Dear Prep Community, There is a palpable energy and enthusiasm on campus as academic year 2016-2017 begins at St. Augustine Prep. “I Carry the Fire,” the theme for this school year, is exceptionally appropriate and realized in the Prep’s robust co-curricular offerings. Dear Hermit Nation, On behalf of the St. Augustine Prep Athletic Department, welcome to a new fall sports season. Athletics is an excellent way for young men to grow both physically and emotionally; something I quickly learned during my time as a student at the Prep. Through athletics, I acquired valuable skills in time management, problem solving, motivation, and team building— skills that left me well-prepared for life beyond high school.

We know that through athletic experiences, students also gain these valuable life skills. From tryouts, to practices, to games, the Athletic Department strives each day to support our students, coaches, and families and to further the mission of the Prep through participation in sports.

Along with the entire St. Augustine Prep community, we take great pride in the accomplishments of our scholar-athletes. Representing St. Augustine Prep on the playing field requires determination, dedication and discipline. These demands require the successful management of academic obligations and athletic responsibilities. As a result, the students who participate in athletics are truly accomplished young men. The Athletics Media Guide is the outlet through which we celebrate these scholar-athletes, and we are grateful to the many generous benefactors who have assisted us in creating these opportunities for our students.

Dear Hermit Fans, The just-completed academic year was a banner one for Hermits athletics! The awards and accolades earned by our scholar-athletes and their coaches are almost too numerous to mention without assuming the risk of excluding a player, a coach, or a team. However, while we all take pride in individual accomplishments and team achievements, the thing that continues to make St. Augustine Prep so unique is the community engagement, support, and celebration across all of our programs – we compete together, more often than not we win together, and most importantly we lift each other up, in the spirit of brotherhood that so perfectly characterizes the entirety of the Prep community.

As we look ahead to the 2016-2017 athletic campaign, we remember our previous year’s collective accomplishments by using them as yet another building block in the pursuit of excellence both on and off the field. HERMITSFOOTBALL -- HEAD COACH Coach Mark Reardon enters his fifth season at the helm of St. Augustine Prep football. Despite graduating some key players on both sides of the ball, the Hermits are poised to make another strong run this season, their first in the newly formed West Jersey Football League (WJFL). The program will compete in the Continental Division, which includes familiar foes Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Township, Vineland, Millville, and Bridgeton. The WJFL will offer the Hermits with some exciting crossover game opportunities, as well; this year, the squad takes on Williamstown and St. Joseph’s of Hammonton.

Reardon’s coaching career began at the University of Albany in 1994, serving as the program’s secondary coach and special teams coordinator. His ascent continued at Siena College where he was appointed as the defensive coordinator and assistant head coach from 1996 - 1998. Reardon would then return to his alma mater, Lafayette College, serving as special teams coordinator and secondary coach from 1998 – 2000. For the next 11 years, Coach Reardon shared his talents at Villanova University; coaching the secondary from 2001 – 2011, and concurrently serving as the defensive coordinator from 2005 through the end of his tenure at the school. His run at Villanova included a 2009 FCS National Championship, where under his leadership the Wildcats were ranked as the 6th best scoring defense in the nation.

Coach Reardon began working and coaching at the Prep in 2012.

In addition to his coaching duties, he serves as a counselor in the Department of College Guidance.

HERMITSSOCCER -- HEAD COACH

Coach Steve Rolando (Class of 1987) is entering his fifth season as St. Augustine Prep’s head soccer coach. His overall record is 56-24-4.

In addition to being a graduate of the Prep, Coach Rolando is an alumnus of the Hermits Soccer Program and is also a 2012 inductee of the Prep Cultural Hall of Fame.

The majority of Rolando’s coaching career has been dedicated to working with his alma mater. He was an assistant coach at the Prep from 1993 – 2012, for many of those years serving as the top assistant to legendary coach Les Heggan. His run as an assistant included three state championships (2003, 2005, 2010) and numerous CAL Division Titles.

Rolando has led the program as its head coach since the 2012 season. Under his leadership, Hermits soccer has won three straight Cape Atlantic League (CAL) American Division championships (2013-2015). Last season, the team reached the South Jersey Final losing the tightly contested match in overtime.

Coach Rolando resides in Washington Township, NJ. He is an officer in the Washington Township Police Department.

HERMITSCROSS COUNTRY -- HEAD COACH

Coach Lawrence Hickman enters his second season as the Hermits cross country coach. He is also an assistant with the track and field program, a position he has held since 2014.

Coach Hickman helped lead a turnaround for the Hermits cross country team last year, as the squad improved to a 5-3 record and put forth a strong showing at the CAL championships.

Since the beginning of his coaching career in 1999, Hickman has been a major force behind several championship cross country and track teams in the area. His coaching career has taken him through stops at Winslow Township High School and Cumberland Regional High School.

Coach Hickman is a graduate of Wilmington University, and he holds degrees in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, and Education.

HERMITSRUGBY 7’S -- HEAD COACH Coach Brendan Towell heads into his fifth season as a member of the St. Augustine Prep Rugby program, and his first season as head coach.

The Hermits feature the only high school rugby team in South Jersey and have quickly built a strong reputation with over 30 players competing at the club or varsity level in colleges and universities across the country.

Through the leadership of key upperclassmen, Hermit Rugby has reached new heights over the past three academic years. In the spring of 2015, the team reached the New Jersey State Championship game, finishing second in the state. The success would continue in the fall of 2015, as the Prep went one step further and captured the first Rugby 7’s New Jersey State Championship in school history. The spring of 2016 would serve as the backdrop for another strong run, culminating in a state runner-up finish following the Hermits’ third appearance in the State Championship game.

The 2016 spring season was a memorable one for Hermit Rugby as it provided yet another key milestone in the program’s evolution at the Prep – over 20 players and their parents traveled to Ireland for ten days over the Easter break to train and compete in the birthplace of the sport.

Coach Towell is Augustinian educated, having attended both Monsignor Bonner High School in Pennsylvania and Merrimack College in Northern Massachusetts. Following the completion of his Religious & Theological Studies degree in 2008, Coach Towell would return to Monsignor Bonner as a teacher and also assist as a faculty moderator for the Friars’ Rugby program.

Arriving at the Prep in January of 2010, Coach Towell soon immersed himself in the Hermit Rugby program serving as an assistant coach under the tutelage of former head coach Andy Lewis. Coach Lewis’ boundless experience and expertise was instrumental in Towell’s development and ascension to the position of head coach.

During Coach Towell’s coaching career at the Prep, the Hermit Rugby program has surged in participation, popularity, performance, and results. With a returning core of talented players, the squad is poised to defend its NJ State 7’s title this fall.

HERMITSSURFING -- HEAD COACH

Coach Kevin Morris enters his sixth year as St. Augustine Prep’s surfing coach. He has been an avid surfer his entire life and has taught the sport for over 25 years.

As a prep athlete, Coach Morris captained the Holy Spirt High School Surf Team and led them to multiple amateur surf contests up-and-down the east coast. In 2005 he participated in pro events throughout the country, including a 2nd place finish in the Atlantic City Pro Competition. He is also a member of the Heritage Surf Team, which won the 2016 Oakley Surf Shop Team Challenge Northeast Regional Event. Coach Morris is also a sanctioned judge (ASP/WSL) with experience judging the World Qualifying Series and other premier surfing events.

During his time at St. Augustine Prep, the Hermits surfing team has earned a top three finish in New Jersey on three separate occassions, including a number one overall ranking which secured a New Jersey State Championship.
