As winter comes to an end, the weather is getting warmer and the sun is shining just a little brighter. It’s the perfect time for some routine spring home maintenance!
The key to success with this slightly daunting task is to create and follow a checklist. Luckily, we’ve put one together for you! So, follow along to ensure that your home is ready inside and out for the spring season!
◊ Examine your home’s foundation walls for cracks, leaks or signs of moisture, and repair as required.
◊ Consult your hot water tank’s operating manual on how to carefully test the temperature and check the pressure relief valve to ensure it is not stuck. Warning: Proceed with caution to avoid getting burned during testing as hot water may be released
◊ During the heating season, check and clean or replace furnace air filters every month. Ventilation system filters (such as a heat recovery ventilator) should be checked every two months.
◊ Shut down, drain and clean your furnace humidifier. Close the furnace humidifier damper on units with central air conditioning.
◊ Turn on power to your air conditioning to ensure it is operating properly. Have it serviced every two or three years. Clean or replace the air conditioner filter, if applicable.
◊ Check and drain your dehumidifier and clean it out if necessary.
◊ Fireplaces, wood stoves and chimneys should be inspected, cleaned and serviced if needed.
◊ If your home has a sump pump, ensure it is operating properly before the spring thaw starts. Verify the discharge pipe is connected tightly and allows water to drain away from your foundation.
◊ Check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and clean if necessary. Replace batteries for each.
◊ Open the valve to the outside hose connection once temperatures are consistently high enough that there is no danger of frost.
◊ Check eavestroughs and downspouts for loose joints and clear any obstructions and debris from the winter to ensure water flows away from your foundation.
◊ Clean all windows, screens and exterior hardware.
◊ Check for and seal off any holes in exterior cladding that could be an entry point for small pests such as bats and squirrels.
◊ Clear any drainage ditches and culverts of debris.
◊ Check patio stones, walkways, and stairs for any cracks or shifting due to frost upheaval. Repair as required.

As we come out of the icy grip of winter, thoroughly cleaning your entire house may seem like an overwhelming task – but nothing beats the feeling of a decluttered, deep-cleaned home.
Finding it hard to get started? Try opening windows to usher out stale air and welcome a refreshing breeze. Use aromatherapy to reenergize yourself during the cleaning process and put on a lively playlist, podcast, or TV show to keep your spirits up while you clean. Establishing a fun and reinvigorating tone for your spring-cleaning ritual will set you up for success.
Here is a comprehensive checklist for a thorough spring cleaning, as well as some natural cleaning methods.
■ Clean behind and under larger pieces of furniture like couches and tv consoles
■ Clean windowsills, blinds and windows – both inside and out
■ Clean out your refrigerator and freezer of any old food. Change out any air and water filters if necessary
■ Turn over your garage from winter ready to spring ready, putting away snowblowers and shovels, for lawnmowers and gardening tools

After a long, cold winter, spring is finally here, and with it comes the promise of warmer weather and outdoor entertaining. But before you invite guests over for a spring barbecue or garden party, it’s important to prepare your home for outdoor entertaining. Here are some tips to help you get started:
After a long winter, your outdoor space may need some TLC. Start by cleaning up any debris that may have accumulated, such as fallen leaves, branches, or dead plants. If you have outdoor furniture, give it a good cleaning to remove any dirt or grime.
With daylight hours getting longer, you’ll want to make sure your outdoor lighting is in good working order. Check your outdoor light fixtures and replace any burned-out bulbs. If you don’t have outdoor lighting, consider investing in some string lights or lanterns to create a cozy ambiance for your guests.
Spring is the perfect time to freshen up your landscaping. Consider planting some flowers, shrubs, or trees to add color and texture to your outdoor space. If you have a lawn, make sure to mow it regularly to keep it looking neat and tidy.
Outdoor decor can help to create a welcoming atmosphere for your guests. Consider adding some outdoor throw pillows, rugs, or even a decorative fountain or statue to make your outdoor space feel more inviting.
If you plan on hosting a spring barbecue, make sure your grill is in good working order. Check the gas tank and make sure there are no leaks. Give the grill grates a good cleaning to remove any leftover residue from last season.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your home creates a welcoming and comfortable space for your guests to enjoy the warmer weather and the beauty of the season.
