REV. DONALD F. REILLY, O.S.A., D.MIN. President, St. Augustine Preparatory School Dear Members of the Prep Community, Academic Year 2016-17 began with a concurrence of four events which electrified the campus: - The Class of 2020 experienced an overnight orientation beginning with a prayer service to invoke God’s blessing on our newest Hermit Brothers. The one hundred fifty young men (bringing our total enrollment to 682) then met their UNITAS Advisors, members of the faculty and administration, who will serve as mentors and guides throughout their freshman year. Together, students and advisors moved through the program participating in team-building activities and interacting with speakers on topics ranging from study skills and time management to available personal and academic resources on campus to the purpose and meaning of a Catholic Augustinian Education. By all accounts, the experience was a huge success. - The construction of the Vincent L. Buondonno Building, named after the beloved brother of Rose Davis, friend and benefactor of the Prep, achieved a goal of the Campus Master Plan by creating the Campus Commons. The road running through campus is now a paver-lined walkway stretching from the front of the Forum to the opposite end of the campus where this wonderful addition to the campus houses classrooms, offices, and the Mr. Anthony J. Spina (one of the original faculty members and 2015 recipient of the prestigious Mendel Medal) Prep Heritage Center. - The results of a comprehensive and far reaching survey conducted over the summer months were compiled from and presented to the Board of Directors, the Steering Committee, the Leadership Team of the Prep, the Faculty and Staff, and those who are part of every other

constituency of the Prep, nine hundred in all. The purpose of the survey was to glean fact-based information on value, performance, affordability, likely to recommend, reputation, strengths, and challenges. Creating a culture of planning to assure the Prep can continue to offer young men an excellent education while providing an experience of Character Development, Faith Formation, and Leadership Skills for a 21st Century man of integrity, prayer, and commitment is paramount. - Our theme this academic year is “I Carry the Fire,” an Augustinian reference to the pursuit of God. St. Augustine believed that spiritual growth entails knowing God intimately and knowing ourselves realistically. That honest self-knowledge draws us into deeper knowledge of the One who loves us and redeems us. The young men on campus accept the challenge of self-knowledge by learning about our world, themselves, and consequently, a loving God. Please know that you and your families are remembered at our weekly all-school Masses. Thank you for being part of the Prep Community.

Dear Prep Community, This fall has been filled with highlights and examples of the Prep’s pursuit of excellence, outstanding student achievement, and commitment to growth. Additionally, the bestowment of the Mendel Medal to Paul Rodio ‘70 for his lifetime dedication as educator, mentor, coach, and friend symbolizes what can be done when vision and passion meet. The Prep is excellent because of you and the people who have lived the personalized, values-based education that happens every day at St. Augustine Prep. Wherever life takes them, Alumni are connected to each other and St. Augustine Prep through the Hermits Leadership Network, a group of like-minded graduates who are able to provide professional, career, and social opportunities to one another, while sustaining lifelong relationships in the spirit of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas. Thank you to those who have participated in: • • • • •

Investing in St. Augustine Prep at this critical point in its history will guarantee future generations of Hermits will know what it means to learn, achieve, and grow at a school ever mindful of its commitment to building on the traditions it cherishes most.

“ASIDE FROM MY PARENTS, COACH RODIO IS ONE OF THE FEW OTHERS

WHO MADE ME THE PERSON I AM TODAY. WHEN I WAS A STUDENT HERE, EVERYONE WANTED TO BE COACH RODIO. HE WAS IT. COACH IS STILL IT. -- MICHAEL RIZZO, CLASS OF 1986

