Dear friends and colleagues,

As my tenure as St. Catherine’s president draws close to its end, the panoply of events and celebrations that crowd and crown the academic calendar seem to take on fresh meaning. Commencement, for example. This year, we must have drawn the card for “best weather weekend possible,” and the joy of students, families, and the entire St. Catherine community bubbled up and over.

Our guest speakers at our three Commencement ceremonies — long reigning and revered principal of St. Paul Central High School, Mary Mackbee; professor and assistant dean at the University of the Incarnate Word’s new medical school, Dr. Ramona Parker; and activist attorney and Harvard Law graduate Haben Girma — inspired students with deeply personal words drawn from the unique experience of each. Along with ample evidence of her own academic prowess, baccalaureate speaker Haben Girma brought the Class of 2016 to its feet as she spoke to graduates of the College for Women. Blind and deaf since infancy, Haben extended her presence outside to the quad after Commencement where, assisted by technology, she engaged in informal conversation with many graduates and guests. Spectacular weather, spectacular events, joy visible everywhere on campus. Ah yes — the “why” of what we do here at St. Catherine — amplified in inspiring sound and vivid color.

Prior to Commencement, other events included the spring luncheon for scholarship donors and students, a gracious event (page 20) hosted by Alumnae Relations on May 9, St. Kate’s first-ever trip to the NCAA DIII softball championship, and impressive “show and tells” of stunning student scholarship. Lots accomplished and — as this issue of St. Catherine makes clear — the work of the University continues apace during the summer months, as St. Catherine eagerly awaits the arrival of its eleventh president, Rebecca Koenig Roloff ’76.

In 2009, we officially became a comprehensive university. At that time, the Board of Trustees and the St. Catherine community articulated its vision for the University’s first decade — that is, our 2020 Vision “to be recognized as a

3 leading Catholic university distinguished by its innovative spirit and premier baccalaureate college for women.” During these years of unprecedented change and turmoil within U.S. higher education, we have made steady progress against the lofty destination metrics we set for St. Catherine: 1) to be propelled, inspired and guided by our mission; 2) to offer an array of academic programs at all degree levels to both address market need and take advantage of very obvious institutional strengths; 3) to sustain a vibrant learning environment and residential life as well as digital learning options; 4) to be recognized by peers as embodying the key elements embedded in the University’s vision — a leading Catholic university, distinguished by a spirit of innovation and its college for women; and 5) to sustain and enhance the University’s financial strength.

There is more than ample evidence of solid and admirable progress on each of these destination metrics, yet always new horizons ahead and much more to accomplish. We are fortunate that a seasoned executive who loves St. Catherine will take the reins this summer and inherit a talented, hard-working and passionate faculty, staff and Board when she does so. As an alumna, President Roloff will be at home as one of you, while amazed at your exponential growth in numbers, engagement and generosity since she served on the Board in the 1980s and 90s.

I have occasion to visit other Catholic university campuses in many roles — as trustee, consultant, speaker and advisor. There is always something to learn on those visits but, in every case, I come away proud of St. Catherine — our academic reputation, our success as innovators, our financial and enrollment stability, and the high regard in which St. Catherine is held by my colleagues.

That reputation has been built over many decades by many, and I know President-elect Roloff will carry it to new heights as she picks up the torch.

As summer comes, I hope you have meaningful and relaxing time with the people you most love. I’m planning a bit of the same. Working with and among you has been the greatest privilege of my life. I leave with much love and gratitude in my heart.

Should you find yourself in Milwaukee, I’d love a visit. God’s warmest blessing to you this summer and always.

Making Summer Count Students stay on campus in the summer to catch up, get ahead and enjoy what the Twin Cities has to offer.

ora Lundquist is on a mission to graduate from St. Catherine University in three years.

Entering college as a first-year student last fall, she’s technically a sophomore from credits earned during high school. Thanks to St. Kate’s Summer Session, Lundquist has her objective in sight. The University offers robust summer courses, affordable campus living and fun summer activities that keep students thriving during the warm months.

St. Kate’s launched a concerted effort to help students get ahead, catch up or stay on track to earning their degrees three years ago. It ramped

up publicity, added more courses and expanded out-of-class programming to encourage students to stick around. The University also introduced summer start dates in 2015 for some programs to offer students more flexibility.

