National Apprenticeship Week 3rd-9th February!

University isn't the only option for you when you leave school/college. An apprenticeship could be the best way to gain experience and qualifications, all while earning a wage.

Higher and degree apprenticeships give you the chance to gain a bachelor's or even a master's degree - and your employer will pay the tuition fees.

An apprenticeship is a job with training - which means you'll get paid and work towards relevant qualifications as well. It can be a fast-track route into your chosen career - no tuition fees, no waiting around before you start work: just training in a paid job from day 1. If you have some idea of what you want to do in your career, you should see if there's an apprenticeship available in that career path.

Apprenticeships aren't better for everyone. If you want to study an academic subject like English or history, there won't be an apprenticeship for you. Similarly, if you're drawn to the more scholarly aspects of your subject, university may be a better choice.

Never Such an Innocence Competition 19/20 “Impact of Conflict on Communities” At Never Such Innocence we aim to give children and young people across the world a voice on war and conflict. We offer opportunities to reflect on conflict throughout history and today through poetry, art, song and speeches.

For the 2019/20 academic year, the Never Such Innocence competition will be bigger than ever! We have expanded our focus to include all conflicts throughout history and today, and have broadened the age range to 9-18. We are also delighted to open a new speechwriting category!

This year’s theme is ‘The Impact of Conflict on Communities’ – We invite young people all across the world to write a poem, speech, or song, or create a piece of art reflecting on how a conflict has or is affecting a community. This conflict could be past or present; international, national or local. We also have two bonus categories, ‘75’ and ‘A Fight for Freedom’, with special prizes—more information about these on the website.

The retreat is at the beautiful Folly Farm, just outside Bristol. This is Knowle West Media Centre's fourth retreat that we've run and we can firmly say that these experiences can be life changing for the young people who attend.

What will you be doing?

During the programme you will learn about social action and how to develop their ideas into a campaign in just one day, you will work on what your passion is and what you really care about.

Then you will learn how to design artwork for your campaign, like a logo or a tagline which you will learn how use a laser cutter, digital embroidery machine & vinyl cutter to create products to advertise your campaign! You will also learn how to use photography and web development to get your voice out there!!! You will also work with brilliant mentors and meet inspiring professional women!

No previous digital or tech experience is necessary.

Work as a police community support officer (PCSO) can be very exciting, as each day brings new challenges. You will be involved in the fight against a range of crime and disorder problems.

Just some of the tasks you might encounter on any given day are:  contributing to the regeneration of local communities  increasing public safety  dealing with truants, graffiti, abandoned vehicles, litter, missing persons enquiries  helping to support crime victims  controlling crowds at major events, such as football games or concerts.

Opportunities for 3y1’s with The University of Exeter Humanities and Social Sciences Summer Residential Our 4 day, fully funded Year 12 residential event has been designed for students considering studying courses that fall into the category of Humanities or Social Sciences – and in some cases span both. As well as the academic content, participants will gain a first-hand experience of student life – staying in halls, working alongside current University students and trying out some of the extra curricular opportunities available on campus.

The 'A Day In The Life' scheme is an exciting student shadowing programme which brings individuals or small school groups onto campus to gain an insight into life at the University of Exeter by shadowing an undergraduate student for the day.

Accompanied by University of Exeter Student Ambassadors, students have the opportunity to attend undergraduate lectures, seminars and/or other academic sessions, take part in a full campus tour, and have the opportunity to speak to staff and current students about the course, student life, the university, the city, and the careers and opportunities available beyond graduation. Travel expenses for attendees will be reimbursed however they will need to bring their own lunch.

We are a group of medical students from University of Bristol who form a society called MedStart, a group which aims to help students learn about and apply to medicine. We provide some handy tips and workshops, such as practising for the UCAT/ BMAT and MMIs. This event aims to mirrors the MMI interview process, with 10 stations designed to test students on interview topics which could possibly arise during their real interview. Our volunteers will provide helpful feedback for the students, to give them confidence and reflect on how they can improve to demonstrate to future interviewers that they are a great candidate for medicine.