In 1977, when Larry Aldrich, then the Head Basketball Coach for St. Augustine, had to step down due to declining health, Paul Rodio was school President Fr. LaRosa’s first choice to take his place. Admittedly though, he was not everyone’s. “I was twenty-four years old and naming me Head Coach was an unpopular decision, but Fr. LaRosa believed in me. He knew I had the energy; I had the juice. I was here 24/7. Fr. LaRosa and I talked often, and he knew I had the kids at heart. He knew I would go after it.” And go after “It,” he did. While Rodio feels strongly that luck had a big part in determining his path at St. Augustine, those who know him well, know better. From students to colleagues and from players to friends, he is the embodiment of character in action-equal parts fairness, devotion, respect, responsibility, hard work and warmth. As he begins his forty-first year of teaching, and his thirty-ninth year as Head Basketball Coach, Rodio is reflective of his legendary career, both on the court and in the classroom, as well as the connection between the two. “It may be cliché but to be a good basketball coach you need to be a good teacher. It’s the same principles: pay attention, listen, communicate.” Rodio’s colleague and close friend, Anthony Iaconelli, reflects, “I remember a conversation he and I had on the practice floor about thirty years ago. He told me, ‘I really believe South Jersey is ready to be taken.’ I thought he was talking about basketball, but the sentiment was much larger than that. He has given every ounce of himself to the Prep, whether it be in the outreach to prospective students,

6

in development, in teaching or as the Athletic Director.” From his earliest days at St. Augustine, as the Freshman Basketball Coach, the Cross Country Coach, and a novice teacher, Coach Rodio has given the school his all and never stopped going after it. Family is first, but the Prep is a close second. “I was hired at a time when St. Augustine wasn’t good at anything. The basketball team had a 2-20 record the year before I started. There were about 140 kids in the school when I started, and I hit it off with them.” According to Rodio, that’s when his luck kicked in. “I got a break my first year and we ended the season at 14-10. My next year, we had twenty wins. By year four, we were in the South Jersey Championship, and in my fifth year, we won it.” He won it, and continues to win it today, clearly embodying the idea that he who wills the end, wills the means. His team also went on to win state championships in 1999, 2004, 2011, and 2016. While Rodio may

”

chalk up some of his success to luck, his colleagues and students know it is much more than that. Athletic Director Michael Rizzo, explains, “Coach’s message is consistent. Anyone who’s been around him for a number of years will say the same thing. He always says, ‘Surround yourself with the right people.’ Aside from my parents, Coach Rodio is one of the few others who made me the person I am today. When I was a student here, everyone wanted to be Coach Rodio. He was it. Coach is still it.” As with so many Hermits, Mr. Rodio’s connection to St. Augustine began in the spring of his eighth grade year in the form of a visit to the school. Noting that St. Augustine was not a popular choice for high school in those days, Rodio remembers that eight of the twenty-four boys in his class enrolled along with him. “In the spring, I came with my dad to visit the school. My older brother had also enrolled, but he only lasted three weeks. Me? I loved it from day one.” He loved it and thus began a connection that has lasted for decades. Mr. Rodio graduated from St. Augustine in 1970 and attended Villanova University finishing with a degree in marketing. Immediately after college, he went to work for his father, and within a year, he was ready for a move into teaching. “I had five preps that year with a starting salary of $7700. Honestly, I didn’t know I wanted to be a teacher until I became one, but it’s a thrill. Watching kids change and knowing that I have a small impact on them is the best part.” With a perspective of the school that few have, Rodio notes that the mission, the heart of St. Augustine Prep has remained consistent from his earliest days as a teacher through today. Reflecting, Coach

The legendary basketball coach John Wooden once said, “I think the teaching profession contributes more to the future of our society than any other single profession.” A coach can cement themself as a lasting influence on a young person’s life, but a teacher that coaches is something much more. Countless students and athletes have been taught, coached, and “entertained” by Coach Paul Rodio, a teacher who happens to be the greatest high school basketball coach in South Jersey. Credits and debits, ancient Egyptians and Greeks, foul shots and rebounds are some of the lessons that coach has taught us in the classroom and on the court. And though we may have forgotten some of the academic lessons, we will never forget the life lessons or the “many” wonderful stories that this man, who has dedicated his life to Catholic and Augustinian education, has bestowed upon us. This is his impact on St Augustine Preparatory School and the thousands of its students that he has connected with in a meaningful way. This is why he is a legend. It is not the 900 wins, the name of our gym, or the signature on the court that forms Coach Rodio’s legacy; rather it is young men that he has inspired to become leaders in our community, caring husbands, loving fathers, and Christian Gentlemen. Many of these graduates and assistant coaches that have been influenced by Coach Rodio have followed in his footsteps on the court.