“For students who feel like they are a little behind or they want to have balance in their life, they can take a class in the summer and not be so crazy during the school year. Or they can dive into just one class and concentrate on that in the summer,” says Lizette Bartholdi, director of academic advising.

Lundquist, a native of Pine City, Minnesota, is majoring in business administration with a focus on marketing and management. She recently added minors in sales and integrated marketing communications. To fit in all of her coursework, she’s taking classes in managerial accounting and business law during Summer Session. She also aims to land an internship and work as much as possible at an off-campus job while living in a residence hall.

“I received an email a month or so ago and found out St. Kate’s Summer Session was offering classes that I needed anyway, and they were cheaper than fall or spring,” she says. “Also, I was planning to stay on campus for work, so I might as well take them now. This way, I’m still set to graduate in three years.” Lundquist already plans to return next summer.

SUMMER LEARNING Summer courses usually cover the same amount of material discussed in a regular semester, but in less time. The University offers three options — a session that begins in early June and goes until mid August, another that goes from early June to early July, and one more starting in July and ending mid August. Summer Session is open to associate, undergraduate, graduate and evening/weekend/online (EWO) students, who pick from a rich variety of courses.

Some students tackle a challenging course in their major so they can give it their full attention, while others explore a budding area of interest such as “Beginning Sanskrit,” “Ceramics” or “Women in Greece and Rome.”

Many take required, high-demand courses like “Biology of Women” to ensure they can get in and complete it on schedule. Other students use Summer Session as a way to lighten their load during the traditional academic year, when they may have an internship or fieldwork.

St. Kate’s offers summer courses on its St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses, as well as online. It’s a great option for students who go home during that season or

for those who balance school and work, Bartholdi says.

“Summer classes are smaller and more intensive, but they have a relaxed atmosphere,” she adds.

And students aren’t the only ones to benefit. Faculty often use Summer Session as an opportunity to explore new teaching methods or to become more creative with their existing education models. They are also more likely to hold a class outside. Popular spots are by Dew Drop Pond and in the English Garden.

For students interested in international experiences, summer brings the chance to learn and be part of life somewhere else — be it Argentina, Botswana or India — or to travel with their favorite professors and assist them with a research project. Every summer since 2005, Jill Welter, Ph.D., associate professor of biology, brings undergraduates to the Eel River Watershed in northern California to conduct stream research. In 2012, she led a team to study climate warming in Iceland for seven weeks.

At St. Kate’s, students can choose from more than 150 study abroad programs in over 50 countries. Summer, J-term, semester and yearlong programs all offer academic credit toward a student’s electives. “[Study abroad] exposes students to people who might think differently or have a different way of doing things,” says Raine de Campeau, director of the Office of Global Studies. “And they start to look at things differently as well. I see a real shift in confidence and independence.”

SUMMER LIVING On top of making progress toward a degree, students benefit in other ways. Those who live on campus gain roughly a 30 percent discount. The University allows students to live in campus housing all summer even if they aren’t taking courses, says Sabrina Anderson, associate director of residence life.

“Living on campus costs less from June to August because we know some students can’t afford this extra expense. They’re either not getting financial aid or

they need to save money to pay their tuition in the fall,” says Anderson. “We want to make summer housing as affordable as possible to help our students breathe a little easier. Plus, we want to encourage students to stay on campus because it’s so beautiful here in the summer and they keep our community vibrant.”

Whenever possible, her staff aims to minimize moving by placing summer students in their upcoming fall spaces.

Options include Morrison, Alberta and Georgia residence halls, where suites offer kitchenettes and apartments include full kitchens.

Having a great place to prepare your own meals or entertain friends isn’t the only summer living amenity at St. Kate’s. The dining room stays open over the summer (with limited hours), along with the library, bookstore, post office and interfaith prayer room in Campus Ministry.

Students can access drop-in tutoring sessions at the O’Neill Center, and use disability resources for free. They can get their hearts pumping at the Butler fitness center or pool just like they do in the fall and spring.

Brigette Marty, associate director of student center and activities, and her team are known for merrymaking at St. Kates. They screen free movies on the quad. They host picnics and barbeques. And their Summer Surprises series even draws faculty and staff out of their offices. As its name suggests, very few ever know what to expect. Take

last year, for example: after voting on their favorite pies (key lime, apple, cherry, French silk and pecan) the crowd in Coeur de Catherine tucked into 300 free slices while catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.

