FROM THE PRESIDENT

A Letter from the President How often we use scientific ideas to describe everyday feelings or relationships.

“There was good chemistry in the room,” “She improved the ecosystem we are living in,” “Nothing he said added up,” “The team’s DNA came through loud and clear,” “It took off like a rocket,” and the list goes on.

From the arrival of our first chemistry teacher (a man!) in 1921 to the building of Mendel Hall in 1926 and launching undergraduate scientific research about 30 years later... and our participation in Minnesota’s March for Science (see inside front cover) this spring, Katies of all ages prove that science remains a strong example of what education in the liberal arts really means.

Yet, when I reviewed this “Good Chemistry” issue, I was quickly reminded that the true meaning of this phrase has very little do with the hard sciences.

Yes, you’ll read about 2008 alumna Bridget Newman’s inspiring work as a chemist and you’ll be proud of our students’ 100 percent acceptance rate to the National Conference on Undergraduate Research and how our faculty leverage the latest in technology to advance educational experiences. But when you dive a little deeper into each story, you will find that all our work — students, faculty, staff and alumnae alike — is about something much bigger.

It’s about learning who we are, what higher purpose we are called to, and how we stretch our minds and hearts to change the world around us. It’s a transformation that doesn’t happen in a single discipline or field of study; it can only happen through learning steeped in the broad liberal arts.

Your St. Kate’s education was purposely infused with the liberal arts. It wasn’t added as an afterthought; it was the foundation the Sisters of St. Joseph chose as the strategy on which every other facet of this University was built.

It was their way of announcing to the world that, in no uncertain terms, St. Catherine would be a launching school — not a finishing school.

And so it was. And so it is. And so it ever will be.

Last night, a classmate asked me, “What can we do to help besides being donors?” I told her to stay connected with other Katies, help us recruit and be an example of what a well-educated, passionate woman can do to make the world better. I wish I added, “Defend and explain the liberal arts to those who dismiss them as fluff or impractical, because they are anything but.” The liberal arts teach us to think critically, to inquire, to theorize, and then to choose our course. They inspire us to forever remain students of the world and all those around us.

I close with this quote from our own Sister Marie James Gibbons, a longtime chemistry teacher and dean of students.

“No student who follows the course in chemistry with any degree of attention can fail to appreciate the achievement of human culture, gain an orderly notion of human truth and its relation to Divine truth, and develop on the basis of this knowledge the ability to judge with maturity and responsibility; as well as have a reverence for God and all creation.”

I don’t think we could find a better description of “Good Chemistry.”

I hope all of you can take some time to enjoy family, friends and all creation during these summer months.

Portraits of Growth Four students reveal — in their words — how a year as a Katie has changed them.

D

o you remember your first year at St. Catherine?

Were you excited, afraid or maybe both? If you could sum it up in a single sentence, what would you say?

Last September, we invited four first-year students to share their thoughts on college life and their reasons for choosing St. Kate’s. Our conversations were punctuated by stories of longing for family and pets and mixed with bashful glances, rambunctious laughter and zeal for the year that lay ahead. Each held tight to a keepsake they’d brought from home to help ease their transition.

In April, we sat down with them again to gather their reflections on how the year had changed them, the hopes they have for the upcoming year and what they have to say to new Katies who’ll start in the fall. These young women’s answers vary greatly, but one thing on which they all agree: one year at St. Kate’s transformed them, in small ways and big — none of which revealed themselves through the lens of our camera.

TRIALS AND TRIUMPHS… Winter was pretty cold, but I didn’t have to deal with it too much. I went home over the holiday break to see my parents and help my grandmother with housework.

We’re a close family — and I also have 45 cousins. It’s hard being away from everyone. School became so much tougher too. The study techniques I used my first semester didn’t really work this spring. But I’m starting to figure out what I need to do and when I need to do it, with some help from a MIPS* peer mentor. This year, I picked up drawing again and taught myself how to play the piano.

Both activities really help me relax.