Students that are successful and expected to attend will be contacted by Wednesday 12th February 2020. Secondly, we have brought our e-mentoring scheme back for Spring term! This involves aspiring students being paired to one of our volunteers, a current medical student who will become a mentor. Email addresses will be exchanged and our mentors will be able to provide advice and support about medical school. Mentees are encouraged to ask questions and make the most of the opportunity to speak to someone who has recently gone through the application process and is currently studying at medical school.

We are offering a number of opportunities for keen and enthusiastic individuals to complete a work experience placement in our Bristol office. This is not paid employment, but an opportunity which offers first hand experience into the day-today workings of a law firm. This is a great opportunity for those who are currently studying at sixth form or college and are interested in developing a career in law. The work experience placements will take place for a week between 6th April 2019 – 17th April 2020.

Requirements You must be studying at sixth form/college or have just completed your studies and have: 

Ahead of the opening of applications, AF&RS is hosting a 'try before you apply' recruitment day where you can find out everything you need to know about the process and what it takes to be a firefighter, from fitness, practical assessments and mini-conferences.

The venue opens from 09:30-16:00 and to take full advantage you will need to book a ticket to one of the mini-conference events. Oxford Brooks Summer School As we announced in December the applications for our Discover Brookes 2020 Summer Schools are now open and we have already started to see applications coming in. It provides an action-packed and interactive day where you can learn what a good University application looks like, how to do CPR and control haemorrhage, attend interactive discussions with SWASFT Paramedics and witness an exciting demonstration provided by the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART).

BBC Digital Cities will be returning to Bristol in 2020 with a week-long series of events for the creative industries.

Starting on Saturday 25 January, there will be a full and varied schedule across the week, offering insights and free digital skills training.

Amongst the partners delivering events are BBC Academy with our Digital Skills Day, which includes the chance to find out about podcasting, TikTok, Instagram and filming on your smartphone, BBC Young Reporter, BBC Stem and digital arts and creative conference, Hello Culture Remix, will be making its debut in the city.

Boomsatsuma will once again be opening up their doors for an Ask Me Anything event and Bristol Media's How to Get Your Dream Job event will be taking place at the BBC Bristol. See next page for more information on this.

There will also be a day of events on Thursday 30 January at Watershed. Called Screen Futures, it will feature Bristol UNESCO City of Film, Into Film, ScreenSkills, Cables & Cameras, TEDxBristol, BBC Writersroom, BFI NETWORK, Calling the Shots and BBC Upload and many more fantastic organisations, and will give you the chance to find out what schemes and opportunities they can offer.

Also, recent arrivals to the city - Channel 4 - will be talking about their latest apprenticeships and trainee schemes.

Not to be missed out, tech and digital creators will be able to attend UWE’s Global Game Jam and Bristol City Council’s Hackathon over the two weekends, both returning after successful events last year.

Our apprenticeship scheme has been a fantastic success since launching in our Pension Administration team back in 2018. We initially took on apprentices in our Amersham, Bromsgrove, Cheltenham and Liverpool offices, but have since extended our schemes to now include our Bristol and Leeds offices.

CreatorsXX - Summer School 2020 Will you take part in the next generation of creative innovation? Engineering is far more than building and fixing things – and we want to prove it. From sustainable development and renewable energy to the smart technologies that are revolutionising our lives in areas like healthcare, transport, education and communication, there's a growing need for females who are creative, ambitious and enjoy solving problems in the modern world.

This three-day programme from 3 – 5 August invites young females in years 10, 11 and 12 to come to the University of Bristol to experience all aspects of engineering first-hand.

University of Bristol - International Affairs Society FREE EVENTS We are the university’s leading forum for debate and discussion of key international, political and economic issues. We host speaker-driven events focused on a broad range of pressing issues in current affairs, whether it be Brexit, inter-generational inequality, or race relations. Nuffield Research Placements Programme Applications Now Open !!