Spring gardening is a wonderful way to connect with nature and bring beauty to your home. By planning your garden, you can ensure a successful and enjoyable gardening experience. So, grab your gardening gloves and tools and get ready to make your garden bloom this spring. Happy gardening!
Before you start digging and planting, take some time to plan your garden. Decide what kind of plants you want to grow and how much space you have. Take into consideration the amount of sunlight, water, and nutrients the plants need. Research the planting zones and the specific requirements of each plant. Make a list of the plants you want to grow and sketch a garden plan to visualize the layout.
Soil is the foundation of your garden, so before you plant anything, make sure your soil is ready. Start by removing any debris, rocks, and weeds from the garden bed. Loosen the soil with a rake or hoe and mix in some compost or organic matter to enrich the soil with nutrients. Test the pH level of the soil to ensure that it is within the optimal range for your selected plants.

In this new ongoing series, we take a look at different lifestyle philosophies from around the world. A lifestyle philosophy is a set of beliefs and principles that guide an individual’s approach to living. It includes one’s attitudes, values, and priorities that shape their behaviour and decisionmaking. A lifestyle philosophy often reflects personal sensibilities and aspirations, through everything from decor to habits.
Lagom is a Swedish philosophy that emphasizes the importance of moderation and balance in all areas of life, from work and leisure to food and home decor. The goal is to find a comfortable and sustainable middle ground that leads to contentment and wellbeing.
As a household chore, doing laundry may not be the most exciting task. However, with the right design and decor, a laundry room can be transformed into a sexy and stylish space that elevates the overall ambiance of your home.
Gone are the days when laundry rooms were simply a place to wash and dry clothes. Today, homeowners are increasingly investing in the aesthetics of their laundry rooms, making them both functional and visually pleasing. The trend of designing attractive laundry rooms has taken off, with various styles and designs available to suit any taste.
One approach to improve your laundry room is by incorporating bold colors and patterns. Bright colors, such as neon pink or lime green, can add a playful and energetic vibe to the space. Alternatively, muted earthy
tones, such as olive green or deep navy, can create a sense of calmness and serenity.
Another way to elevate your laundry room is by adding luxurious finishes and materials. Marble or granite countertops and backsplashes can create a sophisticated and elegant feel, while brass or gold fixtures can add a touch of glamour. Installing statement lighting, such as a chandelier or pendant light, can also create a dramatic effect in the space.
Storage and organization are also essential components of a modern laundry room. Built-in cabinets and shelves not only provide ample storage space for detergents and other laundry supplies, but they can also create a sleek and streamlined look. Adding baskets or decorative bins can also help to keep the space organized while adding a touch of charm.
Finally, incorporating unique design elements can make your laundry room stand out. Wallpaper, murals, or tile accents can add a touch of personality and style to the space. Artwork, such as framed prints or canvases, can also add visual interest and enhance the overall ambiance.
So, if you’d like to elevate your laundry room from just a wash and dry space that you’d rather just get out of as soon as possible, consider implementing some of these suggestions – in no time, your laundry room and this mundane chore will get just a touch sexier.
We’ve seen a shift towards more earthy, natural tones and textures. This trend is set to continue, with 2023 bringing with it a range of new color trends that reflect our desire for connection with nature and a sense of calm.
One of these standout colors is sage green. This earthy tone is reminiscent of the natural world and is the perfect color to use in any room of the house. It pairs well with warm woods, natural stone, and metal accents, making it versatile enough to use in any style of decor.
When it comes to woods, there’s a growing trend towards using lighter, more natural woods like oak and ash. These woods have a soft, natural look that’s perfect for creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere in any space. They work well with a range of colours, from pastels to bright hues, and can be used to create a variety of styles, from rustic to modern.
Terracotta is perfect for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere in any room. This rich, reddish-brown hue works well with other natural materials like wood and stone, creating a harmonious and grounded feel. Depending on the décor piece, terracotta can also be used as a textured material reminiscent of clay.
Finally, we can’t forget about classic black. While this may not be anything new, the focus here is on a rich, earthy black that looks and feels more natural. It works well in any space, from a modern apartment to a traditional home, and can be used in a variety of ways to create a deep, striking, rich look and feel.
Wallpaper can be a great way to add personality and style to your home. Whether you’re looking to create a bold statement or a more subtle look, there are a few things to consider when choosing wallpaper. Here are 3 tips to help you choose the perfect wallpaper for your home.