HOPES AND DREAMS… In my sophomore year, I hope to have a better handle on things. I love it here, and I want to be more involved on campus and advocate for different causes.

ADVICE TO NEW KATIES… Don’t hide your struggles. There’s a really good support system at St. Kate’s.

KEEPSAKE… My grandma’s crucifix. She gave this to me three years ago, and I keep it close because it reminds me of her.

Age 22 St. Paul and Botswana, Africa Music Theater FEARS OVERCOME… I thought of leaving St. Kate’s my first semester because I wasn’t sure about it being all female, or if I could really pursue my passion for dancing. But then I saw the opportunities that women are given here. Growing up, my mom (Jacobeth Molathwa Khupe ’99) constantly said, “St. Kate’s is a good community; it has a lot of opportunity for you.” I didn’t believe her. But now, after being here for a year, I do!

Age 18 Monticello, Minnesota Nursing and Wildcat basketball CHANGING AND STAYING THE COURSE… There was a period this winter when I doubted if nursing was for me. But then I attended a healthcare summit on campus and my passion was renewed after hearing two nurses speak about their work. I’m pretty dead set on it now. I also got a new job in January as a student community safety officer. I took it because the night schedule fit my commitment as a student-athlete better, but not returning as a student photographer for St. Kate’s marketing and communications office was hard because I love photography. (Jaelyn took the September photos of her peers for this feature.)

HOPES AND DREAMS… Through the ACTC,* I can minor in dance at Macalester, and that’s starting to open a lot of doors for me. I traveled to Duluth in March for the American College Dance Association, and I performed at a spring concert in April. I’m really excited to see what next year brings.

ADVICE FOR NEW KATIES… Be O.K. with not being in your comfort zone! That’s where all the growth happens.

KEEPSAKE… My baseball cap. But I do less hiding these days, so I seldom wear it anymore. You know that feeling of walking on an unstable bridge? That’s how I felt at the beginning of the year. Now I’m more grounded. * The Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC) allows students to cross-register at five local campuses.

A-HA MOMENT… My biggest a-ha moment this year was realizing how important my dad is to me. Distance has made me value time with him so much more.

ADVICE FOR NEW KATIES… Keep your dorm room clean. It makes coming back after class less stressful!

KEEPSAKE… My basketball from high school. It was a huge comfort for me these two semesters because the sport has always been a constant in my life. In a year with so many changes, it was nice to have something so familiar.

I felt particularly inspired to get more involved at St. Kate’s and be a role model for incoming students.

HOPES AND DREAMS… My first year was a gradual process of solidifying my identity as a Katie and learning how to engage with my peers on a deeper level. As a sophomore, I look forward to taking more risks and actively seeking out new experiences!

ADVICE FOR NEW KATIES… Embrace the journey! If you do, more doors will open for you.

KEEPSAKE… My personal copy of The Hobbit. This was one of my favorite childhood stories and it inspired my love of reading. Carrying it this past year reminded me that no matter how many things were rapidly changing in my life, the stories that I’ve lost myself in will always stay with me.

W

hen’s the best time for a woman to reinvent herself vocationally: Before she starts a family? After the kids are grown? While she still likes her first career? Or when she can’t stand the thought of one more Monday in the same field? The answers are very personal, as four St. Catherine women can attest.

HAPPY ACCIDENTS For Jeanne Unemori Skog ’72, reinvention was always the necessary product of larger circumstances. Graduating with a teaching degree into a job market that could not absorb new teachers, she pivoted to banking, government and high-end retail. Then, lacking the necessary criteria for employment in Hong Kong, where her husband’s work had taken them, she started her own interior design service.

When the Skogs returned to Jeanne’s home state of Hawaii with two children and her husband’s budding architecture practice, she answered a posting for a secretarial job. Fast-forward 33 years. This June, she’s retiring as president and CEO of the Maui Economic Development Board, the nonprofit whose ad she answered so long ago.

