Dear Prep Community, The energy and enthusiasm on campus during the fall semester is still palpable as we enter a new calendar year, and the winter sports season at St. Augustine Prep. This vibrant community continues to embrace the passion and commitment that characterizes Hermit Brothers in the academic space, in the athletic arena, and in their service to others. “I Carry the Fire,” the theme for this school year, continues to be exceptionally appropriate and realized in the Prep’s robust co-curricular offerings. Leadership skills such as integrity, empathy, temperance, and accountability are actively lived by the school’s scholar athletes and their coaches. The excellence experienced on the playing fields translates to life-long values and expectations for these young men. As you enjoy the Prep’s beautiful campus, you can see the results of those who further the mission of the school in a meaningful way. The Vincent L. Buondonno Building and the newly developed Campus Commons have changed the learning environment for our school community. On behalf of my fellow Augustinian Friars, please accept my gratitude and well wishes to the scholar athletes, their families, and their coaches as they represent the school and Carry the Fire. Additionally, the valued partners you see in this handsome media guide provide the resources vneeded to make Hermits Athletics a reality; they are a blessing to us. Hermit Pride is alive and well! In Augustine,

Fr. Donald F. Reilly, O.S.A., D.Min. President

Dear Hermit Nation, On behalf of the St. Augustine Prep Athletic Department, welcome to a new winter sports season. Athletics is an excellent way for young men to grow both physically and emotionally, something I quickly learned during my time as a student at the Prep. Through athletics, I acquired valuable skills in time management, problem solving, motivation, and team building— skills that left me well-prepared for life beyond high school. We know that through athletic experiences, students also gain these valuable life skills. From tryouts, to practices, to games, the Athletic Department strives each day to support our students, coaches, and families, and to further the mission of the Prep through participation in sports. Along with the entire St. Augustine Prep community, we take great pride in the accomplishments of our scholar-athletes. Representing St. Augustine Prep on the playing field requires determination, dedication, and discipline. These demands require the successful management of academic obligations and athletic responsibilities. As a result, the students who participate in athletics are truly accomplished young men. The Athletics Media Guide is the outlet through which we celebrate these scholar-athletes, and we are grateful to the many generous benefactors who have assisted us in creating these opportunities for our students. We wish the best of luck to our scholar-athletes, their coaches, their families, and their fans this winter season. May we all continue to celebrate success and Hermit Pride during the rest of the year. Go Hermits!

Michael Rizzo ’86 Director of Athletics St. Augustine Prep

@hermitathletics

Dear Hermit Fans, The winter sports season is always an exciting one at St. Augustine Prep! The nine varsity-level programs that represent our school so well every winter showcase the broad spectrum of our scholar-athletes’ talents – from our defending state champion basketball program to wrestling and ice hockey, to sports as diverse as swimming, track, fencing, bowling, squash, and chess, our Hermit brothers consistently demonstrate their pride in representing the Prep. Their fierce commitment to sportsmanship and to the pursuit of excellence helps to define our mission perfectly. One of the characteristics that continues to make St. Augustine Prep so unique is the community engagement, support, and celebration across all of our scholar-athletes and programs. We compete together, more often than not we win together, and most importantly we lift each other up, in the spirit of brotherhood that so perfectly characterizes the entirety of the Prep community. The Hermit bond and the Augustinian mission are strong, and while they ground us in common values and goals, they also propel us forward, equipped to pursue and achieve those goals. As we look ahead to the winter 2016-2017 athletic campaign, we remember our previous accomplishments by using them as a springboard to the pursuit of excellence both on and off the field. With this as a backdrop, we recognize the dedication, pride, and commitment of all those who play such a vital role in making Hermits Athletics one of the premier overall programs in southern New Jersey, the state, and the region. We also want to take an opportunity to extend our most sincere gratitude to all of our Hermit alumni brothers, as well as the past and present families, friends, and benefactors of St. Augustine Prep. Our young men on campus today, and every one of our scholar-athletes, stand on the shoulders of those who came before them – we are extremely grateful for your loyalty and support. We hope you enjoy the winter sports season, and this publication. We encourage you to continue to strengthen the Hermit network and bond by supporting our generous and valued partnership sponsors. Go HERMITS!

