The Young Journalist Programme UCL - Sunday 29th April 2018 The programme - spearheaded by a writer from the Financial Times - brings world-class journalists from some of the biggest names in the industry to UCL to provide students with everything they would seek to gain from work experience at the heart of the media world.

Students will gain a fully-interactive experience through a mixture of presentations, case studies and personal question time. The full suite of journalistic disciplines will be covered - print, broadcasting, documentary, digital, and investigative.

Apprentice Scheme - Bath Rotork values its apprentices and believes in investing in its own talent in order to succeed. Rotork's apprenticeship scheme has been running almost since the company began 60 years ago. During this time many of these apprentices have become well known figures in Rotork.

Many apprentices have progressed through technical sales, but others have taken routes such as electronics, product development and service.

Rotork offers three apprenticeship schemes: Engineering apprenticeship 2. Craft apprenticeship 3. Administration apprenticeship Each apprentice programme has been designed to develop each individual in order for them to progress internally.

TRINITY HALL OUTREACH EVENTS  SOUTH WEST REGIONAL TEACHER BRIEFING: Trinity Hall and Robinson College are running an information and professional development event in Swindon on Friday 9 March, 5-7pm. This free event aims to help teachers and HE Advisors support academic students to make strong applications to highly selective universities. It is particularly appropriate for Key Stage 5 teachers and HE Advisers. Find out more and book here.  TRINITY HALL SUBJECT OPEN DAYS: Trinity Hall will run an Arts & Humanities Subject Open Day on the 3rd April and a Sciences Subject Open Day on the 4th April, both based at Trinity Hall. These are primarily aimed at students who might consider applying to Cambridge and would like to know more about the University, the Colleges, courses available, and the admissions process. Students can book a place on either or both Open Days on our website, and we also have a limited amount of free accommodation available to attendees from state schools/colleges in Bristol and our other Link Areas. If your students would like to book accommodation, they must complete this online form by the end of Monday 20th March (as well as booking a place at the Open Day on our website). This accommodation is first-come, first-served. 

VISITS TO SCHOOLS/COLLEGES: Please get in touch if you would like me to visit your college. I will be in the Bristol area after 2pm on 8 March and before 10.30am or after 1pm on 9 March, and can meet with you and/or run sessions with students in any course groups. It is your choice as to whether a session’s focus is on Cambridge and Oxford specifically, or universities in general.

They provide Year 12 students and their teachers/HE advisers with up-to-date information on courses available, the application and admissions procedures and student life at both Universities. Booking is now open: places are free, but must be booked in advance by a teacher.  Cambridge Sutton Trust Summer Schools: Week-long, subject-specific residentials for Year 12s, targeted at students from backgrounds less likely to enter Higher Education. With support from the Department for International Trade and a number of education experts, they are looking for a dynamic website person who can help improve their existing web provision and deliver an interactive website that attracts users from around the globe. Work Observation Placements for potential medical students For several years now we have offered 36 work observation placements in the early summer (weeks beginning 2nd July, 9th July and 16Th July 2018) for school and college pupils. These placements are designed for pupils who are just finishing year 12 and are considering applying through UCAS to medical schools in Autumn 2018. Up to six of these places will be reserved for graduates considering mature entry to medicine.

The programme involves a four day allocation to observe the work of various departments within the hospital and the community. This will be based at the new Southmead hospital and involve exposure to outpatient clinics, ward rounds, the operating theatre and general practice. More importantly the allocations allow participants to meet medical students, doctors, and other members of the healthcare team to learn about what a career in medicine entails.

These courses will be of little added value to pupils who have already attended GP surgeries and / or hospital outpatient clinics and I would reiterate how grateful I would be if you could point this out to the more enthusiastic among your students and ask them to read the attached notes carefully.

If offered a place, candidates must commit to attending all four days of their attachment and to attending the hospital beforehand for occupational health clearance, contract completion, and production of ID badges. No charge for this will be made, but graduate applicants may be asked to pay for CRB clearance.

Applicants will need to make their own travel arrangements, including any visits to the General Practitioners’ surgeries.