As she reflects on her somewhat accidental transitions, Skog says all of her earlier careers contributed to her success in economic development. “If I were doing things again,” she says, “the only real change would be to make it home for dinner more. Creating the right balance isn’t easy, but I think it’s tremendously important.”

NEVER SAY NEVER Therese Whalen Dlugosch ’92, MAOT’13, came to the same conclusion about balance, but not without some pain. Having started her career in the insurance field, she recalls being pregnant with her second child while “working 60 or 80 hours a week and with my husband traveling 80 percent of the time.”

Dlugosch reached a turning point when she realized she and her husband were arguing about who should

stay home with a sick child. Since her husband enjoyed his work and she could not say the same for hers, she decided to resign.

The reinvention to stay-at-home mom was difficult for Dlugosch after her demanding career. “It really helped that I was volunteering very actively at St. Kate’s,” she says, “because it made me feel like I had more purpose.” As it turns out, returning to her alma mater also introduced Dlugosch to a new career as a registered and licensed occupational therapist — an interest sparked by meeting OT graduates on campus.

Now three years into her work with burn survivors at Hennepin County Medical Center, Dlugosch counsels: “Take the risk, and never say never. I never thought I’d be a stay-at-home mom, I never thought I’d work in healthcare. But it’s been great for me and for my family.”

BACK TO THE FUTURE For Mary Shearen ’75, taking a risk meant moving beyond her parents’ loving but restrictive views, including their gender stereotypes. Her father, in particular, would say things like, “You don’t want to grow up to be a lady lawyer” — which of course, was exactly what she wanted to do. But she chose nursing, influenced by her mother’s nursing career and her dad’s heart attack when she was a teenager. There was also a practical reason: She planned to marry her high school sweetheart and needed a familyfriendly vocation while he trained to be a doctor.

As it turns out, Shearen was a good nurse, and later, a good head nurse. Still, when she took leave to have her second child, she was ready for a break. Or so she thought.

Even with two children to occupy her time, Shearen began to pine — or whine, as she recalls — for intellectual stimulation, and for law school in particular. She finally jumped in when her husband noted that it wasn’t going to be easier to fit in later. Pregnant with their third child, she took the LSAT, then started attending law school at night, relying on a neighbor and a friend to babysit.

Now 64, Shearen has been practicing estate law for nearly 30 years at Best & Flanagan LLP in Minneapolis.

With no plans to retire, she’s going full steam ahead, still relying on the communication and problem-solving skills she learned at St. Kate’s and as a nurse.

“I think I always knew that I wanted to do law,” she says. “There were just some other things I had to do first.”

Her advice? “It’s wrong to think you can only do one thing.

People need to know it’s normal to change careers.”

LEAP OF FAITH For Kim Myers, currently a student in St. Kate’s spiritual direction program, the decision to transition careers meant taking a significant leap: Quitting her corporate job at age 53, with no income, no spouse and absolutely no idea what she wanted to do next.

“I felt the need to do something more spiritually centered, where I was serving others,” she says. “I remember praying and saying, ‘God, I can’t quite figure it out. I need help.’” Shortly after, she decided to leave her job of 25 years “while I was still well-thought-of.”

She adds, “I drove to work and I told my boss. She was stunned. I think I was stunned too.”

Over the next two years, Myers lived on savings while seeking a new vocation. Finally, her career counselor pressed her with questions until she blurted out, much

to her surprise, “I want to be a spiritual director!” That breakthrough led to her enrollment at St. Catherine University, and eventually to her current position as parish administrator for St. Stanislaus Catholic Church.

Even though she’s much happier, Myers says she will never regret the corporate career that made it possible to raise two children on her own. And yet, she’s equally certain she needed to resign. “I think we have to ask if we’re doing our work because of somebody else’s template or because it’s what we want to do,” she says. Then, spoken like a true spiritual director, she adds, “There’s a real role for discernment in your life.”

BY PAULINE OO Dulce Ocampo ’18 grew up a block away from 3M’s Maplewood, Minnesota, campus, and this summer she gets to share that fun fact with her new colleagues in the Fortune 500 company. Ocampo is one of eight Katies picked for 3M’s highly coveted Frontline Internship, which scouts top talent from colleges across the nation.

