Dear Prep Community, The energy and enthusiasm on campus is palpable as we enter the final chapter of the academic year, and the spring sports season at St. Augustine Prep. This vibrant community continues to embrace the passion and commitment that characterizes Hermit Brothers in the academic space, in the athletic arena, and in their service to others. “I Carry the Fire,” the theme for this school year, continues to be exceptionally appropriate and realized in the Prep’s robust co-curricular offerings. Leadership skills such as integrity, empathy, temperance, and accountability are actively lived by the school’s scholar athletes and their coaches. The excellence experienced on the playing fields translates to life-long values and expectations for these young men. As you enjoy the Prep’s beautiful campus, you can see the results of those who further the mission of the school in a meaningful way. The Vincent L. Buondonno Center and the newly developed Campus Commons have changed the learning environment for our school community. On behalf of my fellow Augustinian Friars, please accept my gratitude and well wishes to the scholar athletes, their families, and their coaches as they represent the school and Carry the Fire. Additionally, the valued partners you see in this handsome media guide provide the resources needed to make Hermits Athletics a reality; they are a blessing to us. Hermit Pride is alive and well! In Augustine,

Fr. Donald F. Reilly, O.S.A., D.Min. President

Dear Hermit Nation, On behalf of the St. Augustine Prep Athletic Department, welcome to a new spring sports season. Athletics is an excellent way for young men to grow both physically and emotionally, something I quickly learned during my time as a student at the Prep. Through athletics, I acquired valuable skills in time management, problem solving, motivation, and team building— skills that left me well-prepared for life beyond high school. We know that through athletic experiences, students also gain these valuable life skills. From tryouts, to practices, to games, the Athletic Department strives each day to support our students, coaches, and families, and to further the mission of the Prep through participation in sports. Along with the entire St. Augustine Prep community, we take great pride in the accomplishments of our scholar-athletes. Representing St. Augustine Prep on the playing field requires determination, dedication, and discipline. These demands require the successful management of academic obligations and athletic responsibilities. As a result, the students who participate in athletics are truly accomplished young men. The Athletics Media Guide is the outlet through which we celebrate these scholar-athletes, and we are grateful to the many generous benefactors who have assisted us in creating these opportunities for our students. We wish the best of luck to our scholar-athletes, their coaches, their families, and their fans this spring season. May we all continue to celebrate success and Hermit Pride during the rest of the year. Go Hermits!

Dear Hermit Fans, The spring sports season is always an exciting one at St. Augustine Prep! The nine varsity-level programs that represent our school so well every spring showcase the broad spectrum of our scholar-athletes’ talents. Our Hermit brothers consistently demonstrate their pride in representing the Prep, and their unwavering commitment to sportsmanship and to the pursuit of excellence helps to define our mission perfectly. One of the characteristics that continues to make St. Augustine Prep so unique is the community engagement, support, and celebration across all of our scholar-athletes and programs. We compete together, more often than not we win together, and most importantly we lift each other up, in the spirit of brotherhood that so perfectly characterizes the entirety of the Prep community. The Hermit bond and the Augustinian mission are strong, and while they ground us in common values and goals, they also propels us forward, equipped to pursue and achieve those goals. As we move toward the end of the 2016-2017 academic year and into the spring sports season, we remember our previous accomplishments by using them as a springboard to the pursuit of excellence both on and off the field. With this as a backdrop, we recognize the dedication, pride, and commitment of all those who play such a vital role in making Hermits Athletics one of the premier overall programs in southern New Jersey, the state, and the region. We also want to take an opportunity to extend our most sincere gratitude to all of our Hermit alumni brothers, as well as the past and present families, friends, and benefactors of St. Augustine Prep. Our young men on campus today, and every one of our scholar-athletes, stand on the shoulders of those who came before them – we are extremely grateful for your loyalty and support. We hope you enjoy the spring sports season, and this publication. We encourage you to continue to strengthen the Hermit network and bond by supporting our generous and valued partnership sponsors. HERMITSBASEBALL -- HEAD COACH