On another midsummer day, the St. Kate’s community cooled off with lemonade and decorated mason jars to calypso music.

Students also expand their horizons or get their scream on with discounted passes to museums and the Valleyfair amusement park. Last summer, several students joined alumnae and their families at CHS Field for a St. Paul Saints game.

“The Twin Cities is a great place to be in the summer, and we want to help students explore,” says Marty. And then, of course, there is the beauty of campus, which really shines in the warmer months.

“The flowers are blooming, and everything is so green and lush,” Marty adds. “That creates a new sense of calm with students. I don’t see them as frantic and harried as I do during the school year.”

Summer Session at St. Kate’s is a time like no other.

Students revel in a singular mix of focused academics, summer fun and convenient living in the heart of a vibrant, happening campus. Summer students have it all, and they keep coming back for more.

Coming Full Circle Alumna continues lifelong commitment to education and service at Camp Knutson.

BY ELIZABETH OTTO Mary Kay “Kate” Williams ’60 first served as a camp counselor while she was a student at St. Kate’s, and it was this Catholic girls’ camp in Crosslake, Minnesota that sparked her interest in biology and inspired her to become a teacher. Now, after a decades-long career in education, Williams can be found each summer on that very same lake as the assistant director of Camp Knutson — a very different camp than the one she attended as a Katie.

Working at Camp Knutson allows Williams to integrate her passion for nature and education with the commitment to service instilled in her at St. Kate’s. The camp, according to its mission statement, “is dedicated to nurturing the well-being of persons with special needs in a setting which celebrates God’s love for community and creation.” Williams estimates that in summer 2016 it will welcome about 650 children with unique needs

related to heart disease, skin disorders, autism, Down syndrome and HIV/AIDS, accompanied by more than 400 support staff.

“We’re into making a safe place for kids, providing them with an environment in which they can be loved and cared for, and experience things that they wouldn’t get a chance to do otherwise,” she explains.

Former Camp Knutson counselor Rebecca Bjorke ’14, MAOT’15, says the camp’s emphasis on providing a setting where all people are valued is a reflection of Williams’ own principles. “Serving others is always on the forefront of Kate’s mind,” she adds, noting that Williams is deeply motivated by Catholic Social Teaching.

“I was raised in parochial schools, and was taught by Dominicans in the first eight years of my grade school,” says Williams. “Then I was at the Academy of Holy Angels, which was owned and operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.” As a result, the call to serve our neighbor was integrated into her early learning.

Williams attended St. Kates, just as her mother (a 1937 graduate) did. It was a natural fit, because the University’s mission aligned with her values.

For 20 years after earning a bachelor’s degree in biology, Williams taught at Regina Catholic High School for girls in Minneapolis. Her work and many conversations with the Dominican nuns only further fueled her passion for social justice. She went on to teach science at Minneapolis Community College and, as a master gardener with the University of Minnesota Extension Service, create closedcircuit broadcasts about plants and the natural world for patients at the university’s Children’s Hospital.

Williams became involved with Camp Knutson by coincidence. She grew concerned after reading in a

local newspaper that the camp’s owner, Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota (LSS), wanted to sell it. Her chance to do something came one evening at the opera in St. Paul, when she overheard Mark Peterson, the chief executive officer of LSS, speaking with someone about the pending sale.

“I said to my husband, ‘Don’t talk to me; I’m eavesdropping,’” recalls Williams. She was retired at the time but spending her days as a beekeeper — an interest that developed at St. Kate’s, by the way, when she wrote her senior paper about social insects.

Williams worked her way into Peterson’s conversation and urged him to preserve the land and continue offering camping experiences because “the value of camping for individuals is profound,” she notes. Peterson connected Williams and her husband with a development director at LSS. Together, along with other worried neighbors, the group made a plan to raise funds for the camp. Williams co-chaired the advisory board and eventually became one of its leaders.

Williams finds Camp Knutson, 20 feet across the channel from where she was first inspired to teach and study biology, the perfect place to complete her enduring love of nature and serving others. “My life has come full circle, really,” she says.