The first thing to consider when choosing wallpaper is the room’s function. Different rooms in your home have different purposes, and your wallpaper choice should reflect that. For example, in a bedroom, you may want to choose a calming wallpaper design to create a relaxing atmosphere. In a kitchen, you might want a wallpaper that is easy to clean and maintain.
The pattern and color of your wallpaper can make a big impact on the overall look and feel of your home. When choosing a pattern, consider the size of the room and the furniture you have in it. For example, in a small room, a busy pattern can make the space feel cluttered. In a larger room, you can be more adventurous with the pattern.
When it comes to color, think about the mood you want to create in the room. Warm colors like red and orange can create a cozy, inviting atmosphere, while cool colors like blue and green can be calming and soothing.
Once you’ve chosen a wallpaper design, it’s important to test it out before committing to it. Many wallpaper companies offer samples that you can order to see how the wallpaper will look in your home. You can also use online tools that allow you to upload a photo of your room and visualize how the wallpaper will look on the walls.
Testing the wallpaper can also give you an idea of the quality and durability of the paper. Some wallpapers are easier to install than others, and some may require professional installation. Testing the wallpaper can help you avoid any surprises or disappointments down the line.
Choosing wallpaper for your home requires careful consideration of the room’s function, pattern and color, and testing the wallpaper before committing to it. By following these tips, you can find the perfect wallpaper to create the look and feel you want in your home!
Amirror is arguably the most underrated décor piece – often settled for and often pre-installed in a home and rarely, if ever, changed. It is inherently functional, but it is also an essential design element in any home. The right mirror can create the illusion of more space, add interest to a wall or room, work as an art piece, project light, and of course, provide the functional purpose of showing your reflection.
From oversized mirrors, to light-up LED styles, to functional workout mirrors (yes, you heard that right), the world of mirrors is offering some new reflections. Here’s the latest on the coolest mirror trends of the moment.

Did you know that our Elm & CO. community in Stouffville is named after a rare local 200-year-old elm tree?
Standing strong at 40 meters tall, with a canopy 40 meters wide and a 4-metre trunk circumference, this two-century old tree is one of the oldest trees in Stouffville. Many elm trees in the area have been wiped out by the Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s and 1980s — the fact that this tree survived is nothing short of a miracle.
across the continent between 1920s, and by the 1970s, it had killed millions of elm trees. At its peak, the disease was killing tens of thousands of trees every year. The loss of these majestic trees was a significant blow to many communities, as the elms were often the centrepieces of parks and public spaces.
The Dutch Elm Disease was a fungus that was brought to North America from Europe, which devastated elm trees
Despite the devastation caused by the Dutch Elm Disease, a few elms managed to survive. One such tree
is this 200-year-old elm in Stouffville. This tree is not only a survivor, but it is also a testament to the resilience of nature. It has endured harsh weather conditions, disease, and even the threat of development. With the new GO Transit Station underway in Stouffville, many thought that this tree would have to be cut down. However, Stouffville residents were not going to let that happen! The Eco Club at St. Brigid Catholic Elementary School collected 400 signatures to save the tree, and other locals made earnest efforts to ensure the tree was preserved.
The 200 year old elm tree in Stouffville is a treasured part of the community and its history. Thanks to the efforts of residents and the consideration of Metrolinx, the ancient elm tree in Stouffville is being preserved and
allowed to remain in the same spot it has called home for the last two centuries. Metrolinx even went a step further, renaiming their Lincolnville GO Station the Old Elm Station.
In honour of this legendary tree, we have named our new community in Stouffville as Elm & CO. This name not only pays tribute to the elm tree but also reflects the values of this future community. Like the elm tree, Elm & CO. is green, environmentally conscious, strong, and well-built. The name “Elm & CO.” is more than just a catchy title. It is a reminder of the importance of nature and the role that trees play in our communities. We hope this ancient elm tree continues to stand tall and strong, inspiring generations to come!

Trace your hand onto a piece of paper, cut it out and then glue it onto a piece of construction paper. Decorate the handprint with paint, markers or glitter to make it look like a flower.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
◊ Construction paper (in various colors)
◊ Pencil
◊ Scissors
◊ Glue
◊ Paint, markers or glitter for decorating
1. Start by choosing the color of construction paper you want to use as the background for your flower.
2. Trace your hand onto a different color of construction paper. You can use any color you like - green for the stem, or any color for the petals.