Chris Carideo ’91 – Head Coach, Widener University David Orlandini ’84 – Assistant Coach, Vineland HS Scott Bittner ‘90 – Head Coach, Stockton University Matt Miles ’93 – Assistant Coach, Delsea Regional HS Scott Greenman ‘02 – Assistant Coach, American U. notes his great esteem for his colleagues, then and now. “I work with people who are genuine-- out for the kids. I treat my fellow teachers as equals, a lesson a learned from Mr. Spina. Let me tell you, I was in awe of Mr. Spina. It was tough to work for him, but I learned so much. I never felt inconsequential. He was never condescending. From Mr. Spina, I learned how to do things the right way.’ “Whether under the leadership of Fr. LaRosa, Fr. Galetto, or Fr.Reilly, the school hasn’t changed even a little bit. Cameraderie, brotherhood, pride -- it’s the same in 2016 as it was in 1978.” Kevin Burke, Dean of Academics, knows Rodio as both a former student and player. “Coach Rodio is an amazing father to his own four children, but he is truly the father of hundreds of young men. He made me believe in who I was beyond who I thought I was. He believed I could do things I did not believe I was capable of doing.” As a colleague, Burke sees the broader impact Coach Rodio has. “Coach Rodio is a motivator, and at a time in young men’s lives, a critical time, when they need a purpose, he provides it and then some.” He provides it without question or hesitation.”

Junior Marlon Hargis reflects on his coach’s impact. “Coach Rodio has always said that when you’re on one of his teams, ‘you either get it or you don’t.’ He says it can’t be explained, you just get it or you don’t.” Luckily, for students at St. Augustine Prep, it seems that when they are around coach they have a better chance of getting it. Senior Justyn Mutts agrees. When asked about the most important lesson their Coach has taught them, he has no hesitation. “Loyalty. With Coach Rodio, it doesn’t matter if it’s family, academics, advice...he’s the guy you can call on anytime. He’s got us. He’s always got us.” Young men in high school are facing a myriad of challenges and decisions, questions and conflicts, and this makes Coach Rodio’s demeanor and wisdom a perfect fit for this juncture in their lives. As Iaconelli explains, “Coach loves life and people. He is a larger than life personality whose mere presence can lift a room. He may be the most under-rated teacher in the building. Every student he has feels like he has connected with them in a personal way. He loves the underdog and embraces the kid who seems shy or awkward or troubled and gives him instant self-esteem. I can’t tell you how

many times I’ve told him about a student who seems to be in trouble - Coach will focus on that young man like a laser. That is the thing I love the most about him. He always says anybody can teach the “A” student or coach the Division I athlete, but he reaches the kids who really need it the most.” There have been many of those kids who really need it. Rodio tears up when thinking back over some of the kids who needed him most. “You know the most incredible thing about teaching? There’s so much power in what we do and say. It impacts the kids in ways we don’t always know. I just love watching the kids change, seeing them as adults with their own kids, and knowing that I had a small impact on who they are. It’s powerful.” Iaconelli sums up his friend and colleague well. “He is genuine and not only loves what he does but believes in the Prep and its mission. He has willed his program to the heights it now enjoys with his ability to make the people around him better, as players, coaches and people. Coach always does the right thing. He is the most loyal person I know.”