With the dizzying array of things to do (or not do) this season, we decided to choose two activities — reading and roaming — and ask seven people to tell us how to enjoy them.

Their recommendations and friendly advice are on the following pages.

What are you reading? In the summer, I often turn to more contemporary novels that have been adapted into films. It’s a way of re-thinking some of the films I have seen during the winter or preparing for some I have yet to see.

What’s on your nightstand? The stack is getting larger, but it includes: Under the Wide and Starry Sky In the Country The Sun Also Rises: The Hemingway Library Edition Room Lost Lake Birthday Letters The Danish Girl If you could require college students to read one book, what would it be? The Scarlet Letter, for two

reasons. It does a lot of cultural work for us latent Puritans and, as a “tale of human frailty and sorrow,” it tells us more about ourselves than we wish to know.

What are you reading? I’m going to finish The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. My most recent favorite book is Island Beneath the Sea. Who are your favorite authors? J. California Cooper and James Baldwin.

What should students read? I think all college students should be required to read two books: Medical Apartheid and Killing the Black Body.

Real books or e-books? I still like the feel of paper.

What are you reading? Our family is doing the “1,000 Books Before Kindergarten” challenge, so I plan to read as many picture books as possible with my daughter. And I can’t wait to finish Mike Jung’s Unidentified Suburban Object.

What genres should a child read over the summer?

According to reading expert Stephen Krashen, children learn to love to read and improve reading and writing skills most when they engage in “free voluntary reading” — when they can choose the books themselves. This means we should encourage them to read in any genre. Some children might like reading biographies; others may like fantasy, or both!

Any recommendations? I highly recommend Shannon Gibney’s See No Color, a finalist for the Minnesota Book Awards. For a younger audience, Zetta Elliott’s Let the Faithful Come, and for our youngest readers, the bilingual board books from Lil’ Libros.

Cecilia Konchar Farr, Ph.D. DEPARTMENT CHAIR, ENGLISH

What are you reading? I’m planning to reread George Elliot’s Middlemarch. That novel spoke to me so deeply the first time; I’m eager to see how it reads some 25 years later. I’m also looking forward to indulging in the latest Robert Galbraith novel Career of Evil and the soon-to-be a major motion picture Me Before You, preferably in my hammock or on my kayak in the middle of a lake.

What genres are good for the summer? Classics, big novels and things we can’t indulge in during the more demanding work seasons. Ron Chernow’s 800-plus-page biography Alexander Hamilton is one example. (I’ve only been able to listen to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s soundtrack.)

But summer is also lighter, more playful. So a good mystery, a weepy romance novel and an excellent whodunnit also appeal.

What should students read? I most often recommend Willa Cather’s My Antonia to my Midwestern undergraduates. No one makes the tall grass prairie come alive with light, and darkness, the way she can.

You’ve been scaling mountains for years, and climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2012. What’s next? I go to Colorado

every year to hike one or two 14,000-foot mountains with a friend. It’s our “bucket list” item. We are up to 13.

There are 53 total!

What do you bring? Sunblock, lots of water (or drinks with electrolytes), healthy snacks (nuts and dried fruit), a cellphone with GPS technology (great for taking pictures at the summit too!) and rain gear.

What’s your advice for not getting lost? Confirm that you are at the right trailhead and, when in doubt, think twice before starting out. I once spent an entire day hiking horizontally in the Canadian Rockies. We were lucky to find our way down after several thwarted attempts to find our way up.

Favorite short hike? Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, Arizona. There are two trails to choose from that vary in distance and difficulty.

Where would you go if you took Friday afternoon off?

Tamarack Nature Center with my kids, Liam, 8, and Lucy, 6. Our next stop would be the library or our favorite bookshop, The Wild Rumpus or Micawber’s. Finally, no afternoon is complete without a stop for ice cream! Both of them would have chocolate ice cream — Liam’s with caramel sauce and Lucy’s with chocolate sauce.

Favorite historical place? Firefighters Hall and Museum in Minneapolis. My kids can try on the boots, jackets and hats that firemen wear, and ride an older fire truck.

There is also an outdoor section where they can practice putting out a fire with a hose (no real fires, of course).

