Petals of Rosa Digitale

Founders: Steafania Altieri (Italy) & Stavroula Lada (Greece) School year 2017-18

Book creation: Stavroula Lada, Greece

Project details D E S CR I P T I O N Short description This project is about the sterotypes of the gendre. It concerns girls and women who want to deal with technology and digital age. The project is inspired by the italian national movement http://rosadigitale.it/it/ . This movement opened this year to other european countries, this is why the founder, Stefania Altieri, asked me to be co-founder and be part of it. The goal of it is double: to fight against gendre stereotypes & send a message about the women’s rights. The 8th of March, we celebrated women’s rights & their involvement with the digital world (programmation, coding, robotics & other web applications. Our activities were also in March, the STEM month, & ended in the end of the school year.

PEDAGOGICAL INNOVATI ON AND CREATIVITY Description of methodology

The project was based on collaborative activities (Cooperative learning.) The work was organized according to the age of students. There were many partners, but the activities were formed in a way that fit all age range. The students in small groups had unplugged activities in the beginning (computational thinking). During the coding process (using Scratch and remixing the partners’ codes) the students had to use their creativity. They had to invent new designs & code for the Pixel Art. They had to make a research on important women (inquiry-based learning) in small groups & designed their own games, that shared with their peers. They also created a robot (hands-on activities). The activities intrigued their curiosity & their will of exploring new technology territories. During the skype meeting, the partners shared their coding in Scratch& drawing in Pixel Art. It was important for the students to make good use of technology and take advantage of its positive components (digital skills).

I N T E G R A TI O N I N C UR R I C UL UM Which key competences? As a primary school teach, I teach among other subjects (greek language, history, social studies), ICT, math and science (STEM). Acquiring digital skills is a key-competence nowadays. Coding & making use of the webtools of the interent is very challenging. On the other hand, gendre stereotypes sometimes block girls from making an extent use of technology. Taking into account these parameters above, this project was well integrated to the class curriculum. The students learned how to use variables, practiced math & geometry, used tables, practiced logic and learned how to code (computational thinking). Moreover, they learned to solve problems (problem-solving), but also, interpretate information and deal with data. Apart from that, they had to communicate with their partners (language skills) & collaborate with them (collaboration & social skills).

C O M U N I CA T I O N A N D E XC H A N GE How to Exchange with partners? The teachers communicated via Twinmails & the Teachers Bulletin. Moreover, me & Stefania Altieri, as founders of the project, often communicated via Facebook messenger. There was a plan in the beginning and a clear schedule, so all teacher could be aware of the goals, the tasks & the activities of the whole project. As for the students, they mainly communicated in the Twinspace via padlets, the Linoit web tool & the Project Journal, where they exchanged the tasks they had. In addition, they communicated with Scratch, when they remixed their codes. Apart from this kind of communication & exchange we had online meetings to discuss about our activities, to code & to play games.

C O L L A B OR A T I O N BE TW E E N SC H O O L S Project procedure In the beginning the students introduced their school in a padlet. Then they all braistormed in an answergarden activity. They created Scratch codings, which they gave to their partners to change & remix. They shared all codes in a padlet : https://padlet.com/danielapraino/yumdotz6cgt where they commented on their peers’ work. They drew the logo of RosaDigitale in pixel art & played the game Match the RosaDigitale codes: https://it.padlet.com/angelaaruanno/fq3hzonvt6gh The partners also designed & played games: https://padlet.com/melcunda/play_the_games During the STEM week they had collaborative STEM activities in a linoit http://linoit.com/users/Stacy_L/canvases/STEM%20activities-Coding%20%40%20school (while during the eTwinning Day they celebrated all together. They recollected their suggestions for the project https://padlet.com/salvatrice_b/rosadigitale & had an online meeting https://vimeo.com/277618328 All partners created an eBook with their project activities and wrote about the results of their participation. Finally, the partners disseminated their project & shared these activities in the padlet https://padlet.com/francescamuci81/hkec0uwj2nk1

TECNOLOGY USAGE We used various technological tools to share our documents (twinspace, google drive, dropbox) & our work in padlets & Linoits. We used Excel for our Pixel Art & the hidden ccodes. Coding was done in Scratch, where the students created their algorithms & then gave them to their peers to remix. We used web tools for image editing & collages, like FotoJet, Pizap, BeFunky, Photocollage & bloggif. For our online meetings we used the eTwinning platform, but also Skype & hangouts. For our videos we used Movie Maker, Magisto, Animoto, Youtube, Video Show & Quik-Pro. For the storytelling & the narrations, Adobe Spark & piktochart. For the questionnaires we used modules of Google. The TwinSpace is proved to be a platform irreplaceable for the collaboration of partners: it is there where we exchanged ideas& shared all our work. Twinspace Pages where we can upload embed codes made the collaboration and the communication of the project much easierWithout technology, the project wouldn’t have been realized.

RESULTS The week of RosaDigitale is connected to the month of STEM (March), an initiative of the collaboration of the Department of Equale Opportunities & the Ministry of Education in Italy, which stimulates the public debate about the need to fill the gap between women & scientific environment. With the movement “RosaDigitale we urge girls to activities of studying & involvement in the scientific & technological areas. The results of the project in short terms are to develop the problem-solving & the social skills during the collaboration with their partners. The sensibilization on the culture of equal opportunities is also an intension towards the other, as an appreciation of the value of different cultures in a multitechnological society, as a defence towards discrimination, intolerance & violence of any kind, gender, racial, of religion. In long term, the positive effects to the children who participated in this project are also related to the development of computational thinking & the capacity of coding & programming. The impact of coding is immediate The result the more evident is the involvement of the children, of the teachers & the parents. My students are only 7 years old, but the message of this project passed on them & the proof of that was while they presented the results to their parents. The parents also shared their experience & talked about how their children changed their point of view on gender opportunities.

CERTIFICATION The project has received a certificate of the movement RosaDigitale in Italy (https://rosadigitaleweek.com/eventi/). This eTwinning project has also participated : 