Coach Mike Bylone (class of 1986), is entering his 10th year as

the head coach of the Hermits baseball program. Prior to becoming head coach in 2008, he spent four years as a varsity assistant at the Prep. Coach Bylone’s teams have an overall won-loss record of 178 – 72. Bylone is the current vice-president of the South Jersey Baseball Coaches Association, and the Cape Atlantic League Representative for the SJBCA. He was selected as the High School Regional Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association in 2014. Under his direction, the Hermits baseball program captured its first ever New Jersey State Championship (2011), and the prestigious Diamond Classic Championship (2014), also a program first. His 2011 squad set a school record for wins in a season (27) and a final ranking of #3 in the state of New Jersey. The 2014 team achieved the program’s highest ever final rankings - #2 in the state and #1 in south Jersey - by the Newark Star Ledger. Bylone has coached numerous scholar-athletes who have, and currently are succeeding both in the classroom and on the baseball diamond at the collegiate level. Hermits baseball has also become a recognized high school program among the professional ranks; in 2015, the program celebrated its third player drafted by Major League Baseball over the past two seasons. Ed Charlton ’11 was selected by the Cincinnati Reds in the 23rd round; he followed Joe Gatto ’14 (2nd Round – Angels) and Zach Warren ’14 (23rd Round – Pirates), who were drafted in 2014 and were the first ever Prep baseball players selected out of high school. A native of Buena Vista Township, NJ, Bylone is a 1986 graduate of St. Augustine Prep where he was a four-year varsity baseball player. He attended St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA where he played baseball for the Hawks. He received his bachelor’s degree from SJU in marketing, in 1990.

HERMITSRUGBY -- HEAD COACH

Coach Brendan Towell heads into his fifth season as a member of the St.

Augustine Prep Rugby program, and his first season as head coach. The Hermits feature the only high school rugby team in South Jersey and have quickly built a strong reputation with over 30 players competing at the club or varsity level in colleges and universities across the country. Through the leadership of key upperclassmen, Hermit Rugby has reached new heights over the past three academic years. In the spring of 2015, the team reached the New Jersey State Championship game, finishing second in the state. The success would continue in the fall of 2015, as the Prep went one step further and captured the first Rugby 7’s New Jersey State Championship in school history. The spring of 2016 would serve as the backdrop for another strong run, culminating in a state runner-up finish following the Hermits’ third appearance in the State Championship game. The 2016 spring season was a memorable one for Hermit Rugby as it provided yet another key milestone in the program’s evolution at the Prep – over 20 players and their parents traveled to Ireland for ten days over the Easter break to train and compete in the birthplace of the sport. Coach Towell is Augustinian educated, having attended both Monsignor Bonner High School in Pennsylvania and Merrimack College in Northern Massachusetts. Following the completion of his Religious & Theological Studies degree in 2008, Coach Towell would return to Monsignor Bonner as a teacher and also assist as a faculty moderator for the Friars’ Rugby program. Arriving at the Prep in January of 2010, Coach Towell soon immersed himself in the Hermit Rugby program serving as an assistant coach under the tutelage of former head coach Andy Lewis. Coach Lewis’ boundless experience and expertise was instrumental in Towell’s development and ascension to the position of head coach. During Coach Towell’s coaching career at the Prep, the Hermit Rugby program has surged in participation, popularity, performance, and results. With a returning core of talented players, the squad is poised to defend its NJ State 7’s title this fall.

HERMITSGOLF -- HEAD COACH

Coach Len Dolson will be entering his 20th season as the St.

Augustine Prep golf coach. He was named the National Federation of High Schools Coaches Association’s State Coach of the Year in 2006 and has an overall career record of 338-15. Dolson is one of the most decorated coaches in south Jersey, guiding the Hermits to seventeen league titles, six south Jersey titles (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2010) and three State Championships (2001, 2002, 2003). His teams have finished the regular season undefeated thirteen different times, including the 2015 campaign when they finished 18-0 on their way to winning the Cape Atlantic League American Division Championship and the Carl Arena Tournament. St. Augustine Prep golf is a perennial top team in south Jersey, while challenging themselves against the top teams in the area and the state; the team competes in the extremely competitive, Non-Public A State Tournament, and almost every top tournament available in New Jersey. Coach credits his passion for the game to his father, who took him to the golf course nearly every weekend as a child. His favorite part of the game is how it allows him to teach his players honesty, integrity, patience, and sportsmanship, which are values they can take with them after their high school careers are finished. Coach Dolson currently works at Hidden Creek Golf Club and is a 1983 graduate of Buena High School. 22 W. Landis Avenue, Unit Q Vineland, NJ 08360 sirspeedyvineland@gmail.com