2018 BRITISH AVIATION EXPERIENCE Students attending the programme will experience many aspects of life in the aviation industry, including flying lessons on light aircraft, Boeing 747 simulator, and emergency training with British Airways. Students will also learn about the maintenance and engineering side of the industry by visiting maintenance facilities and attending talks with professionals. There will also be visits to aviation museums, an airline headquarters as well as some exciting recreational activities, visits to London and Cardiff. The students’ accommodation will be in Oxford convenient to Oxford Airport where the flying lessons will take place.

This is an excellent way to help young people to decide whether they would like a career in aviation and provides a wonderful experience for the participants.

Clinical Engineering Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship will give you an opening into the world of physical science in healthcare, through the work of the Clinical Engineering section of the Medical Physics & Bioengineering department.

You will progress to a Level 2 qualification in Healthcare Science. Learning is split between formal training sessions and ‘on-the-job’ training in a range of scientific, engineering and healthcare activities.

There will be clinical, technical and administrative elements to your work.

Examples include collecting patient breath samples during Hydrogen/ Methane Breath Test Clinic; acting as assistant and chaperone in the Gastro-Intestinal (GI) Manometry clinic; calibrating and repairing various medical devices in the hospital such as manual blood pressure devices and audiology equipment; involvement in design of products and fabrication of mechanical and electrical/electronic articles; use of the hospital IT systems; telephoning patients prior to clinic days; keeping records of activity in accordance with the department quality system.

Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship, there will be an employment opportunity within the Clinical Engineering section as a qualified Healthcare Science Assistant.

You also have a minimum of 2 IGCSEs/GCSEs in STEM subjects, at grade 6/B or above, one of which is in maths.

A keen interest in programming, computing and technology is essential. Although previous experience in coding would be advantageous, it’s not required as you’ll have the opportunity to develop these skills on the apprenticeship.

2018 Foundation Apprentice Programme

Job Purpose The UK Power Networks Apprenticeship Programme, endorsed by E&U Skills and Accredited by the IET, provides the opportunity for individuals to become fully trained, qualified and competent “craft” persons in an electrical distribution industry in one of the following trade’s cable jointing, overhead lines or electrical plant fitting.

Principal Accountabilities: Apprentices are expected to learn all aspects of their chosen craft and apply the knowledge, skills and techniques gained through the Apprenticeship Programme competently, safely and in accordance with Network standards.

Apprentices will follow a Trailblazer Apprenticeship Framework which will include a Certificate in Electrical Power Engineering and a competency based qualification in Electrical Power Engineering whilst on the Programme. Apprentices are expected to undertake duties in accordance with their chosen craft: Jointers - Jointing duties, such as the maintenance & restoration of electrical supplies on the UK Power Networks distribution system, by means of carrying out jointing repairs on the HV and LV cable networks under the supervision of the area team as appropriate.

Overhead Linespersons - Overhead linesperson duties, such as the maintenance & restoration of electrical supplies on the UK Power Networks distribution system and carrying out reinforcements and new connections under the supervision of the area team as appropriate.

Fitters - Maintenance fitter duties, such as electrical fitting activities on plant (construction, maintenance and fault rectification as required) under the supervision of the area team as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience: Suitable applicants will be new to the power distribution industry and have recently achieved or be on course to achieve GCSE’s Grades A to D or 3 to 9 in English, Maths

McDonald’s Management Degree Apprenticeship McDonald’s School Leaver programme lasts five years and gives students the opportunity to follow a structured training programme, which leads to valuable qualifications. At the end of it, participants will have gained loads of practical experience and progressed through different management roles. They will have helped make real business decisions and could even go on to manage their own restaurant.

There is a financial advantage, too. The School Leaver Management Degree Apprenticeship is a great opportunity to earn while you learn. You won’t have the tuition fees, or the student loan, but you will be paid a competitive salary that increases as you progress through the programme.

The programme initially leads to a level 3 apprenticeship. You then have the opportunity to gain a BA (hons) degree in business management and retail, and chartered manager status with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI).

Dozens jobs are already available to apply for on the website, with new ones added every week by employers, partners and voluntary organisations who have signed up to the Proud to Care Bristol Charter .The website also features careers advice and case studies of others already working in the sector, providing a one stop shop for both recruiters and jobseekers.

We have recently launched Business Insight Week 2018 with opportunities across our Cardiff and Bristol offices.