Instead of descending on Graceland or sinking their teeth into mouthwatering barbecue, 16 Katies (including Madisen Hyatt ’18, in photo) spent two-and-a-half days in Memphis presenting to — and fielding questions from — an audience of peers and faculty from across the United States.

The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR), held each spring, showcases the nation’s best in baccalaureate-level scholarly work. Over the past three years, the University’s acceptance rate for NCUR abstracts is 100 percent — notably better than the national average of 80 to 90 percent.

“This success rate is a testament to our students’ great work and to the exceptional mentoring provided by faculty and the collaborative research advisory committee,” says Lynda Szymanski, director of St. Kate’s Collaborative Undergraduate Research program.

While there wasn’t much time for fun in this home of the blues, these high-performing Katie researchers — who spoke on topics ranging from genetics to Biblical law — did enjoy some local sites, sounds and flavors one evening downtown.

“We’re one of 13 partner schools, and this year, for the first time ever, we have the most students in the program, more than historical front-runners Baylor University and DePaul University,” notes Mary Jacobs, Center for Sales Innovation director.

Ocampo, like her peers, is spending 11 weeks in one of 3M’s divisions. “This is such an honor and accomplishment for me,” she says. “I grew up on Third Street, a block away from the headquarters, and I watched it grow and expand without really knowing what the company actually did.”

In time, she did. Through this internship, Ocampo hopes “to gain real-world experience, meaningful connections, new skills for my toolbox and, hopefully, a position after graduation!”

FALL 2016 CROSS COUNTRY

St. Kate’s recorded its best finish (sixth) at the MIAC Championship in over 10 years. Rachel Hall ’17 earned All-MIAC honors as the Wildcats’ top finisher, while Leighlin Ahlstrom ’20 captured all-conference honorable mention. Both were named all-region at the NCAA Regional the next weekend.

Madi Roe ’17, Abby Conzemius ’17, Kaitlyn Alvarez ’18, Taylor Krouse ’18 (pictured) and Sydney Busker ’19 won St. Kate’s first MIAC Championship in October — and finished an impressive 12th at the NCAA Championship in May.

In another record-setting season, the team received its first NCAA Regional ranking, hosted a MIAC playoff game and advanced to the second round of the tournament for the first time in program history. Hannah Okerstrom ’17 earned All-MIAC honors and was named to the Division III All-North Region second team. She also took home NSCAA Scholar All-North/Central Region second team acclaim.

Teaching Goes High Tech

R

emember those heady high-tech days when you ditched your typewriter and headed to the computer lab instead? You produced your research paper on a dot-matrix printer, being sure to tear off those perforated edges. There also was the wonder of doing research on an encyclopedia CD-ROM and the mind-blowing experience of communicating via email.

Technology on campus certainly has come a long way since then, with computers in every dorm and students using their smartphones and tablets to take notes and write papers. Evolving to offer such advances, St. Catherine University also continually forges new ground with technology in its curricula and classrooms.

Faculty are constantly innovating, using cutting-edge tools to teach coursework in new ways while driving academic innovation. “Learning about technology definitely improves economic outcomes for our students,” confirms Siri Anderson, director of graduate education for licensed teachers. “It gives them an edge and can lead to bigger and better job opportunities.”

Here are a few ways St. Kate’s is leveraging revolutionary technology and leading students to become even more accomplished and marketable.

FIRST, DO NO HARM The patient on the table is giving birth, and the team of nursing students must check her cervix and make sure her blood pressure and the fetal heartbeat are normal.

All goes well when she delivers the baby, but then the new mom starts hemorrhaging — a life-threatening situation. What should the nurses do?

They must communicate with the patient, loved ones and other team members, all while making split-second decisions. It’s not easy for a nurse in training.

