Even so, you are recommended to keep a close eye on your personal belongings in busy areas and on the metro. When driving, but also as pedestrians, watch out for mopeds and motorbikes. There are lots of them around Athens and they don’t always obey the Highway Code. Τap water in Athens is safe to drink. However, you can find a wide variety of bottled water in shops and restaurants.

6 Arriving in Athens / Φθάνοντας στην Αθήνα Arriving by air / Μέσω Αέρος “Eleftherios Venizelos” Athens International Airport The primary entry into Athens is El. Venizelos airport, situated 33 km (20.5 miles) east of Athens. To get to town you have a choice between metro, suburban railway, bus, taxi and, of course, car hire. AIA is connected with Athens via the metro Line 3, Egaleo - Airport and the ticket costs 8 € while the return ticket costs 14€. Alternatively you can take the suburban railway to Nreatziotissa station where you can take the Metro to the city centre. (see page 8, for more information). AIA is connected with the greater area of Athens via four bus routes / X93 from Kifissos & Liosion intercity bus stations / X95 from Syntagma / X96 from Piraeus Port / X97 from Dafni metro station. Tickets cost € 5, reduced €2,5 for one trip to/from AIA. All the above buses run 24hrs. Regional buses (KTEL) connect AIA with the following destinations: Port of Rafina, Markopoulo, Port of Lavrio, Kalyvia & Keratea. Taxi from the airport to the city centre takes an average of 30 to 40 minutes, depending on the traffic. Expect to pay from € 35 to € 55 (including freeway toll and luggage surcharge). Most major Rent A Car companies operate have their offices at the airport.

Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Αθηνών «Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος» Η κύρια είσοδος της πόλης που βρίσκεται 33 χλμ., ανατολικά της Αθήνας. Η πρόσβαση στο κέντρο μπορεί να γίνει με τα ΜΜΜ με ταξί ή φυσικά με ενοικιασμένο αυτοκίνητο. Το αεροδρόμιο συνδέεται με το Μετρό μέσω της γραμμής 3, Αιγάλεω - Αεροδρόμιο και το εισιτήριο κοστίζει 8 € ενώ το μετ' επιστροφής 14€. Εναλλακτικά μπορείτε να επιβιβαστείτε στον προαστιακό και να μεταβείτε μέχρι το

σταθμό Νερατζιώτισσα όπου θα συνεχίσετε με το μετρό. (βλέπε σελ.8) Το αεροδρόμιο συνδέεται με την Αθήνα με 4 λεωφορειακές γραμμές: Χ93 από το Σταθμό ΚΤΕΛ του Κηφισού & της Λιοσίων / Χ95 από το Σύνταγμα / Χ96 από το λιμάνι του Πειραιά / Χ97 από το Μετρό Δάφνη. Το εισιτήριο κοστίζει € 5, μειωμένο € 2,5, για μια απλή διαδρομή. Όλα τα λεωφορεία λειτουργούν 24 ώρες. Λεωφορεία ΚΤΕΛ συνδέουν το αεροδρόμιο με το λιμάνι της Ραφήνας, το Μαρκόπουλο, το Λιμάνι του Λαυρίου, τα Καλύβια και την Κερατέα. Το ταξί από το αεροδρόμιο έως το κέντρο της Αθήνας κοστίζει από € 35 έως € 55 συμπεριλαμβανομένων των διοδίων και των τελών αεροδρομίου και αποσκευών. Η διαδρομή διαρκεί 30 με 40 λεπτά αναλόγως της κίνησης. Οι μεγαλύτερες εταιρίες ενοικιαζόμενων οχημάτων έχουν τα γραφεία τους στο αεροδρόμιο.