HERMITSBASKETBALL -- HEAD COACH

Coach Paul A. Rodio (Class of 1970) is entering his 40th

year leading the St. Augustine Prep basketball program, and the school enters competition this season as the defending New Jersey Non-Public A State Champions. Coach Rodio has been the Hermits basketball coach since 1978, and in that time has amassed 860 victories making him the all-time winningest coach in South Jersey and second winningest all-time coach in the state. With an overall win-loss record of 861-225, Coach Rodio is one of only three coaches in the history of New Jersey to eclipse the 800-win total. Coach is also a proud member of the NJSIAA Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame, the New Jersey Coaches Hall of Fame and the Basketball Coaches of South Jersey Hall of Fame. Under his leadership, the Hermits have won 12 South Jersey Championships and five State Championships (1981-82, 1998-99, 2003-04, 2010-11, and 2015-16 seasons). Coach Rodio has served the school in many roles over the past four decades, including time as the Director of Athletics, Development Director, and many other functions; he is currently a faculty member at the Prep, teaching accounting and world history. As the school’s cross country coach early in his career, he captured four state championships from 1976-1979. Coach Rodio has coached hundreds of Hermit Brothers during his time in Richland. Many of his former players have gone on to success at the collegiate level and beyond: Anthony Farmer ‘05 (Rutgers); Pops Mensah-Bonsu ‘01 (George Washington/Dallas Mavericks/Toronto Raptors/Houston Rockets/2012 Great Britain Olympic Team); David Orlandini ‘84 (Princeton); Olu Babalola ‘01 (Clemson/Manchester Giants - BBL); Mike Kouser ’97 (Drexel); Jimmy Clinton ’98 (Siena); Lou Ruskey ’99 (Villanova); Durell Vinson ’04 (Wagner/FC Mulhouse – France); Michael Haddix ’02 (Siena); Benedict Nwachukwu, M.D., M.B.A. ’04 (Columbia University); Scott Greenman ’02 (Princeton); and Hermits all-time leading scorer Isaiah Morton ’11 (Marist/Cal State Bernardino). Most recently, the lone graduating senior from the state championship 2015-2016 squad, Sa’eed Nelson ‘16, has already begun to garner recognition and accolades as a freshman impact player for American University. The success of his former players is a testament to the impact that Coach Rodio has had both on and off the court. Coach Rodio’s success is unrivaled in South Jersey. He has turned the 20-win season into an expectation for the Hermits as they have averaged upwards of 22 wins per year in his 39 seasons at the helm. This on-court success comes while facing a tough Cape Atlantic League schedule and an aggressive non-conference schedule. Under Rodio’s leadership, the Hermits have faced all levels of competition, from the hallmark north Jersey and perennial national powers in St. Anthony’s and St. Patrick’s (now known as the Patrick School), to teams such as Montrose Christian and Germantown Academy who are also traditionally recognized as the nation’s best. Coach Rodio’s impact on the school is almost impossible to measure; the program’s success and the school’s growth are unmistakably linked. In 1980 he patrolled the sidelines for the first game held at Spina Gym which is also affectionately known as “The Cave.” His decades of championship success resulted in the new home of the Hermits basketball program being officially named “The Paul A. Rodio Gymnasium.” A countless number of people, from students and families to fans and college recruiters, have set foot on St. Augustine Prep’s campus because of Coach Rodio and the excellence of the basketball program. For his four decades of unwavering service and commitment to St. Augustine Prep, for his positive efforts in the larger community, and for his continuing legacy as a lifelong educator and the area’s preeminent basketball coach, Coach Rodio was recognized and honored in November 2016 as the school’s 44th recipient of the Gregor Mendel Medal, St. Augustine Prep’s most prestigious award.

HERMITSICE HOCKEY -- HEAD COACH Coach Tim Fingerhut enters his 11th Season as the head coach of Hermits ice hockey. During his tenure, St. Augustine Prep has reached three state championship title games, winning one in 2007. The Hermits also captured the Gordon Cup in 2011 as co-champions with Delbarton School. In 2007, his first season at the helm, in the Hermits secured their second consecutive Handchen Cup. The work of Coach Fingerhut’s Hermits was not complete, as they went on to defeat St. Peter’s Prep by a score of 3-1 to capture the school’s first state championship in ice hockey. The victory in the state final made the 2007 Hermits the only team in the history of New Jersey to finish a season undefeated and untied (23-0-0). The historic season led to an invitation to join the Gordon Conference, which is the most prestigious hockey conference in the state and one of the most revered high school hockey conferences in the country. Before his arrival at St. Augustine Prep, Coach Fingerhut played collegiately at the University of Vermont, a career which led to his selection in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. From 1992-2004, Coach Fingerhut’s career in the professional ranks led him through the CoHL, the ECHL, and the AHL. Following the conclusion of his professional playing career, Mr. Fingerhut became heavily involved in teaching youth hockey and has coached numerous club teams throughout the region. Coach Fingerhut is a proud faculty member at St. Augustine Prep, teaching Health and Lifetime Fitness.

HERMITSWRESTLING -- HEAD COACH Coach Bill Ward, Sr. (Class of 1985) is entering his fifth year as the head coach of Hermits wrestling. He is a 1985 graduate of St. Augustine Prep and a three-time high school district champion; during his senior year he finished as the runner-up in the region tournament. Coach Ward finished his career at St. Augustine with a 106-9 record and went on to wrestle at Drexel University, where captured titles at the Bloomsburg Invitational, the Trenton State Open, and the Franklin and Marshall Open. He was also a two-time East Coast Conference Finalist. Following the conclusion of his illustrious collegiate career, Coach Ward became active in youth wrestling across the area and has been involved in coaching for 24 years. Ward is a member of the 2015 class of the South Jersey Wrestling Hall of Fame. Before coming to the Prep, Coach Ward had a successful stint as the head coach of Buena High School where his teams won four South Jersey Sectional Championships and finished as runner-up in an additional four seasons. Since joining St. Augustine, Coach Ward’s squads have won two South Jersey Non-Public-A Sectional Championships leading to two State Final berths. In 2014 Coach Ward helped Prep senior Jack Clark secure an Individual State Championship in his weight class. Ward has a four-year Prep coaching record of_____, while leading his teams through a grueling national schedule. He has never shielded his squads from a challenge – Hermits wrestling participates in some of the most prestigious and competitive events in the nation, including the Virginia Duals, the Beast of the East, and the Garden State Duals. These events are complimentary to a schedule that also boasts matches against Paulsboro, Don Bosco Prep, Delbarton, and many others traditional New Jersey wrestling powers. Coach Ward’s no-nonsense style of coaching and aggressive scheduling has helped develop many of St. Augustine’s wrestlers into the athletes and men that they are today.