But don’t worry. No patients were harmed in this scenario. The students were practicing techniques on St. Kate’s SimMom, a highly realistic pregnancy mannequin who provides real-time learning opportunities. Two to four times each semester, these future nurses use SimMom to make life-or-death decisions to better prepare them for the field.

“The students love it and they hate it. They’re always nervous because they don’t know exactly what’s going to

happen,” says Katie Molitor, assistant professor of nursing and coordinator of the Applied Learning Lab. “But we hear very positive comments about how it’s a really good learning experience, even if it is stressful.”

Nursing students certainly learn in the classroom, but these hands-on clinical experiences bring books and lectures to life. During 15- to 30-minute simulations, students practice putting in IVs, giving medication or helping the patient through a seizure without worrying about causing harm. And when they make a mistake — which they often do — they learn a great deal from that experience and never forget it, Molitor says.

“Simulations are a lot more interesting than reading a book or listening to a lecture. It cements the learning and helps them understand,” she says. “Simulation is great because you can create any situation and you won’t harm the patient.”

SUSTAINABILITY MEETS SCIENCE Watching three-dimensional fashion walk the runway then seeing a 3-D printer in action got Anupama Pasricha thinking: How can I marry my passion for sustainability and apparel design with this emerging technology?

Pasricha, department chair and an associate professor of apparel, merchandising and design, decided to experiment — and bring a student along for the ride.

She and Rachel Greeninger ’18 conducted an extensive review of existing literature, trade articles and technology news to improve their knowledge and understanding of 3-D printing. Then the duo dove in, using the online tools and software programs for modeling and prototyping such as Tinkercad and Rhinoceros 5.

Pasricha had twin goals: to design cutting-edge apparel with 3-D printed accessories and to find ways to reduce the amount of plastic waste generated from the printing.

Using the art department’s 3-D Makerbot Replicator 2 desktop printer, she created custom buttons out of the corn-based biodegradable polylactic acid, or PLA. Greeninger, a double major in apparel design and fashion merchandising, produced a jewelry collection.

with a Twin Cities map. In all, she finished the project more knowledgeable and comfortable with using 3-D printing in fashion in sustainable ways.

The same goes with Greeninger. She presented their research, which was funded by St. Kate’s Summer Scholars program, at the 2016 National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Asheville, North Carolina.

(Read about NCUR 2017, page 11.) Next year, she is planning to design and create other 3-D accessories for her senior line at Katwalk, the annual spring fashion show for St. Kate’s apparel and merchandising students.

Though Pasricha hasn’t fully incorporated 3-D into her curriculum yet, she’s heading quickly in that direction.

“Technology sparks the innovative mindset and opens the doors to thinking differently,” she says. “That’s how we prepare practice-ready grads.”

REDEFINING THE MODERN CLASSIC Talk about Roaring ’20s, and flappers, gangsters and speakeasies come to mind. But history can roar in other ways, like on a multimedia website that engages viewers in a historical map of New York, complete with images, sounds and newsreels from that era.

Studying the humanities — or how we as a society process and document the human experience — is a vital part of any education grounded in the liberal arts.

St. Kate’s is bringing this centuries-old foundation into the 21st century with a new minor in digital humanities that immerses students in diverse technologies and classic literature in bold new ways.

That might mean creating 3-D restorations of archaic heritage spaces or using computer science, artificial intelligence and computational linguistics to analyze Biblical and rabbinic texts in their original language.

“People are excited we’re offering this minor,” says Kyunghye “Konhe” Yoon, associate professor of library and information science. “Because the humanities are the very last place you would expect to adopt or engage in computer technology.”

Students learn technical tools that enhance knowledge and research. Courses cover building databases, app development and web design, while exploring how to use technology to engage with art, literature, history, language, music and more. Yoon developed the program last year to explore the pervasiveness of technology and its implications while giving more women a deeper understanding of its possibilities.

“Technology advances so fast,” she says. “We’re not only taking what’s already here and showing students how to use it in subjects like history or philosophy, we’re teaching them to apply more critical thinking when new technology comes out.”

AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW Licensed teachers who come to St. Kate’s seeking how to integrate technology and STEM education in their teaching are often caught off guard, in the most pleasant of ways, on their first day of class. Instead of settling into their seats, they’re sent off on a quest: Find the spot to get the best view of the Mississippi River or to

“Engaging in authentic, creative and collaborative problem solving, such as improving the life of a monkey in a zoo, is much more likely to engage children in transformative STEM learning,” she says. “While the opportunity to present their work to others — as part of an actual competition for zoo improvements, for example — provides further reinforcement to the child that she or he can be a STEM leader.”

This smartphone scavenger hunt, created by their professor, Siri Anderson, challenges students to find quick-response (QR) codes — those square, checkered symbols rich with hidden data — so they can uncover their next clue. Other times, Anderson teaches students how to create 3-D images using their smartphones and a virtual reality (VR) cardboard headset.

These exercises are part of Anderson’s mission to foster the K–6 teachers’ interest in computational thinking and see new ways to facilitate exploration and authentic learning opportunities. “Many of our graduate students haven’t used VR as part of their instructional practices prior to our first day together,” Anderson explains. “But in five years, this technology will be transforming learning opportunities in every school.”

Jeff Kohoutek, an elementary teacher in the St. Paul Public Schools, couldn’t wait to put into practice all he discovered at St. Kate’s. He contacted the Minnesota Zoo to request that they help him create a 3-D VR model of its snow monkey habitat. His goal was to engage his fourth and fifth graders in engineering a new and improved living space for the animals.

The zoo agreed, and Kohoutek’s students jumped at the chance to don VR viewers and experience the exhibit from the monkey’s perspective, prior to building a prototype — out of cardboard, pipe cleaners and construction paper — that they would later present for actual consideration by the zoo. Next year, Kohoutek plans to take it a step further, guiding his young students to build their snow monkey’s home in a virtual reality world.

Plants or Pills?

W

hen Bridget Newman ’08 arrived at St. Kate’s, she fell in love with the sciences. After exploring the courses offered in the STEM fields, Newman went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in biology and double minor in chemistry and psychology. Her professors — regardless of gender — stood as living proof that a woman could study science and “not be laughed at.” Today, Newman’s success in her field inspires more awe than laughter.

Recruited by Aveda’s research and development (R&D) department soon after graduation, Newman worked to substantiate product claims. For example, if a shampoo was said to strengthen hair by 50 percent, it was up to her to test if that was true on real human strands. She also ran similar tests on other Aveda products, like face and body creams. While in a lab with volunteers, Bridget monitored the before-and-after effects of skin moisturization using the company’s various lotions.

It proved to be a good fit. Aveda’s mission to promote holistic beauty, balance and good stewardship of the earth resonated with Newman’s own values. “I grew up learning to treat others and the planet with dignity and respect — two beliefs that were solidified during my time at St. Kate’s,” she says. “But it wasn’t until I spent two years working for Aveda that I realized how the healing power of plants could be used to improve the lives of those around me.”

That awareness served as a catalyst, spurring her to join Upsher-Smith Laboratories, Inc. in its R&D department. While the shift from holistic healing to pharmaceuticals is a pronounced one, it’s a change that fits Newman’s true inclination to help and heal.

Upsher-Smith owns a wide portfolio of therapies to treat a broad range of health needs that cannot be cured by holistic methods alone. In her position as a lead analytical chemist, Newman develops tests for generic drugs to ensure they have the same effect as their brand-name counterparts. Most of her time is

spent conducting studies using specialized equipment and creating experiments that can quantitate certain aspects of a drug — like the amount of active ingredient or the rate at which the drug dissolves in the body — to prove it is safe and effective.

Newman is also responsible for ensuring the accuracy of scientific data submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for a product’s approval to the marketplace.

“We are not just giving people medicine, but trying to improve their lives,” she says of her company’s philosophy.

“It’s gratifying to see people freed from their pain and able to step out of the shadows.”