Arriving by sea / Μέσω θαλάσσης If you arrive in Piraeus by boat, you can use the Metro to take you to the city centre (see page 7 for more information). There is a free bus service that runs inside the harbour you can use to take you there if you disembark far away from the main entrance. Taxis are available on the front of the main terminal. Do note that they charge extra for pick up and luggage. Από τον Πειραιά, μπορείτε πολύ εύκολα να μεταβείτε στο κέντρο της πόλης με το Μετρό (βλέπε σελ. 8). Arriving by train, long distance buses Μέσω τρένων ή υπεραστικών λεωφορείων The main train station (Larissis station) is not very far from the city centre. You can use the Metro (there is a station outside the main terminal) or a bus to take you anywhere in Athens. There are two long distance Bus stations. They are connected with the city centre and major Metro stations via buses. Taxis are available on the stations. Do note that they charge extra for pick up and luggage. Sea turtle have lived on our planet for over 150 million years. Today they face extinction. At sea, turtles are hit by speedboats, become entangled in nets, ingest fishing hooks, or are deliberately injured by humans. Nesting beaches are being reduced due to increasing tourist development. ARCHELON, The Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece was founded in 1983. It studies and protects sea turtles and their habitats through monitoring and management at the most important nesting areas in Greece, Zakynthos, Peloponnesus and Crete. In 1994, ARCHELON set up the first Sea Turtle Rescue Centre, located at the 3rd Marina of Glyfada-Athens. Basic gaol of the Rescue Centre is to rehabilitate and release turtles, but to also raise public awareness. ARCHELON also operates a rescue network all over Greece in cooperation with state bodies in order to locate and transfer injured and sick turtles to the Rescue Centre. Επιπλέον, οι παραλίες ωοτοκίας συρρικνώνονται εξαιτίας της άναρχης δόμησης. Ο ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ, Σύλλογος για την Προστασία της Θαλάσσιας Χελώνας ιδρύθηκε το 1983. Εργάζεται για την προστασία, διαχείριση και την μελέτη της θαλάσσιας χελώνας και των βιοτόπων τους στις σημαντικότερες περιοχές ωοτοκίας της Ελλάδας, στη Ζάκυνθο, Πελοπόννησο και Κρήτη Το Κέντρο Διάσωσης Θαλάσσιων Χελωνών ξεκίνησε τη λειτουργία του το 1994, επάνω στην 3η μαρίνα της Γλυφάδας, κοντά στην Αθήνα. Οι κυριότεροι στόχοι του Κέντρου Διάσωσης είναι η περίθαλψη και απελευθέρωση των χελωνών αλλά και η ευαισθητοποίηση του κοινού. Σε συνεργασία με Κρατικούς φορείς, ο ΑΡΧΕΛΩΝ λειτουργεί δίκτυο διάσωσης σε όλη την Ελλάδα με σκοπό τον εντοπισμό και τη μεταφορά στο Κέντρο Διάσωσης άρρωστων και τραυματισμένων χελωνών. The theme is inspired by ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, however all the artworks were created by contemporary artists who live in the Netherlands. No less than 55 artists were asked to create one linocut each, inspired by the archaeological collection of the Allard Pierson Museum in Amsterdam, a joint project on the initiative of the Stichting Beeldende Kunst Amsterdam (Fine Arts Foundation). The Herakleidon Museum furthermore invited two Greek artists, who reside in the Netherlands, to contribute installations on the same theme. The archaeological collection of the Allard Pierson museum includes art objects and utensils from several ancient civilizations of the Mediterranean, among which the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian civilizations. Contemporary View – Ancient Cultures provides a versatile glimpse of the rich heritage of the Mediterranean, through the personal interpretations and creations of today’s artists, when confronted with the remains of our collective past. Η συλλογή αρχαίων ευρημάτων του Μουσείου Allard Pierson περιλαμβάνει έργα τέχνης και χρηστικά αντικείμενα από διάφορους αρχαίους πολιτισμούς της Μεσογείου, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο Ελληνικός, ο Ρωμαϊκός και ο Αιγυπτιακός πολιτισμός. Η έκθεση Σύγχρονη Ματιά – Αρχαίοι Πολιτισμοί προσφέρει μια πολύπλευρη ματιά στην πλούσια πολιτιστική κληρονομιά της Μεσογείου, μέσα από τις προσωπικές ερμηνείες και δημιουργίες σύγχρονων καλλιτεχνών, όταν αυτοί βρέθηκαν αντιμέτωποι με τα απομεινάρια του κοινού μας παρελθόντος.