Evolution of

Expansion Article by Dennis Foreman ’87 // Photography by John Farinelli ’18 Brother Frank Cucinotta, O.S.A. discovered a property on the corner of Cedar and Railroad Avenues in 1959 with the intention of establishing an Augustinian school for young seminarians. At the time, there was one building (presently known as the Allegrini Monastery) and an old garage on the 118 acres of Richland’s Proud and Peaceful Glen. The Augustinian Friars and original faculty from the first graduating class in 1963 did not see the campus of St. Augustine Prep for what it was, rather, they saw what it could be. Founding faculty member Anthony Spina remarked last year when he received the Mendel Medal, “To know we were building something, a small school in South Jersey that could someday be a premier Prep school for boys in the state of NJ, it was a motivating factor.” Throughout the history of the school, Augustinians, families,

8

THE T RCH

FALL 2016

alumni, and friends have journeyed together to propel the Prep to what it is today. The evolution of expansion began on the very day Br. Frank and his fellow Friars purchased the property. The first phase of Augustinian Hall was complete in the early 60’s; an addition in 1981 featured a gymnasium (presently Spina Gym), a science lab, classrooms, and a school chapel. Enrollment hovered near 200 students for most of the 80’s and 90’s. A bold decision by Augustinian leadership in the Province of St. Thomas of Villanova to merge with the Vice Province of Our Mother of Good Counsel in 1995 began yet another phase in the growth of the Prep. Through a generous leadership gift by John Scarpa, and the collective work of the Prep community, the Edith Favretto Scarpa Arts and Sciences Building opened in 1997. It featured a state of the art computer learning lab, ample academic space, and a

beautiful library. As enrollment started to increase, there was a felt need to expand the programs and facilities to appeal to the best students in South Jersey. Fr. Donald F. Reilly, O.S.A., D. Min. who served as the Provincial and Chair of the Board from 2002-2010, approved the $21 million campus enhancement project that saw the installation of new athletic fields, and the construction of the Louis and Josephine Buondonno Forum, completed in 2007. Once again, the Prep community rallied together to improve the entire learning experience. “Throughout the history of the Prep, expansion and building is done to transform our campus into an ideal and vibrant educational environment. We build for students today and future generations of Hermit Brothers who will continue to be agents of change in our world and the leaders of tomorrow,” said Fr. Reilly O.S.A., now President of St. Augustine Prep. Mrs. Patricia Imbesi, Mr. Paul

Navone, and Mrs. Rose Davis, through their benefaction, ensured the project’s completion which reinvigorated the unique learning and student life experience that is St. Augustine Prep. The Prep has enjoyed significant success over the past ten years as enrollment has reached 700, academic excellence has earned students acceptance to some of the finest universities and academies in the country and Hermits Athletics continues to be a source of tremendous pride and achievement. Campus expansion has continued as The Navone Athletic Training Center opened in the fall of 2014 thanks to a gift from Mr. Paul Navone. The Prep suffered a great loss as his passing in November 2015 left a void in the community. Mrs. Davis fondly remembered the connection she shared with Mr. Navone, “Paul was part of the Prep Family. He was involved with the school before I came around and I kind of rode his apron strings! We became friends. He would wait for me before Wednesday Mass and I would do the same for him. I learned of his passing while on a Third Semester trip to Italy over the Thanksgiving break. The boys, chaperones and I went to a church and prayed the rosary in memory of Paul, it was a powerful and emotional experience.” Presently, the Prep community

is delighting in the most recent phase of the Campus Master Plan; the construction of The Vincent L. Buondonno Center and the transformation of the center driveway between Augustinian Hall and the Scarpa Building to a communal, landscaped, pedestrian path. Additionally, new technologies and infrastructure improvements including an upgrade to security cameras and rewiring of Augustinian Hall were included in this project. This initiative does much more than add another structure to the campus footprint. It will transition departments and offices in a more centralized way. The Offices of the President, Advancement, Enrollment Management, Finance, Communications, and the Anthony Spina Heritage Room will be housed in the Vincent L. Buondonno Center. Student Leadership and Campus Ministry will move to the Edith Favretto Scarpa Building. The College Counseling Center will now be on the first floor of the Forum (previously the Administrative Hallway). Additional academic space will be in the Vincent L. Buondonno Center, the second floor of the Forum, and the “forties wing” of Augustinian Hall as a result of the new office allocations. While many private, secondary institutions are faced with enrollment and operational