The programme has been highly popular in past years, attracting a wide variety of students from different backgrounds, having been promoted across a range of local target schools including schools that meet social mobility criteria. This August we are planning on taking 20 Year 12 (Lower 6th) students into our offices, inviting them to spend a week getting to know us across all LoS. Positive Action Scheme - BAME 2018 About The Positive Action Scheme The Guardian believes there should be a better representation of our diverse society in the media, and each summer runs a work-experience scheme for those considering a career in journalism.

This year our London office is running a scheme for BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) applicants.

Up to 12 placements in total are offered, each initially for two weeks over the summer (June-September).

Successful applicants will learn about different aspects of the profession - gaining an insight into the workings of a number of sections across the newspaper and website, such as Features, Society and Multimedia.

You’ll also have an experienced journalist as a mentor to offer careers advice.

At the end of the two weeks, we offer each participant a chance to come back and spend one more week with the desk that they felt was most useful and interesting for them. The third week can take place at a time to suit the desk and the participant.

Criteria To be considered for a placement you must be at least 18, an EEA resident with the right to work or train in the UK and able to demonstrate a genuine interest in for journalism – for example, serious involvement in student journalism, work experience on local/specialist media, or an impressive personal website or blog. The aim of the scheme is to introduce aspiring journalists to an editorial environment. For this reason we regret that professional journalists are not eligible to apply for these placements. Those who have received a previous placement at GNM are not eligible.

Please attach all of the following within ONE document: Part 1) Your current CV. Part 2) A covering note explaining in 150 words why you would like the placement, stating clearly why you qualify for a minority-focused scheme and how you would add diversity to our organisation.

Part 3) Please write a 400-word feature or comment article on a current issue which you believe will be of interest to Guardian readers.

Deadline for receipt of applications is Monday 26th March 2018 for this scheme.

Scholarship Cupboards Direct are proud to announce we have just launched our official 'Cupboards Direct Fund', awarded on a yearly basis.

All students around the United Kingdom currently (or prospectively) studying on business degrees, will be able to apply for this fund. Available to students on both undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees. Through the scholarship, in September of every year, we will award £1000 to assist with course fees.

Eligibility Requirements: You must be studying within the United Kingdom You must be applying for or currently studying on a business degree.

Recent Developments

Bath Bursary For undergraduate students studying any subject full time. This is for up to £3000 per year of study for UK students who have a household income of £22,000 or below. You must also meet one or more of a set of widening participation criteria.

Local Student Start Up Award If a student is eligible for the Bath Bursary and they live locally to Bath they will ALSO be awarded an additional £1,000 in the first instalment of the bursary as a start-up fund for coming to university. The local area covered is huge including all of South Wales, Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire .

Bath Gold Scholarship This awards £5,000 per year of study (not including any unpaid placement year and study abroad year) – these are new awards instituted to celebrated the 50th anniversary of the University last year. Associated with this award are compulsory enrichment activities to develop skills in general such as 50 hours of volunteering or fundraising per year, mentoring by alumni, skills training sessions, extra support. The criteria for eligibility are very similar to the Bath Bursary but the awards are discretionary so not everyone will necessarily be awarded one even if eligible.

Students cannot be awarded both the Bath Bursary and the Bath Gold Award, however both are definitely gifts, they do NOT need to be repaid.

We have an exciting opportunity for sixth formers to get involved in the running of one of the largest businesses in our region. This is the first year of Bristol Water’s Youth Board which brings the views of young adults into the decision-making they do to plan their future operations.

We’re recruiting 20 individuals who live in the Bristol Water region to join the board, which will allow their voices to be heard at executive level and provide a unique opportunity for them to kick-start a career in the world of business.

How will your sixth formers benefit?

They will have real influence on the decisions made by senior management as well as: see inside the workings of a major business meet other like-minded sixth formers from around the region get a formal reference for use in UCAS or apprenticeship applications get a £100 reward for taking part.

What’s involved?

The Youth Board will attend board meetings on two occasions, Monday 29th January 2018 and Monday 19th March 2018, at Bristol Water’s headquarters in Bristol. The meetings will start at 10am so applicants need to be able to get to Bristol for this time. We will reimburse individuals for all travel expenses to board meetings. The meetings will finish at approximately 4pm and will include a mix of briefings from senior executives about the business and the challenges it faces, and facilitated problem-solving exercises.

The Youth Board will be given real issues to think about and will work in teams to come up with solutions. Between the two board meetings, members will prepare for team presentations at the second meeting, and also complete a number of online tasks.