Huntsman has worked tirelessly to develop knowledgeable sailors, and to instill in them a love of the sport and of the sea. Prior to coaching at St. Augustine Prep, Coach Huntsman had a decorated career as a sailor. He was a member of the Christopher Newport University sailing team from 1987 to 1991; he graduated from the university with a B.S. in science business management and administration. HERMITSLACROSSE- HEAD COACH John (J.C.) Valore has served for over a decade as the head coach for St.

Augustine Prep lacrosse. He has been the driving force behind guiding the program from its inception, to one that has consistently earned national recognition. Coach Valore is a native of Moorestown, NJ where he played high school lacrosse. He is a graduate of the University of Delaware, where he continued his LAX career at the collegiate level. He has been named the NJ Non-Public A Coach of the Year once (2010), and Atlantic City Press Coach of the Year four times. Valore has led his Hermits teams to eight conference titles, 7 Non-Public A state tournament semi-final appearances, and two New Jersey state championship berths while facing some of the toughest competition in the state and the country. Coach Valore’s ambitious schedule has seen the Hermits play teams such as IMG (FL), Episcopal Academy (PA), Delbarton (NJ), and Malvern Prep (PA); thanks in large part to wins over powerhouse opponents. Having also served as the coach of Team NJ in the prestigious Under Armour Games for three consecutive years, Valore has aided in the development of some of the top players in the country; his players have included 15 US Lacrosse High School All-Americans and three Academic All-Americans. Valore is also the founder and director of SouthShore Lacrosse, and has also been instrumental in the fundamental coaching, mentoring, and development of youth and high school players throughout the club lacrosse circuit. Twenty-seven former Hermits lacrosse players are set to play at the collegiate level this season. Coach Valore is an history teacher at St. Augustine Prep, and is also currently the Dean of Student Leadership. He resides in Mullica Hill, NJ with his wife, Vanessa, also a University of Delaware graduate, and his son Luca (6) and daughter Gia (2).

HERMITSROWING - HEAD COACH

Ray D’Amico enters his seventeenth season as head coach of the St. Augustine Prep rowing program. Coach D’Amico has built Hermits rowing into a premier program in the state of New Jersey and it is widely considered to be one of the top scholastic rowing teams in the United States. During D’Amico’s tenure, Prep rowing has won ten straight State Championship Men’s Point Trophies, ten consecutive County Championships Men’s Point Trophies, and two Overall Points Trophies. The rowing team has won two National Championship titles and one Stotesbury Regatta gold. In 2009, the Prep’s varsity eight crew won the prestigious Cities Championship. The Hermits have been awarded five invitations to the US Rowing Youth National Championship, with best finishes of seventh for varsity eight (2008) and fifth for lightweight eight (2007). Coach D’Amico has been a long-time fixture in the South Jersey rowing community. He is a board member of Viking Rowing Club where he and his wife, Janice, have conducted a youth rowing program for the past twenty-plus years. He is also a former board member of Crescent Boat Club in Philadelphia, PA. He was named the 2015 coach of the year by the Schuylkill Navy (the oldest athletic governing body in the US) for his work with the summer youth program. D’Amico has been voted by his peers as Coach of the Year in Atlantic County (2005), and is a three-time Atlantic City Press Coach of the Year. D’Amico credits the success of the program to the dedication of his longtime assistant coaches - Joe Maguire has been with the program since its inception in 1998, and Lou Renzulli has been with Hermits rowing for over the past decade. Prep rowing boasts many individual accomplishments, including numerous Dad Vail Regatta and IRA Regatta medalists, two World Championship gold medalists (Neil McPeak, Jimmy Germano), and one bronze medalist (Ted Baumgardner).