You’re the lead vocalist in your family band (since the age of nine). Where do you sing? Churches, parks,

campgrounds and rock concert venues — such as Skyway Theatre and Pure Rock Studios — in Minnesota, South

Dakota and Switzerland. We perform annually at the Black Hills Children’s Home, and we’ve traveled with The Extreme Tour over the summers. This year, we’re staying local.

Favorite spots for live music? First Avenue in Minneapolis and Sonshine Festival in Somerset, Wisconsin. I’ve also been to the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand. But I prefer smaller venues that play mostly local bands and where nothing separates the fans from the stage.

Any advice for music fans? Always talk to the artist, if you have the chance. Ask us what we’re working on or tell us something personal. I’m more likely to remember you if you have a real conversation with me.

epending on the era at St. Catherine University, the state of intercollegiate athletics was either excellent or substandard. In the late 1970s, St. Kate’s was an athletics powerhouse; in the 1980s, as the effects of Title IX took hold, not so much. But the tide is turning. The Wildcats have planted the seeds to return as a competitive force, and they’re growing much faster than anticipated.

In 1972, when Congress enacted Title IX, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity, co-ed high schools and colleges poured resources into women’s athletics to level the playing field for all students. As a women’s college, St. Kate’s wasn’t required to meet this equality mandate. The Wildcats faltered in the 1980s and early 1990s, because rival teams flourished with better facilities and expanded budgets. In the mid 1990s, St. Kate’s began the process of rebuilding its once proud athletic tradition. Since then, the number of student-athletes on the University’s varsity roster has grown by more than 400 percent and four varsity teams have been added. The studentathletes and coaches during this rebuilding phase did the hard work of getting St. Kate’s back on the map.

Two years ago, Athletics Director Eric Stacey decided it was time to raise the bar of competitive success, and the department hatched Project 60.

It’s goal — to improve the University’s standing in the MIAC All-Sports Competition by earning 60 allsports points — is just one part of St. Kate’s 2020 Strategic Plan, which calls for a commitment to enriching the experience of student-athletes and elevating the competitiveness in varsity programs.

“Athletics offers an outside view into the University,” says Stacey. “The success of our student-athletes impacts St. Kate’s image, both locally and regionally.”

In fall 2015, 20 percent of first-year students in the College for Women were student-athletes. As a cohort, St. Kate’s student-athletes have higher graduation rates and higher retention rates than the general student body.

They are also active and engaged long after they graduate.

For example, Nikki Burg Dockendorff ’07 is one of 10 former athletes — each representing a different sport — who serve on the Alumnae Council’s Athletics Committee.

And let’s not forget the coaches. They are one of the biggest reason student-athletes choose to attend St. Kate’s.

REAP WHAT WE SOW Any college coach will tell you that competitive advantage starts with recruiting. Without the right talent, success is difficult to achieve. As the athletics director, Stacey hires the coaching staff. To find the right people, he diligently recruits, just as his coaches do.

“When there’s an open coaching position, I need to find someone who fits with our culture and buys into our goals,” he explains. “If a person isn’t hungry and driven to succeed, he or she probably isn’t going to do well at St. Kate’s.”

Soccer Head Coach Chris Citowicki met all of Stacey’s requirements. Hired late in 2011 with no time to recruit players, Citowicki worked with the players already on the roster to start building a foundation of success. The Wildcats struggled, winning just one game. Despite the lack of success on the pitch, Citowicki remained optimistic. He kept talking to his team about creating a culture that would bring future success. He recruited skilled and dedicated student-athletes who believed in his mantra of “dream, work, achieve.”

“On my recruiting visit, I saw a game where St. Kate’s lost 5-1,” recalls Elly Leyva ’16. “I still couldn’t wait to play for the team. I had been told I could make an impact.” To get Leyva — and eight other players who also graduated this May — to St. Kate’s, Citowicki sold them a dream five years ago. He said they would be the ones to get St. Kate’s to the MIAC playoffs. And they did.

The team went from 1-17 in 2011 to 9-8 in 2012, and was named the most improved team in the nation. In

2015, the Wildcats had the most wins in program history, advancing to the MIAC playoffs for the first time in University’s history.

Today, Wildcat soccer draws interest from many top recruits. In fact, Stacey says the incoming class for fall 2016 is the most talented ever, and Citowicki calls the players committed for fall 2017 “absolutely unbelievable.”

