BBC Digital Cities will be returning to Bristol in 2020 with a week-long series of events for the creative industries.

Starting on Saturday 25 January, there will be a full and varied schedule across the week, offering insights and free digital skills training.

Amongst the partners delivering events are BBC Academy with our Digital Skills Day, which includes the chance to find out about podcasting, TikTok, Instagram and filming on your smartphone, BBC Young Reporter, BBC Stem and digital arts and creative conference, Hello Culture Remix, will be making its debut in the city.

Boomsatsuma will once again be opening up their doors for an Ask Me Anything event and Bristol Media's How to Get Your Dream Job event will be taking place at the BBC Bristol. See next page for more information on this.

There will also be a day of events on Thursday 30 January at Watershed. Called Screen Futures, it will feature Bristol UNESCO City of Film, Into Film, ScreenSkills, Cables & Cameras, TEDxBristol, BBC Writersroom, BFI NETWORK, Calling the Shots and BBC Upload and many more fantastic organisations, and will give you the chance to find out what schemes and opportunities they can offer.

Also, recent arrivals to the city - Channel 4 - will be talking about their latest apprenticeships and trainee schemes.

Not to be missed out, tech and digital creators will be able to attend UWE’s Global Game Jam and Bristol City Council’s Hackathon over the two weekends, both returning after successful events last year.

'Ask Me Anything' is a networking event offering 14-18 year olds unique career insights from the creative industries, It is hosted by boomsatsuma and Bristol WORKS as part of Bristol's BBC Digital Cities Week 2020.

Set up as a speed networking event, young people will meet a range of creatives in professional roles, each offering unique insights into their fields as well as the opportunity to ask them any burning questions.

With representatives from games, music, film, TV production and more, the event will give budding young creatives the chance to learn the skills they need to access similar careers, whilst also building a network of contacts.

CreatorsXX - Summer School 2020 Will you take part in the next generation of creative innovation? Engineering is far more than building and fixing things – and we want to prove it. From sustainable development and renewable energy to the smart technologies that are revolutionising our lives in areas like healthcare, transport, education and communication, there's a growing need for females who are creative, ambitious and enjoy solving problems in the modern world.

This three-day programme from 3 – 5 August invites young females in years 10, 11 and 12 to come to the University of Bristol to experience all aspects of engineering first-hand.

You’ll get to attend taster lectures, visit the world leading research labs and take part in hands on practical workshops.

As well as developing your subject knowledge, you will find out about other aspects of university life at Bristol for example societies, student support and welfare initiatives as well as discovering the global opportunities available. You will explore the university campus and meet current undergraduate students who will discuss their university experience, helping you to make the right choices for you.

University of Bristol - Biology Work Experience Research Placement Week 2020 Monday 18th - Friday 22nd May 2020 Monday 6th - Friday 10th July 2020 Are you interested in a potential career in Biology? If so, the University of Bristol have the chance for you to be involved in some REAL scientific research and gain valuable experience.

Spend a week extracting, purifying and amplifying the DNA of nematodes to help us find out which species are present in our ecosystems and what this means for agriculture and life on earth. Expect to work with real scientists and researchers, using the University’s state of the art equipment to learn more about the natural world. You will also get to meet and work with other pupils interested in the same ideas.

Training and teaching are provided but there is an authentic independent ethos and students will complete all of the work themselves and have to travel to the university each day.

The National Access Summer School is an immersive four day residential that gives students an insight into the full university experience, including taster lectures from a range of academic subjects, living in accommodation and new social experiences.

This programme is only available to students who live outside the Greater West Midlands region and are currently in Year 12. The next programme begins with a week long residential at the University from Sunday 23 – Wednesday 26 August 2020.

The costs of the National Access Summer School are completely covered by the University. This includes travel to and from the University (up to ÂŁ35), accommodation, all meals during the residential element and all social activities.

Applications for 2020 entry are open and this exciting course has been developed in consultation with three NHS trusts to meet the increasing demand for NHS services and the need for a different type of Health and Wellbeing professional to work within the NHS. On our taster day, as well as meeting specialist active health and wellbeing practitioners, attendees will get hands-on experience by taking part in our Practical Health Checks in our labs, as well as by creating solutions for health and wellbeing problems.

Level 3 Apprentice Technician - to join us on our award-winning programme in Bristol, starting in Summer/Autumn 2020.

The Sutton Trust US Programme is a once in a lifetime opportunity to explore what studying in the US is like. It will give you a taste of what it's like being an international student in the US and help you see if it could be the right fit for you.