The impact of her work is measured not only by the number of people she helps, but by the lessons she imparts to the next generation. Last November, Upsher-Smith sponsored a “Girls, Science and Technology” event in which Newman and other female scientists were able to share with groups of children what they did and how they got into their careers.

Newman says the experience reminded her of life at St. Kate’s, when she looked up to the faculty and saw a future in STEM. “I’ve taken what my professors have done for me,” she explains, “and remembered every day, to encourage young women and girls — future scientists — to pursue their dreams.”

Here, director Michael Peterson explains its purpose and shares his own history with St. Kate’s.

Q:

How does your team serve students?

We work from three different angles to support student growth.

In personal counseling, we offer individual therapy sessions, assessment, consultation and referrals. In student development, we organize educational programs and even print University ID cards for new students. In Access and Success, we support student parents with a variety of resources including emergency grants, laptop loans and child-friendly study spaces.

We like to be engaged in the community, so we’re not viewed as

something apart from it or scary, or behind closed doors. I tell students they can come and see us for any reason or no reason at all. Just being a college student and managing life is stressful enough!

Q:

Tell me more about your programs.

A lot of them come from community requests. The two big ones I organize are “Adjustment to College Life” and “Stress and the College Student.” Both of those look at topics like time management, sleep habits, anxiety and depression.

Q:

Who’s the typical Minneapolis student, and does that affect what she or he might need?

The average age runs between 27 and 29 years old, but we’ve seen people as young as 17 and as old as 78. A fair number are student parents, a lot of them work full time or near full time, and all commute.

Statistically, colleges that serve traditional-age, bachelor’s-degreeseeking students who live on campus see a higher percentage of traffic at their counseling centers. However, some research suggests that associatelevel students may have a higher need, but they access services at

a lower rate. Between parenting, commuting, work and school, it’s difficult for many of them to find a free hour to get help.

Q:

Any services you hope to add in the future?

Currently, the University can only offer a limited number of psychiatric hours per week because access to psychiatrists and, by extension, access to medications they prescribe, is limited. This is a nationwide problem.

It takes three months on average to meet with a psychiatrist, and that’s a long time to ask people to wait if they’re having mental health concerns.

At some point, we’d like to expand our resources in this area because student needs are increasing.

Q:

What’s kept you at St. Kate’s?

I initially thought I’d stay maybe two years, but it’s been 23. Personal counseling centers at this University, and most universities, aid in the retention of students and try to contribute to their ultimate goal of getting a quality education. And it’s through learning that a lot of good things happen. I’ve stayed this long because I can see the impact — it’s always rewarding to hear from graduates that their whole life has changed as a result of coming to St. Kate’s.

The Czech part of my family came to Minnesota as farmers around the 1900s, and they couldn’t afford college. But St. Kate’s reached out to my mother’s great aunt — and that influenced the other generations in my family.

That’s why I’m a believer in education. I particularly enjoy working with immigrant and refugee students because I know that their kids and their children’s kids will be inspired, like I was growing up. I want to pass that on.

who both served in the U.S. Army. While living on a base in Alaska, a family friend told Evert about St. Kate’s — planting a seed that came to fruition years later.

Evert received a scholarship from the Army Wives Club and majored in occupational therapy (OT) at St. Kate’s.

Upon graduation, she headed west, working at hospitals in Los Angeles and San Diego. In 1982, she was asked to run for a position on the Palomar Health Board of Directors, which oversees California’s largest public healthcare system. Within months, Evert was the board president.

When her husband Richard (Dick), a U.S. Navy captain, was assigned a new duty station, they moved east.

With her connections at Palomar Pomerado Hospital and St. Kate’s Alumnae Association, Evert secured work at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Washington, D.C. She held several positions there during the Reagan era, eventually serving as director of community services for the Family Support Administration. To this day, she is the only OT to hold a senior leadership position in the DHHS. In 1991, St. Kate’s professor Sally Ryan encouraged her to run for president of the American Occupational Therapy Association. “I was a dark horse candidate, but I beat an incumbent,” says Evert, who served for four years through a period of healthcare reform. She also led outreach programs with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists.