“Chris is always pushing his athletes to work harder and achieve more,” adds Stacey, “but at the same time, he’s kept it fun and inspirational.”

“When I was recruited, Chris said he wouldn’t just work on me as a soccer player but he would help me grow as a human being,” says Ellen Kokes ’16. “I would leave the program a stronger person. I really couldn’t say no.”

As much as wins on the field matter, they aren’t Citowicki’s most important measure of achievement.

“Are we graduating good people who are going to thrive?

That’s it,” he replies, when asked how he monitors success.

“I want to create winners in life.”

GROWING WINNERS Soccer isn’t the only Wildcat program experiencing record-setting success.

Softball, under the direction of third-year Head Coach Colleen Powers, is also making history. The Wildcats went 34-11 in 2016, earning the most wins in program history. The team made the MIAC Playoffs and the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever.

The golf program, launched in 2011, is another happy story. The Wildcats finished third in the MIAC last fall, and are ranked No. 15 nationally.

“The success of our golf team is incredible,” says Stacey.

“It’s beyond what I ever dreamed we would have this quickly when developing the program just four years ago.”

St. Kate’s athletic history has definitely had its ups and downs, but Stacey is confident the program will continue its upward trajectory.

This season, just two years after setting the Project 60 goal, the University earned its highest number of allsports competition points. “We made it to 59, just one point short of our goal,” says Stacey. “To get so close this quickly is an amazing accomplishment.”

X-RAY DU JOUR

BY PAULINE OO So, how many people does it take to position a 17th century painting on an x-ray machine? If it’s “Saint Mark the Evangelist,” the answer is five: two art handlers, two radiological technologists and a conservator.

The portrait, attributed to Dutch painter Jan Lievens and belonging to the Birmingham Museum of Art, marked the University’s third partnership with the Midwest Art Conservation Center. Last year, the Minneapolis-based nonprofit sent Scott Haglund, assistant professor of radiography, another painting and, in 2014, multiple Chinese artifacts from the Bronze Age. “I jump at the opportunity to be involved,” he says, “because how often can you say ‘I’ve imaged some very old and expensive artwork?’

But, more importantly, because I want our students to experience an avenue where they can manipulate the technology beyond the medical field.”

In this case, x-rays were crucial for its conservation.

“It’s pretty surreal to see art here,” remarks Shannon Mays, a first-year radiography student who poked her head in after class. “We were learning to image feet on this machine just yesterday!”

WHAT’S THE BUZZ?

BY SHARON ROLENC 2016 may be the Year of the Monkey according to the Chinese zodiac but, at St. Kate’s, it will go down in history as the year of the bee.

Bees are dying at an alarming rate — a whopping 70 percent of their population wiped out due to colony collapse disorder, in which masses of bees disappear from hives. Yet, bees pollinate 75 percent of the world’s crops.

These include dozens of commonly consumed foods, including apples, cauliflower, green beans, cashews and walnuts. Even coffee and cocoa — imagine making it through finals without that triple latte or mocha!

When St. Kate’s BioClub learned these facts, the members knew they had to get into the bee business. (Incidentally, the Year of the Monkey is seen as a fortuitous time to start a new venture.)

The students connected with The Beez Kneez, a Minneapolis honey producer, to learn more about hosting a hive and soon, with club advisor Chris Palahniuk’s help, brought forth a proposal to University administrators to bring bees on campus.

In May, Beez Kneez owner Kristy Allen transported two hives — via bicycle — from her apiary to the roof of Fontbonne Hall. St. Kate’s is the first among the Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities to host a hive.

The buzz attracted other student groups along the way, like the Food Justice Coalition, a longtime advocate of a campus community garden to provide another healthy, affordable food source for students. The idea of the bees’ role in food security immediately attracted Alexa Harnagel ’17, who leads the group. “What’s so exciting about this project is that we can actually make a difference,” she says.

Another exciting payoff? Honey!

St. Kate’s will have jars of honey uniquely flavored by our flowers if the hives thrive. They’ll carry the label: St. Catherine University/55105.

So move over monkey, the honeybee reigns this year.