It's a fully-funded programme so we'll cover all costs, including travel, residential events, accommodation and food.

University of Oxford Access Scheme ‘UNIQ’ Applications open 2nd December and close 27th January UNIQ is open to students studying in their first year of further education, who are based at UK state schools/colleges. Students make a single application between December and January and can be selected to participate in one of two activities: UNIQ Digital or UNIQ Spring and Summer.

UNIQ Spring and Summer gives you a taste of the Oxford undergraduate student experience. You will live in an Oxford college for a week, attend lectures and seminars in your chosen subject area, and receive expert advice on the Oxford application and interview process. The timetable also allows plenty of time for social activities; in the evenings you are free to tour the city, sample some of the University's sports and cultural facilities, and let your hair down at the farewell party.

UNIQ Digital provides comprehensive information and guidance on the university admissions process, and aims to give you a realistic view of Oxford student life through videos, activities and quizzes. The platform offers a range of forums where you can discuss both academic and social topics. These forums are monitored by student ambassadors, who are always on hand to answer questions and offer support.

Nuffield Research Placements Programme Applications Now Open !!

Online student applications for the Nuffield Research Placements programme 2019-20 are now open, and will close on Friday 31st January 2020.

Nuffield Research Placements have been running UK wide for over 20 years. They are for year 12 STEM students who meet the GCSE and bursary or first in family criteria, offering them the opportunity of a 4 week long research based work placement in the summer holidays of 2020.

Suitable students will be studying at least one STEM course, including Maths, Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Psychology, Geography, Geology and Economics.

Successful students work alongside a professional researcher in a university, industry or government agency and are supported to carry out their own research project, write a scientific report and design a research poster, which they present at a mini conference in the autumn. All students are supported by the Nuffield Foundation with daily travel costs to and from placement. In addition eligible students will receive bursary payments of ÂŁ100 per week while on placement. Most placements are desk based, with a few being lab or field based. Please note that we do not offer clinically based placements.

You will gain skills useful for university applications, such as research, academic writing and data handling, as well as the softer work based skills such as independence, teamwork and organisation. These can all help you to achieve better results and look great on university or job applications.

The scheme is a pre-entry initiative alongside the UCAS application process in which student complete an assignment before receiving an alternative offer from our Admissions team.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for the In2Surrey scheme, students must meet two or more of the criteria which can be found here.

Engineering Work Experience - MBDA—Bristol 2019 Work experience can be the first opportunity for you to try a career that you may not have considered previously, as well as give you a better view of opportunities available on our Early Careers Schemes.

You may be given tasks to complete which will require you to collate information whilst spending time in many different departments.

Please note Work Experience is available for a nominal period of 1 week between March and August. Applications are open to school year 11, 12 and 13 only. Initial applications should be submitted by the student and completed via the application form below.

Assuming the written application is deemed suitable a member of the work experience team will contact you by telephone for a brief conversation to discuss your interest, and to ensure MBDA offers a suitable placement for your requirements.

All Work Experience Placements at MBDA must be eligible to gain future UK Security Clearance. To obtain this clearance you would be required to hold a UK passport and to have resided in the UK for the previous 5 years - WE WOULD DISCOURAGE YOU APPLYING IF YOU DO NOT MEET THIS CRITERIA. The UK Work Experience Programme is for students looking for a work experience placement with a leading global bank. The programme provides opportunities to gain some hands-on experience, develop your knowledge of banking and financial services, and explore the careers available at HSBC in the UK. Students should note that this is an unpaid work experience programme.

WORK EXPERIENCE OPPORTUNITIES WITH HMRC HMRC is one of the biggest Civil Service departments, employing over 70,000 people in 24 different professions. Bristol regional centre, located alongside Bristol Temple Meads train station employs approximately 1100 people, in a variety of professions.

These include tax investigators, project managers, guidance analysts, digital web developers and many more. We are offering 5 days’ work experience to students in Bristol and the surrounding areas who are currently studying in years 10 to 13.

Students in Year 11 and 12 – W/C 29 July 2020 Students who wish to apply will need to complete this application form no later than 31 January 2020. We do however encourage students to apply early as the application window may close before the deadline if we receive large numbers.

Calling all Year 13 Students!!

Dr Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute – for Year 13 The Dr Bessie Lawrence International Summer Science Institute (ISSI) is a unique opportunity for Year 13 (ages 17-18) students to spend a month working as part of a research team alongside leading scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

As well as getting the chance to conduct real scientific experiments, students produce reports and present their findings to their peers before spending a week in a field school where you experience the diverse ecosystems, wildlife, and archaeology of the region.
