As we celebrate Women's History Month STAY MAGAZINE highlights forces of nature who have changed the landscape of fashion, art, music & lifestyle! One such phenom is Shanell Red.

5X Grammy Nominated Singer/Songwriter Shanell "RED" was inspired to become a rapper, singer, and songwriter at the age of 14 after hearing "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugarhill Gang and "Do You Wanna Rock" by The Sequence.

Shanell answered to several business opportunities, establishing both professional and personal relationships with different celebrity artists and producers, before forming her own female group: "Thik". The group got a label deal with Pocket Town/EMI, and started helping Billie Lawrence and Crucial Conflict. Due to unfortunate circumstances, the label folded and "Thik" went their separate ways, with the exception of Shanell and Tenesha.

Big Drawz Music was established in 2002 and the powerful writing duo immediately began writing with well-established producers in the industry thanks to their manager Kymberlee Thornton. The ladies later linked up with manager Randy (Esso) who assisted in securing their first publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music Group.

Shanell joined forces with Jonathan "JJ" Jennings to form PHATT HOUSE ENTERTAINMENT and started building their own artists instead of building up other people's artists.

Shanell 'RED' Irving's journey through the music industry is a testament passion and determination. She has left an indelible mark. Melky Jean is more than a beautiful face and a Grammy nominated powerhouse Singer/Songwriter! She is also a Philanthropist who has used her platform to bring awareness to the issues facing Haiti as well as develop resources to assist them in their efforts to uplift its underserved communities.

As a performer, she has opened up for groups like the Roots, Black Eye Peas, Outkast and has gracefully shared the stage with living legends Sheryl Mclaughlin and Patti Labelle. Melky's accolades are beautiful as she has written for artists like Sinead O’Connor, Regina Belle, and many others Growing up, her musical influences ranged from Gospel (Tremaine Hawkins and Mahalia Jackson), Sam Cook, Janis Joplin, Patti Labelle, and Betty Wright.

Melky Jean was born in Brooklyn, NY, and raised in New Jersey, making her a first-generation Haitian-American. Melky attended the Performing Arts High School in New Jersey, where she learned opera and used her dad’s church as her sanctuary to write music and perform in her family’s band.

In 2011 the year following the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Melky’s song “Better” was included in The CARE For Haiti charity a was a tribute to the quake victims and included appearance her brother Wyclef Jean, Brook Hogan, Natasha Bedingfield to name a few

What has this process been like - How does it feel to be in the moment right now?

It feels like a dream. I do feel like a “superstar” if that makes sense. At times, I don’t feel normal anymore, but I am embracing the moment that God has given to me! It still hasn’t registered that I got picked up for a reality show, and now people can watch my show on demand. So obviously I feel shocked, but grateful.

Any highlights you want to share with us so far?

Well… I have done over 20 interviews with the press. The feedback has been great! I went to New York and had a wonderful experience after our press release. The way my city has supported me has definitely been one of my biggest highlights.

How has your husband been a supporter throughout the process of making this show?

My man , my man, my man!!! Jason has been simply amazing, but protective. When I have moments of overthinking he always encourages me. He never wanted to be on tv...but lord, he is definitely doing what he's supposed to do to be a superstar himself! I can not wait for the world to see what he has to offer!

4.. How are your business ventures at this time - we know it's tax season and you must be busy!

Yessss, it is very very busy, but I am thankful that my clients support me. I go hard for my clients and I spoil them!

hat do we have to look forward to the most in this upcoming season?

My show! Charnita’s World is a docu-series that is based upon my transparent way of my life My show is definitely solution-driven. Kick back and just enjoy the ride - there are many laughs and heartfelt moment in this series, about my businesses, personal life, family, and of course my man!

The Strands Fiber Arts Fashion Mosaic Motif showcase took place in Atlanta Georgia at the Southwest Arts Center on March 24, 2024. The Weekend started with the showcase of the beautiful designs of each Designer in the South West Arts Center art gallery followed by fittings , rehearsals and connecting with each other again to showcase our collection and elevate our brands . Fashion show Producer and Designer Stacie Jackson is phenomenal powerhouse with a vision and determination to elevate the designers of color within the Fiber Arts Fashion Community. When I asked Producer/ Designer Stacie Jackson how she felt afterwards she said "Phenomenal and calm. If that makes any sense. I'm extremely happy that the designers and models were pleased and the audience was captivated by what they saw. I was excited to see new designers that have been added to the tribe and that most feel like Strands is family.. I am grateful and thankful for the divine vision" .