Recently, she funded the Mary Kuszewski Evert Occupational Therapy Scholarship for an OT student with military ties. “St. Kate’s put its fingerprints on various parts of my life,” she says, “and I’m forever grateful.”

watched nurses helping people, and knew she wanted to be a nurse someday. Several years later, while visiting an aunt in Minnesota, she saw a St. Catherine sign on the Minneapolis campus. She applied and was accepted within weeks.

As a student, she was outspoken when she felt things could be better.

Noor’s willingness to stand up for herself and her classmates helped St. Kate’s in its effort to become more inclusive.

After graduation, Noor took a nursing job at the Hennepin County Medical Center. In 2007, she earned a master’s in nursing and health systems administration at the University of Minnesota. Over the next few years, she held leadership positions at United Health and Fairview Health.

In 2014, she was hired as the chief executive officer at People’s Center Health Services, which operates a network of clinics in Minneapolis.

Many friends there, young black men with great aspirations and potential, too often fell into trouble.

“Eventually, many of them ended up in the penitentiary or dead,” explains the Rising Star Award winner.

Racial disparities in the justice system are vast. A report from The Sentencing Project says one in three black American males born today can expect to go to prison in his lifetime — compared to one of 17 white males. Foster knew she had to make a difference for boys like her childhood friends.

“I wanted to be a social worker to help people,” she says, “except I didn’t want to do case management. So I got a law degree to learn how the system works. Now I’m in a doctoral program in public administration, where I aim to make systematic change.”

When it comes to leadership, inclusivity resonates the most for her. “At St. Kate’s, I was told my voice matters and what I have to say is important,” she says. “As I approach leadership, I always think about who I’m not listening to. Who is not at the table?”

In 2015, Foster opened Jordan House in north Minneapolis to serve at-risk boys ages 14 –18. Because the group home is still new, it’s too soon to measure success using recidivism rates. Instead, daily interactions are evidence of impact.

Noor is at the forefront of healthcare debates as an advocate for those sidelined from the mainstream. “It’s important for leaders in the industry to be advocates,” says Noor, who regularly chats with her patients in waiting rooms and hallways. “We need to tell the stories of those marginalized from our larger healthcare system.”

One example, Foster tells, is of a resident preparing for high school graduation. The staff planned an open house to celebrate, but the young man didn’t think anyone would attend. “People from the YMCA, his school and the group home were there,” she recalls.

“All of a sudden, this kid realized there’s a whole community that loves and supports him.”

As a student, Noor wanted to make things better for others. She is still doing so today.

Foster wants to find more ways like Jordan House to combat issues within the juvenile justice system. And she's doing precisely that. Her Ph.D. research, funded by a Bush Fellowship, will focus on innovative solutions from black community leaders.

AN OLD TRADITION MADE NEW AGAIN

Homecoming returns September 23 — revived and refreshed.

BY SARA BERHOW Homecoming isn’t new to St. Kate’s. The first one, sponsored by the Alumnae Association, was held in June 1923. The celebration changed over the years, then went away altogether a number of years ago. In 2017, it’s making a comeback.

The all-new Homecoming focuses on recent graduates returning to campus at its most vibrant time, the beginning of the academic year. On Saturday, September 23, alumnae celebrating 5-, 10-, and 15-year reunions will be welcomed home to St. Kate’s.

The day is packed with fresh and fun programming for young alumnae and guests — yes, friends and families can join the festivities!

There’s a Homecoming brunch for Katies to catch up with their favorite faculty and staff members. (You can even ask us to invite specific professors or staff members.) There are campus tours, an ice cream social, lawn games and a Wildcat soccer game. The creative can sip wine while painting a St. Kate’s scene, guided by an expert artist.

In addition to special activities for the classes of 2002, 2007 and 2012, the sixth annual Katiefest will take place the same day. This fall festival features a sampling of locally brewed beer and Oktoberfest-themed food.

Katiefest is open to alumnae from all class years.