MOBILE MAKEOVER

BY KRISTIN CUMMINGS Been online lately? Well, then you know stkate.edu, the University’s website, is all brand new. With completely renovated navigation, fresh photography and content, and a fully mobile-responsive design, the new site offers an elegant and tech-forward “window” into life and learning at St. Catherine University.

“We’re really excited about our digital presence,” says Blanche (Bea) Abdallah, vice president for external relations. “Aside from being modern and streamlined, today’s website will help us better engage and attract prospective students at every degree level, allow current students access to information they need more quickly, and provide our alumnae and donors with more dynamic ways to stay connected to their University.”

The redesign, which launched on March 11, was no easy feat. St. Kate’s marketing and communications team — working alongside external partners and an internal advisory group — faced down an outdated and oversized existing website, and an undersized pocketbook. “We started with 5,500 pages of material, which was not only unmanageable, but was actually hurting our visibility,” says Abdallah. “Our goal was to reduce total page count to around 1,000, liven up the content to boost interest through search optimization, and do the whole thing within existing budget parameters.”

And do it they did. After 15 months, stkate.edu debuted on budget with about 1,300 pages, opening to nearly immediate increased visibility and external traffic.

“Before the launch, we received approximately 40 inquiries per week on our graduate programs,” notes Greg Steenson, associate dean for admissions and market development.

“Post-launch, with a few minor adjustments, we’re seeing nearly 60 per week. It shows great progress for us.”

Another sign of progress? St. Kate’s Google search position.

In the past, if you typed “Masters in Nursing,” St. Catherine University didn’t appear until the bottom of page three (research shows very few people look beyond page one), making academic programs nearly invisible to prospective applicants. Today, that same term places St. Kate’s at number four on page one. “Something as simple as changing a few words on a page can dramatically impact total site visits and inquiries,” adds Steenson.

Early successes aside, much work remains. “Students live online every day,” says Abdallah. “In order to compete and stay well-connected, our team must refresh information and imagery, as well as upgrade technologies. And we need to do it daily.”

And do it they will.

Each year, St. Kate’s recognizes outstanding graduates who lead and influence in the best St. Catherine tradition.

Here are our 2016 Alumnae Award winners:

Throughout her life, MARY ELLEN KENNEDY has taken care of others. From her career as an elementary school teacher to her extensive volunteer work, she has made a difference in many lives.

MYSEE CHANG is this year’s recipient of the Rising Star Award, recognizing young alumnae making an impact.

In 2014, she was named a Fulbright Fellow and spent 14 months as an English teacher at Savannakhet University in Laos.

Her work included creating the curriculum for two courses focused on Asian and Western culture. Mysee also volunteered for VivNcuas, Sisterhood for Development in Vientiane. There, she wrote grant proposals and tutored program participants in English. “I had a very full year in Laos,” she says. “It was an amazing experience.

I grew and developed so much.”

In 2015, Mysee joined College Possible as a program coordinator. She manages eight coaches at Twin Cities high schools who mentor 360 low-income students seeking college admission. “I often think about how I will make change in the world,” she says. “Young people are the ones who will solve many of our problems. I want to empower them to find solutions.”

Mysee joined the Alumnae Council in 2015, eager to give back to her alma mater.

“My time at St. Kate’s was transformational. I made it through college because so many people reached out their hands to help me when I was a student,” she says.

“I want to do the same for others.”

Mary Ellen had a 35-year career teaching fifth and sixth grade. She always took the time to care for each student in her class. “No matter how a student might struggle, she is an important person and she is worthwhile,” says Mary Ellen. “I’ve had students tell me some of the little things I did really meant something to them.

She invested in building one-on-one relationships with many types of people. She has participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters, tutored students at Christo Rey Catholic School, tutored adult ESL students preparing for job interviews and citizenship exams, and mentored women at the Shakopee Correctional Facility. She is also a charter member of the Ignation Volunteer Corps.

Mary Ellen says volunteer work is the thing that makes her happiest. “It’s so important for me to be doing something for someone else,” she says.

Mary Ellen has kept close ties to her alma mater, serving on her class leadership team and Reunion planning committees. “My time at St. Kate’s was so worthwhile,” she notes, “and I like to give back.”

HEALTHCARE LEADER AND PHILANTHROPIST

JUNE KLAPHAKE formed her consulting business in 2002, after turning down a full-time job offer that wasn’t the right fit. Fourteen years later, Klaphake Communications is thriving.

