission to educate women leaders.

Donors also share a strong desire to support St. Kate’s mission to create a broader, more diverse community. As Kelly Vinson-Taylor ’90 attests, “There is never a question that I will donate to St. Kate’s. I was a first-generation college student and I know its challenges. Attending St. Kate’s made such a difference in my life: lifelong friendships and a network of Katies no matter where I travel. I want other women to have that, especially first-generation and BIPOC students. I truly believe by donating money to St. Kate’s, alumni are fulfilling students’ dreams.”

• Give to St. Kate’s Day is the University’s largest single day of donor participation every year. In November 2021, 900 supporters raised more than $471,953.

Paying it forward to provide opportunities for other women is a reason to give that has resonated with generations of Katies. Regardless of where they live, what they do, or what year they graduated, donors to the Katie Fund find themselves moved by their own St. Kate’s education. Mary Albright Michel ’71, for example, has given to the Katie Fund throughout her life: “I had a wonderful experience and a terrific education at St. Kate’s. I look back and feel such gratitude for what I was given, and I love that I can help other young women have the same opportunity.”

LEADING and INFLUENCING are the hallmarks of a Katie. They are also the calls-to-action that connect alumni to today’s student needs by inspiring them to give to the Katie Fund. Dollars from the Katie Fund, St. Kate’s annual giving program, flow directly to the area of greatest need and most immediate opportunity.

Simple, fast, and easy to navigate, the process of donating to the Katie Fund reflects the agility and flexibility of this fund as it supports students experiencing diverse obstacles to their education. While life at St. Kate’s has stabilized since the onset of the pandemic, many Katies still face the challenges of its lingering effects, and the Katie Fund bolsters services such as tutoring, financial aid to close the gap due to lost employment, and more resources for faculty to meet students where they are both academically and socialemotionally. The alumni contributions made through the Katie Fund are being felt by students — whether economics majors like Agbenyiga, biology students like Stephanie Nguyen ’23, or future nurses like Tina Thompson ’22 — like never before. “We are so grateful that those who were able to give were so generous,” says Mary Beth Iverson ’85, director of Annual Giving. “Recent graduates gave in record numbers. They wanted to show their support and help students keep their education on track. 2021 was our best fundraising year to date, and the generosity of St. Kate’s alumni and friends as we reach the end of Katie Fund

Generations of giving support today’s students 2022 is similarly strong!”

2022’s remarkable gifts included your time and talent

The generosity of the St. Catherine University community manifests each year in abundance as St. Kate’s alumni, friends, and community members volunteer their time and experience to support our Katies. In 2021–22, over twice as many students were directly impacted by volunteering compared to last year. “The fact that our impacted students more than doubled confirms the crucial difference our generous volunteers are making for today’s Katies,” says Beth Riedel Carney ’82, vice president of Development and Alumni Relations. “The Katie Volunteer Program has been remarkable in permitting our alumni and community members not only to connect with current students, but to help shape the University with their time andThroughtalents.”the Katie Volunteer Program, volunteers select opportunities that meet their interests, skill sets, and availability, including options for one-time, shortterm, and long-term engagement. This year volunteers turned out in record numbers to serve as class leaders, with over 100 more volunteers than in 2020–21. You came to campus and you joined us from home, donating more than 1,000 hours of your time to over 600 different roles. In fact, thanks to the foundation of opportunities already established, 2021–22 became the year to grow the variety of opportunities for alumni to engage with today’s Katies. From simple gestures like Finals Fuel to longerterm engagement and mentoring with students, to expertise-focused opportunities like panel and class speakers, Katies continue to live the St. Catherine mission. Alumni invested even more deeply in students with the launch of the BIPOC mentorship program, which works with Multicultural and International Programs and Services (MIPS) to pair BIPOC students with BIPOC alumni. In addition to group orientation and check-ins, the mentorship partners met independently on a monthly basis to work on a variety of goals — from mock job interviews to navigating nursing as a student of color. Some pairs met in person, while others chose to meet virtually (one mentor hails from Canada!).

Does all of this sound familiar? In November 2023, we will conclude our capital campaign, LEAD & INFLUENCE: The Campaign for the Next Level of Excellence, with its vision-driven priorities: providing transformative learning experiences for our students, investing in our faculty, preserving and renewing our campus buildings, and sustaining the Katie Fund, which supports scholarships and other student needs.

From the Board Chair

At all levels of leadership, beginning with President Becky Roloff, St. Catherine University is laser-focused on graduating a vibrant diversity of leaders from our College for Women, College for Adults, and Graduate College who are steeped in the liberal arts and fully prepared to enter their chosen profession with confidence and integrity. While introducing our capital campaign, President Roloff said, “The need for ethical, brilliant leadership in the world has never been stronger.” We all know how true this is!

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and the University, I cannot thank you enough for your generous gifts to our beloved University. Since opening its doors in 1905, St. Catherine University has held fast to its mission of educating women to lead and influence — and your ongoing commitment to St. Kate’s has made that possible. In its early years, the young College of St. Catherine faced global, national, and local challenges much like what we are experiencing today: a pandemic, international tensions and war, systemic inequities and social injustices. Acknowledging the severity of these conditions yet unaware of their potential impact, our founder Mother Seraphine Ireland and first president and dean Mother Antonia McHugh, with the support of the Sisters of St. Joseph, nonetheless stepped boldly into the future. They had a vision for what could be and an aspiration for excellence. Thankfully, they also had the creative power to transform that vision into reality. They sent faculty to prestigious schools for advanced degrees, designed challenging courses of study, built stateof-the-art buildings, and provided scholarships for students.

56 ST. CATHERINE UNIVERSITY • SUMMER 2022 STUDIOSREBECCABY‘10,SLATERPHOTOS/REBECCA

THE IMPACT OF WOMEN OF COLOR IN STEM In February, Kizzmekia S. Corbett, PhD, inaugurated the University’s new Women of Color Leadership Series, part of the School of Business’ Katie Leadership Impact. Corbett, who led the National Institutes of Health team that helped develop the COVID-19 vaccine, shared her journey of scientific innovation with the St. Kate’s community. Corbett began her St. Kate’s visit with a Mendel classroom conversation with STEM students, and concluded with a discussion and Q&A facilitated by University trustee Samantha Hanson in The“AsO’Shaughnessy.Iwatchedthesuccesses of Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, I imagined myself in her shoes, and I was able to stay there. I didn’t have to wonder, ‘What would this dream look like because of the color of my skin or my gender?’” said chemistry student Morgan BatisteSimms ’22, who introduced the lecture. “Through Dr. Corbett’s story, my own dreams of becoming a great scientist and doctor are further solidified.”
