We have three apprenticeship routes available Build & Repair Apprenticeship As part of our Build & Repair team you’ll maintain existing gas equipment and lay new gas supply pipes to make sure homes and businesses continue to receive a safe and reliable gas supply now and in the future.

You’ll also help with the delivery of our gas pipe upgrade and capital investment programmes so we can keep the gas flowing and make sure the gas network is fit for the future

 

The Year in Industry (YINI) The Year in Industry (YINI) programme offers students the opportunity to gain professional development by working at a reputable company.

We help place students in top UK companies every year, including Shell, Rolls-Royce, EDF, Network Rail and GKN. Typically, the programme lasts for 12 months and is a paid placement.

We have placements for students interested in all areas of engineering, science, IT, e-commerce, business, marketing, finance and logistics.

Our placements offer students the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. Around a quarter of all our students are sponsored through university each year and many of our 300 partner companies see The Year in Industry as an important part of their graduate recruitment programme.

FIND OUT ABOUT SUMMER VOLUNTEERING Volunteering in your local library is a fantastic way to keep busy over the summer. You’ll have the opportunity to gain new skills and work experience for your CV, and you’ll have fun helping children to read more at the same time.

OKAY… WHAT EXACTLY IS THE SUMMER READING CHALLENGE? The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to read six books during the long summer holiday.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING AS A VOLUNTEER? There are loads of different ways to help with the Challenge. Some of the things volunteers do include:    

Helping staff to run the Challenge Talking to children about the books they’ve been reading Creating exciting library displays Planning and running activities or craft sessions Planning and running celebration events for other volunteers

HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED? The Summer Reading Challenge runs in most libraries, so just drop in to the one you want to volunteer in and ask if they have any opportunities for you to get involved this summer. Libraries start to recruit for the challenge from March, but some may have opportunities year round.

You also have a minimum of 2 IGCSEs/GCSEs in STEM subjects, at grade 6/B or above, one of which is in maths.

A keen interest in programming, computing and technology is essential. Although previous experience in coding would be advantageous, it’s not required as you’ll have the opportunity to develop these skills on the apprenticeship.

2018 Foundation Apprentice Programme Job Purpose The UK Power Networks Apprenticeship Programme, endorsed by E&U Skills and Accredited by the IET, provides the opportunity for individuals to become fully trained, qualified and competent “craft” persons in an electrical distribution industry in one of the following trade’s cable jointing, overhead lines or electrical plant fitting.

Principal Accountabilities: Apprentices are expected to learn all aspects of their chosen craft and apply the knowledge, skills and techniques gained through the Apprenticeship Programme competently, safely and in accordance with Network standards.

Apprentices will follow a Trailblazer Apprenticeship Framework which will include a Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering and a competency based qualification in Electrical Power Engineering whilst on the Programme. Apprentices are expected to undertake duties in accordance with their chosen craft: Jointers - Jointing duties, such as the maintenance & restoration of electrical supplies on the UK Power Networks distribution system, by means of carrying out jointing repairs on the HV and LV cable networks under the supervision of the area team as appropriate.

Overhead Linespersons - Overhead linesperson duties, such as the maintenance & restoration of electrical supplies on the UK Power Networks distribution system and carrying out reinforcements and new connections under the supervision of the area team as appropriate.

Fitters - Maintenance fitter duties, such as electrical fitting activities on plant (construction, maintenance and fault rectification as required) under the supervision of the area team as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience: Suitable applicants will be new to the power distribution industry and have recently achieved or be on course to achieve GCSE’s Grades A to D or 3 to 9 in English, Maths and Science/Technology or equivalent or higher level secondary education qualifications such as A levels or BTEC.

Research without Borders – Interactive Exhibition

Wednesday 9th May, 10.30-12pm Colston Hall, Colston Street, BS1 5AR Sixth Form students are invited to attend this free interactive research exhibition to get inspired by some of the cutting-edge research underway by 100 PhD students at the University of Bristol.