JUDI DRUKE TESKE’S career in healthcare is long and accomplished. After St. Kate’s, she moved to Washington, D.C. and worked as a medical technologist. In the years that followed, she served as a lobbyist, a fundraiser, a political appointee and a leader at the medical technology corporation Amgen.

As a change consultant, June helps clients through complex organizational changes. She’s able to strip a situation down to the basics and put together a plan to move her client forward. As a mentor to young professionals, she stresses the importance of participation in professional associations, and taking opportunities to learn.

“Invest in education, and do it regularly,” she advises.

“It builds confidence.”

Running her own business gave June the flexibility she needed to raise her children, Charlie (20), Ahna (18), Elizabeth (15) and Leah (9), who all participated in scouting. June continues to serve as a troop leader and volunteer coordinator for Girl Scouts at Nativity of Our Lord School in St. Paul.

“The Girl Scouts is so much more than crafts and hiking,” she says. “It’s a leadership program. It’s developing little girls into strong women. It’s a natural fit for me.”

June is thankful for role models who not only mentored her at St. Kate’s but taught her how to do the same for others. “I left St. Kate’s with a sense that if I put my mind to any task, I can do it,” she says.

“My grounding in science and healthcare from St. Kate’s gave me the wings to fly,” she explains.

Today, Judi remains active with the Providence Health Foundation, and serves as the chair of the advisory council for St. Kate’s Henrietta Schmoll School of Health.

When asked how her alma mater impacted her life, she replies: “In every way possible.”

Judi says St. Kate’s gave her expanded knowledge, grounding in theology and philosophy, critical thinking skills, an appreciation for lifelong learning, and scholarships.

She didn’t know her benefactors’ names, but she knew their impact. She established the Judi Teske Endowed Scholarship Fund to return the favor.

She also generously supports other organizations. Growing up in Belle Plaine, Minnesota, Judi experienced community service in a natural, organic way. Neighbors helped neighbors. At St. Kate’s, she encountered the same acts of generosity.

“The CSJs were incredible examples,” she remembers.

“They were strong, well-educated and had can-do attitudes. We knew we were being educated not just for ourselves, but for the world.”

VIRGINIA SCHUBERT ’57 published To Sing with the Angels: A History of the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale. The book chronicles the history of the choral society, which has sung regularly with professional orchestras for the Latin High Mass at the Church of Saint Agnes in St. Paul since 1974. Virginia, a Chorale singer, is president of its board.

KATHLEEN DONNELLY ’69 wrote Women of Influence, published in January 2016. The book tells the stories of honorary alumnae of Russell Sage College in New York.

Kathleen is a professor emerita of chemistry at that college.

1970–79

ANN WILLIAMS BUSSEY ’70 was appointed by Governor Mark Dayton to serve on the Minnesota Rural Health Advisory Committee. Her appointment as a consumer member runs through January 2020.

MARIE-THÉRÈSE CANIAUX REED ’71 was conferred the rank of officer in the French government’s Ordre National du Mérite for her work in developing Franco-American friendship. She was a French professor at St. Catherine from 1963 to 1975 and established a summer program between St. Kate’s and the University of Rennes that ran from 1978 to 1988.

A KATIE ALUMNAE NETWORK How do you add value to the world? That was the question that drew 150 people to register for the most recent Katies Connect event. Speaker Gina Soleil MAOL’08, says, “Your value is measured in acts of love, toward others and toward yourself.”

Soleil, author of Fuel Your Business: How to Energize Your People, Ignite Action and Drive Profits, was the second speaker in the new Alumnae Relations series.

KatiesConnect is held twice each year to unite St. Kate’s graduates and provide inspiration applicable to both professional and personal arenas. Alumnae in six corporate chapters help to host the event and recruit attendees, bringing together Katies who work at Twin Cities corporations such as Target, 3M and Medtronic.

This fall, radio personality and musician Jearlyn Steele is the featured speaker.

his summer, physics students will once again launch weather balloons reaching altitudes up to 21 miles above the earth’s surface — that’s three times higher than planes fly! The giant latex balloon will carry a parachute, a GPS tracking system, a GoPro camera and two insulated boxes filled with data-collection equipment.