Online student applications for the Nuffield Research Placements programme 2019-20 are now open, and will close on Friday 31st January 2020.

Nuffield Research Placements have been running UK wide for over 20 years. They are for year 12 STEM students who meet the GCSE and bursary or first in family criteria, offering them the opportunity of a 4 week long research based work placement in the summer holidays of 2020.

Suitable students will be studying at least one STEM course, including Maths, Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology, Geography, Geology and Economics.

Successful students work alongside a professional researcher in a university, industry or government agency and are supported to carry out their own research project, write a scientific report and design a research poster, which they present at a mini conference in the autumn. All students are supported by the Nuffield Foundation with daily travel costs to and from placement. In addition eligible students will receive bursary payments of ÂŁ100 per week while on placement. Most placements are desk based, with a few being lab or field based. Please note that we do not offer clinically based placements.

You will gain skills useful for university applications, such as research, academic writing and data handling, as well as the softer work based skills such as independence, teamwork and organisation. These can all help you to achieve better results and look great on university or job applications.

Spend a week extracting, purifying and amplifying the DNA of nematodes to help us find out which species are present in our ecosystems and what this means for agriculture and life on earth. Aerospace Bristol (Unpaid) ‘Visitor Services Volunteer’ Are you a student who is required to undertake volunteering as part of your studies? Are you looking to work as part of a team providing excellent customer service? Are you passionate about museums, aviation or the tourism industry? If so we can offer you the opportunity to volunteer with us for one day a week for a minimum of 12 weeks. We have flexible shift options so you are able to fit your volunteering around your studies, and of course if you want to stay for longer than 12 weeks that’s fine too Aerospace Bristol museum opened in 2017 and is home to the last Concorde ever built and the last to fly when it returned to its birthplace in 2003. Our vision is an aerospace museum, which inspires, entertains and informs through the understanding of, and engagement with, the stories and collections of Bristol’s aerospace industry – past, present and future. If you have a passion for planes, are enthusiastic about education, are mad for museums or are hoping to gain experience for employment then we want to hear from you.

Requirements: We are looking for people who: 

YINI is for post A-Level/Higher/Advanced Higher or equivalent school leavers and Undergraduate students who are looking for work placements within technology, science, engineering, business and finance.

Students can apply to the programme, post A levels/ Highers/ Advanced Highers or equivalents for a year’s work experience prior to going to university or as a year to help decide on the future direction of their career - be that Higher Apprenticeship, University or work, or during their degree course itself.

How it works  Student submits application to YINI via web site. 

Student interviewed by EDT prior to full acceptance on the scheme.



Companies approach us outlining the kinds of roles they have / students they are looking for.



EDT Placements team will search the registered students’ database to find suitable matches for companies and forward relevant CV’s to the company. In some cases we will contact universities / schools for specific candidates.



The Company will identify which students they would like to interview and when.



The EDT will deal with the administration arrangements informing the student.



The company will interview the student and decide whether they want to offer a placement to the student. If they do the EDT will relay the offer to the Student.



Sociology/Health and Social Bristol Design (City Hall) - Bristol Design are an in-house graphic and digital design agency for Bristol Council, working with other councils and partners. Work includes branding, designing posters, leaflets and websites as well as video and still photography.

Graphics/Fine Art/Media /IT/Photography International Affairs – Part of the Policy, Strategy and Partnership Directorate and works closely with the Mayor and the Mayor’s Office on all aspects of global affairs for the council.

Calling all Year 13 Students!!

Dr Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute – for Year 13 The Dr Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) is a unique opportunity for Year 13 (ages 17-18) students to spend a month working as part of a research team alongside leading scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

As well as getting the chance to conduct real scientific experiments, students produce reports and present their findings to their peers before spending a week in a field school where you experience the diverse ecosystems, wildlife, and archaeology of the region.

Applications close on Friday 1 February 2019.