The exhibition is a fantastic chance to get inspired by interactive exhibits on a huge range of topics - from the latest advancements in health research, quantum engineering and robotics, to cutting-edge work related to the environment, socioeconomics and culture. It is also a chance to meet the researchers themselves, find out about their work and what doing a PhD involves.

EPQ Mentoring Fair for Sixth Form Students Wednesday 14th November, 1.30-3.00pm Wills Memorial Building, University of Bristol Save the date! The EPQ Mentoring Fair returns for 2018. For students completing the EPQ, this Mentoring Fair provides you with the opportunity to meet and discuss your project with a researcher in the University working in a similar area to your project. Small groups of students will be allocated to one researcher who will give advice on research skills, analysing results, report writing and other subject-specific support.

Quantum in the Summer – Summer School Monday 6th - Friday 10th August 2018 University of Bristol The Centre for Quantum Photonics are giving students age 16+ the opportunity to spend a week at the University, getting an insight into the use of light in photonics, spanning optics and quantum computing. The summer school is aimed at students with a keen interest in physics and engineering who would like to tackle material beyond the curriculum.

Students will also have the opportunity to find out about the work of quantum physics researchers and career options in the field.

Computer Science and Creative Technologies Workshops Wednesday 6 June 2018 The Computer Science and Creative Technologies department at the University of the West of England will be running a series of workshops aimed at year 12 students/1st year BTEC students on Wednesday 6th June 2018 between 9:45am and 2:45pm.

The aim of these workshops is to provide an introduction to a range of computing topics which can be studied further at A Level, BTEC and at Degree level.

Students will be able to attend 2 “hands on” workshops on the day: one in the morning and one in the afternoon. A tour of the campus will be provided along with an opportunity to meet with current students to talk about University life.

UWE Law Taster Day Wednesday 6 June 2018 Through informative and interactive sessions hosted in our new state-of-the-art building, the UWE 'Law Taster Day' offers students studying AS/A Levels or BETECs a chance to consider and explore the study and practice of law. The sessions are challenging but fun, and aim to support the students in developing their legal knowledge and skills such as communication and presentation, reasoned argumentation, creativity, innovation, decision-making and confidence. Students will also have the opportunity to interact with current UWE law students to find out first-hand about studying law and university life.

Thus, participation at this event not only provides useful experience for UCAS applications but also give your students insight into life as a HE student.

North Bristol NHS Trust Research Foundation Vacation Research Scholarship Guidance for applicants Aim The aim of the North Bristol NHS Trust Research Vacation Scholarship is to provide promising students with hands-on experience of research at NBT, with the aim of encouraging the applicant to consider a career in research.

Awards The scholarships will be for a minimum of four and a maximum of 6 weeks in July/August 2018.

A stipend of £50 per week for up to 6 weeks plus research costs as defined by the NBT research team.

The internship will be based within an existing NBT research unit/team.

Eligibility Applicants must be at school or further education college within the UK or Republic of Ireland and should be an A Level Student

Application process An application form should be completed and submitted to the Research Foundation Secretary – Karen.evely@nbt.nhs.uk by Friday 18th May 2018

Submissions must also include a supporting statement/recommendation from the student’s current tutor.

Future Quest and St Brendan’s Sixth Form College are looking to understand the expectations and attitudes of local students in Further Education who are considering progressing to Higher Education (university or college) while living at home – is this you? Scholarship Cupboards Direct are proud to announce we have just launched our official 'Cupboards Direct Fund', awarded on a yearly basis.

All students around the United Kingdom currently (or prospectively) studying on business degrees, will be able to apply for this fund. Available to students on both undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees. Through the scholarship, in September of every year, we will award £1000 to assist with course fees.

Eligibility Requirements: You must be studying within the United Kingdom You must be applying for or currently studying on a business degree.

Alternatively, you may also be studying on a combined business degree.

Applicants must provide: 

Proof that the applicant will be or is currently studying



A 500-word written letter, addressing why the applicant has chosen to study on a business degree and what they hope to achieve in their career