challenges, the Prep is blessed to have people in this loving community to forever change the experience for students. Mrs. Rose Davis has done exactly that over the past ten years through her generosity and commitment to St. Augustine Prep. The Louis and Josephine Buondonno Forum is named for her parents. Rose’s vision and passion fueled the decision to move forward with the construction of the Vincent L Buondonno Center, named in memory of her brother. “The boys inspire me. The faculty, Augustinians, and staff at the Prep are the best. I want the school to continue on to the future. I am honored to be a part of the best school in the state!’ On December 7th, The Very Reverend Michael DiGregorio, O.S.A., the Board of Directors, the Prep’s Leadership Team, and invited guests will formally dedicate The Vincent L. Buondonno Center and the newly developed Campus Commons during an evening ceremony. As the Prep surges forward, it is important to appreciate where we have been. It is this greatness on which we build. There have been many who have contributed to the school’s rich history. Rose reflected, “The Prep is the best thing that has ever happened to me!”

PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE FOR PREP EDUCATORS INSPIRED AND INSPIRING

By Kevin Burke ’00 Keeping up with trends in education is a daunting task. One of the most important changes gaining ground in education today is the push toward personalized learning for students. On its coattails? Personalized learning for educators. To be inspiring, educators must be inspired, and Personalized Professional Development (PPD) allows us to channel our passions into self-directed learning which has tremendous benefits for students. At St. Augustine, the faculty has eagerly embraced this new approach to professional development (PD), and its effects can be seen in classrooms across the campus. One of the unique aspects of a personalized approach is that it breaks away from traditional PD— hours-long “sit & get” inservice days and staff meetings and staid

FALL2016 2016 12 12 THETHET TRCHRCH FALL

classroom observations. In each of these past practices, teachers passively received information and feedback from a single source, typically an administrator, and the follow-up was cursory. In contrast, PPD is self-initiated and selfguided. In June, at our last faculty meeting of the school year, we tried a new approach to our in-service day and found it engaging and empowering. Ahead of the meeting, the usual paperwork and end-of-the-year information was disseminated via email. This allowed our time together to be used to engage in meaningful discourse about new approaches to teaching and new ways to better our instruction through technology. To accomplish this, we held a “Speed Dating” PD event. Four dynamic teachers each took the lead in the classroom and presented a ten minute overview of an innovative educational topic and how

each could be used to excite students and optimize learning: Mrs. Acquesta “Strategies to Check for Understanding”, Mr. Boston - “Understanding by Design”, Mrs. Vermeeren - “Google Classroom” and Mr. Puggi - “Project Based Learning.” Accountability is a necessary aspect of Professional Development and this approach holds no exception. To be truly effective, we must reflect on the value of our learning — just as we ask our students to do. Through this reflection comes autonomy, an inherent aspect of this approach to PD. An exciting example of accountability and autonomy in action can be seen in our new OBIO program (Observation by Invitation Only). This approach to classroom observations asks teachers to team with administrators to create and deliver innovative lessons. The observation then focuses on agreed upon

criteria for evaluation and reflection. This proved to be a highly effective way to reinvigorate our passions and share our classroom energy with one another. Through a personalized approach to PD, we exponentially increase our value to the school community -- in stark contrast to the traditional PD model which focuses solely on the individual teacher and too often, a small group of his or her students. Twitter has proven to be our most successful venue for incorporating all of the best aspects of Personalized Professional Development; it has allowed us to utilize social media in ways that have proven both dynamic and contagious. (Learn more about our talented educators and the strategies they use to connect to students,

parents, and other educators. Follow us on Twitter - #hermitschat) Innovation, passion, and learning are alive and well at St. Augustine Prep, not only amidst our students, but amidst our amazing faculty. This exciting new direction allows us to leverage our time and talent in truly inspiring ways. Through Personalized Professional Development, faculty members become stronger teachers, enthusiastic learners, and inspiring leaders.