3. Cut out the handprint shape.
4. Glue the handprint onto the background construction paper, positioning it so that it looks like a flower.
5. Next, use the paint, markers, or glitter to decorate the handprint to make it look like a flower. You can add details to the fingers to make them look like petals, or use the paint to make the handprint look like the center of the flower.
6. Once the paint is dry, you can write a special message on the construction paper around the flower, or add any other decorative touches you like.
That’s it! The Handprint Flowers craft is a simple and fun way to create a personalized gift on Mother’s Day.
Decorate a plain picture frame with paint, glitter or stickers. Then, add a special photo!
MATERIALS NEEDED:
◊ A plain wooden photo frame
◊ Acrylic paint or wood stain
◊ Paintbrush
◊ Disposable gloves
◊ Paper towels or a rag
◊ Clear acrylic sealer spray (optional)
◊ A photo to display in the frame
1. Start by removing any hardware or backing from the frame.
2. Put on a pair of disposable gloves to protect your hands from the dye or stain.
3. Apply the acrylic paint or wood stain to the frame with a paintbrush, making sure to cover the entire surface of the frame. If using acrylic paint, you can mix different colors to create a unique look.
4. Once you’ve covered the entire frame with paint or stain, use a paper towel or rag to gently wipe away any excess, leaving just a thin layer of color. You can also use the paper towel or rag to create a textured effect by dabbing it on the frame.
5. Allow the frame to dry completely before handling it.
6. If desired, you can spray the frame with a clear acrylic sealer spray to protect the finish.
7. Once the frame is dry and sealed, insert your favorite photo and display it in your home to enjoy!
TIPS:
If you’re using a wooden frame, you may want to sand it lightly before applying the dye or stain to ensure that the surface is smooth and even.
You can also experiment with different types of dye or stain to achieve a specific color or effect. Just be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and wear gloves to protect your hands.
If you want to add a personal touch, you can also use a paint pen or marker to write a special message or add designs to the frame.
Use beads, string, or wire to make a necklace or bracelet for your mom. Personalize it with her favorite colors or beads.
MATERIALS NEEDED:
◊ Stretch cord or elastic cord
◊ Beads (in a variety of colors and sizes)
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Cut a length of stretch cord or elastic cord to the desired length for your jewelry piece. You can use scissors to cut the cord to the correct length.
2. Tie a knot at one end of the cord to prevent the beads from sliding off.
3. Slide the beads onto the cord, arranging them in any pattern you like. You can use a variety of colors and sizes to create a unique look.
4. Once you’ve added all of the beads you want, tie a knot at the other end of the cord to secure the beads in place.
5. Trim the excess cord from each end of the jewelry piece.
TIPS:
You can experiment with different types of beads to create different effects. For example, you could use beads with different shapes, sizes, and colors to create a more complex design.
If you’re making a necklace, you may want to add a focal bead or pendant to the center of the necklace to create a more dramatic effect.
Be sure to use a knot that is secure enough to hold the beads in place without coming undone.
This method is simple and easy to follow, and it doesn’t require any special tools or skills. It’s a great option for kids or beginners who want to make homemade jewelry for Mother’s Day.

In the spirit of the holiday season this past December, StateView Homes proudly held our first annual Sick Kids Toy Drive, a heartwarming charity event aimed at bringing joy to children courageously fighting illnesses. The Toy Drive, fueled by generous donations from staff, trades, and suppliers, gathered hundreds of toys, crafts, games, and other cherished gifts tailored to the holiday wishes of the children.
With enthusiasm, all StateView’s employees carefully selected and purchased presents, meticulously adhering to each child’s unique wish list, ensuring that every young recipient would have something magical to unwrap on Christmas Day. It truly was a team effort. Over
a few festive weeks, the company’s Christmas tree in the lobby became a centrepiece featuring a collection of thoughtful gifts, from Barbie dolls to toy trucks to LEGO sets, instilling an atmosphere of joy and eager anticipation for this good cause.
Once all the gifts were collected, they were delivered to the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto, where they were received with joy by the staff, families, and children alike. The sheer happiness these gifts brought for the young patients is truly immeasurable, and the entire StateView Homes team is thrilled to have contributed to such a meaningful cause. We eagerly anticipate bringing even more cheer and goodwill this year!