“MYTH AND COINAGE” The National Archaeological Museum, the Numismatic Museum and the Alpha Bank Numismatic Collection are joining forces for the first time and are organising the tempo-

rary exhibition “MYTH AND COINAGE”, which will be concurrently presented in both Museums. The Exhibition highlights the relationship between the Greek Mythology and the coinage of antiquity and focuses on the depiction, management and use of myth on the faces of coins from the 7th century BC onwards. Two complementary titles describe the content of the Exhibition at each Museum. “The Illustration of the Myth” will be presented at the National Archaeological Museum while “The Use of the Myth” will be presented at the Numismatic Museum. Educational programmes intended for children aged 8 to 14 will be conducted during the Exhibition. These programmes will be offered free of charge and by prior telephone arrangement. D2. MAP 2. 17/5-04/9/2011 “WALL PAINTINGS FROM STENI EUBOEA: THE REPATRIATION” The exhibition presents seven wall paintings from the 16th century by the Byzantine church of Paleopanaghia in Evia, which had been forcibly removed from the monument in the 70s. Four were found in Basel, Switzerland a few years ago and were returned to Greece to the Byzantine Museum in February 2010. The other three were found crushed on the floor of the church after vandalism in 1975 and they were restored in the restoration workshops of the Byzantine and Christian Museum. F5. MAP 2. DIARY • ΗΜΕΡΟΛΟΓΙΟ «ΤΟΙΧΟΓΡΑΦIΕΣ ΑΠO ΤΗ ΣΤΕΝH ΕΥΒΟΪΑΣ: Η ΕΠΙΣΤΡΟΦΗ» Στην έκθεση παρουσιάζονται επτά αξιόλογες τοιχογραφίες του 16ου αιώνα από τον βυζαντινό ναό της Παλαιοπαναγιάς στη Στενή Ευβοίας, οι οποίες είχαν βιαίως αποσπασθεί από το μνημείο στη δεκαετία του ’70. Οι τέσσερις από αυτές εντοπίστηκαν στη Βασιλείας της Ελβετίας πριν μερικά χρόνια και μετά από ενέργειες των αρμοδίων υπηρεσιών του Υπουργείου Πολιτισμού γύρισαν στην Ελλάδα, στο Βυζαντινό Μουσείο, τον Φεβρουάριο του 2010. Οι άλλες τρεις, που είχαν βρεθεί θρυμματισμένες στο πάτωμα του ναού μετά τους βανδαλισμούς των αρχαιοκαπήλων το 1975, αποκαταστάθηκαν στα Εργαστήρια Συντήρησης του Βυζαντινού και Χριστιανικού Μουσείου, όπου τα σπαράγματα είχαν σταλεί για φύλαξη. Πενήντα πέντε καλλιτέχνες κλήθηκαν να δημιουργήσουν από ένα χαρακτικό σε λινόλαιο, εμπνευσμένο από τη συλλογή αρχαίων ευρημάτων του Μουσείου Allard Pierson, στο Άμστερνταμ, ένα κοινό εγχείρημα με πρωτοβουλία του Stichting Beeldende Kunst Amsterdam (Ίδρυμα Εικαστικών Τεχνών Άμστερνταμ). Επιπλέον, το Μουσείο Ηρακλειδών προσκάλεσε και δύο Έλληνες καλλιτέχνες, που κατοικούν στις Κάτω Χώρες, να συνεισφέρουν με εικαστικές εγκαταστάσεις, εμπνευσμένες από το ίδιο θέμα. Η συλλογή αρχαίων ευρημάτων του Μουσείου Allard Pierson περιλαμβάνει έργα τέχνης και χρηστικά αντικείμενα από διάφορους αρχαίους πολιτισμούς της Μεσογείου, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο Ελληνικός, ο Ρωμαϊκός και ο Αιγυπτιακός πολιτισμός.