T.C.P. The three letters evoke an almost universal response of fondness and alfredo-fueled

euphoria from Saint Augustine Prep students, regardless of age or background. This simple initialism stands for the one of the most characteristic foods of the Prep’s Consalo Dining Hall: tri-colored pasta. TCP, along with the signature smorgasbord of pizza, burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and especially Otis Spunkmeyer cookies, are just some of the most hallowed delicacies one can find in Richland. Everyday, throngs of students anxiously await in line to purchase this high quality cuisine that is an essential component of the Saint Augustine Prep experience. Purchasing breakfast, lunch, and snacks in-between classes are part of every Hermit’s daily routine, but there is much more to the Prep’s dining services than meets the eye. Who exactly is behind the culinary delight that provide physical sustenance to Hermits on a daily basis? To answer that question, I decided to go to the man in charge of the whole food operation at Saint Augustine Prep: 1995 Graduate, Chef Vinnie Berti. 18

THE T RCH

FALL 2016

What is your usual daily routine as the Director of Dining Services here at the Prep? I get here about 5:00-5:30 in the morning, start working on breakfast, [making] sandwiches, baking the cookies, and [after that], we get ready for lunch. There is some paperwork involved that I have to attend to, and while I do that, Chef Paul Barr handles some of the other responsibilities that jumpstarts our day. How do you determine the diverse schedule and menu for our lunches? That’s tough, because when you’re dealing with 700 students and 100 faculty members, and you have all kinds of different religious and ethnic backgrounds, that plays a little bit of a role [in the selection]. The season plays a little bit of a role. If we have the opportunity to get any fresh produce from some friends of the Prep, that tends [to be another factor], so there’s a lot of things that go into it. We are cooking for young men, so most of the time, pizza and chicken tenders are always easy, but we try to give them something a little different. What is your favorite food that you like to prepare for the students? I enjoy cooking any type of pasta because it seems that you guys enjoy that the most, whether it’s TCP or pasta and meatballs, so I’d have to say pasta. How were the dining services at the Prep when you were a student? They weren’t as involved; we had the basic cafeteria lunch. We did have pasta days and pizza days. Pasta days were probably the best, but it’s obviously [become] more involved as time has gone on and cooking for a large group with different ethnic backgrounds and trying to be a little more health conscious, so [the past dining services] were good but a little different.

As an eighth grader, what attracted you to attend Saint Augustine Prep? There were a lot of things: my sister graduated from OLMA, so that played a little bit of a role, with my mother and father having that connection with OLMA and the Prep. I knew people, whether it was my sister’s friends who visited here or just a couple guys who were older than me (I had a couple cousins who came here), so it was a lot of things. There were sports (obviously) and academics, so there were a lot of different things that attracted me to the school. Do you have any chefs whom you admire the most? There’s several: Marc Vetri (he’s from Philadelphia, and he has a bunch of restaurants in the City of Philadelphia), Mario Batali, Michael Chiarello. Those guys, coming from an Italian family, have an Italian background. There are a lot of people I’ve watched and learned from and read books about, but those guys stick out. As a student and alumnus of the Prep, what were some lessons that you learned from your time here that you use now in your day-to-day routine? I guess the most obvious is Truth, Unity, and Love, but I think the one main thing besides those three is the Brotherhood. I knew guys who graduated [from] here who work with me: Coach Rizzo, Mr. Foreman, Coach Rodio. We all have the same values and believe in the same things, so I think Brotherhood, no matter what decade or year, deep down lives on. Chef Berti is a diligent and dedicated man who spearheads one of the most beloved and treasured elements of the Prep: the dining services. His team is second to none, with their constant presence not only during the school day, but also at crucial events such as the assortment of parent meetings, athletic competitions, sports banquets, the annual “Night at the Forum” gala, HermitFest, and a variety of other occasions. I would encourage all alumni to return to Richland’s proud and peaceful glen to re-experience the great food that has made such a positive impact on their own lives, as well the lives of so many young men. FIRE: I CARRY THE

Andrew Moffa ’12

BY MANUEL C. DIJAMCO ‘99

In preparation for the upcoming academic year, Fr. Reilly implored the Prep community to take ownership of the year’s theme “I Carry the Fire.” The phrase can be interpreted in a variety of ways but the “Ten Augustinian Values” immediately come to mind: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Love Interiority Humility Devotion to study and the pursuit of wisdom 5. Freedom 6. Community 7. Common good 8. Humble and generous service 9. Friendship 10. Prayer

“Future Leaders of Atlantic County” program. Andrew’s senior year took him south to Baltimore, MD to represent St. Augustine at the annual Johns Hopkins Model UN Conference. Rounding out his time at the Prep, Andrew earned the “Christian Gentleman” Award and was off to continue his academic career at Villanova University in the fall of 2012.

Supported by a wonderful family and four years of Augustinian based tutelage at his disposal - Andrew enjoyed at Villanova much of the same success that he had found at the Prep. However, in this instance, his four years on the “Main Line” would afford After giving thought to him the opportunity to make each and every one of these an impact on a much broader Augustinian Values, one cannot scale; Andrew would be help but think of 2012 Prep sharing his kind-heartedness, graduate and 2016-17 Fulbright generosity, and passion for Scholar Andrew Moffa. teaching across the entire world. Andrew’s desire to assist others all over the globe spurred his involvement with the Office of Disability Services (ODS) and the “LEVEL” program at Villanova. His work with both programs led to a heartwarming experience at Ramapo for Children, a camp where he worked with both adults and children alike suffering from severe autism. Andrew’s dedication and selfless work eventually led to the most impressive addition to his rapidly growing résumé the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship. His well-deserved designation as a Fulbright Scholar would allow him to follow his passion for teaching and community service. Following his graduation from Villanova last spring, Andrew traveled to South Korea where he currently serves as an international cultural ambassador at an elementary school teaching English. Andrew is a true inspiration for us all and he most certainly carries the FIRE!

SPENCERWETHERINGTON ’16 FROM RICHLAND WITH LOVE

BY MANUEL C. DIJAMCO ’99 2016 graduate Spencer Wetherington has accomplished quite a bit since receiving his diploma from Fr. Reilly last May. Spencer followed graduation with the completion of his summer dance intensive in New York City with the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in early August. At the conclusion of their final performance in NYC, the storied Academy would award two male dancers and two female dancers with the opportunity to travel to Moscow. The four talented recipients would train in the Russian capital for two weeks and later perform at the conclusion of the training session. Performing for the past three summers with the internationally renowned ballet company, Spencer was awarded 2nd place in his previous two years with the program. The summer of 2016 would be the charm as he secured 1st place and earned the opportunity to make a grand return to Russia. As a participant of the summer intensive, Spencer’s stay in Moscow was extended and his 1st place award granted him the chance to study and train with the ballet company for the balance of the upcoming year. Spencer is no stranger to Moscow as he had spent an abbreviated amount of time with the Bolshoi Ballet Academy in previous years. Recognized as one of the foremost ballet companies in the world, the history of the Bolshoi dates as far back as 1776. Spencer’s current stint in Moscow began this past October and will continue well into the month of June. He is very thankful of the opportunities and support that the Prep bestowed upon him over the past four years. In correspondence with Fr. Reilly, Spencer graciously commented “I wanted to thank you for your support of my passion over the course of my four years at the Prep. I don’t think any other school would’ve been as open to other schooling options based on the unique opportunities that have presented themselves to me. The guidance and support the Prep has given me has made a huge difference in who I am today.” The Torch encourages alumni to share with us all of your achievements and other news of note. We also accept photos and will include them as space permits. Please mail all updates/photos to St. Augustine Prep (The Torch), 611 Cedar Ave., Richland, NJ 08350.
